Abstract:Integrated optical signal processors have been identified as a powerful engine for optical processing of microwave signals. They enable wideband and stable signal processing operations on miniaturized chips with ultimate control precision. As a promising application, such processors enables photonic implementations of reconfigurable radio frequency (RF) filters with wide design flexibility, large bandwidth, and high-frequency selectivity. This is a key technology for photonic-assisted RF front ends that opens a path to overcoming the bandwidth limitation of current digital electronics. Here, the recent progress of integrated optical signal processors for implementing such RF filters is reviewed. We highlight the use of a low-loss, high-index-contrast stoichiometric silicon nitride waveguide which promises to serve as a practical material platform for realizing high-performance optical signal processors and points toward photonic RF filters with digital signal processing (DSP)-level flexibility, hundreds- GHz bandwidth, MHz-band frequency selectivity, and full system integration on a chip scale.

Abstract:Chip-scale integrated optical signal processors promise to support a multitude of signal processing functions with bandwidths beyond the limit of microelectronics. Previous research has made great contributions in terms of demonstrating processing functions and device building blocks. Currently, there is a significant interest in providing functional reconfigurability, to match a key advantage of programmable microelectronic processors. To advance this concept, in this work, we experimentally demonstrate a photonic integrated circuit as an optical signal processor with an unprecedented combination of two key features: reconfigurability and terahertz bandwidth. These features enable a variety of processing functions on picosecond optical pulses using a single device. In the experiment, we successfully verified clock rate multiplication, arbitrary waveform generation, discretely and continuously tunable delays, multi-path combining and bit-pattern recognition for 1.2-ps-duration optical pulses at 1550 nm. These results and selected head-to-head comparisons with commercially available devices show our device to be a flexible integrated platform for ultrahigh-bandwidth optical signal processing and point toward a wide range of applications for telecommunications and beyond.

Abstract:Integrated photonics, because of its intrinsic high speed, large bandwidth and unlimited parallelism, is critical in the drive to ease the increasing data traffic. Its technological enabler is high-precision lithography, which allows for the fabrication of high-resolution photonic structures. Here, in complete contrast to the state of the art, where photonic functions are predefined by lithographically modulating the real index, we report a lithography-free paradigm for an integrated photonic processor, targeting dynamic control of spatial-temporal modulations of the imaginary index on an active semiconductor platform, without the need for lithography. We demonstrate an imaginary-index-driven methodology to tailor optical-gain distributions to rationally execute prescribed optical responses and configure desired photonic functionality to route and switch optical signals. Leveraging its real-time reconfigurability, we realize photonic neural networks with extraordinary flexibility, performing in situ training of vowel recognition with high accuracy. The programmability and multifunctionality intrinsically arising from the lithography-free characteristics can lead to a new paradigm for integrated photonic signal processing to conduct and reconfigure complex computation algorithms, accelerating the information-processing speed to achieve long-term performance requirements.

Abstract:A simple optical threshold operation is proposed. It is implemented with the use of the PROM device, because of the photoconductivity and the Pockels effect of the BSO crystal. Applications in optical logic and morphology are proposed also, and a simple optical experiment is used for demonstration. Abstract:Conventional electronic processors, which are the mainstream and almost invincible hardware for computation, are approaching their limits in both computational power and energy efficiency, especially in large-scale matrix computation. By combining electronic, photonic, and optoelectronic devices and circuits together, silicon-based optoelectronic matrix computation has been demonstrating great capabilities and feasibilities. Matrix computation is one of the few general-purpose computations that have the potential to exceed the computation performance of digital logic circuits in energy efficiency, computational power, and latency. Moreover, electronic processors also suffer from the tremendous energy consumption of the digital transceiver circuits during high-capacity data interconnections. We review the recent progress in photonic matrix computation, including matrix-vector multiplication, convolution, and multiply–accumulate operations in artificial neural networks, quantum information processing, combinatorial optimization, and compressed sensing, with particular attention paid to energy consumption. We also summarize the advantages of silicon-based optoelectronic matrix computation in data interconnections and photonic-electronic integration over conventional optical computing processors. Looking toward the future of silicon-based optoelectronic matrix computations, we believe that silicon-based optoelectronics is a promising and comprehensive platform for disruptively improving general-purpose matrix computation performance in the post-Moore’s law era.

Abstract:An optoelectronic morphological processor for industrial on-line inspection is presented in this paper. The principle of the processor is based on the morphological hit-miss transform. By using an extensive complementary encoding method, which combines the foreground and background of an image into a whole, the hit-miss transform, which usually needs three steps to perform, can be implemented in only one step. The optical implementation hardware is based on an incoherent optical correlator due to its compactness in structure and immunity to coherent noise. The experimental results are given.

Abstract:A highly digital optical phase-locked loop (OPLL) is designed and implemented to generate phase-coherent lasers in quantum optics. All the controlling circuit in this OPLL are implemented in a single field programmable gate array (FPGA) chip. Pipeline and parallelism technology have been adapted in PID controller. Especially, an equivalent 3.5 GHz high speed clock and twisted ring counter have been integrated in the most crucial part. This OPLL has the narrow beat note line width below 1 Hz, residual mean-square phase error of 0.05 rad2 and transition time of 100 μs under 10 MHz frequency step.

Abstract:Programmable linear optical processors (LOPs) can have widespread applications in computing and information processing due to their capabilities of implementing reconfigurable on-chip linear transformations. A conventional LOP that uses a mesh of Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) requires 2N+3 stages of phase shifters for N×N matrices. However, it is beneficial to reduce the number of phase-shifter stages to realize a more compact and lower-loss LOP, especially when long and lossy electro-optic phase shifters are used. In this work, we propose a structure for LOPs that can implement arbitrary matrices as long as they can be realized by previous MZI-based schemes. Through numerical analysis, we further show that the number of phase-shifter stages in the proposed structure can be reduced to N+2 and N+3 for a large number of random dense matrices and sparse matrices, respectively. Abstract:Chip-scale programmable optical signal processors are often used to flexibly manipulate the optical signals for satisfying the demands in various applications, such as lidar, radar, and artificial intelligence. Silicon photonics has unique advant-ages of ultra-high integration density as well as CMOS compatibility, and thus makes it possible to develop large-scale programmable optical signal processors. The challenge is the high silicon waveguides propagation losses and the high calibration complexity for all tuning elements due to the random phase errors. In this paper, we propose and demon-strate a programmable silicon photonic processor for the first time by introducing low-loss multimode photonic wave-guide spirals and low-random-phase-error Mach-Zehnder switches. The present chip-scale programmable silicon photonic processor comprises a 1×4 variable power splitter based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder couplers (MZCs), four Ge/Si photodetectors, four channels of thermally-tunable optical delaylines. Each channel consists of a continuously-tun-ing phase shifter based on a waveguide spiral with a micro-heater and a digitally-tuning delayline realized with cascaded waveguide-spiral delaylines and MZSs for 5.68 ps time-delay step. Particularly, these waveguide spirals used here are designed to be as wide as 2 μm, enabling an ultralow propagation loss of 0.28 dB/cm. Meanwhile, these MZCs and MZ-Ss are designed with 2-μm-wide arm waveguides, and thus the random phase errors in the MZC/MZS arms are negli-gible, in which case the calibration for these MZSs/MZCs becomes easy and furthermore the power consumption for compensating the phase errors can be reduced greatly. Finally, this programmable silicon photonic processor is demon-strated successfully to verify a number of distinctively different functionalities, including tunable time-delay, microwave photonic beamforming, arbitrary optical signal filtering, and arbitrary waveform generation.

Abstract:Optoelectronic logic gates (OELGs) are promising building blocks for next-generation logic circuits and potential applications in light detection and ranging, machine vision and real-time video analysis. On-chip OELGs operating at telecom wavelengths are highly desirable for integration with the growing possibilities offered by silicon-based optoelectronics. However, at present operations are limited to linear logic functions in the ultraviolet or visible range and high-performance OELGs for multiple logic functions are lacking. Here we integrate up to three silicon waveguides with black phosphorus for optoelectronic logic operations at 1.55 μm. We demonstrate linear (AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR) and nonlinear (XOR and XNOR) OELGs by programming optical inputs into the waveguides and reading out electronic signals. The devices exhibit a responsivity as high as 0.35 A W−1 and a 3 dB bandwidth of 230 MHz. The combination of a photovoltaic OR gate and a voltage-switchable AND gate enables two-layer composite logic computing in the form (A + B)C. We also demonstrate symbol recognition, edge extraction, image fusion and encryption/decryption performed by these OELGs. This work paves the way for the development of new optoelectronic logic computing circuits.

Abstract:In this work, programmable optical switching integrated chips for 4-bit binary true/inverse/complement optical code conversions (OCCs) are proposed based on fluorinated photopolymers. Fluorinated bis-phenol-A novolac resin (FAR) with low absorption loss and fluorinated polyacrylate (FPA) with high thermal stability are self-synthesized as core and cladding layer, respectively. The basic architecture of operating unit for the photonic chip designed is composed of directional coupler Mach-Zehnder interferometer (DC-MZI) thermo-optic (TO) switching, X-junction, and Y-bunching waveguide structures. The waveguide module by cascading 16 operating units could realize OCCs function through optical transmission matrix. The response time of the 4-bit binary OCCs is measured as about 300 µs. The insertion loss and extinction ratio of the actual chip are obtained as about 10.5 dB and 15.2 dB, respectively. The electric driving power consumption for OCCs is less than 6 mW. The true/inverse/complement OCCs are achieved by the programmable modulation circuit. The proposed technique is suitable for achieving optical digital computing system with high-speed signal processing and low power consumption.

Abstract:An optical self-programming logic processor was proposed in which the dual-rail spatial encoding method is adopted. Based on the polarization modulation of PROM (Poekls Readout Optical Modulator), the real-time spatial encoding module is proposed. This logic processor module is stacked by PROM devices and calcite crystal plates. It is compact, easy to realize and cascadable. The structure of this processor is fixed, and the controlling pattern is changeable only for implementing all the logic operations of two-input binary variables. The relations between the output pattern and the controlling pattern are given.

Abstract:Integrated photonics computing has emerged as a promising approach to overcome the limitations of electronic processors in the post-Moore era, capitalizing on the superiority of photonic systems. However, present integrated photonics computing systems face challenges in achieving high-precision calculations, consequently limiting their potential applications, and their heavy reliance on analog-to-digital (AD) and digital-to-analog (DA) conversion interfaces undermines their performance. Here we propose an innovative photonic computing architecture featuring scalable calculation precision and a novel photonic conversion interface. By leveraging Residue Number System (RNS) theory, the high-precision calculation is decomposed into multiple low-precision modular arithmetic operations executed through optical phase manipulation. Those operations directly interact with the digital system via our proposed optical digital-to-phase converter (ODPC) and phase-to-digital converter (OPDC). Through experimental demonstrations, we showcase a calculation precision of 9 bits and verify the feasibility of the ODPC/OPDC photonic interface. This approach paves the path towards liberating photonic computing from the constraints imposed by limited precision and AD/DA converters.

Abstract:The all-optical/optoelectronic hybrid intelligent computing with high speed and low power consumption characteristics has emerged as a promising solution for the bottleneck of Moore's Law. However, the low deployment flexibility and low integration limit the further development of optical computing systems, and it is urgent to match the new artificial intelligence theory with the physical characteristics of light itself. In this paper, we proposed a reconfigurable computing architecture based on planar optical waveguide, called wave network, which can be used for hardware development of optical switches, optical logic devices or neural networks. Inspired by the neuronal perceptron model, the elements of wave network are analyzed from the point of view of basic pixel units. Wave network has the processing capability of pulse input and time sequence input. To achieve low-power weight mapping, non-volatile materials with CMOS compatiblity characteristics are introduced above the waveguide (etc. phase change materials, multiferroics materials, and resistive switching materials). This hybrid structure provides a large-scale, low-cost, rapid development platform for the new photonic computing paradigm. And the simulation results show that the properties of the waveguide remain stable at different geometric scales and have the potential of scaling down.

Abstract:Integrated optical computing has the potential to enhance the computation abilities in terms of computing speed and power consumption during the post-Moore's law era. As one of the widely investigated approaches, electro-optic logic uses electro-optic switches as the building blocks to achieve complex functions. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a multioperand electro-optic logic gate that contains multiple active regions in a single gate to further increase the versatility of gates. Thus, one gate can be controlled by several electrical inputs simultaneously. The ability of multioperand logic gates is thoroughly explored. The detailed comparison shows that the proposed gate can largely improve the circuit performance in terms of the area, latency, power, and insertion loss. We believe the multioperand logic gate has the potential to contribute to a more compact and power-efficient integrated optical computing system.
