Abstract:The environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis posits that in the early stages of economic growth environmental degradation and pollution increase. However, as a nation reaches a certain level of income, measured in per capita terms, the trend reverses. The postulated relationship thus produces an inverted U-shaped curve. The topic has drawn much academic interest in the context of developed and emerging nations. The aim of this paper is to investigate the existence of environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) in case of Tunisia using annual time series data for the period of 1971–2010. The ARDL bounds testing approach to cointegration is applied to test long run relationship in the presence of structural breaks and vector error correction model (VECM) to detect the direction of causality among the variables. The robustness of causality analysis has been tested by applying the innovative accounting approach (IAA). The findings of this paper confirmed long run relationship between economic growth, energy consumption, trade openness and CO2 emissions. The results also indicated the existence of EKC confirmed by the VECM and IAA approaches. The study has significant contribution for policy implications to curtail energy pollutants by implementing environment friendly regulations to sustain economic development in Tunisia.

Abstract:The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) posits that environmental degradation increases at the initial stages, but declines as the economy achieves a certain level of economic growth, measured in per capita income terms. This postulated relation produces an inverted Ushaped curve. The topic has drawn much research attention for both developed and emerging economies. Over the past few decades Bangladesh has been achieving remarkable rates of economic growth. A dense population along with a growing industrial base has raised the specter of a looming environmental crisis. The present study empirically investigates the EKC hypothesis for Bangladesh using data from 1971 to 2010. The Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach to cointegration has been implemented for a long run relation; and the Granger causality within the vector error correction model (VECM) for the short run dynamics. The series are found to be cointegrated. We find that energy consumption is a major contributor to CO2 emissions. Trade openness improves environment, but urbanization worsens it. Economic growth, energy consumption, trade and urbanization Granger cause CO2 emissions. Knowledge of the existence of an EKC relation can help craft appropriate policies to promote economic growth and identify the turning point, and help preserve the environment.

Abstract:This analysis looks at the hypothesis of EKC in the MENA countries. The analytical instrument for this research contribution attempts to measure Kuznets' theory's implementation (1985). The background of the study goal is to examine the link between CO2 emissions and economic factors (renewable energy, FDI, trade). We interpreted the EKC hypothesis as a U-shaped inverted hypothesis, which included a connection between renewable energy, economic growth, and CO2 emissions, among other things. During the timeframe (1990) to (2018), the experimental method assisted by using a panel model for a sample of MENA countries. Empirical results indicate a long-term decline between renewable energies, economic growth, trade openness, and FDI. The long-run cointegrating relationship also shows a link between the rate of CO2 emissions and trade openness.

Abstract:The purpose of the present paper is to empirically investigate whether the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis is validated for Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand over the period of 1971-2014. The estimation techniques employed are the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and the fully modified ordinary least square (FMOLS), and we conduct the Granger causality tests to draw interpretation. We take CO2 emissions as the dependent variable, and those endogenous variables of economic growth, the square of economic growth, energy consumption, trade openness, and foreign direct investment (FDI), together with the structural break dummy (for the ARDL estimation only). The EKC hypothesis is statistically confirmed for Thailand by both the ARDL and FMOLS estimations, but it is not so for Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines. One policy implication is that, regardless of whether the EKC hypothesis is confirmed or not, the four ASEAN countries are required to ensure the compatibility between economic growth and environmental improvement by persistently proposing and implementing effective policies to fight against environmental degradation. Another implication is that, policymakers should consider how to convert their countries from pollution heaven countries to environmentally-friendly ones, correctly evaluating the impact of globalization on economic growth and environmental degradation.

Abstract:Since developing countries experience economic and environmental sustainability challenges, it is desirable digging into the linkages between economic and environmental parameters. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the existence of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) theory (i.e., the inverse U-shape connection between real GDP per capita and per capita carbon dioxide emissions) in the sample of 11 developing countries. By using balanced annual panel data in the period between 1992 and 2014 and two alternative estimation techniques, we explored the potential inverted U-shaped linkage between carbon dioxide emissions and real GDP per capita in the sample of interest. For analysis purposes, Pedroni and Westerlund co-integration techniques are employed. Then, fully modified ordinary least squares, pooled mean group methods are applied for long-run parameter estimations. And, the Dumitrescu-Hurlin causality approach is employed for causal directions. Firstly, this work's findings provide the supportive evidence to the inverse U-shaped linkage in the long-run, indicating that an increase in real GDP per capita and electricity consumption tends to mitigate long-run carbon dioxide emissions in the developing countries, for the whole sample. Secondly, the country-specific findings suggested the presence of EKC theory for Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, the Russian Federation, Thailand, and Turkey. It implicated that these countries are on the path of attaining environmental sustainability in the long-run. However, Mexico, Philippines, Indonesia, and South Africa failed to lend credence to the EKC theory. It manifested that these countries need to design strategies directed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from economic activity and electricity generation through efficiency improvement or promotion of renewables. Finally, bidirectional causal links are observed among all the variables of interest. The findings suggest that country-specific targeted action plans should be implemented to ensure the environmental sustainability in the developing world.

Abstract:This study examines the existence of environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) in the perspective of Pakistan over the period of 1970–2016. For this persistence, the impact of GDP per capita, trade openness, financial development, energy consumption, and foreign direct investment on CO2 emissions is empirically scrutinized within the EKC structure. The study employed the autoregressive distributed lagged (ARDL) bound test to scrutinize the long-run relationship between the variables. For robustness, the study applied the dynamic ordinary least square technique. The Granger causality test is implemented to investigate the causal relationship between the variables for short- and long-run. The experimental results of ARDL bound test method recommend the existence of EKC hypothesis for Pakistan. The causality test outcomes indicate that energy consumption and CO2 emissions have a bidirectional relationship, whereas the other variables unidirectional cause the CO2 emissions. The unidirectional causality from other variables toward CO2 emissions supports the confirmation of the EKC hypothesis as this seems in the countries where the EKC is authenticated. These findings recommend that the regulator authorities need to enlarge investment in different new energy plans that might contribute to the exertions of climate extenuation.

Abstract:In this study, the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) is hypothesized to investigate the relationship between CO2 emission, economic growth, energy consumption, trade liberalization and population density in Pakistan with yearly data from 1971 to 2008. The cointegration analysis using Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach is incorporated. The results support the hypothesis both in short-run and long-run and inverted U-shaped relationship is found between CO2 emission and growth. Interestingly we found trade support the environment positively and population contributes to environmental degradation in Pakistan. The energy consumption and growth are the major explanatory variables which contribute to environmental pollution in Pakistan. Moreover, the time series data analysis is used and the stability of variables in estimated model is also assessed.

Abstract:In this study, annual time-series data from 1972 to 2021 are utilized to evaluate the existence of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) in Bangladesh. The study also takes into consideration a number of other characteristics, including openness to trade, renewable energy sources, and foreign direct investment (FDI). In this work, we have used the ARDL model to analyze the cointegration of the variables using the mixed orders, or I (0) and I (1), of the variables. Zivot–Andrews demonstrate a single structural break across all variables. The ARDL bound test confirms the notion of long-term cointegration between the variables. The relationship between CO 2 emissions and economic performance is inverted U-shaped. Because of the presence of the EKC hypothesis, per capita carbon emissions (PCCE) increase until a certain level of GDP per capita is reached, at which point they begin to fall. Although trade has a negative impact on the environment, the uses of renewable energy and foreign direct investment have a positive impact. The speed of adjustment toward equilibrium of this estimation is 48%. The study concludes that the best way to reduce environmental degradation is to employ renewable energy, and environment-friendly business is required to maintain sustainable development in Bangladesh.

Abstract:The paper is an effort to fill the gap in the energy literature with a comprehensive country study of Pakistan. We investigate the relationship between CO2 emissions, energy consumption, economic growth and trade openness in Pakistan over the period of 1971–2009. Bounds test for cointegration and Granger causality approach are employed for the empirical analysis. The result suggests that there exists a long-run relationship among the variables and the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis is supported. The significant existence of EKC shows the country's effort to condense CO2 emissions and indicates certain achievement of controlling environmental degradation in Pakistan. Furthermore, we find a one-way causal relationship running from economic growth to CO2 emissions. Energy consumption increases CO2 emissions both in the short and long runs. Trade openness reduces CO2 emissions in the long run but it is insignificant in the short run. In addition, the change of CO2 emissions from short run to the long span of time is corrected by about 10% yearly.

Abstract:Sustainability is to attain a better quality of life for a long period of time. Accomplishment of sustainable environment is a major challenge for all economies of the world. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis elucidates the association between economic activity and environmental quality deterioration. Therefore, the broad aim of this study is to explore the validity of the EKC hypothesis using real gross domestic product and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions along with other variables, for 182 countries based on annual time series data. The countries are categorized into four income groups (low, lower-middle, upper-middle, and higher-income countries) according to the World Bank classification. The fully modified ordinary least squares estimator is used for estimation. The empirical results confirm the presence of an EKC (inverted U-shaped relationship) in 11 low-income, 15 lower-middle-income, 34 upper-middle-income, and 24 high-income countries out of 182 countries, while in the remaining countries, the relationship between growth and CO 2 emissions is U-shaped. Additionally, the positive impact of energy use and population growth on CO 2 emissions is consistent with the hypothesis. Therefore, this study concludes that the EKC hypothesis holds true in 84 countries. These findings suggest that governments should prioritize low carbon emissions and green technology to achieve sustainable development.

Abstract:The environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis posits an inverted U-shaped relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation. However, there is no consensus regarding the EKC hypothesis among countries and regions of different income groups. This study revisits the EKC hypothesis by employing cross-correlation analysis to explore the income–CO2 emissions relationship across 158 countries and 44 regions from 1990 to 2020. The empirical method utilizes a dynamic cross-correlation coefficient (CCC) approach, allowing for the assessment of lead-lag dynamics between income and CO2 emissions over time. By categorizing nations into the World Bank's income classifications, we found a heterogeneous EKC pattern highlighting distinct environmental–economic dynamics across different income groups. The findings indicate that high-income countries show a decoupling of economic growth from CO2 emissions; whereas, low-income countries still exhibit a positive correlation between both variables. This underscores the necessity for tailored policy interventions that promote carbon neutrality, while considering each country's unique development stage. Our research contributes to the ongoing issue of sustainable economic development by providing empirical evidence of the different pathways nations follow in balancing growth with environmental preservation.

Abstract:The achievement of economic growth is equally important as environmental sustainability. Economic growth is considered capable of enhancing the overall welfare of society. However, there is a sacrifice stemming from economic growth in the form of negative external impacts. Therefore, the objective of this study is to examine the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis in Indonesia and India. The EKC hypothesis connects economic growth with CO2 emissions. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model is employed to assess both the long-term and short-term impacts of economic growth on CO2 emissions in Indonesia and India. Additionally, the study seeks to comprehend the applicability of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis in these countries over the period of 1965-2021. The research findings indicate that economic growth has a significant impact on CO2 emissions in the short term, but this influence is not sustained in the long term in Indonesia. In contrast, in India, economic growth does not exhibit a significant effect on CO2 emissions in the short term, but it does have a notable impact in the long term. This implies that Indonesia does not align with the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis in the long term, while India is anticipated to adhere to the EKC hypothesis in the future.

Abstract:The environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) explains the dynamics associated with income and environmental quality. This study utilizes bibliometric analysis and data visualization techniques and empirically determines the tendencies and patterns in the EKC literature. Furthermore, the study explains intellectual structure, construct development, evolution, collaborations, and research clusters within the EKC research domain during the last two decades, from 2000 to 2020. The study empirically analyzes 2218 articles and 55,051 references from 328 journals, 4146 authors, 99 countries, and 50 subject categories. The study used co-citation analysis to examined the noticeable research articles, journals and authors’ contribution. Moreover, the co-occurrence analysis examined the prominent countries, institutions and keywords in the concerned literature. Most studies in EKC domain focus on developing regions facing the dual challenge of growth and environmental sustainability. The current initiative categorizes the EKC knowledge domain into major research areas with the help of different clusters namely causality analysis, non-renewable energy, energy consumption, the EKC, and industrial pollution. The study further discusses emerging trends that provide future research fronts and intellectual development within the EKC framework.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of the great challenge of climate change and growing global environmental concerns, this study deals a systematic literature review of research related to Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) from 1991 to 2023, details the background, definition, significance, critiques, theoretical foundations and model specifications of EKC, and summarizes the data, variables, econometric methods and findings used in over 100 EKC studies. This study focuses on EKC studies that examine the relationship between energy consumption, economic growth and environmental degradation, with most of the studies reviewed using global pollutants (carbon emissions) to measure the level of environmental degradation. This study found that EKC still has great research potential, and with the development of energy diversification, energy consumption in EKC studies have been further subdivided into renewable or non-renewable energy consumption; innovative EKC studies in the last few years have favoured the use of novel environmental and economic indicators and econometric method, and have validated the existence of EKC at the sectoral level rather than the national level. Finally, the present study summarizes the development and innovations of EKC and provides suggestions for future research aimed at advancing the development of EKC and environmental management.

Abstract:The present study deals with an empirical investigation between CO2 emissions, energy intensity, economic growth and globalization using annual data over the period of 1970–2010 for Turkish economy. We applied unit root test and cointegration approach in the presence of structural breaks. The direction of causality between the variables is investigated by applying the VECM Granger causality approach. Our results confirmed the existence of cointegration between the series. The empirical evidence reported that energy intensity and economic growth (globalization) increase (condense) CO2 emissions. The results also validated the presence of environmental Kuznets curve (EKC). The causality analysis shows bidirectional causality between economic growth and CO2 emissions. This implies that economic growth can be boosted at the cost of environment.

Abstract:This paper detects the direction of causality among carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, energy consumption, and economic growth in Next 11 countries for the period 1972–2013. Changes in economic, energy, and environmental policies as well as regulatory and technological advancement over time, cause changes in the relationship among the variables. We use a novel approach i.e. time-varying Granger causality and find that economic growth is the cause of CO2 emissions in Bangladesh and Egypt. Economic growth causes energy consumption in the Philippines, Turkey, and Vietnam but the feedback effect exists between energy consumption and economic growth in South Korea. In the cases of Indonesia and Turkey, we find the unidirectional time-varying Granger causality running from economic growth to CO2 emissions thus validates the existence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis, which indicates that economic growth is achievable at the minimal cost of environment. The paper gives new insights for policy makers to attain sustainable economic growth while maintaining long-run environmental quality.

Abstract:Based on a sample of 1974–2016 annual data of Vietnam, we show that the EKC does not exist in the short run but only in the long run. However, the N-shape describes better the long-run income-pollution relationship. This implies that Vietnam can expect a temporary reduction in CO2 emissions at a given stage of economic growth. However, this will be followed by a further increase of CO2 emissions after reaching another income turning point. The Vietnamese government should thus focus on long-term economic and environmental strategies. A robustness check shows that these results are not impacted by the variables' selection.

Abstract:The Saudi economy is driven by the energy sector which mainly derived from petroleum-based resources. Besides export, the Kingdom’s consumption of this resource showed a significant increase which linearly promoting CO2 emission increment. Therefore, it is essential to model the Kingdom’s energy consumption to estimate the profile of her future energy consumption. This work explores modelling and multi-step-ahead predictions for energy use, gross domestic product (GDP), and CO2 emissions in Saudi Arabia using previous data (1980–2018). The dynamic interrelationship of the variable’s nexus was tested using the Granger causality and cointegration method in the short-run and long-run. In the long-run, the models reveal an inverted U-shape relation between CO2 emissions and GDP, validating Environmental Kuznets curve. When energy consumption is increased by 1%, there will be an increase in CO2 emissions by 0.592% at constant GDP, and when GDP is increased by 1%, there will be an increase in CO2 emissions by 0.282% at constant energy used. CO2 emissions appear to be both energy consumption and income elastic in Saudi Arabia in the long-run equilibrium. Granger causality based on vector error correction method reveals unidirectional causality from income to CO2 emissions, and bidirectional causality from CO2 emissions to energy consumption and vice versa in the short-run. In the long-run, bidirectional causality from income to CO2 emissions and vice versa and unidirectional causality from the used energy to CO2 emissions were observed. Also, there is a bidirectional causality from GDP to energy used and vice versa in the short-run, meaning that GDP and energy consumption are interdependent. Saudi Arabia needs to increase energy infrastructure investments and increase energy efficiency by implementing energy management policies, reducing environmental pollution, and preventing the negative effect on economic growth.Graphical abstract

For this purpose, two empirical models are examined. For both models, the relationship between per capita income and per capita CO2 emissions and the relationship among per capita income, per capita energy use, and per capita CO2 emissions are analyzed respectively between 1980 and 2010, using the panel data estimation techniques with the application of Driscoll-Kraay Standard Errors. Yet, for the first model, data are analyzed for 26 OECD countries with high income levels, while for the second model, data are examined for 52 emerging countries. The results of both models show that N-shape and an inverted N-shape relationship for cubic functional form are observed. Thus, the results do not support the EKC hypothesis, which implies that environmental degradation cannot be solved automatically by economic growth.
