Abstract:We are entering a conceptual age, in which individual attributes are valued through expressing their conception, feeling and creativity in products. As a consequence, there will be an increasing need to individualized products, and this calls for a new generation of design systems for individualized design. Open design is a solution to such a new generation of design systems. Then, it raises a question: at what design stage individuality can be introduced. This paper proposes a porous design framework for individualized design: modular developmental mechanisms used as a criterion to decide if a design stage can be open to individuality, and a flexible design procedure served to meet deferent design tasks. Using this framework, design stages can be classified as “hard” or “soft” design depending on the mechanisms involved in the design process. All design stages involving gene transcription and induction can be classified as “hard” design, while all design stages involving commitment can be classified as “soft” design. “Hard” design can be integrated into standard modules. Individualized design can be essentially achieved through “soft” design. The design procedure depends on the mechanisms available to map the current stage onto the next. Different procedures and examples are discussed to validate the framework.
