Abstract:The traditional English vocabulary teaching model in higher vocational education has failed to actually improve students’application ability in vocabulary because it takes words as the discrete components of language which can be taught isolatedly. This has made it in urgent need of pedagogical reform. Text linguistics takes text as the basic unit of lan-guage and pays great attention to the textual context of language use and the matching relationship between the forms and functions of words. To carry out vocabulary teaching within such a theoretical framework may spare English vocabulary teaching in higher vocational education from its isolated, de-contextual treatment of vocabulary and may provide insightful enlightenment for its improvement.

Abstract:This study intends to compare the vocabulary learning strategies between high-achievers and low-achievers in junior high schools, and thus to explore effective vocabulary learning strategies to provide suggestions for English vocabulary teaching and learning practice. It is found out that high-achievers apply English vocabulary learning strategies more frequently than low-achieving students do. More specifically, in terms of meta-cognitive strategies, low-achievers use more pre-planning strategies, while high-achievers apply more selective attention strategies. For cognitive strategies, both high-achievers and low-achievers tend to use repetition strategies. Achievers are better at categorizing what they have learnt than low-achievers. For affective strategies, low-achievers apply reference books strategies most frequently and neither type of students uses authentic material strategies very often. Students’ beliefs, habits and attitudes towards vocabulary learning affect the application of strategies to some extent. High-achievers are better at utilizing the environment and even creating opportunities for English communication than underachievers. In addition, high-achievers have stronger learning motivation and they are also better at setting and achieving goals than low-achievers.

Abstract:: This study explores strategies to enhance vocabulary acquisition among ESL beginners, focusing on junior high school students in China. Vocabulary is critical for language proficiency, but students often struggle with memorizing new words due to limited exposure and the cognitive need to learn new languages. The research compares deliberate learning methods, such as rote memorization and flashcards, with incidental learning through context-rich activities like reading and listening. Deliberate learning is efficient for short-term gains but may not ensure long-term retention, whereas incidental learning will promote deeper integration of vocabulary over time. This study proposes a blended approach that combines two methods to maximize efficiency. Additionally, it highlights the importance of using multimedia tools and contextual learning to reinforce new vocabulary and demonstrate its practical applications. By presenting words in relevant contexts and participating in multimedia, students can better grasp and memorize new vocabulary, thereby improving their language performance. This study provides practical insights for ESL educators. It advocates a balanced teaching strategy to enhance vocabulary acquisition and support the overall language development of middle school students.

Abstract:Vocabulary plays a crucial role in the development of skills in a second language, with comprehending word meanings emerging as a key objective in the language acquisition process. An effective approach to enriching second language vocabulary knowledge involves providing learners with a variety of vocabulary learning methods. This research aimed to investigate the preferred vocabulary learning methods of students majoring in English. Questionnaires based on Schmitt's (1997) vocabulary learning strategy taxonomies were distributed to collect quantitative data. 120 English-majored students at a private university in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam participated in this study. The result showed that methods for vocabulary learning for discovery and consolidation were preferred by English-majored students including “using bilingual dictionary”, “guessing the meaning of new words through context, “Asking classmates for the meaning of a new word”, “learning vocabulary from social networking platforms (Facebook, TikTok, Instagram,...), “learning the spelling of a word, “making a mental picture of a situation in which the word might be used”, “taking notes newly learned words in class”, written repetition”, and practicing vocabulary by conversing with other people in English”.

Abstract:English teachers at junior middle schools often employ traditional vocabulary teaching techniques such as L1 equivalents, word lists, pictures, and word formation rules. They reinforce the students' retention of vocabulary by asking them to read aloud the words repeatedly and copy the new words as homework. Abstract:Vocabulary is the basic material of modern language, without which language will completely lose its practical meaning. In modern English language learning, vocabulary is one of the most important and basic language skills that students need to learn and master. Without abundant vocabulary, it is difficult for students to fully develop the five English skills. Therefore, vocabulary learning occupies an indispensable and important position in English learning. However, in the traditional English classroom, vocabulary teaching is extremely boring for students which resulting in low learning efficiency of students and difficult to improve classroom efficiency. Abstract:Learners' thesauri do not simply offer an inventory of semantically related lexical items but explicate their nuances and furnish users with rich syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic information. Adopting the theoretical framework of valency, this study examines the distinctive features of two English learners' thesauri, the Oxford Learner's Thesaurus: A Dictionary of Synonyms (OLT) and the Longman Language Activator (LLA). Furthermore, the study, supported by learner corpus evidence, empirically assesses the usefulness of OLT and LLA in Chinese learners' writing. The results demonstrate that learners' thesauri can generally meet the practical needs of users in writing through providing a range of synonyms and syntactic patterns, including abundant information on semantic collocations, and offering rich pragmatic information regarding registers and emotive variables. The results also show some defects in OLT and LLA, such as their failure to present specific syntactic patterns, including those frequently used in Chinese learners' compositions. It is then suggested that the compilation of learners' thesauri draw upon the ways in which lexical information is presented in the English Valency Dictionary, and that learner corpora and native speaker corpora be combined to improve their usefulness.

Abstract:English has become the most widely spoken language in the world, and memorizing vocabulary is a fundamental step in acquiring this language. Many English as a foreign language (EFL)/English as a second language (ESL) learners have difficulty remembering new words, so vocabulary learning strategies are studied globally. This literature review examined international research across ages and discussed three learning strategies: the keyword method, pictorial association, and the mind-mapping method. Results suggested that the three learning strategies effectively improved students vocabulary recall and retention, and learning strategies help EFL/ESL learners with vocabulary studies.

Abstract:Many instructors have struggled for a long time with the issue of how to teach language effectively. These techniques include generating student curiosity and interest, employing part-of-speech conversion, using syntactic analysis, formative assessment, and using the game method after briefly reviewing the history of the evolution of English teaching methods. Using this method, students' vocabulary mastery has increased dramatically, an essential and fundamental component of teaching English. Thus, teaching vocabulary efficiently and adequately will significantly help improve general English education. The result of this research is that the implementation of this strategy is efficient in terms of student learning. vocabulary accumulation. Like the bricks that make up a house, vocabulary is the foundation and most important element of teaching English. If students have extensive vocabulary storage, it will be very helpful for English education in general. As a result, the authors of this paper believe that this essay will offer useful answers to the longstanding problem of teaching language effectively and efficiently. Abstract:The application and development of vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) lead to acquiring a more extensive vocabulary size and better performance in language acquisition. Students with different proficiencies might employ various VLS in their language learning process. This study aims to describe and analyze the vocabulary learning strategy used by low-frequency-word level students identified by vocabulary size test they took previously. This study adopted mix-method research by using questionnaires and interviews. The participants were university students of international programs majoring in industrial engineering, civil engineering, and business and economics. The students were identified in low-frequency-word level who were considered able to understand wide reading and specialized study. The findings showed that low-frequency-word level students primarily used dictionary, guessing, and activation strategies. The social strategy was identified as another alternative strategy to learn vocabulary. Google Translate was the most popular translating tool due to its practicality. Guessing meaning strategy was done when failing to find the desired words using an online translation machine. Moreover, the students used social media as the platform to implement the activation strategy. Meanwhile, note-taking, rehearsal, metacognitive strategies belong to the least used VLS as the students are not into intentional vocabulary learning.

Abstract:This study delves into the instructional strategies employed by elementary language teachers for vocabulary teaching. Through in-depth interviews with five experienced educators, their approaches, challenges, and insights concerning vocabulary development were closely examined. The findings underscore the pivotal role of intentional and continuous word exposure in effective vocabulary instruction. The study identifies various strategies encompassing captivating games, collaborative group activities, visual aids such as graphic organizers, images, and labels, alongside consistent repetition of word sets. These techniques collectively bolster reading comprehension, writing proficiency, and oral communication skills among young learners. The research underscores the significance of cultivating dynamic and interactive learning settings that facilitate meaningful and consistent encounters with new vocabulary. The insights gleaned from this investigation contribute to the ongoing endeavor of refining vocabulary instruction methods, with the ultimate aim of fostering academic achievement and language progression in students. The study advocates for further exploration and application of these strategies to fully harness the benefits of vocabulary exposure in language teaching and learning. Abstract:One of the foremost challenges encountered by students of foreign languages in the course of acquiring a foreign language is the acquisition of vocabulary. The significance of vocabulary in language acquisition has been acknowledged, as inadequate vocabulary proficiency among learners can impede their progress in acquiring a second language. The present investigation employed Schmitt's (2000) taxonomy of Vocabulary Learning Strategies, which encompasses five distinct categories of strategies, namely "determination", "social", "memory", "cognitive", in addition to meta-cognitive" methods. The primary objective of this study is to analyze and explore the implementation of contemporary techniques for instructing and acquiring vocabulary across students that study foreign language in diverse undergraduate courses. The research goals prompted the selection of a quantitative analysis design as the optimal approach to comprehensively examine the utilization of VLS among the targeted student population. This research employed a questionnaire to examine the circumstances surrounding the acquisition of foreign language vocabulary among an aggregate of 230 undergraduate students. Specifically, the study sought to elucidate the participants' attitudes towards vocabulary learning as well as their employment of learning strategies. The participants for the study were chosen using a randomized method, and the survey was conducted via an online platform. Additionally, upon conducting a statistical evaluation on the results, it was discovered that the metacognitive strategy was highest utilized strategy, with the greatest frequency, while the cognitive strategy was utilized least frequently. The findings suggest that this research's respondents would benefit from additional instruction in Vocabulary Learning Strategies in order to enhance their proficiency with various types of foreign language vocabularies. It is imperative to integrate efficacious strategies for both the acquisition and instruction of vocabulary into the vocabulary learning process of learners.

Abstract:With the continuous development of globalization, English has become one of the important languages of China and international communication, playing an important role in our life. English has always been the traditional main subject of education at all levels in China, whether primary school, middle school, high school and university, all occupy a pivotal position. And in middle school education, English performance can affect the situation of admission, and English is also a subject with a huge gap. Middle school is a key period to learn English. How should we learn English well? As we all know, the important condition for learning English well is vocabulary. Only by mastering vocabulary can we learn English well. Vocabulary is the basis of learning English well. However, from the current situation of junior high school students learning vocabulary, it is not optimistic, and students face many difficulties to master vocabulary. The main difficulties we have include: firstly, students, only have single memory method and insufficient memory s in vocabulary memory skills, which make them difficult to master the vocabulary. secondly, the traditional classroom teaching approach is single, boring and inefficient; thirdly, many teachers ignore thinking and interest cultivation, and students can only memorize words and phrases, difficult to use flexibly in life, so that students often lack interest in vocabulary, and will be afraid when they face with vocabulary. we can’t learn English well in such a situation. Now, it is a common challenge for teachers and students to change the situation at present. In order that students can better master vocabulary, for this reason, teachers can find more appropriate teaching methods to change the dilemma they face. With the further research on the theories of vocabulary teaching, we understand some relevant teaching approaches and theories gradually, such as situational language teaching (SLT). Due to introduction of SLT, it has played a great influence in China’s basic education and made great progress in China’s education. Although the current situational teaching method is often used in English teaching, it has not always been applied to vocabulary teaching. It is unclear whether SLT is suitable for vocabulary teaching and can improve the efficiency of vocabulary teaching and change the current situation. Therefore, this article studies whether SLT is applicable to English vocabulary teaching in middle schools and verifies whether it is effective. However, SLT through the data analysis of post-trial test and questionnaire is suitable and feasible. By creating a real situation, let the students experience the true feelings, and then master the vocabulary, improve the interest in learning, improve the classroom efficiency. On English Vocabulary Learning Strategies for English Majors at Early Stage

Abstract:This paper employs a quantitative analysis of a questionnaire and a vocabulary test, centering on how the English majors make use of vocabulary learning strategies at their early stage of study. The result shows that the students use rather frequently all the cognitive strategies, but not the metacognitive ones. Both successful and unsuccessful learners use most of the strategies.Moreover, 9 strategies are found in positive relation with the learners' achievement of cognitive vocabulary, and 3 strategies with learners' achievement of good mastery of vocabulary. In contrast, inflexible recitation and translation strategies are in negative relation with the learners' achievement of both cognitive and good mastery of vocabulary.

Abstract:The purpose of this quasi‐experimental study was to compare the effectiveness of reading plus vocabulary‐enhancement activities (RV) and narrow reading (NR)— repeated reading thematically related articles—on vocabulary acquisition and retention among English as a foreign language (EFL) secondary school students. Twenty‐five third‐year male students with intermediate‐level English proficiency participated in each instructional treatment 2 hr per week for five weeks. The RV group read selected texts and practiced various vocabulary exercises. The NR group read thematically related supplemental materials besides the selected texts. A Chinese version of the modified Vocabulary Knowledge Scale was employed to assess students' knowledge of 50 vocabulary items. The results show that the RV group demonstrated significantly more knowledge about the target vocabulary than the NR group on the acquisition and retention tests. The researcher concludes that reading plus focused vocabulary exercises are more effective and efficient than the narrow reading approach in enhancing target vocabulary acquisition and retention among EFL secondary students.

Abstract:Vocabulary is the basic unit of language. Without vocabulary, there will be no language materials and grammar, let alone com munication. Based on the Situational Language Teaching method, taking junior college students as majors, a teaching experiment was car ried out to explore the effectiveness of the Situational Language Teaching method in improving students'vocabulary acquisition ability. The results show that the application of SLT in vocabulary teaching can improve students’vocabulary acquisition ability.

Abstract:Under the background of quality education reform, aesthetic education, as a crucial part of people’s all-round development, has its unique value. Thus, aesthetic education has become more important and should be integrated into teaching fully. In English teaching, helping students experience the beauty of speech is one of the ways to achieve it. Meanwhile, relevant requirements have been stipulated in Ordinary High School English Curriculum Standards (2017 edition 2020 revision). Vocabulary teaching strategies are systematic behaviors that seek to maximize vocabulary teaching effectiveness under the guidance of teachers’ cognition of certain teaching philosophies and teaching situations. It is so crucial for vocabulary teaching that aesthetic education should be integrated into it. Therefore, this research attempts to propose vocabulary teaching strategies based on aesthetic choices. These strategies include: connecting the vowels closely to teach the pronunciation and spelling of vocabulary based on the spelling rules; using phonetic rhetoric in sentence construction to make it more readable and rhythmic; using figures of speech in sentence construction to give learners a deeper impression; making example sentence symmetric, succinct, and simple; and make vocabulary teaching a logical and systematic whole.

Abstract:We aimed to establish the vocabulary learning strategies used by Chinese university learners of English and the relationship between their strategies and outcomes in learning English. We asked 850 sophomore non‐English majors at Beijing Normal University to complete a vocabulary learning questionnaire. We correlated replies to the questionnaire with results on a vocabulary size test and on the College English Test (CETBAND2). Participants reported using a wide variety of vocabulary learning strategies. In a multiple regression analysis, Self‐Initiation and Selective Attention, two metacognitive strategies, emerged as positive predictors of CETBAND2 scores. Contextual guessing, skillful use of dictionaries, note‐taking, paying attention to word formation, contextual encoding, and activation of newly learned words also positively correlated with the two test scores. However, visual repetition of new words was the strongest negative predictor of both vocabulary size and general proficiency. Furthermore, strategies aiming at vocabulary retention only related more to vocabulary size than to English proficiency. We identified 5 approaches to learning. These strategy combinations, rather than individual strategies, may have made the difference in these people's learning.
