China must have its own unique sustainable energy system

Frontiers of Energy and Power Engineering in China
Abstract:Energy and associated environmental problems are now the central focus of mankind. These problems are extremely serious and urgent, because global climate change will not wait for a long time. The problems should be solved in a limited time-frame of less than 50 years. Human-induced climate change could overshadow all our efforts to cure diseases, reduce poverty, prevent warfare and preserve biodiversity. China, because of its huge population, energy consumption and related environmental pollution have a significant share in global climate change. Furthermore, the percentage of coal, as the most important primary energy in China, will remain more than 60% in the coming 40-50 years. Under this situation, innovative technology, new strategic ideas and new approaches are the key for solving the energy/environment problem in the country. There are no existing examples in the world for copying, therefore, China should take the unavoidable responsibility, and in some sense, to lead the sustainable (or so called “Low Carbon”) energy systems world wide. “Frontiers of Energy and Power Engineering in China” at present is the only English-language academic journal dedicated to energy in China. Our ambition is to develop this journal into a unique platform for reporting the most advanced research on energy science and strategic thinking in the country. Obviously, energy/environment problems could be solved only with system approaches, so the scope of the journal is broadened in comparison with “traditional” frontiers. It covers energy fundamental science, energy technology (power generation, renewables, transport, building energy conservation and integration of different energy systems), energy and environment (pollution control, energy efficiency in narrow and comprehensive sense, climate change, carbon capture, utilization and storage CCS), and energy economics and policy. Since the publication of the first issue of “Frontiers of Energy and Power Engineering in China” two years ago, the journal has been warmly met by domestic and international readers. In order to raise the academic level of the journal, we have invited more famous international scholars and experts to join the editorial board, and decided to shift from selected published articles to original submission in English. We heartily hope our journal will be a new nexus for information exchange in the fields of energy and power engineering.
