Abstract:When an IEEE 802.15.4 network has many nodes and is almost saturated, the probability of collision is large, and the throughput is small. The main reasons are the adoption of slotted CSMA/CA and the mechanism that if a data transmission cannot be completed before the end of contention access period (CAP), it has to wait until the start of the CAP in the next superframe. This paper proposes an enhanced collision-avoidance MAC protocol for IEEE 802.15.4, and establishes a simulation model to analyze and compare the enhanced collision-avoidance MAC and the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC. The proposed protocol, compatible with the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol, has less probability of collision (almost 0), higher probability of successful transmission (close to 1), and larger network throughput (more than two times of that of IEEE 802.15.4).

Abstract:The release of IEEE 802.15.4 medium access control (MAC) and physical layer specifications represents a significant milestone in promoting deployment of wireless sensor networks . This paper first analyzes the performance of the contention access period (CAP) specified in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard by integrating the discrete-time Markov chain models of the node states and the channel states. Then a modified CAP is analyzed, which could significantly improve the performance of the system. Based on the theoretical analysis of the CAP and the effect of the modification, we have that in the saturated network of IEEE 802.15.4, the collision probability is large, and the throughput is small. The main reasons are the employment of slotted carrier sense multiple access-collision avoidance and the mechanism that if a frame transmission cannot be completed before the end of the CAP, it has to wait until the start of the next CAP. Thus an enhanced collision-avoidance MAC protocol, which achieves a better performance and is compatible with the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, is proposed to improve the performance of the system. Extensive simulations validate our conclusions.

Abstract:IEEE 802.15 (TM) working group has designed the IEEE Std. 802.15.4 to target the low-rate wireless personal area network (LR-WPAN) which is characterized by low complexity, low cost and low power. The IEEE Std. 802.15.4 specifies operations of the physical layer (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) sublayer. These standards are to ensure acceptable system performance in terms of network PHY collisions, MAC collisions, throughput, average transmission delay, and energy efficiency. Yet there axe a number of factors that may affect the system performance, including beacon order (BO), backoff exponent (BE), contention window (CW), existence of hidden terminal problem, and existence of acknowledgement (ACK) mechanism. Understanding the impacts of these factors is of great importance in system design to improve performance. These impacts are examined numerically via network simulator (ns-2) in the current work, which leads to some nontrivial findings.

The extended models could be used to analyse the performance of the unslotted CSMA/CA strategy specified in IEEE 802.15.4 as well as that of the slotted CSMA/CA strategy. Abstract:This paper analyzes the non-persistent carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) mechanism, and simulates its application in IEEE 802.15.4. We find that throughputs are relevant to the normalized propagation delay and the basic time period (BTP) of slotted CSMA. The throughputs of slotted and unslotted CSMA are almost equal when the normalized propagation delay is much less than 1 and the BTP is equal to the propagation delay. Moreover, for slotted CSMA, the BTP selection should be cautious because an unsuitable BTP will make the performance of the protocol worse. In IEEE 802.15.4, the normalized propagation delay is much less than 1, so it is inappropriate for the usage of a slotted carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) mechanism whose BTP is 20 symbols. Finally, we compare the performance of slotted and unslotted CSMA/CA in IEEE 802.15.4 and verify the conclusion by simulation.

Abstract:Low-rate personal area network (LR-WPAN) specified by the IEEE Std. 802.15.4 is characterized by low complexity, low cost and low power. It holds great potential in many fields, such as telemetry, patient monitoring, and industrial automated control. Yet one of the most important determining factors is the power consumption, since most standards compliant devices are believed to be battery-powered.In this paper, we analyze power consumption of the sleep mode, specifically, the indirect mode in downlink transmission and the direct mode in uplink transmission. Analysis by other researchers and by our own indicates that overhearing presents a significant problem in energy waste and should be avoided. Yet unlike the case of IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) where RTS/CTS mechanism is specifically adopted to this end, LR-WPAN is designed to operate without RTS/CTS to reduce system complexity. To attack the overhearing problem, we propose a sleep mechanism in the backoff stage in uplink transmission. The efficiency of such mechanism is evaluated analytically using the system model that we have recently developed and is verified numerically via ns-2.

Abstract:In this paper, a high efficient baseband transceiver is proposed for IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN systems. A Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) based non-coherent demodulation scheme is used in the transceiver. The Packet Error Rate (PER) of the proposed transceiver is <; 1% at SNR of 2.9dB, which outperforms the prior works. Implemented in a 0.18um CMOS technology, the overall power consumption is 4.8mW at 8.0MHz system clock.

Abstract:In this paper, a low power transceiver for wireless sensor networks (WSN) is proposed. The system is designed with fully functional blocks including a receiver, a fractional-N frequency synthesizer, and a class-E transmitter, and it is optimized with a good balance among output power, sensitivity, power consumption, and silicon area. A transmitter and receiver (TX-RX) shared input-output matching network is used so that only one off-chip inductor is needed in the system. The power and area efficiency-oriented, fully-integrated frequency synthesizer is able to provide programmable output frequencies in the 2.4 GHz range while occupying a small silicon area. Implemented in a standard 0.18 μm RF Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology, the whole transceiver occupies a chip area of 0.5 mm2 (1.2 mm2 including bonding pads for a QFN package). Measurement results suggest that the design is able to work at amplitude shift keying (ASK)/on-off-keying (OOK) and FSK modes with up to 500 kbps data rate. With an input sensitivity of −60 dBm and an output power of 3 dBm, the receiver, transmitter and frequency synthesizer consumes 2.3 mW, 4.8 mW, and 3.9 mW from a 1.8 V supply voltage, respectively.

Abstract:A dual-band direct-conversion RF transceiver for IEEE 802.11 a/b/g WLAN is implemented in 0.18 /spl mu/m CMOS technology with 6 mm/sup 2/ die size and 182 mW power dissipation while transmitting 1 dBm at 5 GHz. The receiver achieves 5 dB NF, -8 dBm IIP3 (high LNA gain), 96 dB total gain, and -31.4 dB EVM. The transmitter achieves 1 dBm and 2.5 dBm linear output power at 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz, respectively, with an EVM less than -31 dB.

Abstract:The IEEE 802.15.4 physical layer (PHY) standard is one of the communication standards with wireless features by providing low-power and low-data rates in wireless personal area network (WPAN) applications. In this paper, an efficient IEEE 802.15.4 digital transceiver hardware architecture is designed using the binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) technique. The transceiver mainly has transmitter and receiver modules along with the error calculation unit. The BPSK modulation and demodulation are designed using a digital frequency synthesizer (DFS). The DFS is used to generate the in-phase (I) and quadrature-phase (Q) signals and also provides better system performance than the conventional voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and look up table (LUT) based memory methods. The differential encoding-decoding mechanism is incorporated to recover the bits effectively and to reduce the hardware complexity. The simulation results are illustrated and used to find the error bits. The design utilizes less chip area, works at 268.2 MHz, and consumes 108 mW of total power. The IEEE 802.15.4 transceiver provides a latency of 3.5 clock cycles and works with a throughput of 76.62 Mbps. The bit error rate (BER) of 2×10-5 is achieved by the proposed digital transceiver and is suitable for real-time applications. The work is compared with existing similar approaches with better improvement in performance parameters.

Abstract:This article presents the hardware software co-optimized implementation of the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol for a Wireless image Sensor Network (WiSN) node SoC. In order to to minimize the power consumption and hardware software implementation cost, a power and cost aware partition scheme is introduced. Then the optimized hardware accelerator is designed and validated with software driver/stack based on TinyOS platform. The IP is integrated and verified in the SoC for wireless image sensor network. The results indicated that, with 0.58 mm(2) area and less than 18 Kbytes driver/stack cost, the hardware/software implementation of IEEE 802.15.4 is better than the most popular implementations in both functionality and code size requirement. Besides, benefited from the co-optimization, the micro controller workload is greatly reduced and the total protocol processing power consumption is only about 3 mW with 12 MHz 8051 processer in typical image transmission scenario, which shows a 40% reduction compared to pure software implementation.
Performance Evaluation and Channel Modeling of IEEE 802.15.4c in Urban Scenarios

Abstract:The IEEE802.15.4 is a low-bit-rate wireless communicate standard that enables global inter-connectivity and inter-operability amongst Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) transceivers from different manufacturers. It is also considered as the PHY and MAC technology for Wireless Sensor Networks, which can be widely used for sensing, gathering and operating information in future smart cities. In Jan. 2009, the 802.15.4c amendment was approved to address the Chinese regulatory changes which have opened new bands for Wireless PAN using within China. However, the urban environments' impacts over its performance in the new band are still not clear. We demonstrate the viability of using IEEE 802.15.4c in urban scenarios by a series of real field experiments and result analysis. Results show that at 4dBm transmission power over 780MHz channel and with typical antenna setups, the effective transmission range is 200 meters in open scenario, 60 and 40 meters in light and heavy traffic scenarios respectively. We also show that the performance is not affected evidently by the mobility of transceivers up to the speed of 80 km/h. The most important performance factors are the availability of line-of-sight between sender and receiver in urban scenarios. We also use the famous Rappaport channel model for field experimental data fitting, and show that the model is valid even with moving massive reflectors. The empirical data and model fitting will benefit upper layer protocol design based on 802.15.4c in China in the future.

Abstract:This paper presented a configurable low power chip supporting enhanced 802.15.4 standard. Compared with previous works, we adopted a flexible architecture ranging from 125kbps to 500kbps under different requirements. A differential non-coherent demodulator is implemented to reduce the power consumption. The chip had been fabricated in SMIC 0.13um CMOS process, and measured results verified the design specification.

Abstract:In this paper, a baseband transceiver is proposed for IEEE 802.15.4 and for one 2.4G RFID protocol. This transceiver supports OQPSK with direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS), MSK without spread spectrum, and DBPSK with DSSS. In this design, those three demodulations share most of their hardware blocks to reduce area and power consumption. This baseband transceiver is part of a multi-mode and multi-band SoC for medical monitoring. This design is verified on FPGA and finally fabricated in 0.18um CMOS process with an integrated RF front-end. The area of baseband is 1.7mm2.

Abstract:As infrared transmission has the advantages of wide bandwidth, immunity to radio interference, high security and license-free, it is an attractive alternative to radio for wireless local area networks (LAN). The design of an interface between the high-speed optical wireless transceiver (>20Mbps) and the optical wireless LAN is presented in this paper. We transplant the EEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) layer protocol to our system, define and implement a new physical (PHY) layer management module. This management module can also provide us an experimental platform to analyze the performance of the modulation schemes, such as L-PPM, PIM, DH-PIM, etc. Due to its characteristics of flexibility, simplicity and low cost, the management module is a good choice for the indoor optical wireless LAN's.

Abstract:The IEEE 802.15.4 standard, which supports lowcost communications, has been applied in a variety of wireless networks. Developing accurate analytical models for the IEEE 802.15.4 medium access control (MAC) protocol is critical for the design and performance evaluation of such networks. Periodic traffic is a common traffic pattern generated in many practical application scenarios, for which most existing analytical models assuming either saturated or random network traffic patterns become inapplicable. In this paper, we develop an accurate and scalable analytical model to analyze the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC protocol with the periodic traffic. Our model can accurately capture the protocol stochastic behavior in each period in scenarios such as with or without retransmissions and with single clear channel assessment (CCA) or double CCAs. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate the proposed model by both transient and aggregate performance evaluations, and the results show that the model captures MAC behavior with periodic traffic accurately. We also discuss about extending the proposed model to account for heterogeneous scenarios and the hidden node problem.

Abstract:A single-chip low-power transceiver IC operating in the 2.4 GHz ISM band is presented. Designed in 0.18 μm CMOS, the transceiver system employs direct-conversion architecture for both the receiver and transmitter to realize a fully integrated wireless LAN product. A sigma-delta (ΣΔ) fractional-N frequency synthesizer provides on-chip quadrature local oscillator frequency. Measurement results show that the receiver achieves a maximum gain of 81 dB and a noise figure of 8.2 dB, the transmitter has maximum output power of –3.4 dBm and RMS EVM of 6.8%. Power dissipation of the transceiver is 74 mW in the receiving mode and 81 mW in the transmitting mode under a supply voltage of 1.8 V, including 30 mW consumed by the frequency synthesizer. The total chip area with pads is 2.7 × 4.2 mm2.
