Abstract:We report on a plasmonics-based electrochemical current imaging of redox reactions in aqueous droplets with diameters varying from a few hundred nanometers (tens of attoliter in volume) to a few micrometers. The imaging technique allows us to obtain cyclic voltammograms of multiple droplets on a gold electrode simultaneously and to examine the local redox reactions within a droplet. The results are supported by numerical simulations. The work demonstrates a new capability of studying electrochemistry in microdroplets, which offers an opportunity to understand electrochemical reactions within a small confined volume.

Abstract:Probing electrochemical reactions at the single-reaction level is the ultimate goal for electroanalytical chemistry. The development of electrical approaches and optical methods has enabled addressing the electrochemistry of individual molecules in various systems such as scanning probe microscopy, fixed nanogaps, nanopores, single-molecule fluorescence microscopy, and single-molecule electrochemiluminescence microscopy, which can bring new views on fundamental electrochemistry, electroanalytical applications, and electrochemical cells. We conclude with potential directions for further improving the spatial and temporal resolution and developing new techniques towards meeting the requirements for achieving the outlined goals.

Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance microscopy (SPRM) is an emerging label-free optical microscopic imaging technology. It utilizes the planar surface plasmon resonance effect to visualize the optical mass of individual nano-objects. On the basis of appropriate optical-to-electrochemical conversion models, electrochemical current associated with individual nanoparticles can be quantitatively resolved from SPRM images recorded during electrochemical reactions, allowing for cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry analysis at single nanoparticle level. More importantly, the spatial resolution of SPRM further enables us to investigate the structure-activity relationship in a bottom-up manner by correlating the structure (from electron microscopes) and the electrochemical activity (from SPRM) of the very same individuals. In this mini-review, we summarize our recent work on using SPRM to study the electrochemical activities of single nanoparticles, and provide our opinions on the challenges and future research directions in this field.

Abstract:AbstractNoble metal nanoparticles with plasmon resonance features have been widely applied in electrocatalysis and photo‐electrochemistry owing to their unique physical, optical, and catalytic properties. As heterogeneity of nanostructures has considerable influence on their catalytic activities, investigation of electrochemical process on a single nano‐catalyst is necessary to eliminate bulk effect and averaged results. Dark‐field microscopy (DFM) enables the measurements of plasmon resonance scattering spectroscopy of a single nanoparticle. Integrating with electrochemistry, DFM provides a powerful tool to real‐time monitor electrochemical reactions at the nanoscale surface to get new insight into the reaction mechanism. Herein, this mini‐review presented impressive applications of DFM in single‐nanoparticle electrochemistry and discussed recent progress on its performance with enhanced sensitivity and resolution.

Abstract:Real time observation of chemical reactions of individual noble metal nanoparticles (MNPs) is fundamentally important to their controlled synthesis, chemical sensing and catalysis applications. Here, with a simple and high-throughput single-molecule darkfield spectral imaging technique, we demonstrate that the reaction-induced plasmonic resonance variations of multiple MNPs could be monitored in parallel. Oxidation kinetics of individual gold nanorods (AuNRs), either immobilized on a glass substrate or moving freely in homogeneous solution, was recorded successfully. Heterogeneous reaction pathways and intermediate states unobservable in ensemble UV-visible measurements were revealed. Interestingly, the oxidation rate of individual immobilized AuNRs was much slower than that of the bulk AuNR solution, which implies the existence of a novel self-catalysis mechanism. This high-throughput darkfield spectral imaging technique could be applied to chemical reaction kinetics and heterogeneous catalysis studies of other MNPs at single particle level.

Abstract:Changes in the optical properties of single gold nanorods during electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose in alkaline media are monitored in real-time by single-nanoparticle dark-field spectroelectrochemistry. The spectral scattering characteristics under dynamic potential scan conditions are closely related to the electrochemical processes, and the electrochemical catalytic mechanism of the process is discussed. Moreover, changes in free-electron density are evaluated using a Drude dielectric function with charge density-modification. The proposed sensing technique based on plasmonic analysis shows significant promise for the design and research of electrochemical catalytic systems at the single-nanoparticle level.

Abstract:Nanomaterials exhibit structural and functional heterogeneity among individual nanoparticles, thus requiring a capability to study single nanoparticles. While electron microscopes often provide static images of their chemical composition, morphology and structure, imaging the chemical activity of single nanoparticles is highly desirable for exploring the structure-activity relationship via a bottom-up strategy, to understand their microscopic reaction mechanisms and kinetics, and to identify a minority subpopulation with extraordinary activity. Recently, various optical microscopes have been emerging as powerful techniques towards this goal, owing to their non-invasive nature, excellent sensitivity, diversified spectroscopic principles and sufficient spatial and temporal resolution. In this review, we first introduce the motivational concept and the strength of using optical microscopy to study the chemical activity of single nanoparticles. In the second section, five types of commonly used optical microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, dark-field microscopy, surface plasmon resonance microscopy, Raman microscopy and photothermal microscopy are described, with an emphasis on their applicable nanomaterials and mechanisms for application. Recent achievements of these techniques in nanosensing, nanoelectrochemistry and nanocatalysis are surveyed and summarized in the subsequent sections, respectively. We finally conclude with our perspective on the remaining challenges and the future trends in this field.

Abstract:Single nanoparticle (NP) electrochemical measurements are widely described, both theoretically and experimentally, as they enable visualization of the electrochemical signal of a single NP that is masked in ensemble measurements. However, investigating the behavior of individual NPs using electrochemical signals remains a significant challenge. Here we report experiments and simulations demonstrating that multiple distinct motion trajectories could be discerned from time-resolved current traces by dynamic Monte Carlo simulations. We show that continuous monitoring and quantification of electrochemical oxidation of individual AgNPs using a low-noise electrochemical measurement platform produce significantly distinguished current traces due to the size-dependent motions of AgNPs. Our findings offer a view of the electrochemical signals of individual NPs that are largely different from that in the literature, and underscore the significance of motion behaviors in single NP electrochemistry.

Abstract:Y Real-time probing of the compositional evolution of single nanoparticles during an electrochemical reaction is crucial for understanding the structure-performance relationship and rationally designing nanomaterials for desirable applications; however, it is consistently challenging to achieve high-throughput real-time tracking. Here, we present an optical imaging method, termed plasmonic scattering interferometry microscopy (PSIM), which is capable of imaging the compositional evolution of single nanoparticles during an aqueous electrochemical reaction in real time. By quantifying the plasmonic scattering interferometric pattern of nanoparticles, we establish the relationship between the pattern and composition of single nanoparticles. Using PSIM, we have successfully probed the compositional transformation dynamics of multiple individual nanoparticles during electrochemical reactions. PSIM could be used as a universal platform for exploring the compositional evolution of nanomaterials at the single-nanoparticle level and offers great potentials for addressing the extensive fundamental questions in nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Abstract:Measuring electrochemical activities of nanomaterials is critical for creating novel catalysts, for developing ultrasensitive sensors, and for understanding fundamental nanoelectrochemistry. However, traditional electrochemical methods measure a large number of nanoparticles, which wash out the properties of individual nanoparticles. We report here a study of transient electrochemical oxidation of single Ag nanoparticles during collision with an electrode and voltammetry of single nanoparticles immobilized on the electrode using a plasmonic-based electrochemical current microscopy. This technique images both electrochemical reaction and size of the same individual nanoparticle, enabling quantitative examination of size-dependent electrochemical activities at single nanoparticle level. The imaging capability further allows detection of the reaction kinetics of each individual nanoparticle and analysis of the average behaviors of multiple nanoparticles. The average kinetics and size dependence can be accurately described by the Tafel equation, but there is a large variability between different nanoparticles, which underscores the importance of single nanoparticle analysis.

Abstract:Real-time dynamic imaging of the electrochemical reactions on individual nanoparticles is important for the design of novel and highly efficient electrocatalytic systems. Single-molecule fluorescent microscopy (SMFM) has been proven to be a powerful tool for in situ imaging electrochemical reactions at the single-particle level. In this article, we summarize the applications of SMFM in the field of electrochemistry, including imaging of electrochemical redox reactions, electrocatalysis, and photoelectrocatalysis. Finally, we present some new perspectives and challenges in the field, encouraging more researchers to apply this single-molecule technology more widely in energy-related processes.

Abstract:AbstractClarifying the hidden but intrinsic feature of single nanoparticles by nanoelectrochemistry could help understand its potential for diverse applications. The uncontrolled interface and bandwidth limitation in the electrochemical measurement put the obstacle in single particle collision. Here, we demonstrate a well‐defined 30 nm nanopore electrode with a rapid chemical‐electrochemical fabrication method which provides a high reproducibility in both size and performance. A capacitance‐based detection mechanism is demonstrated to achieve a high current resolution of 0.6 pA ±0.1 pA (RMS) and a high the temporal resolution of 0.01 ms. By utilizing this electrode, the dynamic interactions of every single particle in the mixture could be directly read during the collision process. The collision frequency is two orders of magnitude higher than previous reports, which helps reveal the hidden features of nanoparticles during the complex and multidimensional interaction processes.

Abstract:Imaging electrochemical processes has attracted increasing attention in past decades. Particularly, monitoring electrochemical reactions rapidly at the nano-scale is still a challenge due to the ultra-low current detection and long scanning time required. The development of optical techniques provide a new way to demonstrate electrochemical processes through optical signals which enhance sensitivity and spatial resolution. Herein, we developed a novel method to image electrocatalytic processes on single gold nanorods (GNRs) during Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) scanning based on plasmon resonance scattering information by using dark-field microscopy. The electrocatalytic oxidation of hydrogen peroxide was selected as a typical reaction and the catalytic mechanism was revealed using the obtained spectra. Notably, observation on single GNRs avoided the averaging effects in bulk systems and confirmed that the individual nanoparticles had variable catalytic properties with different spectral change during the reaction process. Furthermore, a color-amplified system was introduced to convert light intensity into imaging information via the Matlab program which was able to image thousands of nanoparticles simultaneously. This approach offered the statistical intensity distribution of all of the nanoparticles in a dark-field image which dramatically enhanced the detection accuracy and avoided random events.

Abstract:With the development of nano-fabrications in recent years,a novel strategy based on random collisions of single electroactive nanoparticles (NPs) onto an inert ultramicroelectrode (UME) has been emerged in the field of nanoelectrochemistry,and named as single nanoparticles collisions (SNCs).The technique uses a chronoamperometric method to detect transient current generated by random collisions of single NPs onto an UME.By analyzing the current signal,one could study the properties of single NPs.Although this technique can detect electrochemical or electrocatalytic currents of a single NP,the traditional SNCs technology lacks necessary spatial resolution to identify and characterize a specific NP.Therefore,several optical imaging techniques have been combined with SNCs strategy to provide spatial information together with electrochemical currents.In this review,we summarize three detection principles of SNCs and provide a brief overview in the combination of SNCs with several optical imaging techniques.We finally conclude with the future trends in developments of SNCs.

Abstract:We propose monochromatic dark-field imaging microscopy (DFM) to measure the non-faradaic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of single Au nanorods (AuNRs). DFM was utilized to monitor the plasmonic scattering of monochromatic incident light by surface-immobilized individual AuNRs. When modulating the surface potential at a certain frequency, non-faradaic charging and discharging of AuNRs altered their electron density, leading to periodical fluctuations in the scattering intensity. Analysis of the amplitude and phase of the optical intensity fluctuation as a function of modulation frequency resulted in the EIS of single AuNRs. High-frequency (>100 Hz) modulation allowed us to differentiate the intrinsic charging effect from other contributions such as the periodic migration and accumulation of counterions in the surrounding medium, because the latter occurred at a longer timescale. As a result, single nanoparticle EIS led to the surface capacitance of single AuNRs being closer to the theoretical value. Since interfacial capacitance has been proven sensitive to molecular interactions, the present work also offers a new platform for single nanoparticle sensing by measuring the single nanoparticle capacitance.
