Abstract:A modular synthesis of Ru(II)-NHC-diamine complexes from readily available chiral N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and chiral diamines is disclosed for the first time. The well-defined Ru(II)-NHC-diamine complexes show unique structure and coordination chemistry including an unusual tridentate coordination effect of 1,2-diphenylethylenediamine. The isolated air- and moisture-stable Ru(II)-NHC-diamine complexes act as versatile precatalysts for the asymmetric hydrogenation of isocoumarines, benzothiophene 1,1-dioxides, and ketones. Moreover, on the basis of the identification of reaction intermediates by stoichiometric reactions and NMR experiments, together with the DFT calculations, a possible catalytic cycle was proposed.

Abstract:A new kind of dendronized polymeric chiral BINAP ligands has been synthesized and applied to the Ru-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of simple aryl ketones and 2-arylacrylic acids. These dendronized poly(Ru-BINAP) catalysts exhibited high catalytic activity and enantioselectivity, very similar to those obtained with the corresponding parent Ru(BINAP) and the Ru(BINAP)-cored dendrimers. It was found that the pendant dendrons had a major impact on the solubility and the catalytic properties of the polymeric ligands. These polymeric catalysts could be easily recovered from the reaction solution by using solvent precipitation, and the reused catalyst showed no loss of activity or enantioselectivity.

Abstract:New kind of chiral dendritic BIPHEP ligands have been prepared and their applications in the Ru-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of β-ketoesters were investigated. Ruthenium catalysts containing these dendrimer ligands were effective in the hydrogenation of β-ketoesters. It was found that the size of the dendritic wedges influenced the enantioselectivity significantly.

Abstract:The two asymmetric hydrogenation catalysts, [Ru((S)_BINAP)(OAc)_2] and [Ru((R)_BINAP)(OAc)_2], have been synthesized under the optimal experimental conditions. The asymmetric reduction of tiglic acid is efficiently achieved with 88% yield and 85%e.e.(enantiomeric excess) by using the synthesized catalyst. The study on the activity of catalyst [Ru(BINAP)(OAc)_2] supported on the mesoporous molecular sieve SBA_15 showed that a relatively high yield (59%) and steroselectivity(57% e.e.) were maintained after recycled for three times.

Abstract:With the assistance of hydrogen bonds, the first asymmetric hydrogenation of beta-yanocinnamic esters is developed, affording chiral beta-cyano esters with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee). This novel methodology provides an efficient and concise synthetic route to chiral GABA-derivatives such as (S)-Pregabalin, (R)-Phenibut, (R)-Baclofen. Interestingly, in this system, the catalyst with a single H-bond donor performs better than that with double H-bond donors, which is a novel discovery in the metalorganocatalysis area.

Abstract:Mesoporous core-shell structure Ag@SiO2 nanospheres are constructed to prevent Ag nanoparticles from aggregation during the hydrogenation reaction. The prepared catalyst shows superior catalytic performance for hydrogenation of nitro compounds with 100% conversion and selectivity without any by-products, which also indicates good recycling performance for several times use.

Abstract:A catalytic amount of Hantzsch ester that could be regenerated in situ by Ru complexes under hydrogen gas has been employed in the biomimetic asymmetric hydrogenation of benzoxazinones with up to 99% ee in the presence of chiral phosphoric acid. The use of hydrogen gas as a reductant for the regeneration of Hantzsch esters makes this hydrogenation an ideal atom economic process.

Abstract:The field of asymmetric (transfer) hydrogenation of prochiral olefins has been dominated by noble metal catalysts based on rhodium, ruthenium, and iridium. Herein we report that a simple nickel catalyst is highly active in the transfer hydrogenation using formic acid. Chiral α- and β-amino acid derivatives were obtained in good to excellent enantioselectivity. The key toward success was the use of the strongly donating and sterically demanding bisphosphine Binapine.

Abstract:Asymmetric catalysis is the preferred method for the synthesis of pure chiral molecules in the fine chemical industry. Cellulose has long been sought as a support in enantioselective catalysis. Dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) is produced by the selective oxidation of cellulose and is used to bind 5,5′-diamino Binap by forming a Schiff base. Here, we report the synthesis of modified cellulose-supported Rh as a novel biomass-supported catalyst and the characterization of its morphology, composition, and thermal stability. DAC-BINAP-Rh was a very effective catalyst in the asymmetric hydrogenation of enamides and could be easily recycled. This work provides a novel supported catalyst that broadens the applications of cellulose in asymmetric catalysis.

Abstract:Owing to their distinctive 1,3-dipolar structure, the catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation of nitrones to hydroxylamines has been a formidable and longstanding challenge, characterized by intricate enantiocontrol and susceptibility to N-O bond cleavage. In this study, the asymmetric hydrogenation and transfer hydrogenation of nitrones were accomplished with a tethered TsDPEN-derived cyclopentadienyl rhodium(III) catalyst (TsDPEN: p-toluenesulfonyl-1,2-diphenylethylene-1,2-diamine), the reaction proceeds via a novel 7-membered cyclic transition state, producing chiral hydroxylamines with up to 99% yield and >99% ee. The practical viability of this methodology was underscored by gram-scale catalytic reactions and subsequent transformations. Furthermore, mechanistic investigations and DFT calculations were also conducted to elucidate the origin of enantioselectivity.

Abstract:A robust and stable Ru-Biphosphinobioxazoline catalyst system is discovered for the highly enantioselective hydrogenation of enones to allylic alcohols. A series of acyclic α,β-unsaturated ketones react well affording the desired products in high yields (up to 98%) and enantioselectivities (up to 98%ee). Simple manipulation process and tolerance of water and air make this catalysis more practical and appealing.
