Abstract:This research reports the findings of large low-field magnetocaloric effect in polycrystalline Pr1-xPbxMnO3 (0.1 <= x <= 0.5) perovskites. It is found that, upon an applied field of 13.5 kOe, the magnetic entropy change (Delta S-M) reached values of 3.91, 3.68, and 3.34 J/kg K for x=0.1, 0.4, and 0.5 compositions, respectively. These values are larger than that of Gd (3.32 J/kg K) and were attained by a low applied magnetic field that can be generated by permanent magnets. These superior magnetocaloric features together with a relatively low material cost make the Pr1-xPbxMnO3 perovskites attractive candidate materials for magnetic refrigerators in a temperature range of 150-270 K. Abstract:The structure, magnetization and electrical resistance for the La2−xSrxMnRuO6 system with double-perovskite structure were investigated. The structural transition from an orthorhombic cell with a random arrangement of Mn and Ru to a cubic cell (rock salt sublattice) with an ordered arrangement occurs at near x=1.0. All samples La2−xSrxMnRuO6 (0≤x≤2.0) show semiconducting behavior. The conductivity for the samples with x≤0.3 at higher temperature has a 2-dimensional variable-range-hopping (VRH) mechanism. But the temperature dependence of resistance for La2−xSrxMnRuO6 (1.0≤x≤2.0) samples can be described using neither a VRH mechanism nor a thermal activation mechanism in a single energy gap. The samples with x<1.0 show ferromagnetism at lower temperatures. The La2−xSrxMnRuO6 (1.0≤x≤2.0) samples show ferrimagnetism below 300 K. The molecular field constant radio NAB/NAA changes with the doping concentration of Sr for La.

Abstract:We have measured resistivity, magnetization and magnetoresistance in polycrystalline La0.7−xPrxSr0.3MnO3 with fixed carrier concentration. With decreasing the average ionic radius of the La site 〈rA〉, we found a decrease in Tc, an increase in resistivity at Tc, and an increase in the magnitude of the magnetoresistance. The samples show a metal-insulator transition in the high-temperature paramagnetic phase with the variation of 〈rA〉. These results demonstrate the close relationship between 〈rA〉 and the band structure.

Abstract:We present the electrical properties of polycrystalline La0.7-xPrxSr0.3MnO3 in which the average ionic radius of the A site ��rA�� is systematically varied while keeping the carrier concentration fixed. Below the Curie temperature Tc, the spin-disorder scattering process has been regarded to play an important role in the resistivity. With decreasing ��rA��, the structure transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic phase accompanied with the sharp increase in resistivity at Tc and the increase of the activation energies has been observed. ? 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:We present a manganite-titanate junction composed of a 5 nm La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 film and a 1 wt% Nb-doped SrTiO3 substrate, which exhibits a considerable magnetic field effect. The magnetoresistance (MR = (R-H-R-0)/R-0) of the junction is weak in the forward direction but large in the reverse direction. At 300 K, a 5 T magnetic field can lead to a MR larger than-15%. Under a 5 T field, the MR at -1V is no less than -10% in a wide temperature range from 10 to 310 K. As a comparison, the MR in the junction based on the 150 nm La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 film is weak and the MR in the junction based on the 2 nm La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 film is large only at relatively low temperatures. These results provide a unique possibility of fabricating junctions with large room-temperature MR by tuning the thickness of the manganite film.

Abstract:The magnetic transport properties in granular perovskite system La1-xSrxMnO3 have been investigated. The spin-dependent interfacial tunneling and the corresponding giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect have been observed in the whole temperature range below the Curie point TC for the samples with concentration x from 0.05 to 0.45. Theoretical analysis shows that the interfacial tunneling originates from the difference in magnetism between surfaces and cores, and the tunnel-type GMR stems from the field-induced change of interfacial magnetic order.

Abstract:Structure, magnetization, and specific heat have been investigated for the Mo-doping La0.67Sr0.33Mn1−xMoxO3 (x=0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.06) perovskite system. The ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature Tc is found to decrease from 369K for x=0 to 361K for x=0.06 with increasing Mo doping. According to a second-order phase transition model, the critical behavior near Tc are investigated systematically based on the specific heat data, and the critical exponents are determined to be α=0.04–0.06, β=0.35–0.41, γ=1.13–1.25. The values of the critical exponents are found to keep almost same magnitude for La0.67Sr0.33Mn1−xMoxO3 system. It is noticed that the value of the critical exponent β locates between the mean-field value (β=0.5) and the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model value (β=0.325), which suggests the coexistence of the short-range and long-range ferromagnetic orders around the critical temperature. The fundamental factors to dominate the magnitude of the critical exponent values for the perovskite-type manganese oxide systems have been discussed as well.

Abstract:We have investigated the electronic structure of colossal magnetoresistive perovskite manganites La0.7−xPrxCa0.3MnO3 using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy as a function of temperature and Pr concentration x (x=0.13, 0.3, and 0.4). Unusual temperature-dependent and x-dependent spectral changes are observed in the entire valence band region. Since Pr doping does not introduce carriers into the system but brings about strong lattice distortion effects which exert significant influence on the p–d hybridization, the degree of mixing between Mn 3d and O2p levels is considered to be the major factor responsible for the spectral weight transfers with temperature and Pr doping level. The observed changes are not consistent with the results of local-density-approximation (LDA) band calculation, but can be understood by the density-of-states from the LDA+U calculation or configuration-interaction cluster calculations. This implies that a strong correlation effect between d electrons plays an important role in these manganites. High resolution spectra near the Fermi level shows a clear metallic edge at low temperature for low Pr concentration sample (x=0.13), but the metallic Fermi edge disappears at higher Pr doping levels (x=0.3 and 0.4) even at the temperature below Tc where the bulk metal–insulator transition occurs. This may be due to the low effective carrier density resulting from the reduced ferromagnetic ordering and the lattice distortion, or the pseudo-gap phenomena and the surface effect.

Abstract:A systematic investigation of the effect of Strontium (Sr) doping on the structure, magnetic behavior, and magnetocaloric properties of the manganite perovskites \({\text{La}}_{{0.67}} {\text{Ca}}_{{0.33 - x}} {\text{Sr}}_{x} {\text{Mn}}_{{0.98}} {\text{Ni}}_{{0.02}} {\text{O}}_{3}\) (LCSMNO) has been performed. The Sr content x takes three values, namely 0.15, 0.2, and 0.3. The sol–gel technique has been employed in the preparation of our compounds. The structural analysis has revealed that our samples exhibit a rhombohedral structure with \(R\bar{3}c\) space group symmetry, close to ambient temperature. A second-order paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) transition has been validated over the Curie temperature range TC between 319 K (x = 0.15) to 353 K (x = 0.3), based on Arrott's analysis with the behavior of the master curve. According to the calculations made, the maximal values of the magnetic entropy change \({(-\Delta S}_{M}^{max})\) resulting through Landau's theory and the ones obtained by the classic Maxwell relationship are very close. We find the value of \({(-\Delta S}_{M}^{max})\) is equal to 4.386, 4.469, and 4.250 J Kg−1 K−1, respectively, for x = 0.15, 0.2, and 0.3, when an external magnetic field μ0H = 5 T is applied. Based on the results of the study in this work, we find that controlled Sr doping adapts perfectly to the magnetic as well as the magnetocaloric properties of the LCMNO, which plays an important role in the implementation of many potential applications of the material in the field of near-ambient temperature magnetic refrigeration technology.

Associated with this growth are a series of magnetic changes, including magnetization, Curie temperature T c and superparamagnetic behavior. These phenomena may provide another route to understanding the relationship between structure and magnetism in the hole-doped manganese perovskites.

Abstract:Zr-substituted perovskites La0.7Sr0.3Mn1-xZrxO3 with 0 <= x <= 0.20 were investigated by neutron diffraction (ND), magnetization, electric resistivity, and magnetoresistance measurements. ND refinements reveal that substituted Zr4+ goes only to the Mn site. Because of its large size, this leads to a Zr-solubility limit at x <= 0.10. The x <= 0.10 samples exhibit a rhombohedral structure (space group R(3)over-bar-c) from 10 K to room temperature. For the x <= 0.10 samples, the cell parameters a and c, and volume increase continuously with increasing Zr content. In addition, the structural distortion of the MnO6 octahedra increases with increasing Zr content. Zr-substituted La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 exhibits metallic behavior at low temperature. The field dependent resistivity suggests that electron-electron scattering is dominant and a two-magnon scattering process emerges with increasing temperature. The contribution from the two-magnon scattering in resistivity becomes larger with increasing Zr content. A maximum magnetoresistance (MRmax) of 35% is obtained for the x=0.03 sample at H=5 T. The MRmax shifts to a higher temperature region upon application of an external magnetic field. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The uncommon Sc ions are employed to partially replace Mn in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 perovskite. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate a pure single phase with rhombohedral lattice symmetry for La0.7Sr0.3Mn1−xScxO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.1). The Curie temperature (TC) is tuned to near room temperature by Sc substitution with x = 0.03–0.05, and consequently a significant enhancement in magnetoresistance (MR) at room temperature is obtained in the Sc-doped compounds. Magnetic measurement shows no spin coupling between Sc and Mn ions. We suggest that the reduction in TC and the enhancement in MR are ascribable to the suppression of ferromagnetic order due to the structural distortion caused by the large Sc3+ ions.

Abstract:Polycrystalline La0.825Sr0.175MnO3 was prepared by solid state reaction method. It exhibits a ferromagnetic–paramagnetic phase transition at TC∼286 K. The intrinsic magnetic properties were clarified by the scaling theory and the isothermal magnetization measured around TC. Based on the modified Arrott plot, Kouvel–Fisher method and Widom relation, the critical exponents are determined to be β=0.308(7), γ=1.065(8), δ=4.457(17). Normalization of the critical exponents shows that the extended exchange interaction decays with J∼r−4.861, consistent with Tricritical mean field model. Rhodes–Wohlfarth ratio PC/MS>1 suggests that La0.825Sr0.175MnO3 is completely itinerant ferromagnet.

Abstract:In the present investigation, we present the comparison of the structural, magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetoresistance behavior of solid state and sol–gel derived La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 . X-ray diffraction together with Rietveld refinement confirms the rhombohedral structure of the synthesised samples with the R c space group. The ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition temperature decreases from 360 K to 346 K for the nanocrystalline sample. The XPS measurements confirm the presence of Mn 3+ in the synthesised samples. Furthermore, the polycrystalline sample exhibits a considerable −Δ S M of 4.68 J kg −1 K −1 at 360 K for a field change of 50 kOe and a relative cooling power (RCP) of 205 J kg −1 . A −Δ S M of 1.14 J kg −1 K −1 was obtained for the nanocrystalline sample at 346 K with an RCP of 83 J kg −1 . Critical exponent analysis has also been performed on both samples to establish the universality class. Both samples exhibit a distinct metal-to-insulator transition, which increases with grain size from 187 K to 334 K as a result of grain growth and decreased grain boundary. As the grain size increases, the resistivity decreases and shifts towards high temperatures with increasing magnetic fields. The itinerant electron model (IEO) which is based on the hopping of O 2p itinerant electrons has been used to explain the resistivity behaviour of the samples. It is found that the negative magnetoresistance also increases with a decrease in grain size where the highest %MR of 26% can be observed for the nanocrystalline sample. These results make La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 a suitable candidate for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:Nanoscale layered-perovskite La2.5-xK0.5+xMn2O7 (0 < x < 0.5) have been prepared by the modified sol-gel method, and their structural, magnetic and electric properties have been studied. The experimental results show that these materials exhibit paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transitions at 183, 216, 230, 238 and 249K for x = 0.05, 0.15, 0.25, 0.35 and 0.45, respectively. For all compositions of La2.5-xK0.5+xMn2O7 investigated here, we have observed no metal-nonmetal transition phenomena for the whole temperature region (80 - 300 K). The nanoscale samples exhibit highly enhanced magnetoresistance (MR) effects especially at low temperatures (< T-C). The MR behaviour can be explained by taking into account the two-dimensionality with anisotropy of the Mn-O networks and nanoscale grain size effect in the layered manganese perovskites.

Abstract:Magnetic entropy change (ΔSM), magnetoresistance (MR) and resistivity (ρ) have been studied in a series of bulk polycrystalline manganites (La1−xGdx)0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (x=0.1–0.7) with fixed carrier concentration. These effects, as well as the Curie temperature Tc, are all influenced much by the average ionic radius of the La site <rA>, which decreases monotonously with the increase of the Gd content. As the doping level x increases, a structural phase transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic is also observed in these samples. For the x=0.6 sample, the maximum |ΔSM| at Tc in a field change of 10Oe is 3.2J/kgK, and for the x=0.7 sample, the maximum MR in a magnetic field of 40kOe is 27,700%.
