Abstract:Since 2006, the amount and scale of assets of mutual funds have been soaring. According to the Securities Industry Association Web site statistics, the total number and shares of mutual funds had increased by 607 and 2327.6 billions from 2006 to 2011, respectively. However, the number of mutual fund companies has increased by only 14(a total of 66). Thus, mutual fund families as a new type of company have emerged to manage many mutual funds and large amount of assets. Our research questions are as follows: Why are the mutual fund families interested in issuing new mutual funds? Whether the rapid growth of mutual funds will damage their investment performance?Different from the traditional researchs which consider mutual funds as independent units, this article investigates these two research problems from the prospective of mutual funds' Matrix—mutual fund families. The research has important theoretical and practical implications. On the one hand, the research will help investors and the rating agencies of mutual funds to identify and evaluate the management companys and build a new mechanism of performance incentive between investors and mutual fund families. On the other hand, the research will help the regulatory authorities to objectively evaluate the performance of the mutual fund families, and improve the policy of issuing new mutual funds, and controlling the issuing activities of mutual fund families. Firstly, we theoretically discussed why the mutual fund families are interested in releasing new funds. Secondly, using the Stochastic Frontier Analysis(SFA) method we estimated the performance of mutual fund families and tested how new mutual funds affect it. We discovered that the average performance of the mutual fund families is low(the average profit efficiency is only 0.505). In addition, issuing new funds in the short term could improve the average performance of fund families; however, in the long term would damage it. Thirdly, the article discussed the threshold effects of issuing new funds on the performance of mutual fund families. We further discovered that to effectively promote the performance of mutual fund families every fund family should not issue more than 3 new funds within half year, and the number of their total mutual funds should not exceed 11. If the regulatory authorities make strict restrictions on the mutual funds of companies, which have issued a total of 3 mutual funds within half a year, or have more than 11 mutual funds, the technical inefficiency caused by intensive issuing funds could be eliminated.
