Abstract:Wireless industry nowadays is facing two major challenges: 1) how to support the vertical industry applications so that to expand the wireless industry market and 2) how to further enhance device capability and user experience. In this paper, we propose a technology framework to address these challenges. The proposed technology framework is based on end-to-end vertical and horizontal slicing, where vertical slicing enables vertical industry and services and horizontal slicing improves system capacity and user experience. The technology development on vertical slicing has already started in late 4G and early 5G and is mostly focused on slicing the core network. We envision this trend to continue with the development of vertical slicing in the radio access network and the air interface. Moving beyond vertical slicing, we propose to horizontally slice the computation and communication resources to form virtual computation platforms for solving the network capacity scaling problem and enhancing device capability and user experience. In this paper, we explain the concept of vertical and horizontal slicing and illustrate the slicing techniques in the air interface, the radio access network, the core network and the computation platform. This paper aims to initiate the discussion on the long-range technology roadmap and spur development on the solutions for E2E network slicing in 5G and beyond.

Abstract:The Electric Power 5G Network, serving as the foundational support for the stable operation of the smart grid, plays a pivotal role in enhancing the capabilities and efficiency of power grid management. As a pivotal technology within the realm of 5G, network slicing involves the logical segregation of network resources, thereby establishing multiple independent networks that effectively cater to distinct user demands for differentiated services. The deployment and orchestration process of network slicing inherently presents a resource allocation challenge. The efficacy of resource allocation algorithms significantly contributes to the enhancement of spectrum resource utilization while ensuring the fulfillment of Quality of Service (QoS) requisites for users.In order to address the resource allocation predicament between slices and to furnish superior service for operations, this paper introduces an optimization methodology for channel resource QoS allocation in the domain of electric power communication, hinging upon the paradigm of 5G slicing. This methodology conscientiously balances equity among various slices and the demands of users. Furthermore, a comparative analysis with proportionally fair and maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio algorithms is conducted using simulation results. The outcomes underscore that the proposed algorithm can simultaneously preserve fairness while attaining elevated user spectrum efficiency.

Abstract:In the 5th-Generation of Mobile Networks (5G), network slices are formed to provide customized services by sharing the wireless resource and the infrastructures of the system. To improve the wireless resource capacity, it is necessary to multiplex the wireless resource among the slices efficiently. At the same time, wireless resource isolation is significant to meet the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of one slice when other slices vary. Therefore, how to achieve high wireless resource capacity while achieving the wireless resource isolation among slices is a significant problem. This paper studies wireless resource allocation in sliced 5G networks considering the tradeoff between the multiplexing and the isolation of wireless resource. Firstly, two indicators are defined to denote the wireless resource multiplexing gain and the wireless resource isolation performance, respectively. And the relationship between them is further analyzed. Next, the wireless resource allocation is formulated as an optimization problem, which aims to maximize the wireless resource multiplexing gain with the constraint of the wireless resource isolation requirements. Then, an improved genetic algorithm based on the optimal preservation scheme and the matrix coding is designed to solve the formulated problem. Simulation results show that, compared with the existing scheme without the isolation performance constraints of the slices and the scheme without multiplexing wireless resource among slices, the proposed scheme can achieve a better resource multiplexing gain while guaranteeing the isolation requirements of the slices.

Abstract:Network slicing allows 5G network operators to provide service to multiple tenants with diverging service requirements. This paper considers network slicing aware optimal resource allocation in terms of throughput and energy efficiency. We define a heterogeneous Quality of Service (QoS) framework for a sliced radio access network network with per-slice zero-forcing beamforming and jointly optimize power and bandwidth allocation across slices and users. The Pareto boundary of this multi-objective optimization problem is obtained by two different algorithms based on the utility profile and scalarization approaches combined with generalized fractional programming. Numerical results show the merits of jointly allocating bandwidth and transmission power and how throughput and global energy efficiency are influenced by slice specific QoS requirements.

Abstract:In the context of Fifth Generation (5G) mobile networks, the concept of "Slice as a Service" (SlaaS) promotes mobile network operators to flexibly share infrastructures with mobile service providers and stakeholders. However, it also challenges with an emerging demand for efficient online algorithms to optimize the request-and-decision-based inter-slice resource management strategy. Based on genetic algorithms, this paper presents a novel online optimizer that efficiently approaches towards the ideal slicing strategy with maximized long-term network utility. The proposed method encodes slicing strategies into binary sequences to cope with the request-and-decision mechanism. It requires no a priori knowledge about the traffic/utility models, and therefore supports heterogeneous slices, while providing solid effectiveness, good robustness against non-stationary service scenarios, and high scalability.

Abstract:Network Slicing (NS) is a key enabler of the upcoming 5G and beyond system, leveraging on both Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN), NS will enable a flexible deployment of Network Functions (NFs) belonging to multiple Service Function Chains (SFC) over various administrative and technological domains. Our novel architecture addresses the complexities and heterogeneities of verticals targeted by 5G systems, whereby each slice consists of a set of SFCs, and each SFC handles specific traffic within the slice. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a MILP optimization model to solve the complexities that arise from this new environment. Our proposed model enables a cost-optimal deployment of network slices allowing a mobile network operator to efficiently allocate the underlying layer resources according to its users' requirements. We also design a greedy-based heuristic to investigate the possible trade-offs between execution runtime and network slice deployment. For each network slice, the proposed solution guarantees the required delay and the bandwidth, while efficiently handling the use of both the VNF nodes and the physical nodes, reducing the service provider's Operating Expenditure (OPEX).

Abstract:To realize 5G network slicing, the virtual resource scheduling and allocation method based on NFV and SDN is designed. The scheme comprehensively considers 5G communication technology and network slice structure, and establishes the optimal mathematical model of network slice operation economy. Then the network functions and resources are virtualized by NFV and SDN, the greedy algorithm is adopted to solve the mapping problem of network slices, and the specific implementation algorithm is provided. The simulation results show that the allocation algorithm can customize the management of network slice resources, achieve flexible control and sharing of network traffic and resources, and significantly promote the construction, optimization and promotion of 5G mobile communication network architecture.

Abstract:The fifth-generation (5G) networks are expected to be able to satisfy users' different quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. Network slicing is a promising technology for 5G networks to provide services tailored for users' specific QoS demands. Driven by the increased massive wireless data traffic from different application scenarios, efficient resource allocation schemes should be exploited to improve the flexibility of network resource allocation and capacity of 5G networks based on network slicing. Due to the diversity of 5G application scenarios, new mobility management schemes are greatly needed to guarantee seamless handover in network slicing based 5G systems. In this article, we introduce a logical architecture for network slicing based 5G systems, and present a scheme for managing mobility between different access networks, as well as a joint power and subchannel allocation scheme in spectrum-sharing two-tier systems based on network slicing, where both the co-tier interference and cross-tier interference are taken into account. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed resource allocation scheme can flexibly allocate network resources between different slices in 5G systems. Finally, several open issues and challenges in network slicing based 5G networks are discussed, including network reconstruction, network slicing management and cooperation with other 5G technologies.

Abstract:As an emerging and promising network paradigm, network slicing creates multiple logical networks on shared infrastructure to provide services with customized Quality-of-Service (QoS) for heterogeneous devices and applications. However, network complexity and service heterogeneity pose a huge challenge in achieving optimal performance and ensuring stringent QoS requirements. In this paper, we design a hierarchical deep reinforcement learning based 5G radio access network slicing framework to achieve scalable and efficient resource allocation. By decomposing the resource allocation problem into a slice-level task and several user-level tasks, the proposed framework tackles each task with an agent, thus conquering insufficient exploration and achieving scalable management. Knowledge transfer and progressive learning are employed to improve training efficiency and stability, respectively. We apply collaborative training to eliminate distribution mismatch by refining value approximators and policies of agents alternately. Extensive experiments show that the proposed framework can learn effective resource allocation policies stably and efficiently and outperform other methods in network utility maximization and QoS assurance, which improves the network utility by 25% and 8% compared with the random strategy and the ADMM strategy, respectively. Furthermore, we validate that our framework is more robust to changes in network traffic conditions including network congestion.
Using Deep Reinforcement Learning for 5G RAN Slicing Resource Allocation in New Power Load Management System

Abstract:In recent years, extreme weather has caused unstable power generation on the power side, posing a great need to build a new power load management system to unleash the ability of flexible load regulation for ensuring the balance between power grid sources and loads. The new power load management system needs to monitor and regulate dispersed load resources, thus posing higher requirements for the real-time performance and resource guarantee capabilities of communication networks. Currently, there is no slicing algorithm and communication resource allocation algorithm specifically designed for the new power load management system in 5G communication networks. To address these issues, this paper categorizes the service of the new power load management system and uses 5G slicing to carry it out, establishing a new power load management system 5G radio access net-work(RAN) slicing resource allocation model. The slicing resource allocation problem is transformed into a Markov decision process, and the state space, action space, and reward function are designed. Additionally, a dueling deep Q network(DQN) based 5G RAN slicing resource allocation algorithm is proposed, which learns from the historical resource needs of slices to provide the optimal resource allocation strategy. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can meet the communication resource needs of the new power load management system and has very high resource utilization efficiency.

Abstract:End-to-End network slicing is an emerging technology with huge potential to carry flexible resource provisioning for the next generation of mobile networks (5G). With the powerful SDN and NFV technologies, multiple and logical network slices of various services can be deployed to the same underlying infrastructure. Physical resources are flexibly configured for different use cases. Therefore, it is necessary to explore how to guide the implementation of network slices via a general design policy. In this paper, we propose a service-aware network slicing design policy for 5G use cases, not only to satisfy various service requirements for different applications but also to enhance resource efficiency with fluctuated traffic demands. Firstly, multiple design objectives of slices are presented to guarantee different services in diverse use cases. Then we formulate a deterministic optimization model of the network slicing design problem and further extend it into a robust version considering uncertain traffic demands. Besides, a heuristic algorithm is proposed to obtain a promising network slicing design policy with the low computational effort, which is inspired by the multiple-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm. The effectiveness of the present formulations and algorithms is verified by a series of simulations.

Abstract:Network slicing is a widely discussed technology for 5G broadcasting services, as it allows the operators to create end-to-end virtual slices across the 5G core (5GC) and the 5G radio access network (RAN). The joint network slicing is necessary for 5GC and 5G RAN in a bid to enhance the overall resource utilization and quality of service. Nevertheless, as the dimension of network resource and user demand increase, the computational complexity of slice status update goes up as well. To overcome this scalability problem, we propose a data driven approach to realize joint slice reconfiguration from 5GC to 5G RAN in real-time. Our design shortens significantly the time of slice status update by mapping the resource status to a two-dimensional vector graph. In addition, we also introduce a corresponding slice reconfiguration algorithm to balance the load of each slice in 5GC and 5G RAN. Simulation results justify that our proposed approach can greatly reduce the cost of slice status update and achieve desirable slice reconfiguration performance.

5G Network Slicing for Wi-Fi Networks

Abstract:Future networks will pave the way for a myriad of applications with different requirements and Wi-Fi will play an important role in local area networks. This is why network slicing is proposed by 5G networks, allowing to offer multiple logical networks tailored to the different user requirements, over a common infrastructure. However, this is not supported by current Wi-Fi networks. In this paper, we propose a standard-compliant network slicing approach for the radio access segment of Wi-Fi by defining multiple Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs) per Access Point (AP). We present two algorithms, one that assigns resources according to the requirements of slices in a static way, and another that dynamically configures the slices according to the network's conditions and relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The proposed algorithms were validated through extensive simulations, conducted in the ns-3 network simulator, and complemented by theoretical assessments. The obtained results reveal that the two proposed slicing approaches outperform today's Wi-Fi access technique, reaching lower error probability for bandwidth intensive slices and lower latency for time-critical slices. Simultaneously, the proposed approach is up to 32 times more energy efficient, when considering slices tailored for low-power and low-bandwidth devices, while increasing the overall spectrum efficiency.

Abstract:The core innovation in future 5G cellular networksnetwork slicing, aims at providing a flexible and efficient framework of network organization and resource management. The revolutionary network architecture based on slices, makes most of the current network cost models obsolete, as they estimate the expenditures in a static manner. In this paper, a novel methodology is proposed, in which a value chain in sliced networks is presented. Based on the proposed value chain, the profits generated by different slices are analyzed, and the task of network resource management is modeled as a multiobjective optimization problem. Setting strong assumptions, this optimization problem is analyzed starting from a simple ideal scenario. By removing the assumptions step-by-step, realistic but complex use cases are approached. Through this progressive analysis, technical challenges in slice implementation and network optimization are investigated under different scenarios. For each challenge, some potentially available solutions are suggested, and likely applications are also discussed.

Abstract:Network slicing is considered one of the key enabling technologies for 5G due to its ability to customize and "slice" a common resource to support diverse services and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://verticals.This" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> paper introduces a novel inter-operator network slicing framework in which multiple mobile network operators (MNOs) can coordinate and jointly slice their accessible spectrum resources in both licensed and unlicensed bands. For licensed band slicing, we propose an inter-operator spectrum aggregation method that allows two or more MNOs to cooperate and share their licensed bands to support a common set of service types. We then consider the sharing of unlicensed bands. Because all MNOs enjoy equal rights to accessing these bands, we introduce the concept of right sharing for MNOs to share and trade their spectrum access rights. We develop a {\em modified back-of-the-envelope (mBoE) method} for MNOs to evaluate their {\em Value-of-Rights (VoR)} when coexisting with other wireless technologies. A {\em network slicing game} based on the overlapping coalition formation game is formulated to investigate cooperation between MNOs. We prove that our proposed game always has at least one stable slicing structure that maximizes the social welfare. To implement our proposed framework without requiring MNOs to reveal private information to other MNOs, we develop a distributed algorithm called D-ADMM-PVS. Performance evaluation of our proposed framework is provided using a discrete-event simulator that is driven by real MNO deployment scenarios based on over 400 base station locations deployed by two primary cellular operators in the city of <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Dublin.Numerical" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> results show that our proposed framework can almost double the capacity for all supported services for each MNO in an urban setting.

Energy Efficient RAN Slicing and Beams Selection for Multiplexing of Heterogeneous Services in 5G mmWave Networks

Abstract:In this paper, we study a RAN resource-slicing problem for energy-efficient communication in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based millimeter-wave (mmWave) downlink (DL) network consisting of enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) services. Specifically, assuming a fixed set of predefined beams, we address an energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem to obtain the optimal beam selection, Resource Block (RB), and transmit power allocation policy to serve URLLC and eMBB users on the same physical radio resources. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer non-linear fractional programming (MINLFP) problem considering minimum data rate and latency in packet delivery constraints. By leveraging the properties of fractional programming theory, we first transform the formulated non-convex optimization problem in fractional form into a tractable subtractive form. Subsequently, we solve the transformed problem using a two-loop iterative algorithm. The main resource-slicing problem is solved in the inner loop utilizing the difference of convex (DC) programming and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques. Subsequently, the outer loop is solved using the Dinkelbach method to acquire an improved solution in every iteration until it converges. Our simulation results illustrate the performance gains of the proposed methodology with respect to baseline algorithms with the fixed and mixed resource grid models.

Abstract:Network slicing is one of the key technologies for 5th-Generation (5G). It enables operators to construct network slices with similar qualities as dedicated stand-alone networks, but to realize them on a common physical platform. Meanwhile, the isolation among logical network slices can keep them from the negative impacts of other network slices. In this paper, we give an overview of the radio access network (RAN) slicing, and present some viewpoints on three categories of network slices. Moreover, an approach, which dynamically creates RAN slice to meet specific business and service requirements, is proposed. It does not only optimize performance and maximize resources utilization, but also shorten the creating time of slices.

Abstract:The 5th generation (5G) and beyond network offers substantial promise as the ideal wireless technology to replace the existing inflexible wired connections in traditional factories of today. 5G network slicing allows for tailored allocation of resources to different network services, each with unique Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. This paper presents a novel solution for slice-aware radio resource allocation based on a convex optimisation and control framework for applications in smart factory wireless networks. The proposed framework dynamically allocates minimum power and sub-channels to downlink mixed service type industrial users categorised into three slices: Capacity Limited (CL), Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC), and Time Sensitive (TS) slices. Given that the base station (BS) has limited transmission power, we enforce admission control by effectively relaxing the target rate constraints for current connections in the CL slice. This rate readjustment occurs whenever power consumption exceeds manageable levels. Simulation results show that our approach minimises power, allocates sub-channels to users, maintains slice isolation, and delivers QoS-specific communications to users in all the slices despite time-varying number of users and changing network conditions.

Abstract:It is widely acknowledged that network slicing can tackle the diverse use cases and connectivity services of the forthcoming next-generation mobile networks (5G). Resource scheduling is of vital importance for improving resource-multiplexing gain among slices while meeting specific service requirements for radio access network (RAN) slicing. Unfortunately, due to the performance isolation, diversified service requirements, and network dynamics (including user mobility and channel states), resource scheduling in RAN slicing is very challenging. In this paper, we propose an intelligent resource scheduling strategy (iRSS) for 5G RAN slicing. The main idea of an iRSS is to exploit a collaborative learning framework that consists of deep learning (DL) in conjunction with reinforcement learning (RL). Specifically, DL is used to perform large time-scale resource allocation, whereas RL is used to perform online resource scheduling for tackling small time-scale network dynamics, including inaccurate prediction and unexpected network states. Depending on the amount of available historical traffic data, an iRSS can flexibly adjust the significance between the prediction and online decision modules for assisting RAN in making resource scheduling decisions. Numerical results show that the convergence of an iRSS satisfies online resource scheduling requirements and can significantly improve resource utilization while guaranteeing performance isolation between slices, compared with other benchmark algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the resource slicing problem in a dynamic multiplexing scenario of two distinct 5G services, namely Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC) and enhanced Mobile BroadBand (eMBB). While eMBB services focus on high data rates, URLLC is very strict in terms of latency and reliability. In view of this, the resource slicing problem is formulated as an optimization problem that aims at maximizing the eMBB data rate subject to a URLLC reliability constraint, while considering the variance of the eMBB data rate to reduce the impact of immediately scheduled URLLC traffic on the eMBB reliability. To solve the formulated problem, an optimization-aided Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) based framework is proposed, including: 1) eMBB resource allocation phase, and 2) URLLC scheduling phase. In the first phase, the optimization problem is decomposed into three subproblems and then each subproblem is transformed into a convex form to obtain an approximate resource allocation solution. In the second phase, a DRL-based algorithm is proposed to intelligently distribute the incoming URLLC traffic among eMBB users. Simulation results show that our proposed approach can satisfy the stringent URLLC reliability while keeping the eMBB reliability higher than 90%.
