Abstract:The visibility of translator's style is a much-discussed topic in translation studies with the application of corpus tools. So far, however, no agreement has been reached. The present study aims to explore this issue by a comparison of three Chinese translations of the English literary work, Alice's Adventure in Wonderland, using two stylometric techniques, bootstrap consensus tree analyses, and bootstrap consensus network analyses. The results show that all the three Chinese translations preserved the style of the original text and that individual translator's style could not be identified based on the entire set of part-of-speech (POS) tags. Furthermore, a feature selection method (the chi-square metric) was used to obtain the top fifteen distinctive POS unigrams and bigrams, and these distinctive features successfully identified translatorial fingerprints across the three translations examined. The findings suggest that translators have their own stylistic choices when translating the same text, but their stylistic differences can only be detected by distinctive features. Our attempt to combine feature selection methods and stylometric techniques may offer new insights into the investigation of translator's stylistic visibility in translation studies.

Abstract:The lingo-stylistic determination of Fu Lei' s translation can be accounted for by referring to the aesthetic ideals he upheld, the importance he attached to fluency and readability of translations, and his concern for the target readers' acceptability. And this determination in turn accounts for his espousal of "bearing a spiritual resemblance to the original" as a guiding principle for translation and for the marked domesticating tendency that informs his translational works. Inspired by this principle, he believed that ideally, a translation should read like "the original author writing in the target language." To produce such effects, he would not hesitate to transform the source language' s lexical and syntactic features.

Abstract:Translating poetry is a very complex process. The paradoxical nature of untranslatability and translatability of poetry has been noticed by Hai An (The translation of poetry by the translator-cum-poet. Chinese Translator Journals 2005; 6:27-30), citing two famous scholars who are holding totally different opinions toward poetry translation. Robert Frost purports that 'poetry is what gets lost in translation', and Susan Bassnet advocates 'poetry is what we gain in translation'. However, the common ground between these two drastic opinions is that poetry translation is no more a repetition of the original works than a reproduction. There are both similarities and discrepancies between the translated works and the original pieces, or in another word: 'harmony in diversity'. This study aims to testify the above-mentioned proposal in a clear and objective manner, by comparing the original poetry texts (twenty randomly selected poems from Shakespearean sonnets) with their translated versions (the corresponding Chinese-translated versions by four different translators) from the perspective of vocabulary, word frequency distribution and part-of-speech (POS) frequency distribution. The results have corroborated the previous proposal: first, there is no significant difference in terms of vocabulary size and the text management styles between the translated poems and the original ones. Second, there is a significant difference in the word frequency distribution and POS frequency distribution between translated poems and the original ones. Third, there are also differences in the POS frequency distribution in poems translated by different authors. Furthermore, the translation style could distinguish professional translators from professional poets.

Abstract:Whereas translation scholars have succeeded in reaching agreements on many fundamental issues in their field,whether these consensuses are all relevant to and applicable in real-life situations of translation practices deserves a careful examination.A reality check reveals that many of the seemingly-solved problems or the seemingly-unified thoughts have not been generally recognized or implemented in the actual practices of translating.A case in point is the discrepancy between theorists' shared understanding of the tripartite criterion of" faithfulness,"" expressiveness" and" elegance" and its popular application in the assessment of translation in many practical fields.Taking notice of the gap,this paper seeks to rethink the criterion in question from a perspective that combines theoretical insights and practical imperatives and is sufficiently informed with the tension between the two.

Abstract:No agreement has yet been reached as to whether translators are visible or not in translation. To answer this question, we first chose Lin Yutang and James Legge as cases, supplemented their translations with their originals, and then applied Principal Component Analysis along with N-MFW metrics to the texts for their stylistic features. In our cases, we found that (1) for each translator, the styles of their originals and translations vary; (2) for both translators, the styles of their translations converge for the same source text; (3) the two translators preserve only part of their stylistic fingerprints in their translations, suggesting the existence of a powerful compensation mechanism. Our findings bring new insights into the translator's style, help settle the (in)visibility dispute, and illustrate effective metrics for developing translator identification tools.

Abstract:Unlike most of the definitions which confine their observations merely to the static aspect of style, this paper ventures a view that most of the literary works present a dynamic aspect of style as well, that is, as the story proceeds, style of a text may rise and fall and result in an uneven distribution, thus introduces here a new concept -the style group. This paper proposes that style groups be taken as a unit of translation in the process of style reproduction, the advantage of which lies in that: taking style group as a whole, a translator is likely to keep the consistency of the general style inside the group, therefore preserves the shift between groups. What's more, the guidance of a style group rather than the whole text facilitates recognizing linguistic features which contributes to the stylistic effect of the text, so that a better reproduction of stylistic markers can step from the original work.
English-Chinese and Chinese-English Translations of Literary Texts: The Influence of Stylistic Features on the Translation Process and Eyetracking Technology

Abstract:This study is based on an experimental method of eye-tracking to investigate how translators perceive and understand translated literary texts and how different stylistic features influence their perception. This methodology allowed us to observe which parts of the text translators focused on the most, providing valuable data on their reading patterns and cognitive processes. Among English-Chinese translators, 95 out of 120 participants (79%) showed a tendency to prioritize faithfully conveying the source text's meaning over crafting a target text that aligns with Chinese stylistically. In the specific context of Chinese-English translation out of the 120 instances examined, the translators exhibited a reduced fixation duration on words in the source language, accounting for 34 instances (28%). This suggests a greater concern for preserving the source text's meaning rather than adapting it to the target culture. This research can assist translators and linguists in translating the stylistic features of English and Chinese literary texts more effectively. Future studies can explore other language stylistic features that may impact translation and compare translation styles across various literary genres and language pairs.

Abstract:Language is a necessary means of communication; the expression skills of language contain rich cultural connotations. In recent years, under the influence of the Internet, the integration and collision of Chinese and foreign cultures are gradually influenced by multi-cultures. In the original process of Chinese-English translation transformation, its influence also promotes the development of cross-cultural language. For English translation, the work of translation is not only the literal conversion of language words, but also the combination of English translation with cultural background. Therefore, in the process of English language conversion, we should pay attention to the cultural differences between the source culture and the target culture. In order to find a translation method more suitable for modern oral communication, it is necessary to study the characteristics of English speech and cross-cultural connotation. In the process of English translation, the task goal is to achieve the coordination between the source language and the target language. However, if we pay attention to coordination, it is difficult to translate in practice. Therefore, we need to deeply understand and constantly learn the differences between the cultural connotations and word connotations of different countries, and carry out language conversion in a more appropriate way.

Abstract:Dissimilarity and similarity are two basic concepts that the study of translation frequently touches upon. The untranslatable is usually traceable to dissimilarity, and the translatable, to similarity. Correspondingly, the unity of opposites between the two profoundly exhibits a comprehensive picture of translation. This paper, proceeding with the definition of dissimilarity, probes into the relationship between selfness and otherness to reveal the cross-cultural essence of translation. Confronted with the contradiction between dissimilarity and similarity, one must consider these important factors: expression of cultural positions as well as cultural reconstruction, and the translation strategies of foreignization and domestication.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to report on a number of recent developments in the study of translation and to focus on the issue of ‘markedness’, singled out here as a central element in the process of translation. Linguistic markedness and the twin notion of ‘textual evaluativeness’ are examined as part of the wider issue of dealing with ‘style’ in translation or the need to translate not only ‘what’ is said, but also ‘how’ it is said. The perspective adopted is essentially applied text-linguistic: the linguistic focus is on the ‘text’ as a unit of both communication and translation, while the scope of application is specifically informed by a practitioner research paradigm. The markedness, evaluativeness and style theme is pursued against a backdrop of how the theory and practice of translation has evolved in the last 50 years or so from an emphasis on formal notions of translation ‘equivalence’ within the ‘linguistics phase’, to more dynamic notions of equivalence within the ‘cultural model’, and ultimately to models of translation which see equivalence in the light of text in context and beyond.

Abstract:Abstract This study examines the style of two English translations of Hongloumeng , by David Hawkes, and Xianyi Yang and Gladys Yang. It makes use of multidimensional analysis to identify how the two translations differ in their sub-registers (narration and fictional speech). The results reveal that the Yangs’ translation of narration is relatively more narrative and context-independent, whereas Hawkes’ is more active and context-bound. Similarly, Hawkes’ translation of fictional speech is more conversational and interactional and tends more towards the orality scale with a strong emphasis on the involvement of fictional characters. In contrast, the Yangs’ translation of fictional speech tends to be more informational and explicit. These stylistic differences reflect the translators’ conscious and/or unconscious choices, which are attributable to their language backgrounds, translation strategies, and cultural stances. By taking sub-register variation and the functions of linguistic features into consideration, the article outlines a new approach to investigating translation style.

Abstract:Abstract The core of translation is language conversion, but it should be more of an aesthetic experience, a transformation of different ways of thinking. This paper proposes a neural semantic analysis method for English translation based on text similarity calculation. The technique uses a large-scale corpus to train the vector space model of words, establishes a concept-context matrix through the term-document matrix, and determines each value of the concept vector with a weight according to the literary translation in the knowledge base. The information extraction and evaluation of the English-translated text through semantic similarity calculation provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent analysis of style conversion and linguistic, and aesthetic reproduction of the English-translated text. The study will take the Lin Yutang translation and the Ricardian translation of The Analects of Confucius as an example to develop the analysis of style transformation and reproduction of linguistic beauty of the English-translated text from both lexical and syntactic levels. The results show that the lexical density of Lin Yutang’s translation is 0.5866, while that of Rie Jacob’s translation is 0.5334, with the former significantly larger than the latter. It shows that Lin Yutang’s translation of The Analects of Confucius adopts a naturalization strategy, i.e., To disseminate Chinese culture in a way that is authentic, familiar to English readers, and easy to understand, so as to make his linguistic expression more emotional.

Abstract:In translation practice, the translator is not only one of the main subjects, but an indispensable factor. The translator’s subjectivity is mainly concerned with the translator’s subjective consciousness, which actually includes two aspects: the translator’s understanding of the original text and the choice of the target language in the translation process. Under the guidance of this theory, translation studies have shifted from the author-centered to the translator-centered, and scholars have turned their attention to the study of the translator’s subjectivity. From the perspective of translator’s subjectivity, this paper will make a comparative study of several versions. Combining the three characteristics of translator’s subjectivity, this paper studies the language style, cultural understanding and subjective initiative of different translators in different translations of A Little Incident, so as to bring readers aesthetic reading experience and feelings. In addition, the author will analyze the translation strategies, words and sentence patterns, such as positive and negative translation, addition translation and reduction translation, in order to show how the translator chooses the appropriate diction, then to the original understanding, perception, comprehensive use of close reading, analysis, interpretation, to achieve the credibility and elegance, to meet the ideological needs of readers. In a word, the translator should give full play to the translator’s subjectivity and make his own contribution to spreading Chinese culture and civilization on the premise of respecting the original text and author.

Abstract:In the contemporary era, there is a burgeoning trend of intercultural communication among nations, prominently encompassing interactions within the scientific and technological (Sci. & Tech) domain. Within China, there has been a conspicuous dearth in the realm of Science and Technology translation, notably concerning the precise rendition of intricate professional knowledge across specific specialized fields and the requisite translation calibre. This deficiency has been accentuated by the absence of pertinent theoretical frameworks. Within this context, this research delves into the stylistic attributes of English for Science and Technology (EST) and elucidates translation strategies within the framework established by Yan Fu. Initially, the study scrutinizes the distinctive characteristics of EST, encompassing lexicon, syntax, and textual structures. Subsequently, it extrapolates these findings to the domain of Sci. & Tech translation. The ensuing section chronicles the evolution of domestic translation studies, culminating in the exposition of Yan Fus translation standards-namely, faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance. The paper concludes by summarizing the targeted translation strategies for Sci. & Tech translation, encompassing meticulous preparation, the pursuit of precision, and rigorous review and refinement processes.

Abstract:In translation studies, the role of the translator is becoming more and more conspicuous. Despite the fact that translation is a transfer from one language to another, especially a semantic one, the role of the translator is, on no account, a simple proxy of technological communication or a passive transcultural mediator. During recent years, scholars have conducted an array of researches on translation process, from the perspective of linguistics, cognitive psychology, psychological linguistics, etc. As for translation process, it is imperative that the translator take various questions into consideration, such as the characteristics of the target language, the cultural factors of the target language, the perception of the original text, the translator’s habits, etc. The English translation of Yuewei Caotang Biji by Yi Izzy Yu and John Yu Branscum has been conceived of as popular in the English world, and has achieved superb effect of transcultural communication. This translated work’s strategy of translating as editing has substantial effects in its’ success, which renders this book easily available to readers in the target culture.

Abstract:Language style transferring rephrases text with specific stylistic attributes while preserving the original attribute-independent content. One main challenge in learning a style transfer system is a lack of parallel data where the source sentence is in one style and the target sentence in another style. With this constraint, in this paper, we adapt unsupervised machine translation methods for the task of automatic style transfer. We first take advantage of style-preference information and word embedding similarity to produce pseudo-parallel data with a statistical machine translation (SMT) framework. Then the iterative back-translation approach is employed to jointly train two neural machine translation (NMT) based transfer systems. To control the noise generated during joint training, a style classifier is introduced to guarantee the accuracy of style transfer and penalize bad candidates in the generated pseudo data. Experiments on benchmark datasets show that our proposed method outperforms previous state-of-the-art models in terms of both accuracy of style transfer and quality of input-output correspondence.

Abstract:This article reports on a corpus-based study of the English translation of Wang Anyi's award-winning novel, The Song of Everlasting Sorrow [, Chang Hen Ge] from the perspective of style. Using the keyword and concordance functions of corpus software packages AntConc and ParaConc, this research focuses on how the translator's style reveals itself in the target text (TT) as well as how the style of the source text (ST) is represented in the TT. Findings show that the translators have a preference for contracted negative verb forms and expressions such as "bit" over "little," making the text more colloquial. In general, the rendering of the ST style tends not to be entirely faithful. A distinction between reader-centered and text-centered keywords is made. While the reader-centered ST keywords are, as expected, largely altered, the translation of text-centered ST keywords is also rewritten, contrary to expectations. Presumably, the translators tended to reduce the ambiguity of the ST, resulting in a more explicit TT. The article argues that the translators chose to rewrite the translation to make it more understandable for the target audience since it concerned a work from a source culture very different from the target culture.

Abstract:Each translator’s ideology will be formed differently due to his different time background and social environment, which will have an influence on their translation process. When translating the same work, the translator’s understanding of the original text will be different. Based on Andre Lefevere’s manipulation theory and taking Shakespeare’s Hamlet translations in China as an example, this paper makes a comparative study of the translation styles of Zhu Shenghao and Sun Dayu. The translation styles of the two famous translators are different. The former is more prosaic, while the latter is more poetic. Starting from the translator’s life experience and social background of translation creation, the paper discusses the different influence of ideology, poetics and patronage on the two translator’s translation process through the analysis of specific examples.
