Abstract:The USB2.0 supports the high-speed signaling at 480 Mbps. It can meet the needs of image and voice signal transmitting. In this paper, after demonstration of the characters and functions of high speed digital circuit of USB2.0 link layer, a novel design and implementation method of data recovery circuits, which is based on all digital phase-looked loop (ADPLL), for the full-speed mode, as well as a new approach of parallel implementation of the encode/decode module in high-speed mode were proposed. The simulation results indicated that the circuit has reached 480MHz. A FPGA hardware simulation system was developed, in which the functions of link layer was verified.

Abstract:Future inter- and intra-ULSI interconnect systems demand extremely high data rates (up to 100 Gbps/pin or 20-Tbps aggregate) as well as bidirectional multiI/O concurrent service, re-configurable computing/processing architecture, and total compatibility with mainstream silicon system-on-chip and system-in-package technologies. In this paper, we review recent advances in interconnect schemes that promise to meet all of the above system requirements. Unlike traditional wired interconnects based solely on time-division multiple access for data transmission, these new interconnect schemes facilitate the use of additional multiple access techniques including code-division multiple access and frequency-division multiple access to greatly increase bandwidth and channel concurrency as well as to reduce channel latency. The physical transmission line is no longer limited to a direct-coupled metal wire. Rather, it can be accomplished via either wired or wireless mediums through capacitor couplers that reduce the baseband noise and dc power consumption while simplifying the fabrication process by eliminating vertical metal studs needed in three-dimensional ICs. These new advances in interconnect schemes would fundamentally alter the paradigm of ULSI data communications and enable the design of next-generation computing/processing systems.

Abstract:Considering the increasing use of information technology with established standards, such as TCP/IP and XML in modern industrial automation, we present a high cost performance solution with FPGA (field programmable gate array) implementation of a novel reliable real-time data transfer system based on EPA (Ethernet for plant automation) protocol and IEEE 1588 standard. This combination can provide more predictable and real-time communication between automation equipments and precise synchronization between devices. The designed EPA system has been verified on Xilinx Spartan3 XC3S1500 and it consumed 75% of the total slices. The experimental results show that the novel industrial control system achieves high synchronization precision and provides a 1.59-μs standard deviation between the master device and the slave ones. Such a real-time data transfer system is an excellent candidate for automation equipments which require precise synchronization based on Ethernet at a comparatively low price.

Abstract:An optimum design of Decision Feedback Equalizer (DFE) used in Ethernet is presented. This paper proposes two improving measures for physical implementation-the hybrid form and the coefficient updating unit sharing. According to the results of synthesis using SMIC, 0.18 mu m CMOS process, the speed, area and power consumption of the improved DFE is optimized by 16%, 36% and 39% compared with the transposed form implementation.

Abstract:Driven by technology advances and economic forces, data centers are being built around the world to serve as the infrastructures for big data analysis services (e.g., GFS, Map-reduce, and Dryad), Internet-based applications (e.g., web search, e-commerce, and online social networking) and cloud computing services (e.g., Amazon EC2, Microsoft Windows Azure, and Google App Engine). Typically, a data center may contain thousands, tens of thousands or even millions of servers with significant inter-node bandwidth requirement between them. How to design efficient and sustainable data center network architectures, and how to manage/configure the networks are two fundamental challenges for data center networking (DCN) research, which form the basis of this Ph.D. dissertation work. Our research focuses on designing efficient DCN from both the architecture perspective and the management perspective. This dissertation is mainly composed of two key components called OSA and DAC. Specifically, OSA is a novel optical switching architecture for data center networks. At its core, by exploiting runtime reconfigurable optical devices, OSA flexibly adapts its topology and link capacities to various traffic patterns, thus achieving high network bisection bandwidth. The key idea we hope to deliver via OSA is that: a thin but flexible architecture, instead of static fat ones, can better support data center networking in a simple, cost-effective and sustainable way. On the other hand, DAC is a management system that can perform address autoconfiguration for both OSA network and other generic data center networks. DAC is motivated by the key observation that data center networks encode locality and topology information into their server and switch addresses for performance, reliability and routing purposes, making the traditional address autoconfiguration protocols, like DHCP, not applicable in the new data center environment. The core of DAC is to reduce the data center address autoconfiguration problem to the graph isomorphism (GI) problem and solve it efficiently by leveraging the data center network topology characteristics. Our designs have been evaluated and validated via extensive analysis, simulations and implementations. Particularly, we have prototyped OSA using the real optical devices and implemented DAC as an application over the Windows network stack.
A Novel Network Coded Parallel Transmission Framework for High-Speed Ethernet

Abstract:Parallel transmission, as defined in high-speed Ethernet standards, enables to use less expensive optoelectronics and offers backwards compatibility with legacy Optical Transport Network (OTN) infrastructure. However, optimal parallel transmission does not scale to large networks, as it requires computationally expensive multipath routing algorithms to minimize differential delay, and thus the required buffer size, optimize traffic splitting ratio, and ensure frame synchronization. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for high-speed Ethernet, which we refer to as network coded parallel transmission, capable of effective buffer management and frame synchronization without the need for complex multipath algorithms in the OTN layer. We show that using network coding can reduce the delay caused by packet reordering at the receiver, thus requiring a smaller overall buffer size, while improving the network throughput. We design the framework in full compliance with high-speed Ethernet standards specified in IEEE802.3ba and present solutions for network encoding, data structure of coded parallel transmission, buffer management and decoding at the receiver side. The proposed network coded parallel transmission framework is simple to implement and represents a potential major breakthrough in the system design of future high-speed Ethernet.

Abstract:Due to its low cost and packet data efficiency, Ethernet has been one of the most influential technologies for Local Area Networks (LAN). Moreover, the 10-Gigabit Ethernet has begun to move Ethernet from the LAN out to encompass the metro area network. The technology features, protocol architecture and the frame format are introduced. In order to realize the logical boundary between the physical layer and the link layer, the protocol of SPI (System Packet Interface) level4 is adopted. A method of realizing the SPI interface of 10-Gigabit Ethernet is put forward and the function block diagram is presented. In order to reduce the power waste of the chip, the parallel algorithm is chosen in the design.

Abstract:This paper deals with a high-speed in-line packet transceiver structure design for the 10 Gb/s Ethernet .By adopting a shared and distributed two-stage buffering mechanism ,the high-speed packet transfer is achieved real-time . The high-efficient scheduling to the changeable length packets is realized by improving hardware implementation of a scheduling algorithm .The packet transceiver is modeled with the aid of systemC at transaction level .By simulating and optimizing the number of the distributed FIFO buffers ,the packet loss rate drop to zero . The design is implemented and simulated at RTL level .To verify the design ,it is used in a 10 Gb/s in-line network security processor and simulated .The simulation shows that the system can achieve 10 .06 Gb/s throughput at the clock rate 250 M Hz without packets loss ,this verified the performance of the design .The design can be used in the next generation 40/100 Gb/s Ethernet to protect the information security through configure the number of the distributed FIFO buffers .

Abstract:With the advancements in microelectronics, interest in electromagnetic interference and compatibility in high-speed circuits has greatly increased in the engineering community, and applications of computational electromagnetics to electromagnetic interference and compatibility (EMI/EMC) engineering become an emerging technology. Termination, via, and crosstalk on interconnection lines will raise EMI problems in high-speed circuits and will therefore require more attention during the design phase for signal integrity. This paper presents signal propagation effect analysis on high-speed interconnection lines, between different parts, with the finite-difference time-domain method. The mechanisms and effectiveness of control measures are examined, which could be applied to high-speed circuit design.

Abstract:Development of Data Center based computing technology require energy efficient high-speed transmission links. This leads to optical amplification-free intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) systems with low complexity equalization compliant with IEEE standardized electrical interfaces. Switching from on-off keying to multi-level pulse amplitude modulation would allow to reduce lane count for next generation Ethernet interfaces. We characterize 106.25 Gbaud on-off keying, 4-level and 6-level pulse amplitude modulation links using two integrated transmitters: O-band directly modulated laser and C-band externally modulated laser. Simple feed forward or decision feedback equalizer is used. We demonstrate 106.25 Gbaud on-off keying links operating without forward error correction for both transmitters. We also show 106.25 Gbaud 4-level and 6-level pulse amplitude modulation links with performance below 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error threshold of 4.5 x 10(-3). Furthermore, for EML-based transmitter we achieve 106.25 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation performance below KP-FEC threshold of 2.2 x 10(-4). That shows that we can use optics to support (2x)100 Gbps Ethernet on single lambda at expense of simple forward error correction.

Abstract:In this paper, the design and applications of high-speed interconnect transceivers are presented. Serial interconnect transceivers have been widely adopted for its high data transfer rate, low cost, good noise immunity and low EMI. Signal SNR can be severely degraded by transmission channel. Channel modeling and analysis are very critical in high-speed serial transceiver design. Effects due to channel impairments and tradeoffs among different equalization techniques are discussed in the paper. Implementation examples of key building blocks for high-speed serial transceiver in deep sub-micron CMOS logic process are also introduced.

Abstract:Fibre Channel, a new interconnect technology for high-performance computer peripherals and storage devices, has been developed and widely used in the field of large-volume optical storage systems. This paper presents an approach of high-speed sustained data transmission system based on Fibre Channel, in which real-time requirement and low-latency are two key points. This system can transfer high-speed data stream from the source to the host over Fibre Channel. The hardware structure and software design are given in this paper. Furthermore the improvement of capability and reliability of large-volume optical storage system using Fibre Channel is put forward.

Abstract:With the development of information technology, there is an increasing demand for high data transmission speed and reliability. Especially in scenarios such as Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), conventional Ethernet cannot meet the requirements of packet loss-free service. In order to provide reliable Ethernet transmission, additional link layer control mechanism for 100G Ethernet is introduced in this paper, and is implemented with coarse-grained reconfigurable array (CGRA). The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method realizes the link layer reliable transmission of Ethernet packets, and has the advantages in terms of processing speed and flexibility.

Abstract:Gigabit Ethernet over SDH/SONET is the research and development hotspot for communications. This paper presents a scheme of single chip solving dual gigabit Ethernet over 2.5G SDH/SONET, which can flexibly allocate transmission bandwidth for each gigabit Ethernet according to users' demand. We give a new system structure to implement VC4 virtual concatenation and detail flow control operation in the chip design. Taking into account the self-similarity of Ethernet traffic, we construct an M/D/1 queuing model. Based on this model, the influence of FIFO capacity on loss probability of packets and flow control on network throughput are analyzed. The results show the design has good performance. In addition, the application of the chip is introduced.
