Abstract:Physical properties of five basic seed coating agents were examined in the experiment. The most desirable basic coating agent was selected out for cultivation of rice by direct seeding, followed by addition of different active compounds and various formulae were proposed. The influence of film coating based on these formulae on germination, seedling quality, field growth and development of the directly seeded rice plants were studied. The results indicated that basic coating agent No. 5, which was safe for seed germination of the directly seeded rice, was relatively more ideal than the other agents used. The treatments with coating agent formula No.4 or No.5 showed no inhibitory effect on seed germination. They substantially promoted root growth, reduced shoot height in cultivars Jiayu 948 and Zhongzu No.1,and led to significantly increase in proline content and peroxidase (POD) activity in the seedlings. Coating with agent of the formula No.5 also significantly increased the chlorophyll content of the seedlings. Field experiment showed that the seedling establishments were improved, damage due to rice thrips were remarkably reduced and yields were raised by 27.48% and 23.52% as compared to un-coated controls after cultivar Zhongzu No.1 was treated by coating agent formula No.4 and No.5 respectively. The two-plot field experiments in the following year showed that the treatments with coating agent formula No.4 improved the seedling establishment in Jiayu 948 and Zhongzu No.1 and significantly raised the yield in Zhongzu No.1.

Abstract:Lodging in cereal crops can result in yield loss and harvesting difficulties for growers. Application of plant growth regulator (PGR) has been an indispensable management practice to reduce lodging problems that are often exacerbated during high wind growing conditions and/or high nitrogen (N)/water environments, but the data is limited in the Columbia Basin of Oregon. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of two PGR products (chlormequat chloride-CC, trinexapac-ethyl-TE) at different rates and application timings on two soft white winter wheat varieties (ORCH-102 and SY Ovation). Crop growth (stem height and thickness), yield-related (spike density as ears m−2, seeds per spike, grain weight) and quality parameters (test weight, protein) were measured for two cropping seasons from October 2017 to July 2019 following the application of the two PGR products at tillering (GS21-26), stem elongation (GS30-32), and/or flag leaf (GS37-39) stages under a high-N fertilizer scenario. In both growing seasons, no lodging problems were recorded for any treatments. The plant height was reduced after PGR application, but the impact on stem thickness was limited. PGR application slightly affected wheat yield, yield components, testing weight, and protein level in both growing seasons. Our results suggested that the effect of PGR application is relatively limited if no lodging problem occurred.
Study on Optimal Concentration of Uniconazole in Rape Coating Agent and Field Effect of Film Coating on Rape Seed Germination and Subsequent Growth of Seedlings.

Abstract:Rape seed coating agents with different concentration uniconazole were used for film coating and their effects on rape of three cultivars were studied. Optimal concentration of uniconazole in coating agents was selected out based on comparison of germination rate, chlorophyll content, seedling height and dry weight of the grown-up seedlings. Field experiments showed that the selected rape coating agent with optimal concentration of uniconazole (Coat I) effectively protected rape seedlings from damage by plant lice. It significantly reduced seedling height and main stem length, increased the number of leaves and green leaves at the three-leaf stage. It also had some effect in increasing width of main stem and seedling dry weight. Besides, the number of effective branches, pods per plant and seed harvest of three cultivars were also increased. Yield of Shuang 72 was increased by 18.9% as compared with the control which was not given film coating treatment. The results indicated that uniconazole could be used in preparation of seed coating agent in order to give rise to stronger seedlings of better quality and effectively resolve the problem of seedlings with high and slim main stems in rape production.

Abstract:Waterlogging is an important constraint of global production of rape. The effects of seed film coating with 0.0075% uniconazole on the growth and physiology was investigated using seedlings from three varieties of rape (Brassica napus L.) subjected to waterlogging. While seed coating with uniconazole had no significant effect on germination percentage during waterlogging stress, it enhanced root vigour, increased root length, root volume and root dry weight. It also significantly enhanced leaf dry weight and ratio of root to shoot, but induced a significant decrease in shoot height and stem dry weight. Seed film coating with uniconazole also significantly increased the activities of the antioxidant enzymes, POD, CAT and SOD, and soluble sugar concentration during waterlogging. Thus, it suggests that seed film coating with uniconazole at a suitable concentration can improve rape seedling growth and increase seedling establishment during waterlogging.

Abstract:Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most important food sources in the world. The potential impacts of elevated CO2 on wheat yield and grain quality will have profound influences on the supply and nutritional value of wheat products as well as on many industrial sectors. A growth-chamber experiment was designed to estimate how soil moisture influences the potential effects of elevated CO2 concentration ([CO2]) on wheat growth, water use and grain yield. Spring wheat (T. aestivum cv. Ganmai 8139) was grown in pots placed in controlled growth chambers and was subjected to two [CO2] (approximately 350 and 700μl/l, respectively) and two soil water levels (80 and 40% of field water capacity (FWC), respectively). High [CO2] increased plant shoot dry weight by 89% under 80% FWC and by 53% under 40% FWC. Grain yield of wheat was markedly increased under elevated [CO2] with greater grain number and harvest index. The ratio of plant shoot dry weight to height was increased by 75% under high [CO2] at high soil moisture, and by 54% at low moisture. Water use efficiency of shoot (WUEs) and grain yield (WUEg) were increased under high [CO2] because the magnitude of the increase in shoot dry weight and grain yield was greater than that of the cumulative consumption of water under high [CO2] conditions. When wheat plants were under high [CO2] conditions and maintained at high moisture, the WUEs and WUEg were increased by 62 and 128%, respectively. Elevated [CO2] resulted in lower concentrations of mineral nutrients (N, P, K and Zn), lysine and crude protein in mature grains. This was probably caused by a dilution effect induced by great increment of carbohydrate in grains. The total quantity of mineral nutrients, lysine and crude protein accumulated in grains per hectare were still increased under high [CO2] due to increase in grain yield. Our results indicate that high [CO2] is beneficial to plant growth, yield and WUE, while grain quality was lowered under high [CO2] conditions as reflected by the increased crude starch content, and corresponding decreases in mineral nutrients, lysine and crude protein concentrations. The analysis of yield components suggested that the yield increase was mainly attributable to an increase in the number of grains. However, the effects of CO2 enrichment on plants depend on the availability of soil moisture, and plants may benefit more from CO2 enrichment when sufficient water is supplied.
Effect of Different Plant Growth Regulators on the Stem Characteristics and Yield in Winter Wheat

Abstract:Field experiments were conducted to study effect of spraying different plant growth regulators on the stem characteristics and yield of winter wheat. We set spraying 175 mg / kg Paclobutrazol( SP1),300 mg / kg Cycocel( SP2),350 mg /kg Maijujin( SP3),333 mg /kg Jinfeng( SP4),300 mg /kg DPC( SP5),333 mg /kg Bihu( SP6) and water control 7 treatments,the wheat plant height,internode length,stem diameter,dry weight of stem,lodging resistance,yield and yield components were analyzed. The results showed that,different plant growth regulators reduced plant height,enhanced basal stalk resistance and lodging resistance,lodging resistance: SP3 SP6 SP4 SP1 SP5 SP2 CK. The effect of different treatments on wheat basal internodes length: 1st internode 2nd internode 3rd internode. The grain yield of winter wheat: SP3 SP5 SP6 SP1 SP2 CK SP4,among them SP3 and SP5 treatments remarkably increased grain yield by 3. 2% and 2. 3%,respectively. Different treatments had larger effect on effective spike number and grain number per spike,and smaller effect on 1000-grains weight. 2013- 2014 year winter wheat under the condition of no lodging place,the results of spraying with Paclobutrazol and DPC were better than other growth regulators.

Abstract:With the same species of soybean Dongnong434 as raw material,plant growth regulator used for chemical control.Different regulators(three iodine acid,nitric acid rare earth and 2-N,N-diethylamino ethyl acetate) are used on the effect of soybean yield,and physiological characteristics and some internal storage material structure change.The results showed that the development of different stages in the soybean sprayed with different plant growth regulator,but its yield and characters than the control group improved significantly.Some physical and chemical indicators have been increased,including use of rare earth nitrate regulators on soybean grain protein and fat content increased effect is the most obvious.Growth regulator cells can impact on the microstructure of stored cell of soybean,the content of soybean seeds cells of the storage material was increased,and the shape of protein was more large at seed filling stage.For the regulator effects on soybean growth and promotion of crop planting to provide some theoretical basis.

Abstract:[Objective] The objective of this experiment was to study the effect of plant growth regulator,Maijujin,on yield and plant height in wheat cultivar Dekang 961.[Method] The research was carried out with salt-tolerant wheat cultivar Dekang 961 by spraying plant growth regulator at standing and jointing stage.The main traits,including yield,grain number per spike,1 000-seed weight,plant height,spike length and stem nodes,were evaluated.[Result] Increasing Maijujin application times shortened the length of lower internodes,particularly the top second stem and under-spike internode,lead to significantly reducing in plant height.The Maijujin also improved wheat yield components.With the increase of application times,spike grain number,seed weight and wheat yield increased accordingly.[Conclusion] The effect of twice Maijujin spraying at standing stage with an interval of 14 days was the best.It not only significantly reduced the plant height but also improved spike grain number and seed weight,which improved wheat yield in the end.

Abstract:Vicia villosa Roth was used to research the effects of growth regulators,Paclobutrazol (MET),Chlorocholine chloride(CCC)and Mepiquat chloride(DPC),on fresh grass yield,seed yield and yield traits in Wuchuan county,Inner Mongolia in 2014. The results showed that the use of growth regula-tors restrained the growth of V. villosa Roth,reduced the fresh forage yield of V. villosa Roth,but the difference was not significant ;spraying V. villosa Roth with CCC twice had remarkable effect on increas-ing podding number,the number of podding per plant was 72.7,the seeds yield increased significantly (P<0.05).The seeds yield of V. villosa Roth sprayed with CCC twice was the highest,spraying MET in-creased seed yield by 24.3%,spraying CCC increased seed yield by 20.8% ~ 27.0%,spraying DPC in-creased seed yield by 10.5%~15.6%.

Abstract:Abstract The article presents the results of experiments to study the reaction of winter soft wheat of the Nemchinovskaya 17 variety to growth regulators with retardant properties. It was found that the use of growth regulators at the end of the tillering-exit phase into the tube reduced the height of plants by an average of 0.115 m compared to the control without treatment, where the height of plants was on average 0.813 m. According to the results of observations, a differentiated reaction of the tested winter wheat to lodging was established when using the studied growth regulators. In plants treated with Reggi and Messidor growth regulators, lodging was not observed and ranged from 4.4 to 5 points of lodging on the control without treatment – 3 points. The tested plant growth regulators have a significant impact on the yield of winter wheat of the studied variety and the formation of its structural elements. The increase in yield according to the variants of the experiment was about 4.1-6.1 t/ha depending on the type of drug. The highest yield increases were obtained with the use of Reggi at a dose of 1.5 l/ha.

Abstract:Waxy wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is grown throughout the world for its specific quality. Fertilization and planting density are two crucial factors that affect waxy wheat yield and photosynthetic capacity. The objectives of the research were to determine the effects of fertilization and planting density on photosynthetic characteristics, yield, and yield components of waxy wheat, including Yield, SSR, TGW, GNPP, GWPP, PH, HI, Pn, Gs, Ci, E and WUE using the method of field experiment, in which there were three levels (150, 300, and 450 kg ha–1) of fertilizer application rate and three levels (1.35, 1.8, and 2.25 × 106 plants ha–1) of planting density. The results suggested that photosynthetic characteristics, yield, and yield components had close relationship with fertilization levels and planting density. Under the same plant density, with the increase of fertilization, Yield, SSR, TGW, GNPP, GWPP, HI, Pn, Gs, E and WUE increased and then decreased, PH increased, but Ci decreased. Under the same fertilization, with the increase of plant density, Yield, SSR, TGW, GNPP, GWPP, HI increased and then decreased, PH, Pn, Gs and E increased, PH and WUE declined. The results also showed that F2 (300 kg ha–1) and D2 (1.8 × 106 plants ha–1) was a better match in this experiment, which could obtain a higher grain yield 4961.61 kg ha–1. Consequently, this combination of fertilizer application rate and plant densities are useful to get high yield of waxy wheat.

Abstract:Studying the long‐term effect of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (e[CO2]) on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) over multiple generations has received increasing attention. Here, five wheat cultivars were grown under ambient CO2 concentration (a[CO2], 400 ppm) and e[CO2] (800 ppm), respectively, for three consecutive generations (G1 to G3) under two nitrogen (N) levels (1N and 2N). Compared to plants grown under a[CO2], e[CO2] increased shoot biomass and grain yield (GY) over three generations and the enhancement was greater in G3 than in G1. However, plant N concentration was lowered by e[CO2] and the reduction was not mitigated by higher N supply. The carbon (C) concentration significantly increased in leaf and stem but decreased in grain, indicating an inhibited C translocation to grain under e[CO2]. Most importantly, these negative impacts were exacerbated in G3. Concentrations of mineral nutrients in grain were significantly lowered by e[CO2] with larger reduction in G3 than in G1 in some micronutrients such as Zn, Cu and Fe. These findings suggest that long‐term exposure to e[CO2] sustained the positive effects on plant growth and production but aggravated the reduction of grain quality over multiple generations. Among the five cultivars, 325Jimai showed the greatest increase in shoot biomass and GY, and a greater sink capacity compared with the other cultivars, indicating its potential for future breeding strategies.

Biochar Coating as a Cost-Effective Delivery Approach to Promoting Seed Quality, Rice Germination, and Seedling Establishment

Abstract:The application of high-quality seeds ensures successful crop establishment, healthy growth, and improved production in both quantity and quality. Recently, biochar-based seed coating has been recognized as a new, effective, and environmentally friendly method to enhance seed quality, seedling uniformity, and nutrient availability. To study the impact of biochar coating on the surface mechanical properties of coated seeds, rice emergence and growth, and related physical and physiological metabolic events, laboratory experiments were performed on two water-saving and drought-resistance rice (WDR) varieties (Huhan1512 and Hanyou73) using biochar formulations with varying contents (20%–60%). The results showed that the appropriate concentration of biochar significantly improved emergence traits and seedling performance of the two rice varieties, compared to the uncoated treatment, and that the optimal percentage of biochar coating was 30% (BC30). On average, across both varieties, BC30 enhanced emergence rate (9.5%), emergence index (42.9%), shoot length (19.5%), root length (23.7%), shoot dry weight (25.1%), and root dry weight (49.8%). The improved germination characteristics and vigorous seedling growth induced by biochar coating were strongly associated with higher water uptake by seeds, increased α-amylase activity and respiration rate, and enhanced accumulation of soluble sugar and soluble protein. Moreover, the evaluation results of mechanical properties related to seed coating quality found that increasing the proportion of biochar in the coating blend decreased the integrity and compressive strength of the coated seeds and reduced the time required for coating disintegration. In conclusion, biochar coating is a cost-effective strategy for enhancing crop seed quality and seedling establishment.

Abstract:The improvement of grain quality and yield is key in China's wheat production. Both grain quality and yield depend on used genotype, growth conditions including soil fertility, as well as crop management, especially nutrient management. Long-term fertility experiments facilitate research on the effects of nutrient management on wheat yield and quality. The long-term effects of nutrient management on wheat yield have been reported in literatures, but effects on grain quality are less known. In the present paper, a 20-year nutrient management experiment with wheat-maize double cropping system was used to investigate the effects of manure and fertilizers on grain yield and quality in different winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars, during three growing seasons from 2000 to 2003. The eight nutrient management treatments included: a control without supply of external nutrients (CK), only N fertilizer (N), N and P fertilizer (NP), N, P and K fertilizer (NPK), only manure (M), manure and N fertilizer (MN), manure and N and P fertilizer (MNP), manure and N, P and K fertilizer (MNPK). In the 2000～2001 season, the gluten rich cultivars Wanmai 38 and Yan 2801 were used, while in 2001～2002 and 2003～2003, the gluten rich cultivars Yan 2801, Xuzhou 26 and the gluten poor cultivar Xuzhou 25 were used. The main effect of manure was significant for grain yield, while it was insignificant for most quality traits. The main effects of fertilizer and the interaction between manure and fertilizer were significant on both grain yield and major grain quality traits. The long-term application of manure in combination with fertilizers had more effect on most of the quality traits compared to the fertilizer treatments only. The results indicate that the combined use of organic and inorganic nutrient sources favors the quality of gluten rich wheat varieties, but reduces the quality of gluten poor wheat varieties. Soil organic matter, total N, available P and available K in the soil were not correlated with the major grain quality traits, but were significantly correlated with the grain yield of all varieties. This suggests that mainly nutrient management and not soil fertility determined wheat grain quality in the present study.

Abstract:A field experiment was carried out on cultivated loessial soil in semiarid area with 415 mm precipitation and spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum ) was used as an indicating crop to study the effects of plastic film mulching period(including no mulching,mulching for 30 days,mulching for 60 days,after sowing and mulching for whole growing period), soil water storage amount in profile before sowing (including low and high treatments) and nitrogen fertilizer application (including no nitrogen application and nitrogen application 75 kg/hm 2) on the spring wheat growth.After being covered with plastic film,the root of crop grew quickly,and the ratio of the root that distributed in middle and low soil layer increased,it was useful to absorb the water in deep soil.The flourishing root assured the balance between the absorb organ and the dehydrate organ of crop,coordinated the relation of dry matter distribution between the root and the shoot ,and with the premise of not affecting the absorption ability of root,it could also enhance the ratio of the breed distribution of the photosynthate.The results showed that uncovering the plastic film at right moment could improve the distribution of photosynthate,stimulate the root to plunge into the deep soil and keep the activation during later growth period.The root biomass of the top layer and the middle layer (30-60 cm) in the treatment of the plastic film mulching for the whole growth period was lower than other treatments apparently,the reason was that plastic film mulching during later growth period made soil temperature rise rapidly and led to large numbers of root mortality,and root activity decreased.As a result,uncovering plastic film in time could ensure that the ratio between the root and the shoot keeps at high level during later growth period,and plastic film mulching for the whole growth period was unfavorable to keep the ratio between the root and the shoot at high level during later growth period.

Abstract:Wheat is one of the main crops in northern China, and drought has been a major problem in wheat cultivation. As a new type of plant hormone, Strigolactone (SLs) , its effect on drought resistance of wheat needs to be studied extensively. In this study, the effects of SLs on the growth and development of wheat from florescence stage to maturity stage were determined by plant physiological and enzyme-linked immunoassay techniques. The results showed that, with the progress of reproductive development, leaf spraying exogenous SLs not only delayed the peak of ABA content, promoted the increase of IAA and GA content in the early stage, changed the metabolic balance of hormone in leaves, and thus changed the physiological metabolic process. Especially under the condition of high density, the effects of SLs were more obvious. And, with the change of the blade metabolic balance, its net photosynthetic rate and the level of carbon dioxide fixation increased, and SOD and POD activity enhanced, MDA content decreased, indicating that aging rate of leaves was slowed down and matter accumulation ability enhanced, so as to improve the filling rate and increase the weight of the mature grain, eventually promoted the yield of wheat. Through the above analysis, it can be seen that exogenous SLs can effectively improve the yield of wheat under high density condition, which provides reliable theoretical and technical support for its practical application in the field.

Abstract:Bread is one of the most important processed foods of wheat flour worldwide. Breadmaking quality is determined by grain protein content and its composition and is highly influenced by fertilization management. This study investigated the effects of spraying different combinations of exogenous regulators on breadmaking quality of the flour. Three spraying schemes including Potassium glutamate+Zinc+Urea (G), Methionine+ Zinc+Urea (M), Cysteine+ Zinc+Urea (C) were screened out to improve the yield and total protein contents in the flour. In addition to protein, the amounts of gliadin, glutenin, glutenin subunits, and gluten were elevated in the treatments listed above. Exogenous regulators, on the other hand, increased bread volume by 14% to 17%. In comparison to G and C, M treatment more efficiently increased the protein quality of inner endosperm rather than aleurone, resulting in superior gluten quality and breadmaking quality of the flour. Our results provide an optimizing combination for improving the quality of bread wheat and demonstrate the varied modulations of exogenous regulators on the spatial distribution of protein in wheat grain.
Investigation of Soy Protein–based Biostimulant Seed Coating for Broccoli Seedling and Plant Growth Enhancement

Abstract:This research presents a novel method of using plant-derived protein hydrolysates as seed coating materials. The objective of this study was to develop seed coating formulations using soy flour, a sustainable, inexpensive, and green source, as a biostimulant using broccoli as the model system. A 10% suspension of soy flour was used as the seed treatment binder in all coatings. The solid particulate filler was composed of mixtures of soy flour, cellulose, and diatomaceous earth, together termed as SCD. All SCD components were homogenized in water, then dried and ground to a fine particle size <106 μm. The SCD coatings were applied with rotary pan seed coating equipment at 25% of the seed weight. Increasing the proportion of soy flour increased the seed coating strength and also the time for the coating to disintegrate after soaking in water. As a result, the seed coatings reduced the percentage germination and the germination rate compared with the nontreated control. However, the 10-day-old seedling root and shoot growth showed significant improvement for all SCD coating treatments compared with controls. Plant growth and development was also measured after 30 days in the greenhouse. Fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW), leaf area, plant height, leaf development, Soil-Plant Analyses Development (SPAD) index (chlorophyll measurement), and nitrogen (N) per plant were all greater from coatings with 30%, 40%, and 50% soy flour than the noncoated control. Nitrogen, from the soy flour applied in the seed coatings, ranged from 0.024 to 0.073 mg per seed, while the enhanced N per plant ranged from 1.7 to 8.5 mg. The coating treatment with 0.063 mg N per seed resulted in the greatest plant leaf area and highest N content. Nitrogen applied in the seed coating only accounted for 1% to 2% of the enhanced N in the plants, indicating the soy flour acted as a biostimulant rather than a fertilizer.
