Abstract:Based on the theory of transaction costs/transaction benefits bilateral dynamic analysis,a process model of strategic purchasing is developed,which is redefined as a process comprised of four aspects,namely,replacement of firms by market,optimization of network nodes,solidification of network linkage,integration of network capability.The mechanism of strategic purchasing under various conditions is described.Under buyer's dominance,purchasing the capability of high strategic contribution can be realized through simple linkage network;while the purchasing the capability of lower strategic contribution can be realized through parallel linkage network;Under supplier's dominance,purchasing the capability of high strategic contribution can be realized through extroverted exploration of network;while purchasing the capability of lower strategic contribution can be realized through divergent alliance.Finally,regarding the current practice in China,the paper discussed the importance of strategic purchasing in build-up of firm's reputation and collaboration as well as the firm's culture,pointing out the opportunities and strategies for Chinese firms to practice the theory.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore how a foreign invested manufacturing company’s (FIMC) components sourcing process evolves in order to improve its supply chain outcomes in the context of China’s processing trade. Design/methodology/approach Grounded in the theory bases of the international sourcing process and supply chain integration, this study utilizes a single-case-study approach with a small- to medium-sized FIMC engaged in China’s processing trade. Findings This study identifies three stages of the components sourcing process: simple assembly stage, components localization stage and supply chain integration stage. In addition, the case study suggests that the type of processing trade evolves from processing with supplied materials to processing with imported materials as the sourcing process proceeds through the three stages and the internal and external environments change. Originality/value To our knowledge, this paper is the first to focus on an FIMC’s components sourcing process in the context of China’s processing trade. It contributes to a better understanding of how FIMCs progress through the components sourcing process and apply different types of processing trade in China to maximize their supply chain outcomes.

Abstract:With the rapid development of Chinese manufacturing industry and economy, there is an increasing emphasis on the Chinese institutional environment. In this study, we examine the impact of the three aspects of institutional pressures – normative, mimetic, and coercive – on the two dimensions of supplier integration – system and process – and their impact in turn on financial performance. We test the relationships with data collected from 617 manufacturers in China. Our results show that normative and mimetic pressures are positively related to both system and process integration; while coercive pressures are only positively related to process integration and not significantly related to system integration. The results also indicate that both system and process integration have a positive impact on financial performance. By developing and testing a theoretical model about institutional pressures, supplier integration, and financial performance in the context of the Chinese manufacturing industry, this study contributes to both the institutional and supply chain management literature, as well as providing a better understanding of Chinese manufacturing practices.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we focus on inventory management in a manufacturing company in China. This study aims to identify the key factors that influence inventory management practices, investigate efficient and effective inventory management approaches, and examine the impact of supplier cooperation on supply chain improvement. A case study approach is used to identify the key factors that influence inventory management in a factory. Efficient and effective inventory management practices are derived from the case study and may provide practical guidance for foreign manufacturers in China. This study provides a valuable tool for identifying the key factors in inventory management which can be applied to similar problems encountered in actual manufactories.

It is found that Chinese high-tech manufacturing sectors grow fast recently with the support of nation's science and technology policies, while those traditional sectors, such as textiles, garments, and ferrous metals, decrease because of the low efficiency.

Abstract:China′s foreign trade and investment policies have appeared more attractive to Western marketers in recent years. China presents an opportunity for huge market potential and rapid growth for American multinational firms. However, Western marketers have only limited knowledge about Chinese purchasing decision making, particularly the supplier selection and evaluation criteria of Chinese purchasing managers. Highlights six key criteria of supplier selection and describes the responses of a sample of Chinese purchasing managers. Segments the respondents into three clusters, based on similarities in their supplier evaluation processes and differentiates these clusters in terms of whether the managers emphasize reliable deliveries, price/cost considerations, or product quality. While these findings are of a preliminary nature, they reveal that service/responsiveness of a supplier is not a high priority as opposed to purchasing managers in Western industrialized countries. As China moves rapidly towards a market economy, many Chinese purchasing managers will require suppliers to improve their responsiveness, given comparable levels of price and quality. An understanding of this transition will help Western marketers to enhance their market positions in China.

Abstract:Manufacturers in China are facing global competition,shortening product life cycle,customized demand,and rapid increase in labor and material costs.Supply chain integration is an effective supply chain management strategy for Chinese manufacturers to gain competitiveness.Current literature on the relationship between supply chain integration and firm performance is not conclusive,and American companies have been the main focus.Our study aims to investigate the relationship between supply chain integration and performance for Chinese manufacturers. This study reviews literature on supply chain integration,and propose a conceptual model to help understand the relationship between supply chain integration and firm performance.Supply chain integration includes supplier integration,internal integration and customer integration.Firm performance consists of operational performance and financial performance.We use our proposed model to investigate operational performance from the perspectives of supplier and customer.Our findings show that supplier integration,internal integration and customer integration have positive effect on the improvement of supplier's operational performance and customer service.In addition,supplier's operational performance and customer service improvement mediate supply chain integration and financial performance. This study adopts the survey method.We send our questionnaire to 400 Chinese manufacturers in 22 different industries and receive 139 valid responses.We perform reliability and validity tests to ensure that all questions used to measure each construct have high reliability and validity.We further use SPSS 16.0 to run multiple linear regression analyses to validate our hypotheses.Our analysis results indicate that supplier integration has positive effect on supplier's operational performance.In addition,internal integration and customer integration have positive effect on customer service improvement.A firm's financial performance is mainly improved by customer service improvement.The mediating test results show that supplier integration,internal integration and customer integration can influence financial performance through supplier's operational performance and customer service improvement.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to provide a case study of a successful corporate group, Yue Yuen Industrial Holdings Limited (abbreviated "Yue Yuen" below), which acquired its competitive advantage through supply chain management (SCM) and supply chain integration (SCI). Focusing on this as a representative example, the paper discusses the features, operations model and performance of SCM and SCI as a useful reference for business, enterprise and academia.Design/methodology/approach - Based on classical works on supply chain management, a detailed eight part questionnaire, on supplier and customer relationship management, was designed. This was completed by Yue Yuen managers.Findings - Through nearly two years of research work, it was found that Yue Yuen's success in supply chain management lies in its large investment in information technology. It was found that a global supply chain strategy should target timeline improvements in product development and procurement to produce optimal effects in terms of cost and quality. Rather than optimizing a single process or segment of the supply chain, a firm should target improvements throughout the entire supply chain.Research limitations/implications - The framework in the case discussed in this paper provides guidance for future research in the field of supply chain management and supply chain integration by focusing on the case of a specific company and industry.Practical Implications - This paper provides some theoretical support and policy implications for the reform and development of China's manufacturing, especially in the footwear industry.Originality/value - This paper highlights the importance of shifting from a "vertical solution" model to a "horizontal solution" model, and stresses that under this new management model, companies can use cooperation to provide customers with a full service supply chain model.

Abstract:The paper analyzes five Finnish case companies to study the sourcing process from China. A framework of a six-stage sourcing process is developed that includes finding and choosing suppliers, making contracts and orders, performing production and quality control, planning logistics, inspecting purchases, and developing supply chain management. Each stage describes the activities from the channels of seeking suppliers to cooperative areas for further development. The case study illustrates the practices of sourcing from China are actually quite similar to the sourcing process in other countries. The study highlights that quality control is the core issue in sourcing from China. Moreover, the difference in understanding sustainable quality affects supplier screening and quality control. Close cooperation on quality control is the key to managing the supply chain to increase competitive advantage through sourcing from China.

Abstract:Although large and medium-sized state-owned enterprises (LMSOEs) play an important role in China's economy, only in the past two to three years have these enterprises started to focus on environmental developments such as green purchasing in their business practices. As part of an investigation of this topic, a survey and site visits to 28 LMSOEs were conducted to investigate the potential for green purchasing in China. This paper is both a review of the investigation's findings and an introduction to the elements of green purchasing among Chinese LMSOEs. It first introduces the importance of green purchasing for LMSOEs as it pertains to the marketing of their products. Then it discusses key elements of green purchasing for LMSOEs, which include: (1) the organisational framework, (2) a model for supplier selection, (3) key factors and criteria affecting supplier selection and (4) the establishment of beneficial buyer-supplier relationships. Last, it analyses the challenges of LMSOEs for green purchasing in the context of the rapidly evolving Chinese economy and summarises the progress that has been made. The paper concludes that Chinese LMSOEs and foreign investment enterprises in China can benefit from green purchasing co-operation if they establish close long-term supplier-buyer relationships.

Abstract:Firms go through different stages in the upgrading process from international purchasing to global sourcing.To make a comprehensive analysis on Chinese firms international purchasing combining with the reality of Chinese firms,we should,in terms of the interest,challenge,and capacity,divided the international purchasing into such four stages as the demand-oriented passive stage,the initiative stage,the strategic stage and the coordinate and integrated stage.At the primary stage,the purpose for the Chinese firms to purchase internationally is not to pursue the low cost but the high quality and technology of supply.The primary interest is the low-level interest that will be easily realized;and at this stage,the main barriers are the hard cost and external barrier.With the firms getting mature in globalized competition,by international purchasing,the Chinese firms are increasingly pursuing the diversified strategic interest;during this process,conflicts between soft cost and internal barrier is getting obvious;the resources picking-up skill is increasingly improved;and the firms are getting more capacities for global sourcing.

Abstract:With diminishing low-cost advantages, the Chinese manufacturing industry is actively engaged in digital transformation under the pressure of global competition. By analysing the gaps between existing technology-adoption theories and digital transformation practices, we developed a theoretical framework of factors influencing artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in enterprises based on the technology-organisation-environment (TOE) framework. Using three case studies of Chinese heavy-manufacturing enterprises, this article explores three important aspects of digital transformation empowered by AI: technological, organisational, and environmental driving factors and we propose an AI business model to clarify the mechanism of AI technological adoption in the manufacturing industry. This study is an in-depth summary and exploration of the digital transformation of China's manufacturing industry. It theoretically supplements related research in the field of AI technology adoption, and more important, provides practical experience in moving toward a digital transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry.

Abstract:The issue of development of China's equipment industry during its transition from world manufacturing base to manufacturing center requires a systematic examination of the conditions and key factors that are supportive of a benign interaction between the two sectors.This paper gives a logically consistent framework for this problem based on the products of evolutionary economics,the theory of firm capabilities and the other studies on innovation. An important finding is that the demand-oriented innovation strategy is available and feasible for China's equipment enterprises to compete in the world value chains.Accordingly,the focus of industry policy needs a shift from the common technology supply and financial aid to market opportunities creation.

Abstract:Originating from the West, project management was introduced into China after the country's economic reforms in the 1980's and has since spread quickly throughout the whole country, particularly in the construction industry. However, despite the wide adoption of project management practices by construction organizations and the growing recognition of the importance of project management as an enabler of organizational success, empirical studies on project management in the context of the Chinese construction industry have been inadequate. This paper presents the results of an empirical study of six Chinese construction organizations in order to come to a more comprehensive and sophisticated understanding of project management practices in the Chinese construction industry. The findings revealed: (1) a good appreciation of the role of projects and project management and satisfaction with current project management practices; (2) 11 key aspects of project management implementation; (3) 12 resultant value and benefits; and (4) five aspects of the main challenges facing the organizations. Meanwhile, variations in project management practices and the resultant organizational value were identified, first between the three owner- and the three contractor-case study organizations, then between the two construction contractor organizations and the one design contractor organization.
