Abstract:Spatial clustering is a process of grouping a set of spatial objects into clusters so that objects within a cluster have high similarity to one another,,and are nearby in spatial location.Popula- tion and economic data are always gained from administration cells, which is presented as area data in GIS,so regional division can be seen as one kind of spatial clustering based on area data.In order to overcome disadvantages of administration cells,this paper applies the method of grid information system,which transforms spatial data from administration cells to grid cells,and then distributes popula- tion and economic data on the grid cells,which are used as basic u- nits to store and analyze data,and have better accuracy.Then a new Grid-based clustering algorithm based on grid information system is introduced in order to overcome difficulties resulting from subjectivity of density threshold.

Abstract:Geospatial clustering is an important topic in spatial analysis and knowledge discovery research. However, most existing clustering methods clusters geospatial data at data level without considering domain knowledge and users’ goals during the clustering process. In this paper, we propose an ontology-based geospatial cluster ensemble approach to produce good clustering results with the consideration of domain knowledge and users’ goals. The approach includes two components: an ontology-based expert system and a cluster ensemble method. The ontology-based expert system is to represent geospatial and clustering domain knowledge and to identify the appropriate clustering components (e.g., geospatial datasets, attributes of the datasets, and clustering methods) based on a specific application requirement. The cluster ensemble is to combine a diverse set of clustering results produced by recommended clustering components into an optimal clustering result. A real case study has been conducted to demonstrate the efficiency and practicality of the approach.

Abstract:Clustering, as a powerful data mining technique for discovering interesting data distributions and patterns in the underlying database, is used in many fields, such as statistical data analysis, pattern recognition, image processing, and other business applications. Density-based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) (Esteret al., 1996) is a good performance clustering method for dealing with spatial data although it leaves many problems to be solved. For example, DBSCAN requires a necessary user-specified threshold while its computation is extremely time-consuming by current method such as OPTICS, etc. (Ankerstet al., 1999), and the performance of DBSCAN under different norms has yet to be examined. In this paper, we first developed a method based on statistical information of distance space in database to determine the necessary threshold. Then our examination of the DBSCAN performance under different norms showed that there was determinable relation between them. Finally, we used two artificial databases to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed methods.

Abstract:Geospatial clustering is an important topic in knowledge discovery research and geospatial information systems. However, current clustering research emphasizes the development of more efficient and effective clustering methods without paying much attention to domain knowledge and users' goals during the clustering process. Making better use of geospatial and clustering knowledge to select proper methods and datasets will help achieve clustering results that better meet users' requirements. In this article, we present the GEO_CLUST framework for performing geospatial clustering. The framework consists of the GeoCO ontology for geospatial clustering and the ontology reasoner reasoning mechanism. The GeoCO ontology is used to represent geospatial and clustering domain knowledge. The ontology reasoner uses classification and decomposition techniques to specify users' tasks. Using the framework, users can identify the appropriate geospatial data and clustering method based on their specific goals. To demonstrate the framework, two case studies on finding population density clusters in Western Canada and locating five hospitals in South Carolina are discussed. The results show that the framework can select the proper datasets and clustering methods with respect to users' goals.

Abstract:Existing clustering methods rely on prior knowledge of the data set to cluster it, so the quality of the clustering effect is entirely dependent on the user’s familiarity with the data set. Furthermore, when extracting the information from a data set, existing clustering algorithms frequently ignore the geometric distribution of data, making it difficult to identify data objects in their entirety and detect local spatial structures. To address these issues, this paper proposes a spatial subcluster clustering method by grid-connection, which automatically obtains subclusters by iterative local labeling without requiring a priori knowledge of the data set and efficiently extracts correlations between data by establishing relationships between subclusters by grid-connecting. Experiments are conducted to validate the proposed algorithm against existing state-of-the-art algorithms on 9 synthetic and 4 real data sets. The results show SSCG can efficiently utilize the information on the grid space without relying on a priori knowledge, and the overall performance is better than the existing advanced algorithms.

Abstract:Existing methods of spatial data clustering have focused on point data, whose similarity can be easily defined. Due to the complex shapes and alignments of polygons, the similarity between non-overlapping polygons is important to cluster polygons. This study attempts to present an efficient method to discover clustering patterns of polygons by incorporating spatial cognition principles and multilevel graph partition. Based on spatial cognition on spatial similarity of polygons, four new similarity criteria (i.e. the distance, connectivity, size and shape) are developed to measure the similarity between polygons, and used to visually distinguish those polygons belonging to the same clusters from those to different clusters. The clustering method with multilevel graph-partition first coarsens the graph of polygons at multiple levels, using the four defined similarities to find clusters with maximum similarity among polygons in the same clusters, then refines the obtained clusters by keeping minimum similarity between different clusters. The presented method is a general algorithm for discovering clustering patterns of polygons and can satisfy various demands by changing the weights of distance, connectivity, size and shape in spatial similarity. The presented method is tested by clustering residential areas and buildings, and the results demonstrate its usefulness and universality.

Abstract:After analysis of present management techniques of massive spatial data on net, cluster technique was introduced to take full advantage of high performance in computing, high reliability and other features of cluster technique. Multi-level GIS application server structure cluster based was designed and optimized. Integrated with general spatial database management strategies such as spatial index and partition, remote in-line procedures and other strategies, a new type of distributed data management techniques for clustered vast quantities of spatial data was proposed. An application with Oracle real application cluster (RAC) and Oracle9i application server tests the applying possibility and high performance.

Abstract:Distributed data collection and analysis over networks are ubiquitous, especially over the wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Distributed clustering is one of the most important topics in distributed data analysis. It is desired to explore the hidden structure of the data collected/stored in geographically distributed nodes. In recent years, several distributed data clustering techniques have been developed based on the K-means algorithm or the Gaussian mixture model. In these methods, data structures are captured by measures only based on the first and the second order statistics. When the structure of cluster data is complicated, these statistics are insufficient and may lead to unsatisfactory clustering results. In such a case, using information theoretic measures can achieve better clustering performance since they take the whole distribution of cluster data into account. In this work, we incorporate an information theoretic measure into the cost function of the distributed clustering, to present a linear and a kernel distributed clustering algorithms. In the algorithms, each node solves a local clustering problem through diffusion cooperation with its neighboring nodes. In order to preserve privacy and save communication costs, in the cooperation, nodes merely exchange a few parameters instead of original data with their one-hop neighbors. Simulation results show that the proposed distributed algorithms can achieve almost as good clustering results as the corresponding centralized information theoretic clustering algorithms on both synthetic and real data.

Abstract:GIS is a geo-referenced data based system for manipulating digital spatial and thematic data. Because of its unique properties of spatial data (spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity), there is an urgent need to investigate the mechanisms of spatial processes through exploring spatial data. The techniques of spatial analysis can be categorized into six groups: (1) generation of spatial data and its preliminary treatment; (2) spatialization of attribute data and scale transformation of spatial data; (3) visualization and exploration of spatial data; (4) geo-statistics; (5) analysis of lattice data; and (6) reversing information from complicated spatial data. To meet the real world solutions, a procedural diagram of spatial data analysis is suggested as below: (1) preliminary data treatment; (2) modeling; (3) solution; and (4) interpretation. Various techniques are being employed to investigate spatial processes, the identical study objective and some common characteristics of the study object may lead to the integration and convergence of the various approaches, and further the introduction of a general science: spatial mathematics. A same important issue is to develop robust spatial analysis computer packages for public uses.

Abstract:Spatial clustering deals with the unsupervised grouping of places into clusters and finds important applications in urban planning and marketing. Current spatial clustering models disregard information about the people who are related to the clustered places. In this paper, we show how the density-based clustering paradigm can be extended to apply on places which are visited by users of a geo-social network. Our model considers both spatial information and the social relationships between users who visit the clustered places. After formally defining the model and the distance measure it relies on, we present efficient algorithms for its implementation, based on spatial indexing. We evaluate the effectiveness of our model via a case study on real data; in addition, we design two quantitative measures, called social entropy and community score to evaluate the quality of the discovered clusters. The results show that geo-social clusters have special properties and cannot be found by applying simple spatial clustering approaches. The efficiency of our index-based implementation is also evaluated experimentally.

Abstract:Spatiotemporal clustering is one of the most advanced research topics in geospatial data mining. It has been challenging to discover cluster features with different spatiotemporal densities in geographic information data set. This paper presents an effective density-based spatiotemporal clustering algorithm (DBSTC). First, we propose a method to measure the degree of similarity of a core point to the geometric center of its spatiotemporal reachable neighborhood, which can effectively solve the isolated noise point misclassification problem that exists in the shared nearest neighbor methods. Second, we propose an ordered reachable time window distribution algorithm to calculate the reachable time window for each spatiotemporal point in the data set to solve the problem of different clusters with different temporal densities. The effectiveness and advantages of the DBSTC algorithm are demonstrated in several simulated data sets. In addition, practical applications to seismic data sets demonstrate the capability of the DBSTC algorithm to uncover clusters of foreshocks and aftershocks and help to improve the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of dynamic spatiotemporal processes in digital earth.

Today, however, the problem is often that we have too much data. Spatially redundant or approximately redundant points may refer to a single feature (plus noise) rather than many distinct spatial features. We use a machine learning approach with density-based clustering to compress such spatial data into a set of representative features.

Abstract:Clustering is widely used in several fields such as statistics, machine learning, pattern recognition and numerical analysis. Recently, more and more attention has been paid to it. In this paper, five issues commonly concerned are discussed, they are: assessment of clustering results, estimation of total number of clusters, data preparation, measures of data proximity and outlier handling. Representative solutions to these issues are surveyed, conclusions are summed up, development trend of algorithms to deal with these five issues is forecasted.

Abstract:Integrative management of massive spatio-temporal data and the relevant capabilities for time series analysis are important research targets of new generation GIS software architecture.At present,access efficiency of spatial and spatio-temporal data based on seamless massive table mechanism needs solid improvement.For managing massive spatio-temporal data effectively and improving spatio-temporal search performance,partitioning and clustering method of large object-relational database platform are extended to spatio-temporal dimension,and performance optimization method for massive spaito-temporal data based on spatio-temporal partition clustering is presented,which is based on extended relational spatio-temporal data model.The search efficiency test on single table of 2GB to 60GB shows that STPC provides better spaito-temporal search performance(about 10.1%) than the normal data organization methods.

Abstract:Spatial regression or geographically weighted regression models have been widely adopted to capture the effects of auxiliary information on a response variable of interest over a region. In contrast, relationships between response and auxiliary variables are expected to exhibit complex spatial patterns in many applications. This paper proposes a new approach for spatial regression, called spatially clustered regression, to estimate possibly clustered spatial patterns of the relationships. We combine K-means-based clustering formulation and penalty function motivated from a spatial process known as Potts model for encouraging similar clustering in neighboring locations. We provide a simple iterative algorithm to fit the proposed method, scalable for large spatial datasets. Through simulation studies, the proposed method demonstrates its superior performance to existing methods even under the true structure does not admit spatial clustering. Finally, the proposed method is applied to crime event data in Tokyo and produces interpretable results for spatial patterns. Abstract:Spatial clustering is an essential method for the comprehensive understanding of a region. Spatial clustering divides all spatial units into different clusters. The attributes of each cluster of the spatial units are similar, and simultaneously, they are as continuous as spatially possible. In spatial clustering, the handling of spatial outliers is important. It is necessary to improve spatial integration so that each cluster is connected as much as possible, while protecting spatial outliers can help avoid the excessive masking of attribute differences This paper proposes a new spatial clustering method for raster data robust to spatial outliers. The method employs a sliding window to scan the entire region to determine spatial outliers. Additionally, a mechanism based on the range and standard deviation of the spatial units in each window is designed to judge whether the spatial integration should be further improved or the spatial outliers should be protected. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed method, we applied it in two case study areas, namely, Changping District and Pinggu District in Beijing. The results show that the proposed method can retain the spatial outliers while ensuring that the clusters are roughly contiguous. This method can be used as a simple but powerful and easy-to-interpret alternative to existing geographical spatial clustering methods.

Development of Subsurface Spatial Information Model System using Clustering and Geostatistics Approach

Abstract:Since the current database systems for managing geotechnical investigation results were limited by being described boring test result in point feature, it has been trouble for using other GIS data. Although there are some studies for spatial characteristics of subsurface modeling, it is rather lack of being interoperable with GIS, considering geotechnical engineering facts. This is reason for difficulty of practical uses. In this study, we has developed subsurface spatial information model through extracting needed geotechnical engineering data from geotechnical information DB. The developed geotechnical information clustering program(GEOCL) has made a cluster of boring formation(and formation ratio), classification of layer, and strength characteristics of subsurface. The interpolation of boring data has been achieved through zonal kriging method in the consideration of spatial distribution of created cluster. Finally, we make a subsurface spatial information model to integrate with digital elevation model, and visualize 3-dimensional model by subsurface spatial information viewing program(SSIVIEW). We expect to strengthen application capacity of developed model in subsurface interpretation and foundation design of construction works.

Abstract:We present an innovative approach for clustering retail customers using semi-supervised geographic information. The approach aims at clustering (or segm enting) customers not only depending on their age, spending, etc., but also on their dwelling, which can discover userful customer patterns for the retailers marketing strategy. In real retail applications unsupervised clustering faces the problem of normalizing multiple hetergeneous features, which results in limited "ndings. Moreover, human knowledge cannot be incorporated in the process. Consequently, we propose a semi-superivsed approach which supports two kinds of human knowledge on the culstering 1) hard constraint - must-link and cannot-link and 2) soft constraint - distance comparison. The constraints can be appropriately applied in our tick of customer clustering. asad on the constraints, we develop a framework integrating metric learning (by weighing features) and clustering. The experimental results on real customer pro" le, comparing with the unsuperivsed approach, show reasonable clusters. In addition, using the proposed approach, the learned feature weights reveal valuable knowledge on the customers.
