More on the Licensing Conditions of the Y+henyou +X Construction

Abstract:A previous study of the + henyou + X construction proposes that the licensing condition of X is Abstractness'.However,Abstractness is too rough-grained in view that there are many nominal expressions with Abstract meanings cannot be the candidate values of X.We propose attributes of generalization and attributes of stipulation as two fine-grained theoretical concepts to account for the licensing conditions of the construction at issue.The research on the construction has its theoretical significances: First,the alternation between Y+henyou+X and +you + hen + Z + X constitute an instance of the so-called Baker's paradox.A further understanding of the licensing condition of X+henyou Y contributes to the finding of the final solutions to the paradox.Second,you + X is reanalyzed semantically,constituting a syntactic platform for the formation of new words under the mechanism of diachronic lexicalization.
