Abstract:Rotationally resolved laser induced fluorescence and stimulated emission pumping Ã(2)A(1)-X̃(2)E spectra, along with pure rotational spectra in the 153-263 GHz region within the E(3/2) component of the ground state in asymmetrically deuterated methoxy radicals CH(2)DO and CHD(2)O have been observed. The combined data set allows for the direct measurement with high precision of the energy separation between the E(1/2) and E(3/2) components of the ground state and the energy separation between the parity stacks in the E(3/2) component of the ground state. The experimentally observed frequencies in both isotopologues are fit to an effective rotational Hamiltonian accounting for rotational and spin-rotational effects arising in a near-prolate asymmetric top molecule with dynamic Jahn-Teller distortion. Isotopic dependencies for the molecular parameters have been successfully implemented to aid the analysis of these very complex spectra. The analysis of the first and second order contributions to the effective values of molecular parameters has been extended to elucidate the physical significance of resulting molecular parameters. Comparisons of measured parameters, e.g., spin-orbit coupling, rotational and spin-rotation constants, are made among the 5 methoxy isotopologues for which data is now available. Comparisons of experimental results, including the derived geometric structure at both the C(3v) conical intersection and at the Jahn-Teller distorted minima, are made with quantum chemistry calculations.

Abstract:Kinetic, spectroscopic, and computational studies of radical C-H arylations highlight the interplay between chemical and physical rate processes in these multiphase reactions. Anomalous concentration dependences observed here may be reconciled by considering the role of phase transfer processes that mediate concentrations in each phase. In addition, understanding interactions through phase boundaries enables their use in optimization of reaction performance.

Jet-cooled spectroscopy of the α-methylbenzyl radical: probing the state-dependent effects of methyl rocking against a radical site

Abstract:The state-dependent spectroscopy of α-methylbenzyl radical (α-MeBz) has been studied under jet-cooled conditions. Two-color resonant two-photon ionization (2C-R2PI), laser-induced fluorescence, and dispersed fluorescence spectra were obtained for the D0-D1 electronic transition of this prototypical resonance-stabilized radical in which the methyl group is immediately adjacent to the primary radical site. Extensive Franck-Condon activity in hindered rotor levels was observed in the excitation spectrum, reflecting a reorientation of the methyl group upon electronic excitation. Dispersed fluorescence spectra from the set of internal rotor levels are combined with the excitation spectrum to obtain a global fit of the barrier heights and angular change of the methyl group in both D0 and D1 states. The best-fit methyl rotor potential in the ground electronic state (D0) is a flat-topped 3-fold potential (V3" = 151 cm(-1), V6" = 34 cm(-1)) while the D1 state has a lower barrier (V3' = 72 cm(-1), V6' = 15 cm(-1)) with Δφ = ± π/3, π, consistent with a reorientation of the methyl group upon electronic excitation. The ground state results are compared with calculations carried out at the DFT B3LYP level of theory using the 6-311+G(d,p) basis set, and a variety of excited state calculations are carried out to compare against experiment. The preferred geometry of the methyl rotor in the ground state is anti, which switches to syn in the D1 state and in the cation. The calculations uncover a subtle combination of effects that contribute to the shift in orientation and change in barrier in the excited state relative to ground state. Steric interaction favors the anti conformation, while hyperconjugation is greater in the syn orientation. The presence of a second excited state close by D1 is postulated to influence the methyl rotor properties. A resonant ion-dip infrared (RIDIR) spectrum in the alkyl and aromatic CH stretch regions was also recorded, probing in a complementary way the state-dependent conformation of α-MeBz. Using a scheme in which infrared depletion occurs between excitation and ionization steps of the 2C-R2PI process, analogous infrared spectra in D1 were also obtained, probing the response of the CH stretch fundamentals to electronic excitation. A reduced-dimension Wilson G-matrix model was implemented to simulate and interpret the observed infrared results. Finally, photoionization efficiency scans were carried out to determine the adiabatic ionization threshold of α-MeBz (IP = 6.835 ± 0.002 eV) and provide thresholds for ionization out of specific internal rotor levels, which report on the methyl rotor barrier in the cation state.
Probing radical-molecule interactions with a second generation energy decomposition analysis of DFT calculations using absolutely localized molecular orbitals

Abstract:Intermolecular interactions between radicals and closed-shell molecules are ubiquitous in chemical processes, ranging from the benchtop to the atmosphere and extraterrestrial space. While energy decomposition analysis (EDA) schemes for closed-shell molecules can be generalized for studying radical-molecule interactions, they face challenges arising from the unique characteristics of the electronic structure of open-shell species. In this work, we introduce additional steps that are necessary for the proper treatment of radical-molecule interactions to our previously developed unrestricted Absolutely Localized Molecular Orbital (uALMO)-EDA based on density functional theory calculations. A "polarize-then-depolarize" (PtD) scheme is used to remove arbitrariness in the definition of the frozen wavefunction, rendering the ALMO-EDA results independent of the orientation of the unpaired electron obtained from isolated fragment calculations. The contribution of radical rehybridization to polarization energies is evaluated. It is also valuable to monitor the wavefunction stability of each intermediate state, as well as their associated spin density profiles, to ensure the EDA results correspond to a desired electronic state. These radical extensions are incorporated into the "vertical" and "adiabatic" variants of uALMO-EDA for studies of energy changes and property shifts upon complexation. The EDA is validated on two model complexes, H2OMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS& x2d9;F and FHMIDLINE HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS& x2d9;OH. It is then applied to several chemically interesting radical-molecule complexes, including the sandwiched and T-shaped benzene dimer radical cation, complexes of pyridine with benzene and naphthalene radical cations, binary and ternary complexes of the hydroxyl radical with water (& x2d9;OH(H2O) and & x2d9;OH(H2O)(2)), and the pre-reactive complexes and transition states in the & x2d9;OH + HCHO and & x2d9;OH + CH3CHO reactions. These examples suggest that this second generation uALMO-EDA is a useful tool for furthering one's understanding of both energetic and property changes associated with radical-molecule interactions.

Abstract:This work is devoted to deriving and implementing analytic second- and third-order energy derivatives with respect to the nuclear coordinates and external electric field within the framework of the hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics method with induced charges and dipoles (QM/DIM). Using these analytic energy derivatives, one can efficiently compute the harmonic vibrational frequencies, infrared (IR) and Raman scattering (RS) spectra of the molecule in the proximity of noble metal clusters/nanoparticles. The validity and accuracy of these analytic implementations are demonstrated by the comparison of results obtained by the finite-difference method and the analytic approaches and by the full QM and QM/DIM calculations. The complexes formed by pyridine and two sizes of gold clusters (Au18 and Au32) at varying intersystem distances of 3, 4, and 5 Å are used as the test systems, and Raman spectra of 4,4'-bipyridine in the proximity of Au2057 and Ag2057 metal nanoparticles (MNP) are calculated by the QM/DIM method and compared with experimental results as well. We find that the QM/DIM model can well reproduce the IR spectra obtained from full QM calculations for all the configurations, while although it properly enhances some of the vibrational modes, it artificially overestimates RS spectral intensities of several modes for the systems with very short intersystem distance. We show that this could be improved, however, by incorporating the hyperpolarizability of the gold metal cluster in the evaluation of RS intensities. Additionally, we address the potential impact of charge migration between the adsorbate and MNPs.

Abstract:To study intermolecular interactions involving radicals at the correlated level, the energy decomposition analysis scheme for second-order Mo̷ller-Plesset perturbation theory based on absolutely localized molecular orbitals (ALMO-MP2-EDA) is generalized to unrestricted and restricted open-shell MP2. The benefit of restricted open-shell MP2 is that it can provide accurate binding energies for radical complexes where density functional theory can be error-prone due to delocalization errors. As a model application, the open-shell ALMO-MP2-EDA is applied to study the first solvation step of halogenated benzene radical cations, where both halogen- and hydrogen-bonded isomers are possible. We determine that the lighter halogens favor the hydrogen-bonded form, while the iodine-substituted species prefers halogen bonding due to larger polarizability and charge transfer at the halogen. As a second application, relevant to the activation of CO2 in photoelectrocatalysis, complexes of CO2-· interacting with both pyridine and imidazole are analyzed with ALMO-MP2-EDA. The results reveal the importance of charge transfer into the π* orbital of the heterocycle in controlling the stability of the carbamate binding mode, which is favored for pyridine but not for imidazole.

Abstract:Organic radicals consisting of light elements exhibit a low spin-orbit coupling and weak hyperfine interactions with a long spin coherence length, which are crucial for future applications in molecular spintronics. However, the synthesis and characterization of these organic radicals have been a formidable challenge due to their chemical instability arising from unpaired electrons. Here, we report a direct imaging of the surface chemical transformation of an organic monoradical synthesized via the monodehydrogenation of a chemically designed precursor. Bond-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy unambiguously resolves various products formed through a complex structural dissociation and rearrangement of organic monoradicals. Density functional theory calculations reveal detailed reaction pathways from the monoradical to different cyclized products. Our study provides unprecedented insights into complex surface reaction mechanisms of organic radical reactions at the single molecule level, which may guide the design of stable organic radicals for future quantum technology applications.

Abstract:Much progress has been achieved in the developments of accurate and efficient algorithms for quantum dynamics calculations in the past two decades. Based on the reliable potential energy surfaces (PESs) constructed with state‐of‐the‐art ab initio calculations, quantum reactive scattering calculations for the atom‐diatom collisions can be performed accurately at the state‐to‐state level. In this review, we described the general strategies of constructing a PES and the Chebyshev real wave packet method briefly, and summarized our recent studies on the PESs and state‐to‐state reaction dynamics for the reactions of the atom N with radicals OH, CH, and C2. Such barrierless complex‐forming reactions are very important for understanding low‐temperature reaction dynamics and still difficult to treat accurately. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The vibrationally resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectra of the (A) over tilde (3)E<->(X) over tilde (3)A(2) system of CH3N radical were obtained experimentally. The dispersed spectra at different vibrationally excited states confirm that the system studied belongs to the CH3N radical. From the vibrational progressions in the excitation spectrum, following vibrational frequencies of the (A) over tilde (3)E state were determined: nu'(1)= 2943 cm(-1), nu'(2) = 1239 cm(-1), nu'(3) = 759 cm(-1), and nu'(5) = 1500 cm(-1). In addition, the lifetimes of the (A) over tilde (3)E state at four vibrational states (nu'(3) = 0, 3, 4, and 6) were measured, which are, respectively 292.8+/-1.2, 203.4+/-1.2, 188.2+/-0.5, and 157.2+/-0.5 ns at a total pressure of 1.7 Torr. Our experiments show that the (A) over tilde A (3)E state is bound at least up to 4800 cm(-1) and is relatively free from photochemistry. (C) 1995 American Institute of Physics.
Theoretical study of very high spin organic π-conjugated polyradicals

Abstract:Different forms of T-conjugated polyarylmethyl systems, such as diradicals, polyradicals, spin clusters, and polymers, were studied with valence bond (VB) calculations within the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) framework. For these systems, the energy gap between the high-spin ground state and the lowest low-spin excited state (Delta EL-H) was computed and found to correlate well with their stability. On the basis of our analysis, medium-sized polyarylmethyl cycles are suggested to be potential key building blocks of very high spin spin clusters and polymers.

Abstract:Diradicals are of high current interest as emerging materials for next generation optoelectronic applications. To tune their excited-state properties it would be greatly beneficial to have a detailed understanding of the wave functions of the different states involved but this endeavour is hampered by formal and practical barriers. To tackle these challenges, we present a formal analysis as well as concrete results on diradical excited states. We start with a detailed investigation of the avail- able states of a two-orbital two-electron model viewed from, both, the valence-bond and molecular orbital perspectives. We highlight the presence of diradical and zwitterionic states and illustrate their connections to the states found in closed-shell molecules. Subsequently, we introduce practi- cal protocols for analysing states from realistic multireference computations applying these to the paraquinodimethane (pQDM) molecule. The analysis reveals four different categories of states – diradical, zwitterionic, HOMO-SOMO as well as biexciton – while also providing insight into their energetics and optical properties. Twisting the CH2 groups allows us to interconvert between the closed and open-shell forms of pQDM illustrating the connection between the states in both forms. More generally, we hope that this work will lay the foundations for a more powerful rational design approach to diradicals for photophysical applications.

Stabilities and Spin Distributions of Benzannulated Benzyl Radicals

Abstract:The effects have been studied of mono- and dibenzannulation of a benzyl radical with hybrid density functional theory (B3LYP) and quadratic configuration interaction theory (QCISD). Bond dissociation energies and enthalpies are reported that were determined at the common level QCISD/6-311G**//B3LYP/6-31G* for the benzylic C-H bonds of toluene 1H, the monobenzannulated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) 1- and 2-methylnaphthalene 2H and 3H, the dibenzannulated PAHs 9-methylanthracene 4H and 9-methylphenanthrene 5H, and the model hydrocarbons 1-phenylpropene 6H and propene 7H. The conformational preferences and the symmetries of 1H-7H and of their corresponding radicals 1-7 have been determined. The analysis of the electron and spin density distributions of radicals 1-7 at the QCI level are reported, and these high-level data are discussed in comparison to results obtained with density functional theory and with an awareness of a general perception shaped by Hückel molecular orbital theory. The results show in a compelling fashion that electron and spin delocalization onto an annulated arene is not the decisive principle for stabilization of the benzyl radicals formed by homolysis of the methylated PAHs C10H7-CH3 and C14H9-CH3, and instead, the analysis of QCI spin density distributions suggests that spin delocalization onto annulated arenes is avoided as much as possible while spin polarization does occur to a significant extent.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate how an algorithm can be formulated to derive the bond polarizabilities from Raman intensities and how it can be extended to the elucidation of the so-called differential bond polarizabilities from the intensity difference, IjR-IjL which shows the variant responses to the right and left circularly polarized excitations, in the Raman optically active (ROA) systems. Both bond polarizabilities and differential bond polarizabilities are helpful for the interpretation of ROA spectra. We examined the systems of (+)-(R)-methyloxirane and l-alanine using this approach. There is evidence that the asymmetry of differential bond polarizabilities is rather complete in the sense that they are of opposite signs on the two sides along the methine C–H bond of which the disturbed charge density is the largest in Raman excitation. The physical implication is the opposite orientations of the vibrationally induced magnetic moments on the two opposite sides along the methine C–H bond.
Absolute Quantification of Pure Free Radical Reagents by Combination of the Effective Magnetic Moment Method and Quantitative Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Method

Abstract:An absolute quantitative analysis of free radicals by combining the effective magnetic moment method and the quantitative electron paramagnetic resonance [qEPR] method is proposed. This combined method utilizes the advantages of both the analytical methods and compensates for their disadvantages. In the effective magnetic moment method, the magnetic moment under a constant magnetic field is measured accurately using a superconducting quantum interference device. The qEPR method compares a "primary standard sample" and "secondary standard sample". The effective magnetic moment method was used to determine the purity of the primary standard sample. The qEPR method realizes a simple purity analysis of free-radical reagents with traceability to the International System of Units (SI). The purity of the free radicals by the qEPR method for pure 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl benzoate [4HTB], 1-oxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-hydroxypiperidine [TEMPOL], and di(phenyl)-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)iminoazanium [DPPH] reagents was obtained with a relative expanded uncertainty of 0.7% for 4HTB to 1.5% for the DPPH. These small uncertainties were almost equal to those of the purity of the primary standard samples and were achieved by adopting in-plane positioning of the measured sample perpendicular to the cylindrical axis of the sample space of the superconducting quantum interference device. Some purity values of the free radicals for these reagents differed from those stated by the manufacturers. This combined method enables short-time quality control of pure radical reagents, instead of quality control by separation analytical methods or titrations.

Abstract:Two stable triarylmethyl radicals with one or two anthryl substitutions are synthesized in gram scale, and are isolated in the crystalline state. Detailed structural elucidation with X-ray crystallographic analysis and DFT calculations revealed that the twisted structure is more energetically favorable than the folded structure, consequently, the spin density is mainly localized at the methyl carbon. The spin distribution leads to unique physical properties, making them promising open-shell organic materials.

Abstract:The absorption spectra and the kinetics of the self-reactions of small organic peroxyl radicals (RO2, with R = CH3, C2H5 and C3H7) have been investigated in aqueous solution. Laser-based radical generation and time-resolved broadband-diode array UV spectroscopy in a flow system were applied in this study. Absolute decadic absorption coefficients for the three radicals are given in intervals of 2 nm and the results of a study of the temperature dependence of their recombination reactions are presented.

Abstract:The accurate calculation of nitrogen hyperfine coupling constants (A(N) value) for different N-centred radicals is still a challenge. Since the different rehybridization of hybrid orbitals could be regarded as the main discrepancy between nitrogen centered radicals with the presence (LP) and absence (NLP) of lone pair of electrons, the spin polarization contribution to A(N) value arising from valence orbitals (SOP effect) are more important than spin polarization effect (SP) for NLP radicals. Considering this effect, 159 nitrogen centered radicals have been calculated using the B3LYP density functional with different Pople basis sets. Compared with current methods using same basis set, for 52 nitrogen radicals with lone electron pair (such as Aniline center dot, C4H8N center dot, etc.) and dominant SP effect, comparable results to literature was got by B3LYP level with 6-31 + + G(3d,3p) basis set, however, for 122 nitrogen radicals without lone electron pair (such as DMPO/center dot OH, C4H8NW+center dot, etc.), better computational accuracy (RMS = 0.118) was achieved by B3LYP level with 6-31 + + G basis set and IEFPCM solvent model which can reflect the significant SOP effect in this kind of radicals.
