Abstract:Pectin was extracted from pumpkin residue by method of acid-solution. The experimental results show that the ratio between pumpkin and water is 1∶35 (g/mL), the pH value is 1.5, the operating time is 1.5 h, the materials granularity is 0.2 mm, the esterification degree of pumpkin pectin is 55.73 % , belonging to high esterification degree pectin.

Abstract:Three different extraction methods were used to extract high-temperature water-extracted pectin (HWp), high-temperature acid-extracted pectin (HAp), and high-temperature alkali-extracted pectin (HALp) from Lycium ruthenicum. The physicochemical properties, structure, and functional properties of three different pectins were studied. The results showed that HWp and HALp can extract rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) from L. ruthenicum better. Through structural feature analysis, HWp and HALp have a branched structure, and HWp has a higher degree of esterification than HAp and HALp. Zeta potential results show that HWp solution is more stable. The thermal analysis results show that the thermal stability is HALp > HAp > HWp. HWp has the highest viscosity. The inhibitory activity results showed that HWp, HAp, and HALp have a certain inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase activity. This study shows the effects of different extraction methods on the properties of L. ruthenicum pectin and aims to provide a theoretical basis for the pharmaceutical and food industries to choose more suitable pectin extraction methods.

Abstract:Pectin is a complex hetero polysaccharide mainly found in the primary cell wall of dicotyledonous plants and it is extensively employed as a gelling agent, thickener, stabilizer and emulsifier in food industry. This study was designed to extract and characterize pectin from waste of Cucurbita maxima. Pectin was extracted separately from core, peel and whole fruit of Cucurbita maxima by the method of acid hydrolysis. Subsequently, extracted pectin was isolated from acid solution through ethanol precipitation. Extracted pectin was dried at 40 ± 1°C overnight. Physiochemical properties and solubility of dried pectin were evaluated using different tests. The highest yield was reported for the fresh pumpkin peel extracted using 0.1 N hydrochloric acid at 80 ± 5°C, 1.25 pH for 1 hour. In addition moisture content, ash content, crude fibre content, crude fat content, crude protein content and degree of esterification of extracted pectin were 4.53% (SD 1.24%), 3.11 (SD 0.16%), 4.47% (SD 0.3%), 3.22% (SD 0.74%), 1.97% (SD 0.42%) and 67.64 (SD 0.89), respectively. In conclusion, pectin extracted from pumpkin waste can be categorized as high methoxy pectin.

Abstract:The water-soluble food fi ber was extracted from pumpkin powder by the acid-hydrolysis method.The results show that 23.60% water-soluble food fi ber can be extracted under the condition of pH 1.0,2 h,80℃ and 8∶1(water∶solid).The product is yellow-white and the quality was well.

Abstract:[Objective] This paper aims to study a new method of extracting pumpkin polysaccharide from pumpkin. Single factor experiments were conducted to examine the effects of extracting time,temperature,the solid-liquid ratio and pH value on the extraction yield of polysaccharide from pumpkin. [Method] The best enzyme ratio and extraction conditions for complex enzymes extraction were determined through orthogonal tests. Scavenging ·OH and O-2 activities of pumpkin polysaccharides were also investigated by salicylic acid and improved self-oxidation of o-pheno methods respectively. [Results] The results showed that the biggest extraction yield of polysaccharide from pumpkin can be got when adding 1% cellulose enzyme,1.5% pectinase,1.0% papain and Na2HPO4-citric acid buffer solution (pH was 4.6),and oscillating for 30 min under water at 40 ℃ with the solid-liquid ratio of 1:30. In addition,pumpkin polysaccharides had a strong activity of eliminating ·OH,but very weak activity to scavenge O-2. [Conclusion] This study provided basic data for research and application of Pumpkin polysaccharide.

Abstract:The technology of extracting pectin from apple’s pomace with D151H cation resin is studied.The optimal extraction parameters and the extraction rate of pectin were discovered by single factor and orthogonal experiments.It indicates that the extraction rate of pectin will be increased while cation resin is used.Under the optimal conditions,the extraction rate of pectin is about 9%.

Abstract:Recently, pectin, a versatile polysaccharide with different industrial applications, has gained significant attention as an eco-friendly and functional ingredient. This study investigates pumpkin peels (Cucurbita maxima L., Mantua variety) as a novel source of pectin, using a microwave-assisted extraction method with citric acid-acidified water as solvent. The extraction conditions were optimized using a Design of Experiments approach, considering the solvent-to-solid ratio (SSR), pH, temperature, and extraction time. The optimized conditions (94.8 °C, 5 min, pH 1.5, and 46 mL/g SSR) resulted in a pectin yield of 18.05%. A comprehensive characterization of the extracted pectin was performed, including FT-IR spectroscopy, DSC, TGA, rheological properties, and techno-functional assessments such as water holding capacity and fat binding capacity. The results indicated a high degree of esterification (56.19 ± 0.87%), classifying the pumpkin peels (PP) extract as a high methoxyl pectin. PP pectin demonstrated potential as a stabilizer and emulsifying agent, although its high methoxyl content limits its use as a carrier for targeted bioactive delivery. The findings support the viability of using agricultural by-products to obtain valuable polysaccharides, contributing to waste valorization and sustainable industrial practices.

Abstract:In this study,pectin was extracted from grapefruit peels with hydrochloric acid and precipitated with 95% ethanol solution and 5% tartaric acid. The physical and chemical properties of pectin obtained were analyzed,including color,texture,degree of esterification,and water solubility. The effects of peel to solvent ratio,pH of the solvent,extraction temperature and extraction duration on pectin extraction rate were investigated. On the basis of single-factor experiments,an L9（ 34） orthogonal experiment was performed to screen the optimal extraction conditions. According to the results,the optimal combination of technical parameters was A1B3C1D3,i. e.,solid to liquid ratio 1∶ 40（ g∶ ml）,pH 2. 0,extraction duration 70 min,extraction temperature 90 ℃. The average pectin extraction rate was 68. 60%; the color of pectin extracted under the optimal conditions varied from milky white to light yellow; the degree of esterification of pectin extracts was65. 71%; the extracted pectin exhibited good water solubility.

Abstract:In order to deeply investigate the technology of pectin extraction,pectin samples were extracted from apple pomace with hydrochloric acid and two enzymes(cellulase and bemicellulase).Solubilized pectin was characterized for monosaccharide composition,intrinsic viscosity and viscosity average molecular weight by high performance anion exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection(HPAEC-PAD)and viscosity detection.Enzymic extraction methods gives higher yields and better solubility of solubilized pectin.Average viscous molecular weight of solubilized pectin with hydrochloric acid, cellulase and hemicellulase treatment is 292600,122400 and 165200Da,respectively.

Abstract:Ultrasonic-assisted extraction of pectin from apple pomace was investigated.The effects of material/liquid ratio,temperature,extraction time,pH on pectin yield were examed and the optimum extraction condition was obtained with orthogonal array design.The experiment was arranged with L9(34).Besides,the gelling characteristics of the pectin was investigated.Results showed that the optimal values of the above parameters were determined as follows:material/liquid ratio 1∶20(g/mL),80 ℃,extraction time 100 min and pH1.5.Under such conditions,the yield of pectin was 15.12 %.The gelling characteristics of the pectin was good.

Abstract:Extraction methods directly affect pectin extraction yield and physicochemical and structural characteristics. The effects of acid extraction (AE), ultrasonic-assisted acid extraction (UA), steam explosion pretreatment combined with acid extraction (SEA) and ultrasonic-assisted SEA (USEA) on the yield, structure, and properties of passion fruit pectin were studied. The pectin yield of UA was 6.5%, equivalent to that of AE at 60 min (5.3%), but the emulsion stability of UA pectin was poor. The pectin obtained by USEA improved emulsion stability. Compared with UA, it had higher protein content (0.62%), rhamnogalacturonan I (18.44%) and lower molecular weight (0.72 × 105 Da). In addition, SEA and USEA had high pectin extraction yields (9.9% and 10.7%) and the pectin obtained from them had lower degrees of esterification (59.3% and 68.5%), but poor thermal stability. The results showed that ultrasonic-assisted steam explosion pretreatment combined with acid extraction is a high-efficiency and high-yield method. This method obtains pectin with good emulsifying stability from passion fruit peel.

Abstract:The effects of extraction conditions on the yield of polysaccharides from the fruit of Chaenomeles sinensis (FCS) using a hot compressed water method were investigated. The results showed that an appropriately high temperature (150 °C) and a moderate extraction time (45 min) at a material to water ratio of 1 to 10 g/mL led to a high yield of alcohol precipitation polysaccharide (PA). The purified polysaccharides (CSP-1, CSP-2, and CSP-3) were successfully obtained using a DEAE-52 chromatographic column. Chemical analysis showed that CSP-2 and CSP-3 were homogenous and exhibited characteristics of esterified pectins, whereas CSP-2 mainly consisted of galacturonic acid (GalA), galactose (Gal), arabinose (Ara), rhamnose (Rha), and mannose (Man) with an average molecular weight of 59.1 kDa. Furthermore, CSP-1 possessed stronger antioxidant ability according to DPPH scavenging and reducing power compared with CSP-2 and CSP-3. However, it was weaker with respect to OH scavenging. The technical data presented in this study could help the industry make use of polysaccharides from FCS as a source of pectin for a range of pharmaceutical, culinary, and cosmetic products.

Abstract:Pumpkin peel is a main by-product produced during pumpkin consumption and processing, which is often disposed of as food waste. Therefore, it is necessary to develop ways to utilize pumpkin peel. In this study, the pectic polysaccharides were extracted from pumpkin peel, and their properties were evaluated. Results indicated that the extraction yield of pectin polysaccharides from Dongsheng pumpkin peel was the highest. Meanwhile, among the pumpkin peel pectic polysaccharides (PPs), Dongsheng PP exhibited the highest methylation degree (22.38%), acetylation degree (15.92%), molecular weight (6.26 × 105 Da) and initial apparent viscosity. Variety had little effect on the microstructure and functional groups of PPs. Compared with the other PP samples, Beibei PP (BBP) had the lowest molecular weight coupled with highest protein content, resulting in the highest emulsifying activity, emulsion stability and antioxidant activity. In addition, all the PPs had the ability to promote the growth of probiotics, and BBP and Banli PP (BLP) shown better capacities to promote the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium breve. Hence, it could be concluded that extraction pectin from pumpkin peel is a potential method for the utilization of pumpkin peel.

Abstract:In this work, watermelon rind was used for extraction of pectin with acetic acid solution. The effects of pH, temperature and extraction time on the pectin yield were investigated. Response surface based on Box-Behnken model was employed to optimize the extraction parameters. The model shows an optimum pectin yield of 18.21%, which is in agreement with the value confirmed through experiment (18.20%). The moisture content, ash content, degree of esterification, degree of methylation, equivalent weight, methoxy content, and anhydrouronic acid of the extracted pectin were determined. The values of the moisture content, ash content, degree of esterification, degree of methylation, equivalent weight, methoxy content, anhydrouronic acid are 8.42%, 5.1%, 57.30%, 23.5%, 983.9 mg/mol, 7.3% and 72.36%, respectively. The results show watermelon peel can be an alternative source for pectin production with reasonable pectin yield and pectin quality.

Abstract:Pectin was extracted from the sugar beet pulp by using an acid extraction and alcohol precipitation technique.Ratio of gaining pectin for solid-to-liquid ratio,temperature,pH and time of extraction were discussed.The optimal conditions for the extraction were determined as solid-to-liquid ratio1:20,temperature 90 ℃,pH 1.0 and time 3.5 h.In the best conditions,the average yield was 27.10%,with carbazole colorimetric determination of galacturonic acid content and pectin purity being of 17.82% and 65.76%,respectively.

Abstract:The effects of organic acid extractants on the yield and characteristics of pectin from sugar beet pulp were investigated with citric acid, malic acid and lactic acid at different pH (1.5 and 2.0) and time (1 h and 2h). The results demonstrated that the yields of pectins were directly correlated with the decrease of pH and reaction time, and the optimum yield of 17.2% was obtained at pH 1.5 and 2 h. Furthermore, the acid type also affected the physicochemical characteristics of pectin, especially on the esterification degree (42-71), galacturonic acid content (60.2-77.8%), emulsion activity (35.2-40.1%) and emulsion stability (62.1-79.4%), and a relatively single pectin mainly consisted of homogalacturonan could be obtained under a suitable reaction condition, which was an excellent crude material for the production of emulsion activity. Abstract:Pectin is complex polysaccharides contains 1, 4-linked x and β galactosyluronic acid residues extracted using alcohol precipitation method from citrus peels. The color of pectin from orange peel was pale yellow. Pectin is soluble in hot and cold alkaline water. The pectin is polysaccharide use as a stabilizer in foods. The pectin was extracted from various citrus fruit peels and its optimization by varying pH using hydrochloric acid and citric acid. Pectin can be used to improve the mouth feel and the pulp stability in juice-based drinks and as a stabilizer in acidic protein beverages. Extraction of pectin from citrus fruit peels like Orange peels, sweet orange and lemon gives higher yield of pectin. % Yield and rate of extraction for pectin from orange and sweet lemon (Mosambi) peels depends on parameters such as pH, temperature, solvent, time of extraction. Extraction carried out at pH 1.5 at 60 min with 60,70 & 80 OC temperature. The higher yield of pectin at pH value 1.5 and contact time 60 min. The extraction of pectin such as Citric Acid, Hydrochloric Acid, Sulphuric Acid, Nitric Acid and oxalic acid (C2H2O4). The time of extraction increased to an extreme there is less effect on yield of pectin reported and also decreased from maximum level due to thermal degradation of the extracted pectin.

Abstract:Sustainable innovation seeks more energy-efficient processes for producing highly demanded products from industrial by-products. This study follows this endeavor. Comparisons were made on two processes for producing pectins from citrus peel as well as the two derived pectin products: a high-intensity pulsed electric field (HIPEF) pretreatment of citrus peel powder followed by a milder acidic extraction (pH 2, heating at 70 degrees C for 1 h; pectin termed HIPEF-CP), and a conventional direct hot-acid extraction (pH 2, heating at 90 degrees C for 2 h; pectin termed CP). HIPEF-assisted extraction significantly improved pectin yield (by 8.48%) and production efficiency (by 100.23%) while reducing energy consumption. Both were low-methoxyl pectins with similar branching degrees and contents of rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I), protein, phenolic compounds, total alkaloids and vitamin C. Compared with CP, HIPEF-CP contained higher homogalacturonan content, higher galactose content, higher galacturonic acid content, lower arabinose content, lower xylose content, slightly lower degree of methyl esterification, higher linearity, lower side chain size, higher molecular weight, and wider molecular weight distribution. The antioxidant, emulsifying and emulsion-stabilizing abilities of HIPEF-CP were superior to those of CP, though both pectins were satisfactory emulsifiers, exhibiting good antioxidant activities and emulsifying capacities at pectin concentrations not lower than 1.0%. The HIPEF pretreatment of citrus peel made the subsequent acidic pectin extraction feasible under milder conditions, to produce pectin with desired antioxidant and emulsifying capacities.
Effect of Enzyme‐assisted Acid Extraction on Citrus High‐methoxyl Pectin Riched in RG‐I: Preparation, Structure Characterisation and Physico‐chemical Properties

Abstract:SummaryThe properties of pectin extracted by enzyme‐assisted nitric acid (EAE‐N) and pectin extracted by enzyme‐assisted oxalic acid (EAE‐O) were analysed and compared with pectin extracted by nitric acid (AE‐N) and pectin extracted by oxalic acid (AE‐O) systematically. The yield of pectin obtained by the enzyme‐assisted acid method (23.73% ~ 25.60%) was significantly higher than that by acid extraction method (19.75% ~ 20.60%). Monosaccharide analyses demonstrated that the enzyme‐assisted acid method was able to attain more branched rhamnogalacturonan I (RG‐I) regions (36.59% ~ 42.06%) than using acid solely (31.01% ~ 34.58%). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT–IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) analyses indicated that there was no obvious difference in the characteristic structure of pectin. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) images revealed that EAE‐N and EAE‐O had more short side chains and cross‐link compared with AE‐N and AE‐O. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) shows that EAE‐N and EAE‐O have good thermal stability. All pectin samples showed a shear‐thinning fluid flow behaviour and an elastic gel‐like behaviour. The results suggested that enzyme‐assisted acid provided a viable alternative method for the extraction of pectin.
