Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to gain insights into the strategies employed by beginning learners of Spanish, German, Chinese and Japanese as Foreign Languages at university level in order to comprehend texts in their target languages. It also investigates possible relationships between strategic behaviour and success in reading comprehension tasks. Strategy use is assessed using qualitative analysis of reported strategic behaviour elicited from participants using open-ended questions, combined and compared with data generated using a modified sub-section of the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning [Oxford, R. 1990. Abstract:This study aimed to examine the strategy use of Brazilian students learning Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) and the factors that might affect the variations in strategy use. The Strategy Inventory for Language Learning was employed as the research instrument, and altogether 120 students in a Confucius Institute in Brazil participated in the questionnaire survey. Statistical analyses of the data revealed that metacognitive and social strategies were the most frequently employed strategies by the participants. No significant differences were observed in the use of either overall or individual strategies by gender, age, or education level. Chinese proficiency level was found to impose main effects on the learners' overall strategy use as well as on the use of memory and cognitive strategies. This study has pedagogical implications for CFL teachers, as findings related to the learners' strategy use and the influencing factors can help CFL teachers tailor their instructions to the learner groups.

Abstract:Abstract The research reported here investigated the effects of contextual factors on Chinese students’ use of language learning strategies in English learning. The study differed from most of the previous studies on learning strategies in that the data were examined within Biggs (1993. What do inventories of students’ learning processes really measure? A theoretical review and clarification. British Journal of Educational Psychology 63. 3–19.) 3P (Presage, Process and Product) model of learning. Using a Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (Oxford, R. L. 1990. Language learning strategies: What every teacher should know . New York: Newbury House Publishers.) and interview, the researchers discovered the disparities in the use of learning strategies in English learning between the students from urban schools and those from rural schools. The former made a more frequent use of the strategies leading to the improvement of communicative competence and active involvement in classroom activities, whereas the latter showed a strong preference for the strategies relevant to the analysis of grammatical rules and linguistic details. An in-depth analysis of the data revealed that the differences in strategy use between the two groups might stem from some social and economic factors and could be linked to three elements in Biggs’ 3P model: value and expectation, teacher competence and teaching facilities. The article concludes by discussing some implications for English as a foreign language (EFL) teaching in Chinese schools and other similar education settings worldwide.

Abstract:English proficiency test is the most widely taken for many purposes. Most of people take TOEFL, IELTS, and global English as learning fields to achieve their learning purposes. However the score for these proficiency tests are low. Consequently, they need to find solution to increase the score, for instance using learning strategies. There are several language strategies can be used to help them to achieve it. This study focuses on identifying which strategies used by language learners for learning IELTS, TOEFL, and global English and the frequency of using the strategies. The study proposes two research questions, first, what are strategies mostly used by the language learners in learning IELTS, TOEFL, and global English? Second, how often do the learning strategies used by the learners? The study is conducted in descriptive statistics, collected the data through SILL questionnaires consist of 35 statements, and includes 27 respondents from Bandung, West Java. This study found that learners used the learning strategies to help them in learning language proficiency, however they used it instability and inconsistency. Overall, to achieve the learning purposes, learners are suggested to trigger themselves to use learning strategies in consistent and regularly.

Abstract:The main purpose of this research is to explore whether there are differences in the use of language learning strategies among learners according to their majors and the language they are studying. The data were collected from students of a college of physical education enrolled in English classes at a university in Seoul. Also, the previous studies that were employed the same questionnaire were analyzed to compare with the results. As a research method, the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) by Oxford (1990) used. The findings revealed that social strategies were the most frequently used, while affective strategies were the least used. On the other hands, the strategies preferred by students majoring in airline service were metacognitive and affective strategies, and the former students majoring in athletes favor memory strategies in Chinese class. Finally, it also suggests the need to develop ways to enhance the effectiveness of English learning by increasing the use of learning strategies.

Abstract:This paper explores whether the CALL-based self-directed vocabulary learning could significantly improve students' strategy use and thereby enhance their self-directed vocabulary learning in comparison with the paper-based version. Subjects for the study were sixty-one freshmen from two classes at a university in China. They were randomly assigned to adopt a newly-developed learning system and a corresponding printed material. Subjects completed pre- and post-questionnaire surveys at the start and end of the study respectively, through which data were collected on students' satisfaction levels with their strategy use. It was ultimately revealed that there were key differences in strategy use between the two groups.

Abstract:Purpose: The goal of the current study is to investigate how English as a second language or English as a foreign language learners use teaching methodologies and to pinpoint any potential risk factors. Theoretical framework: This research investigates whether elements like English language competency, academic success, learner environment, enthusiasm, psychology, etc. may be linked to the usage of study techniques by students who do not speak English as their first language. Methods: The learning strategies that employ the language learners either outside/inside of the language classroom would be crucial for making easiness in language learning, and entertainment as well as more operative. This study indicates that most learners are from low academically deprived backgrounds and have low proficiency in English despite fairly high academic ability. The learners show higher scores for instrumental motivation compared to integrative motivation. Results and conclusions: The findings suggest that the learners display a greater use of indirect strategies compared to direct strategies and suitable efficient as well as social strategies. Finding implications: The findings show an interesting correlation with learning factors, such as a moderate positive correlation of proficiency in English with memory strategies, cognitive strategies, and metacognitive strategies as well as the fairly high correlation among clusters of learning strategies. Uniqueness/value: The learner’s proficiency in English showed moderate positive correlation with three types of learning strategies: memory, cognitive and metacognitive.

Abstract:This study examined the profiles of L2 strategy use and their association with different types of L2 reading achievement. A total of 1491 college students responded to a strategy use questionnaire evaluating the efficiency of strategy use immediately after they took an English reading test. Results of latent profile analysis revealed: 1) there were three profiles of strategy users, namely, low-efficiency, moderate-efficiency, and high-efficiency strategy users; 2) higher strategy use profiles had a higher probability of belonging to higher levels of reading achievers; meanwhile 3) lower-efficiency strategy users displayed to a substantial extent the probability (albeit relatively small) of belonging to higher-level reading achievers and higher-strategy users also had probability of belonging to lower-level reading achievers. The study added value by focusing on the efficiency aspect of strategy use and by providing granular information regarding the uneven membership belongingness of different strategy users across different types of L2 readers.

Abstract:This paper aims at investigating the Chinese language learning strategies employed by university students. Quantitative research methods are used. The paper presents our findings on the learning strategies of university students who study Chinese as a foreign language. 48 valid questionnaires have been collected. The results show that the university students always use Chinese language learning strategies, employing them at high level and the most commonly used by them kinds of strategies are Social strategies, Metacognitive strategies and Cognitive strategies. They sometimes use Compensation strategies, Memory strategies and Affective strategies and their use frequencies are at medium level. Abstract:This article reports the findings of a study conducted in English Literature at the Faculty of Cultural Studies in Universitas Brawijaya in 2020. The research focused on the most frequent language learning strategies used by 20 international program students’ batch of 2017 that have been conducted the Overseas Academic Program (OAP). For the data collection, data were gained from Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire version 7.0 in the form of online. The results of the study showed that the most frequent strategy used by batch of 2017 international class students is compensation strategy with an average 3.82. When the class of 2017 as EFL learner conducted the Overseas Academic Program (OAP), they were required to communicate with English speakers using English and when they forgot a vocabulary, they changed it using gestures to keep the conversation going and then tried to guess what the interlocutor would say after.

Abstract:Began with Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in the 1960s and extended to the widespread use of various Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) tools in education, language learning has embraced technology early on, achieved noticeable results, and found extensive practical use. However, due to the challenges in accessing user data from various language learning platforms, the measurement and assessment of language-related variables continue to rely on self-reporting and peer evaluations. This reliance hampers researchers to observe language learning from alternative perspectives, especially when it comes to analyzing raw behavioral data. To explore potential correlations between different learning modes, this study analyzed 2 million samples from Chinese students using an English language learning application. The study quantified the effectiveness of English vocabulary learning using the economic concept of return on investment (ROI) as an evaluation metric and identified four distinct learning strategies. It observed significant differences in learning ROI among learners who adopted different strategies. Based on this analysis, we recommend the following suggestions for improving language learning ROI: when memorizing new vocabulary, investing excessive amounts of time may be counterproductive; a more effective approach is to "eat less but more often," which means arranging review sessions at a reasonable pace and shortening the interval between each review.

Strategy Use in Oral Communication with Competent Synthesis and Complex Interaction

Abstract:Strategy use is a critical competence for academic achievement and problem solving in globalised and information-based knowledge economies. It involves skills such as synthesising information from task source materials and elaborating on interlocutors' viewpoints during integrated group discussions. However, evidence from empirical studies on this topic is scarce. We recruited 171 local Hong Kong undergraduate students to participate in an integrated group discussion task in Putonghua as an L2 (i.e., second language) and to complete a strategy use inventory of the task. The students' performances and responses were analysed with multiple statistical methods. The strategy use inventory of the integrated group discussion was validated. Five categories of strategy were identified: active engagement, non-verbal, synthesis, clarification and affective strategies. These strategies significantly predicted task performance (with 19.9% variation), leading to significant improvement in oral production quality. Both the synthesis (the integrative use of information) and active engagement (including elaborating viewpoints) strategies were significantly associated with task performance, which are rarely found in existing oral communication strategy inventories. The participants with high levels of task performance demonstrated significantly more use of the active engagement, clarification and synthesis strategies (with the first two merged in the complex interaction strategy) than those with medium or low task performance levels. The implications of the results are discussed.

Abstract:This study examines language learning strategy (LLS) use in connexion with foreign language attitude, proficiency and general school achievement among lower secondary students in Years 5 and 8 (<i>n</i> = 868) in Hungary. An adapted version of the Strategies Inventory for Language Learning questionnaire was used for data collection. The results showed that Hungarian students mainly engage in metacognitive strategies in both years. Differences between more and less proficient language learners' strategy use have also been found. With regard to the effect of LLS on foreign language attitude, the foreign language mark and school achievement, path analysis indicated a good fit in both years. The metacognitive, social and memory strategies primarily influenced foreign language attitudes and marks in Year 5. The metacognitive strategies had a slight impact on school achievement as well as on foreign language marks. We demonstrated the dominant effect of metacognitive strategies and the low effect of memory strategies in Year 8. In addition, metacognitive strategies also influenced foreign language marks. The effect of foreign language marks on school achievement was also remarkable. There was a strong impact on the children's attitudes through these variables.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the language learning strategies and autonomy of 143 Chinese junior high school students from Kunming, Yunnan province. The measuring instrument for learner autonomy (MILLA) and the strategy inventory for language learning (SILL) were used to collect data. Then, the relationship between learner autonomy and preference for language learning strategies was analyzed using Pearson Correlation. The results of the quantitative research revealed that participants perceived themselves as high-level autonomy learners (mean = 3.88, SD = 0.47) in all dimensions, including technical, psychological, political, philosophical, and socio-cultural dimensions. They usually use language learning strategies (mean = 3.57, SD = 0.67) of both direct and indirect strategies. The Chinese junior high school students perceived that they had the capacity to decide their goals and the contents of learning English. However, they also hoped that the teacher could be a collaborator during their learning process. They reported that they used meta-cognitive strategies at the highest frequency (mean = 3.68, SD = 0.78), while compensation strategies were reported at the lowest frequency (mean = 3.36, SD = 0.76). A moderate positive correlation (r = 0.68, 0.01 level 2-tailed) was found between the level of learner autonomy and the preference for language learning strategies. Suggestions and practical implications are offered for teachers to help students consciously use language learning strategies that can subsequently help them become autonomous learners.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the factors that caused the EFL learners’ English speaking difficulties and then investigate the successful learners’ strategy use to improve their English speaking performance. A five-level Likert-scale questionnaire was conducted to anonymously investigate 148 EFL sophomore and junior English majors in Taiwan. Results of the analysis showed that (a) psychological problems (e.g. nervousness, fear of making mistakes, and lack of confidence) was the primary reason for English speaking difficulties, followed by linguistic problems (e.g. insufficient vocabulary), and environmental problems (e.g. lack of learning context for English conversation); (b) a majority of successful learners tended to use various speaking strategies to improve their English speaking performance and particularly focused on linguistic accuracy by repeatedly practicing the pitch, pronunciation, and intonation. Furthermore, most of them seized the chances to practice speaking English, such as joining English social activities, or participating in English speech contests etc. They also used the body language (e.g. facial expressions, eye contacts, and gestures) for better communication. The findings suggest pedagogical implications for promoting the EFL learners’ speaking English.

Abstract:This paper attempts to illustrate the relationship between language learning strategies(LLS)and performance in College English Test(CET)Band 4 of Chinese non-English major undergraduate students studying in the Internet and multimedia environment.A survey based on Oxford’s(1990)Strategy Inventory for Language Learning(SILL)was administered to 238 first-year non-English majors from Peking University Health Science Center.The Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS)13.0 was used to analyze the data.The findings of the research suggest that the total CET-4 scores of the students were significantly related with direct learning strategies,including cognitive strategies,memory strategies and compensation strategies.The study also shows that in the Internet and multimedia environment,the listening scores of higher achievers are closely related to the five categories of strategies,namely,cognitive strategies,compensation strategies,affective strategies,memory strategies and social strategies,while the relationship of lower achievers’listening scores and their learning strategies does not show a correlation pattern.Suggestions are discussed for further improvement of Internet and computer-based language instruction,especially when it comes to providing strategy training for the students.
Communication Strategies, Difficulties, and Speaking Tasks in Foreign Language Learning

Abstract:Sage Open, Volume 14, Issue 3, July-September 2024. This study explored the communication strategies of college students majoring in one of five modern foreign languages (i.e., English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish) and their relation to communication confidence. It also explored the association between their strategy use and the difficulty regarding the speaking components, and students' feedback on pedagogical tasks to improve their speaking ability. A questionnaire survey of communication strategy was distributed to 538 college students in Taiwan, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 students. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the majored language and the use of communication strategies. Specifically, a one-way between-groups MANOVA revealed that the participants adopted the message reduction/alteration and fluency-oriented strategies frequently and equally, regardless of the language they studied. English and Spanish learners employed social affective, phonological awareness, and negotiation for meaning while speaking strategies more frequently than German learners. Students who reported difficulties in fluency, lexical resources, grammatical accuracy, and pronunciation while speaking the major language employed social affective strategies less frequently. Finally, students' preferences for particular tasks reflected the speaking components they wished to foster. It is concluded that lexical and grammatical knowledge should be emphasized first to build communication confidence and strengthen fluency.Plain language summaryExploring How Students Learn Foreign Languages: Communication Approaches, Challenges, and Speaking ExercisesThis research looked into how college students who are studying different foreign languages (like English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish) communicate and how confident they feel about it. However, those learning English and Spanish used strategies related to social interaction, pronunciation, and understanding the meaning of what's being said more often compared to those learning German. Students who struggled with fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation tended to use social interaction strategies less often. Also, the tasks students preferred for improving their speaking skills matched up with the aspects of speaking they wanted to get better at. In conclusion, it seems like building up vocabulary and grammar knowledge first can help students feel more confident in their communication and improve how fluently they speak.

Abstract:The predominant context for strategy research over the last three decades has focused on language learning situated in a conventional classroom environment. Computer technology has brought about many changes in language learning and has become ecological and normalized rather than a supporting tool in the language classroom. Consequently, the landscape of language learning has been rapidly and largely changed with the normalization of technologies in people’s daily communication. The pervasive use of mobile technologies and easy access to online resources require that digital language learners understand and employ appropriate learning strategies for learning effectiveness and that their teachers are able and willing to teach these strategies as needed. This article provides an overview of the state-of-the-art research into technology-enhanced language learning strategies. The strategies under review include those for language learning skill areas, language subsystems, and self-regulated learning. At the end, we discuss the pressing issues that Digital Age language learning has posed to learners, teachers, and researchers and propose considerations for strategy research in digital realms.
