Abstract:s:The basis of traditional Chinese theory of rule of virtue is the self-cultivation of the ruler, but emphasis is also placed on education at the societal level. The proper approach to self-cultivation and social education is meditation, which both Confucianism and Taoism advocate though their aims differ, in that Taoism aims to enter the realm of naturalness whereas Confucianism aims to rid people of selfishness and cultivate a stronger sense of social responsibility. Influenced by the pre-Qin Confucian and Taoist ideas of rule of virtue, Taoism, since the Han Dynasty, has paid close attention to social education, regarding ethical cultivation as a prerequisite for conversion into Taoism. While the concept of moral meditation in the literature of Taoism is tinged with mystery, it has undeniable value as it has a strong orientation toward justice and behavior.
