Abstract:The Al-11.0Mg-2.6Si-4.0Zn-0.6Mn (wt%) alloy is a new developed high strength die cast alloy which can be used for structural parts in the automotive and aerospace industry. In this study, the effect of various amount of Ti on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Al-11.0Mg-2.6Si-4.0Zn-0.6Mn (wt%) alloy under as-cast and T6 heat treatment conditions are investigated. The addition of Ti results in the formation of Al3Ti intermetallic phase, and the volume fraction and forming temperature increases with the increase of titanium content. With 0.1wt% Ti addition, the best mechanical properties of the alloy. The yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation reach up to 350 MPa, 440 MPa and 3.29% respectively after heat treatment. Titanium content should be controlled below 0.10%.

Abstract:This article introduced the current research progress and theoretical basis of designing the twin induced plasticity (TWIP)/transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) metastable beta titanium alloys, and summarized beta-grain sizes, yield strength and work hardening capability of the double twined {332}<113> and {112}<111> metastable beta titanium alloys. The application and limitation of combination times (Bo)-d electron orbit energy level (Md) diagram in the design of multi-component titanium alloys were further discussed, especially the effect of different secondary phases (alpha-phase and omega-phase) on the stability of the matrix beta-phase. The factors that influence the deformation mechanisms of TWIP/TRIP metastable beta titanium alloys are emphasized in terms of the matrix beta phase stability, precipitated phases, beta-grain sizes and crystallographic orientations. And the current deficiencies of this field were analyzed. Furthermore, the effect of double twinning mechanisms on the mechanical properties of titanium alloys was briefly discussed as well. Finally, by summarizing the research progress and related issues, this article conveyed the new insights for the development of high-strength and tough titanium alloys.

Abstract:The application of commercially pure titanium (CP–Ti) has long been limited by its insufficient strength and plastic instability. However, strength enhancement typically comes at the expense of ductility since the two important mechanical properties are often mutually exclusive. In the present work, multi-element Fe–Cr–Ni–Mo in the form of 316L steel was added into CP-Ti by additive manufacturing (AM), so as to realize the simultaneous enhancement of strength and uniform ductility. The localized homogenization of CP-Ti and 316L alloy melts during laser melting deposition produced the microstructure comprised of basket-weave ɑ laths, discontinuous ɑGB, and retained β phases, which endowed Ti-1.35Fe-0.36Cr-0.24Ni-0.05Mo alloy with related higher ultimate tensile strength (635 MPa) and larger uniform ductility (12%). This approach could provide guidance for designing high-performance metal materials starting with elements powder through additive manufacturing.

Abstract:The effects of alloying elements on crystal structure, microstructure and properties of TiAl alloys were analyzed. β phase was introduced at elevated temperature to improve the hot-workability by adding high alloying element (like high Nb, V, Cr, Mn). A small amount of additions (like C, B, rare earth) improved the properties of TiAl alloys through the effects of refinement and precipitations. Favorite microstructures could be obtained by various new approaches of heat treatment and thermo-mechanical treatment. Forming technologies and applications of TiAl alloys in recent years were summed up. And the development tendency was prospected.

Abstract:Titanium alloys have been widely used in fields such as medicine and marine, because of their excellent corrosion resistance. In this paper, the methods and mechanisms of improving the corrosion properties of titanium alloys by alloying are reviewed. The corrosion properties of titanium alloys can be enhanced by adding specific alloying elements, which can refine the structure, and produce a new phase which has better corrosion resistance. The addition of alloying elements such as Nb and Zr can also lead to the formation of oxides, which form passive films together with titanium oxides. The addition of certain alloying elements can enhance the stability of the passive film, thereby improving corrosion properties. The comprehensive considerations of the interactions between the alloy matrix and elements, the influences of alloy elements on the microstructure and passive films of titanium alloys, and the formations of new phases are essential when selecting alloy elements to enhance the corrosion properties of titanium alloys. The future development trends of integrating artificial intelligence methods into material design and alloying to enhance material properties are anticipated.

Abstract:In recent years, material design approach is being changed from trial and error experiments to integrated calculation based on computational models in synergy with the rapid development of materials genome initiative (MGI) and integrated computational materials engineering (ICME). High specific strength, outstanding corrosion resistance and good fatigue properties make titanium alloys widely used as structural material for aerospace and implants for biomedical area. This paper reviews the development history and alloying methodology of beta titanium alloys. The near beta alloys with addition of multi elements such as Al, Zr, Sn, Mo, V, Cr and Fe is becoming more and more attractive. Several design approaches were summarized in this paper, including Mo equivalent method, e/a method and "cluster-plus-glue-atom" model based on empirical methodology, and some method based on computational thermodynamics or first principles. Finally, the integrated calculation model of computational design used for hierarchically structured materials was discussed in detail and the potential application of this approach in titanium alloy design was analyzed.
Research status and development trend of high-strength β titanium alloys

Abstract:β-Ti alloys have been used in many military/commercial aircraft since 1950s. Their high specific strength, good corrosion resistance, and high formability meet the special requirement of certain structures. Despite a further understanding of the relationship among chemistry, processing, and microstructure, as well as the expanding of performance data base, there is some stagnation in commercialization of new alloys over the past 20 years. This paper reviews the development and applications of β-Ti alloys, and summarizes the important processing parameters for microstructure control. The widely used 5 kinds of high-strength β-Ti alloys are discussed based on their processing-microstructure-property relationship. From the cost and performance perspectives, the challenges and opportunities of β-Ti alloys are identified. Future research will be focused on alloy compositions with more robust processing widows and better performance matching. The integrated computational materials design technology will be a prospect to accelerate the workflow development of chemistry-processing- microstructure-performance for high strength β-Ti alloys.

Abstract:Titanium alloys are acclaimed for their remarkable biocompatibility, high specific strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and stable performance in high and low temperatures. These characteristics render them invaluable in a multitude of sectors, including biomedicine, shipbuilding, aerospace, and daily life. According to the different phases, the alloys can be broadly categorized into α-titanium and β-titanium, and these alloys demonstrate unique properties shaped by their respective phases. The hexagonal close-packed structure of α-titanium alloys is notably associated with superior high-temperature creep resistance but limited plasticity. Conversely, the body-centered cubic structure of β-titanium alloys contributes to enhanced slip and greater plasticity. To optimize these alloys for specific industrial applications, alloy strengthening is often necessary to meet diverse environmental and operational demands. The impact of various processing techniques on the microstructure and metal characteristics of titanium alloys is reviewed and discussed in this research. This article systematically analyzes the effects of machining, shot peening, and surface heat treatment methods, including surface quenching, carburizing, and nitriding, on the structure and characteristics of titanium alloys. This research is arranged and categorized into three categories based on the methods of processing and treatment: general heat treatment, thermochemical treatment, and machining. The results of a large number of studies show that surface treatment can significantly improve the hardness and friction mechanical properties of titanium alloys. At present, a single treatment method is often insufficient. Therefore, composite treatment methods combining multiple treatment techniques are expected to be more widely used in the future. The authors provide an overview of titanium alloy modification methods in recent years with the aim of assisting and promoting further research in the very important and promising direction of multi-technology composite treatment.

Abstract:Titanium alloys are irreplaceable important materials in aerospace and other fields. However, the insufficient friction and wear properties limit their applications under wider conditions. The traditional understanding and new research progress on the friction and wear properties of titanium alloys were introduced. The research results on the wear mechanism and friction and wear properties of titanium alloys were reviewed. Three common surface treatment methods including surface modification technology, surface alloying technology and surface coating technology for improving the friction and wear properties of titanium alloys were summarized. The current existing problems in wear research and performance improvement of titanium alloys and the research direction of improving wear resistance of titanium alloys were pointed out. Abstract:Metastable beta titanium alloy has excellent overall properties, including low density, high specific strength, and good forming ability. Therefore, it has been successfully used to replace traditional high-strength steels in aerospace structural components with extremely-high strength requirements, resulting in significant structural weight reduction effects and greatly improved aircraft performance. The main method for preparing high-strength metastable beta titanium alloy structural components is the combination of hot forming technology and heat treatment. The prerequisite for formulating and optimizing the processes is a thorough understanding of the alloy.. s deformation mechanism, followed by integrated control of the microstructure and properties of the components. Meanwhile, elucidating the relationship between the high-strength metastable beta titanium alloy.. s deformation mechanism and its micromechanical properties will aid in the development of new alloys to meet the needs of aircraft for higher performance materials. Therefore, in this article, the deformation mechanism of the high-strength metastable beta titanium alloy and its microstructure control methods was focused on and discussed, and first summarizes the research progress of the plastic deformation mechanism at room temperature, expounds the factors affecting the stability of the beta matrix and the corresponding deformation mechanism evolution, analogizes the comprehensive influence of a phase characteristics on dislocation movement and the resulting mechanical performance. Furthermore, this article summarizes the hot deformation behavior and mechanism of a high-strength metastable beta titanium alloy, analyzes the alloy.. s microstructure evolution and deformation mechanism in different phase regions and deformation stages, and discusses the alloy.. s work hardening and softening behaviors during hot deformation. Strengthening effects of Al element on strength and impact toughness in titanium alloy

Abstract:Pure Ti and binary Ti-6Al alloy have been employed as the investigated targets of our research. The strengthening effects of Al element on strength and impact toughness in titanium alloy were systematically investigated. The experimental results indicated that the addition of Al element significantly improved the tensile strength while deteriorating the plasticity and impact toughness. Analysis of deformation mechanisms indicated that addition of Al element strongly inhibited the dislocation movement and deformation twinning in titanium alloy. The theoretical results demonstrated that the dissolution of Al atoms reset the atomic bond configurations and electronic structures of the α-Ti lattice. Therefore, the lattice resistance to dislocation nucleation and dislocation gliding was significantly improved which led to the strong strengthening effect of Al element in α-Ti. The lattice resistance to the shearing atomic motion of deformation twinning was also improved due to the dissolution of Al atoms. Moreover, the strengthening of Al element was revealed at the electronic level by employing the empirical electron theory (EET) of solids and molecules. The strengthening effects of Al element in titanium was also quantitatively evaluated according to the valence electron structures (VES) parameters. A prediction model for the tensile strength of α-type Ti- x Al alloys was proposed based on the quantitative strengthening of Al element. The high accuracy of the prediction model for strength of Ti- x Al alloy was verified by the average error (3.58%) between the computational strength and experimental results.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing (AM) is an innovative technology that creates objects with a complex geometry layer-by-layer, and it has rapidly prospered in manufacturing metallic parts for structural and functional applications. Recent literatures have investigated the effect of different AM technologies on the microstructure evolution of titanium alloys. However, metal AM has mostly been regarded only as a shaping technology for near-net-shape manufacturing. A huge advantage of AM in alloy design and treatments has been largely overlooked at the present time. In this paper, we systematically reviewed the interaction of AM processes and different Ti-alloys, as well as the possible ways for mechanical property enhancements. On the one hand, the complex thermal histories caused by AM influence the phase transformation of Ti-alloys. On the other hand, the unique thermal and processing features of AM provide ways and opportunities to design new Ti-alloys with unachievable microstructures and properties by conventional methods. The aim of this paper is thus to provide a new perspective on the relationship between the AM process and alloy design, which is to consider AM as an irreplaceable material treating and design method. Only an integrated consideration of both AM process and alloy design can successfully achieve materials with superior properties for applications in the future industries.

Abstract:The thermal oxidation treatment can improve the wear resistance, corrosion resistance and biological activity of medical titanium alloy and provides new hope for the development of the long lifetime artificial joints. The coating growth mechanism and process parameters optimization of thermally oxidized titanium alloy were studied based on our research results. Then, the research progress on the improvement of wear resistance, corrosion resistance and biological activity of thermally oxidized biomedical titanium alloy was reviewed. Finally, the failure mechanism and development trend were summarized and prospected.

Abstract:Owing to excellent high-temperature mechanical properties, i.e., high heat resistance, high strength, and high corrosion resistance, Ti alloys can be widely used as structural components, such as blades and wafers, in aero-engines. Due to the complex shapes, however, it is difficult to fabricate these components via traditional casting or plastic forming. It has been proved that additive manufacturing (AM) is an effective method of manufacturing such complex components. In this study, four main additive manufacturing processes for Ti alloy components were reviewed, including laser powder bed melting (SLM), electron beam powder bed melting (EBM), wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), and cold spraying additive manufacturing (CSAM). Meanwhile, the technological process and mechanical properties at high temperature were summarized. It is proposed that the additive manufacturing of titanium alloys follows a progressive path comprising four key developmental stages and research directions: investigating printing mechanisms, optimizing process parameters, in situ addition of trace elements, and layered material design. It is crucial to consider the development stage of each specific additive manufacturing process in order to select appropriate research directions. Moreover, the corresponding post-treatment was also analyzed to tailor the microstructure and high-temperature mechanical properties of AMed Ti alloys. Thereafter, to improve the mechanical properties of the product, it is necessary to match the post-treatment method with an appropriate additive manufacturing process. The additive manufacturing and the following post-treatment are expected to gradually meet the high-temperature mechanical requirements of all kinds of high-temperature structural components of Ti alloys.

Review on Development of Key Technologies in Plastic Forming of Titanium Alloy

Abstract:Development of key technologies in plastic forming of titanium alloys is reviewed, focusing on two essentially important aspects, that is, shape forming and microstructure control. Force-saving plastic forming technologies for shape forming are discussed on their applications in manufacturing large-scale complex-shaped titanium components. Some samples of isothermal forming and continuous/intermittent local loading forming of titanium components are presented and discussed. Moreover, springback control and preform optimization are discussed as the important aspects of precision forming technology, and fracture control and underfill control approaches are discussed as aspects of defects control technology as well. In review of microstructure control technologies, mechanism and rules of microstructure evolution, for instance, the evolutions of texture and morphology, are discussed at first, and then several representative numerical modeling approaches, such as internal variables modeling, crystal plasticity modeling and cellular automata modeling, are discussed. In the end, trends, challenges and developments in plastic forming of titanium alloy are presented.

Abstract:This paper reports the results of an ongoing research which was set up to investigate the effect of microstructures on the activity of different deformation mechanisms and the resulting mechanical behavior in Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al alloy. Various microstructures were established by different heat treatments. Depending on the microstructures, obvious differences in the mechanical properties of this alloy were obtained. It is shown that globular a phase (formed in alpha + beta phase field solution treatment conditions) and acicular a phase (formed in beta+(alpha + beta) phase field solution treatment conditions) have different effects on mechanical property. In aging conditions, the microstructure and mechanical property do not change apparently with the aging time. Typical deformation microstructure in a phase is always the {10 (1) over bar1} <(1) over bar 012 > type twin. With the decrease of beta phase stability, the deformation mechanism of beta phase varies from {112}< 111 > type twin to stress induced martensitic transformation. The microstructure of the a phase and beta phase has a great influence on the fractographic morphology. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A near α Ti-1100 alloys with TiC (1%vol) ceramic particles reinforcement were fabricated. The ingots were breakdown at 1150 °C. The βt temperature of this material was examined by metallographic method. The ingots after breakdown were forged with various thermo-mechanical processing parameters. According to the deformation performed in β phase field, α+β phase field, or upper α phase field, four varieties hot deformation are classified, i.e. deformation in β phase field, deformation started in β phase field and finished in α+β phase field, deformation in α+β phase field and deformation in upper α phase field. The characters of microstructure evolution are different in the four varieties deformation process. The microstructure evolutions during four varieties deformation process were discussed comprehensively. The discussion will be intended to be helpful in understanding the process of microstructures evolution and microstructures control of near α titanium alloys during various thermo-mechanical processing. Tensile tests after various hot deformations were conducted at room temperature.

Abstract:<p>Titanium alloys (Ti-alloys) have complicated multiscale hierarchical structures that enabled a variety of excellent mechanical properties, such as strength, ductility, fatigue and creep resistance etc. But how are the microstructures formed under different conditions, and what are the inter-dependencies between the properties and various microstructures are not easy to reveal solely by experiments. In the last two decades, multiscale modeling and simulation have been carried out, and promoted our understanding of the microstructure formation and their deformation mechanisms. In the present paper, recent progresses are reviewed and future trends analyzed, on the simulation of microstructure evolution in Ti-alloys and how these are combined with experimental characterization and verification, to reveal the controlling factor and hidden mechanism under various deformation/transformation conditions; and to promote the optimization of thermo-mechanical processing. It is recognized that, future computations should pay more attention to the bottleneck problems in the design and application of Ti-alloys and play a more important role in identifying specific controlling factors and revealing the relevant working mechanisms in more complicated process, such as thermo-mechanical processing, powder metallurgy or additive manufacturing. In addition, artificial intelligence (AI) may assist the screening of new materials. These efforts may accelerate the development and application of new alloys, and at lower cost, especially for Ti-alloys in aero/space engine satisfying multiple performance requirements such as strength, toughness, creep resistance, fatigue life and other properties.</p>

Abstract:The effects of alloying additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cast Ti alloys based on Ti-6Al-4V were systematically investigated through a combination of thermodynamic calculations and experimental verifications. New cast titanium alloys with significantly improved properties were developed through combining thermodynamic calculations and physical metallurgy principles, which achieve an optimum combination of high strength and high ductility at both room and elevated temperatures. Our analysis indicates that the improved strength is due mainly to the α colony and lath size refinement induced by both macro- and micro-alloying of Cr, Fe, B and C elements, whereas the mechanisms for such property optimization include: (1) an increased volume fraction of ductile β phase in the cast state, (2) a refined α colony and lath size by the Cr, Fe, B and C alloying additions, and (3) an enhanced grain-boundary cohesion and refined grain size of prior-β grains induced by proper amount of B additions. The newly developed cast Ti alloys with substantially enhanced mechanical properties for engineering applications.
