Abstract:Ad hoc networks are a new wireless networking paradigm for mobile hosts. Unlike traditional mobile wireless networks, ad hoc networks do not rely on any fixed infrastructure. Instead, hosts rely on each other to keep the network connected. Military tactical and other security-sensitive operations are still the main applications of ad hoc networks, although there is a trend to adopt ad hoc networks for commercial uses due to their unique properties. One main challenge in the design of these networks is their vulnerability to security attacks. In this article, we study the threats on ad hoc network faces and the security goals to be achieved. We identify the new challenges and opportunities posed by this new networking environment and explore new approaches to secure its communication. In particular, we take advantage of the inherent redundancy in ad hoc networks-multiple routes between nodes-to defend routing against denial-of-service attacks. We also use replication and new cryptographic schemes, such as threshold cryptography, to build a highly secure and highly available key management service, which terms the core of our security framework.

Abstract:In mobile Ad hoc networks,routing security has become an important issue due to the self-organize,dynamic topology and wireless surrounding of networks.Of all the current routing protocols,many take into account routing security under the assumption of existing security association while some use the expensive public key mechanism.These protocols cannot deal with attacks efficiently.This paper proposes an efficient and secure routing approach for Ad hoc network,specify its routing process,analyzes its security performance and network performance,and compared it with the existent protocols.The new approach can solve security problems such as fabrication,modification,routing replay attack in mobile Ad hoc networks.And it also considered the resources are constrained in Ad hoc network.

Abstract:Owing to many new characteristics such as central-less control and multi-hop communication,the security situation is more rigorous than that in the traditional Ad hoc network.Especially,when the number of nodes increase,the difficulty of building network,network availability and network security will be influenced badly.After the particular analysis of Sergio Marti's Watchdog and Pathrater arithmetic,intrusion detection system called SuperWatchdog,as the improved solution,was introduced to overcome the weakness of Watchdog.The main feature of the proposed system is its ability to discover malicious nodes which can partition the network by falsely reporting other nodes as misbehaving and then proceeds to protect the network.Simulation results show that our system decrease the overhead greatly,though it does not increase the throughput obviously.

Abstract:Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are a set of mobile nodes which are self-configuring and connected by wireless links automatically as per the defined routing protocol. The absence of a central management agency or a fixed infrastructure is a key feature of MANETs. These nodes communicate with each other by interchange of packets, which for those nodes not in wireless range goes hop by hop. Due to lack of a defined central authority, securitizing the routing process becomes a challenging task thereby leaving MANETs vulnerable to attacks, which results in deterioration in the performance characteristics as well as raises a serious question mark about the reliability of such networks. In this paper we have attempted to present an overview of the routing protocols, the known routing attacks and the proposed countermeasures to these attacks in various works.

Abstract:Mobile ad hoc networking (MANET) is an infrastructureless network composing many hosts moving in arbitrary manner. Due to the unpredictable and dynamic environments, the MANET networks have much more restricted security requirements than the traditional wired-and-static networks. Although a security model based on CA (certification authority) has been implemented to make the security goal achievable, there are still problems can not be avoided, such as the "bottleneck" of CA. Moreover the CA mechanism also violates the robustness of the wireless system. In this paper, we present common security problems related to routing, and discuss contemporary solutions that are seemingly inadequate for protecting the routing in MANET networks. As a result, we deliver a security-policy based on hierarchical routing. It not only provides the robustness of the network and eliminates the "bottleneck" in the system, but also complies with the organization system especially in the army

Abstract:The emergence of the Mobile Ad Hoc Networking (MANET) technology advocates self-organized wireless interconnection of communication devices that would either extend or operate in concert with the wired networking infrastructure or, possibly, evolve to autonomous networks. In either case, the proliferation of MANET-based applications depends on a multitude of factors, with trustworthiness being one of the primary challenges to be met. Despite the existence of well-known security mechanisms, additional vulnerabilities and features pertinent to this new networking paradigm might render such traditional solutions inapplicable. In particular, the absence of a central authorization facility in an open and distributed communication environment is a major challenge, especially due to the need for cooperative network operation. In particular, in MANET, any node may compromise the routing protocol functionality by disrupting the route discovery process. In this paper, we present a route discovery protocol that mitigates the detrimental effects of such malicious behavior, as to provide correct connectivity information. Our protocol guarantees that fabricated, compromised, or replayed route replies would either be rejected or never reach back the querying node. Furthermore, the protocol responsiveness is safeguarded under different types of attacks that exploit the routing protocol itself. The sole requirement of the proposed scheme is the existence of a security association between the node initiating the query and the sought destination. Specifically, no assumption is made regarding the intermediate nodes, which may exhibit arbitrary and malicious behavior. The scheme is robust in the presence of a number of non-colluding nodes, and provides accurate routing information in a timely manner.

Abstract:Wireless Ad Hoc network is vulnerable to attacks due to its open and decentralized properties. This paper proposes a trusted connection based scheme for Ad Hoc network to prevent attacks. A trusted architecture is introduced into the node platform, which consists of two phases, platform identity verification and platform integrity measurement. For a communication requirement of two nodes, the terminal platform identity is firstly authenticated via Direct Anonymous Attestation, and the platform integrity measurement is performed for the nodes passing authentication. The communication is established if the nodes in both sides pass the authentication and measurement. We conduct simulation experiments to analyze the performance of the proposed scheme and verify its security in the attack scenario. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can prevent the malicious nodes from accessing the network and resist the attacks from network.

Abstract:The application of physical layer security in ad hoc networks has attracted considerable academic attention recently. However, the available studies mainly focus on the single-hop and two-hop network scenarios, and the price in terms of degradation of communication quality of service (QoS) caused by improving security is largely uninvestigated. As a step to address these issues, this paper explores the physical layer security-aware routing and performance tradeoffs in a multi-hop ad hoc network. Specifically, for any given end-to-end path we first derive its connection outage probability (COP) and secrecy outage probability (SOP) in closed-form, which serve as the performance metrics of communication QoS and transmission security, respectively. Based on the closed-form expressions, we then study the security-QoS tradeoffs to minimize COP (resp. SOP) conditioned on that SOP (resp. COP) is guaranteed. With the help of analysis of a given path, we further propose the routing algorithms which can achieve the optimal performance tradeoffs for any pair of source and destination nodes in a distributed manner. Finally, simulation and numerical results are presented to validate the efficiency of our theoretical analysis, as well as to illustrate the security-QoS tradeoffs and the routing performance.

Abstract:Mobile ad hoc networks are widely used and it is an important task to route efficiently.But traditional routing algorithms are not fit for mobile ad hoc networks due to their dynamic character and many routing algorithms of mobile ad hoc networks were proposed these years.Main classification standards for routing mechanisms were presented.Then basic routing protocols and routing algorithms for mobile ad hoc network were overviewed.After that,as the latest advance of routing algorithms,the prediction-based models,energy models,position-based models,QoS and security in routing algorithms were deeply researched.In prediction-based routing algorithms,using historical information,proper routes were rapidly chosen based on the prediction of nodes' motion.In energy-aware routing algorithms,the consumption of energy was modeled based on the nodes' information.Then we introduced the special applications of the routing algorithms,including position-based routing algorithms,QoS routing algorithms and security routing algorithms.In position-based routing algorithms,forwarding decisions were made based on the geographical position of a packet's destination.The main idea of QoS routing algorithms was to take bandwidth,delay,energy and battery's life cycle into account while routing.In security routing algorithms,messages were encrypted based on secret keys,hash chains and electronic signatures.Last,more than thirty routing algorithms were compared and researched in the fields of computation overhead,communication overhead,storage overhead,optimal path,critical node and the types of the routing algorithms.The characters and applied areas of these routing algorithms were analyzed and the research trends in this field were proposed.

Abstract:In the mobile ad hoc networks the major role is played by the routing protocols in order to route the data from one mobile node to another mobile node. But in such mobile networks, routing protocols are vulnerable to various kinds of security attacks such as blackhole node attacks. The routing protocols of MANET are unprotected and hence resulted into the network with the malicious mobile nodes in the network. These malicious nodes in the network are basically acts as attacks in the network. In this paper, we modify the existing DSR protocol with the functionality of attacks detection without affecting overall performance of the network. Also, we are considering the various attacks on mobile ad hoc network called blackhole attack, flooding attack and show the comparative analysis of these attacks using network simulator ns-2.

Abstract:MANETs have been widely applied in people's life. Due to the mobility of MANETs and the openness of wireless channels, it is especially important to ensure the security and robustness of MANETs. Network vulnerability analysis can provide constructive solutions to building secure and robust networks. This paper presents a method of assessing the vulnerability and resilience of mobile ad hoc networks based on centrality metrics. Firstly, this method analyzes the mobile ad hoc network from graph theory and models as a weighted graph. Secondly, it chooses key nodes based on the centrality metrics and calculates flow robustness change after the failure of key nodes to evaluate the given network’s vulnerability and resilience. Meanwhile, the paper gives the experimental procedures on NS3 simulation platform and the corresponding result analysis. Effectively assessing the vulnerability and resilience of mobile ad hoc networks is important for node configuration, resource allocation, protection of key nodes as well as network robustness improvement.
