Abstract:This forward‐looking perspective highlights the transformative and burgeoning potential of cloud laboratory technology. It then assesses the technology's current and anticipated challenges, while scrutinizing its applicability to academic research. The article also provides essential guidance for researchers eager to delve into this innovative technology. The "cloud lab," an automated laboratory that allows researchers to program and conduct physical experiments remotely, represents a paradigm shift in scientific practice. This shift from wet‐lab research as a primarily manual enterprise to one more akin to programming bears incredible promise by democratizing a completely new level of automation and its advantages to the scientific community. Moreover, they provide a foundation on which automated science driven by artificial intelligence (A.I.) can be built upon and thereby resolve limitations in scope and accessibility that current systems face. With a focus on DNA nanotechnology, the authors have had the opportunity to explore and apply the cloud lab to active research. This perspective delves into the future potential of cloud labs in accelerating scientific research and broadening access to automation. The challenges associated with the technology in its current state are further explored, including difficulties in experimental troubleshooting, the limited applicability of its parallelization in an academic setting, as well as the potential reduction in experimental flexibility associated with the approach.

Although their diverse skills are celebrated and needed to understand the immense complexity of life, being a multidisciplinary researcher can pose unique challenges. We asked multidisciplinary researchers and the director of an institute that fosters multidisciplinary research for their thoughts on what they see as the challenges or obstacles that multidisciplinary scientists can often face.

Identifying emerging topics in science and technology

Abstract:The identification of emerging topics is of current interest to decision makers in both government and industry. Although many case studies present retrospective analyses of emerging topics, few studies actually nominate emerging topics for consideration by decision makers. We present a novel approach to identifying emerging topics in science and technology. Two large scale models of the scientific literature, one based on direct citation, and the other based on co-citation, are combined to nominate emerging topics using a difference function that rewards clusters that are new and growing rapidly. The top 25 emergent topics are identified for each year 2007 through 2010. These topics are classified and characterized in various ways in order to understand the motive forces behind their emergence, whether scientific discovery, technological innovation, or exogenous events. Topics are evaluated by searching for recent major awards associated with the topic or its key researchers. The evidence presented suggests that the methodology nominates a viable list of emerging topics suitable for inspection by decision makers.

Abstract:Microfluidic circuits are characterized by fluidic channels and chambers with a linear dimension on the order of tens to hundreds of micrometers. Components of this size enable lab-on-a-chip technology that has much promise, for example, in the development of point-of-care diagnostics. Micro-scale fluidic circuits also yield practical, physical, and technological advantages for studying biological systems, enhancing the ability of researchers to make more precise quantitative measurements. Microfluidic technology has thus become a powerful tool in the life science research laboratory over the past decade. Here we focus on chip-in-a-lab applications of microfluidics and survey some examples of how small fluidic components have provided researchers with new tools for life science research.

Abstract:Abstract With the rapid development of biotechnologies and deep improvement of knowledge, “Discovery” is the initial period and source of innovation of clinical and translational medicine. The international journal of Clinical and Translational Discovery serves to highlight unknown or unclear aspects of clinical and translational medicine‐associated knowledge, technologies, mechanisms, and therapies (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/27680622). The Discovery aims to define the interaction between genes, proteins, and cells, and explore molecular mechanisms of intercommunication and inter‐regulation. More discoveries of technologies and equipment are expected to improve method sensitivity, specificity, stability, analysis, and clinical significance. The first priority of Clinical and Translational Discovery is to turn gene‐, protein‐, drug‐, cell‐, and interaction‐based discoveries into health advancements.
