Abstract:A heterobimetallic complex [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgLiCl(THF)]2 (1) supported by a dianionic double layer nitrogen-phosphorus ligand was synthesized by the reaction of H2L1 (H2L1 = MeN(CH2CH2NHPiPr)2) with MgCl2 in the presence of n-BuLi. Reactions of complex 1 with 2 equivalents of CuI, AgI and AuCl·SMe2 led to the formation of heterobimetallic clusters [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgCuI]2 (2), [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgAgI]2 (3) and [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgAuCl]2 (4), respectively. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis revealed that these complexes are dimers, which are composed of two [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2Mg] units connected by coinage metals (i.e., Cu, Ag, and Au). The reactivity of 1 was further investigated and it was found that complex 1 could react with 4 equivalents of MeI, giving a complex [CH3N(CH2CH2NPiPr2Me)2MgI]+[I]- (5), which can be viewed as a magnesium complex supported by a neutral double layer nitrogen-phosphorus ligand (CH3N(CH2CH2NPiPr2Me)2). Complex 1 could also react with 2 equivalents of NaNH2, leading to the isolation of an amido anion bridged magnesium-sodium heterobimetallic cluster [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgNaNH2]2 (6).

Abstract:In the title complex, [Mg(C13H10NO2)(2)(C6H6N4S2)(H2O)(2)], the Mg-II ion is coordinated by two 2-anilinobenzoate anions, two water molecules and an 2-anilinobenzoate molecule in a distorted octahedral geometry. The two thiazole rings in the diaminobithiazole molecule are nearly coplanar, with a dihedral angle of 3.88 (17)degrees. The two benzene rings in each 2-anilinobenzoate anion are twisted with respect to each other, the dihedral angles being 56.32 (12) and 45.68 (12)degrees in the two anions.

Abstract:The crystal structure of the complex tris(benzimidazole)iminonodiacetato(2-)cadmium (II) dihydrate, (BZIM)(3)(IDA)Cd center dot 2H(2)O, was determined by single-crystal X-ray methods. The Cd(II) ion assumes distorted octahedral coordination geometry formed by three benzimidazole molecules and in iminodiacetate dianion. The dianion chelates Cd(II) as a terdentate in the facial configuration. Weak intermolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions exist between neighboring benzimidazole rings. The thermal decomposition of the title complex has been studied. IR assignments based on the molecular structure have been made.

Abstract:Four complexes of Mn(Ⅲ)with dianion of bis(benzoylacetone)diimine(abbrev.bzacen2-)and organic bases:Mn(bzacen)LClO4,where L is pyrazine,pyridine,γ-methylpyridIne and acetonitrile, have been synthesized.The crystal structure of [Mn(bzacen)(CH3CN)ClO4]has been determined by X-ray diffraction method. The crystal is orthohom-bic with a=0.9077(1)nm,b=1.5563(1)nm,c=1.7205(2)nm,V=2.4305nm3,Z=4,Dc=1.48g/cm3,Dm=1.49g/cm3;space group Pnma. The compound has an elongated octahedralstructure. The electronic spectra and infrared spectra of the compounds have been assigned.

Abstract:Amino imidazoline‐2‐imines (AmIm) are a new class of chelating, monoanionic N,N ́‐donor ligands stronger than the analogous β‐diketiminate ligands and give rise to five‐membered metallacycles. The coordination chemistry of the monoanionic ligands 1,2‐NHC=N−C6H4−NDipp− (i), cis‐1,2‐NHC=N−CMe=CMe−NDipp− (ii) was towards magnesium was investigated with the focus on the stabilization of low‐valent magnesium(I) species, NHC = cyclo‐C(NiPr2CMe)2, Dipp = 2,6‐iPrC6H3. Both ligand systems (i) and (ii) form heteroleptic magnesium iodide species with were subjected to reduction. The complex [Mg(1,2‐NHC=N−C6H4−NDipp)]2 was found to be insoluble, which prevented further purification. In contrast, the yield of the analogous complex [Mg(cis‐1,2‐NHC=N−CMe=CMe−NDipp)]2 was very low. As a significant side product the homoleptic complex [Mg(cis‐1,2‐NHC=N−CMe=CMe−NDipp)2] was identified.

Abstract:A series of sodium and magnesium complexes with alpha-diimine ligands, [Na-2(L-iPr)(Et2O)](2) (1, L-iPr = [(2,6-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i)N(Me)C](2)), [Na-2(L-Mes)(Solv)(2)](2) (L-Mes = [(2,4,6-Me3C6H3)N(Me)C](2), 2a, solv = Et2O; 2b, solv = THF), [Na-4(L-Et)(2)](n) (3, L-Et = [(2,6-Et2C6H3)N(Me)C](2)), and [Mg(L-Mes)(THF)(3)] (4), have been synthesized by reduction of the diimine ligands with sodium or magnesium metal. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the sodium complexes have a 2:1 [Na2L] unit that aggregates to dimeric (1, 2a, 2b) or polymeric (3) structures, while the magnesium complex (4) shows a monomeric 1:1 structure. In all compounds 1-4, the ligand is doubly reduced to a dianion. The two Na+ ions in 1, 2a, 2b, and 3 show different coordination modes, one of which is chelated by the N donors of a ligand with supplementary Na-C bonds to the phenyl ring of another ligand within the [Na2L](2) dimer, while the other is bonded by the central C2N2 core of the ligand and solvent molecules (1, 2a, and 2b). Compound 3 displays a novel three-dimensional network. The Mg2+ ion in 4 is coordinated by a ligand molecule and three THF molecules. Density functional theory (DFT) computations on the sodium and magnesium complexes 1 and 4 confirmed their electronic structures and the dianionic character of the ligands.

Abstract:Systematic variation of the 1,4-dioxane (dx) concentration during the precipitation of sparingly soluble [MgBr2 (dx)2 ] from ethereal Grignard solutions of RMgBr has allowed the structural investigation of crystallized [R2 Mg(dx)n ] (n=1, 1.5, 2, and 3), which form during this dioxane method, depending on the bulkiness of R. The numbering of the complexes explored in this study is based on the number n of dioxane molecules per magnesium atom, followed by the substituent R; an apostrophe denotes coordination polymers. The following derivatives were studied by X-ray crystal-structure determination and NMR spectroscopy: n=1: [Me2 Mg(μ-dx)]∞ (1'-Me) and [nPr2 Mg(μ-dx)]∞ (1'-nPr); n=1.5: [{iPr2 Mg(dx)}2 (μ-dx)] (1.5-iPr), [{oTol2 Mg(dx)}2 (μ-dx)] (1.5-oTol), and [(Me3 Si-C≡C)2 Mg(dx)1.5 ]∞ (1.5'-C2 SiMe3 ); n=2: [tBu2 Mg(dx)2 ] (2-tBu) and [oTol2 Mg(dx)2 ] (2-oTol); n=3: [Ph2 Mg(dx)3 ] (3-Ph). In the structure types 1', 1.5, and 2, the magnesium atom exhibits the coordination number 4, whereas pentacoordinate metal atoms are observed in types 3 and 1.5'. The structure type 2' is realized for [(Ph-C≡C)2 Mg(dx)2 ]∞ (2'-C2 Ph), [MgCl2 (dx)2 ]∞ (2'-Cl), and [MgBr2 (dx)2 ]∞ (2'-Br) with hexacoordinate metal atoms. The solubility of the dioxane adducts in common organic solvents strongly depends on the degree of aggregation with the solubility decreasing from molecular to strand to layer structures.

Abstract:The guanidinato lithium complex[2,6-iPr2-C6H3NC(NMe2)NLi]2Et2O was obtained via the addition reaction of 2,6-iPr2-C6H3NLiSiMe3 with carbonitrile free-from α-H.The complex was characterized by X-ray,1H NMR,13C NMR and elemental analysis.The reactivity of the title complex was discussed and the comparison for the coordination modes with its analogue was involved.

Abstract:The reactions between magnesium or zinc alkyls and 1,8-bis(triorganosilyl)diaminonaphthalenes afford the 1,8-bis(triorganosilyl)diamidonaphthalene complexes with elimination of alkanes. The reaction between 1,8-C10H6(NSiMePh2H)2 and one or two equivalents of MgnBu2 affords two complexes with differing coordination environments for the magnesium; the reaction between 1,8-C10H6(NSiMePh2H)2 and MgnBu2 in a 1 : 1 ratio affords 1,8-C10H6(NSiMePh2)2{Mg(THF)2} (1), which features a single magnesium centre bridging both ligand nitrogen donors, whilst treatment of 1,8-C10H6(NSiR3H)2 (R3 = MePh2, iPr3) with two equivalents of MgnBu2 affords the bimetallic complexes 1,8-C10H6(NSiR3)2{nBuMg(THF)}2 (R3 = MePh22, R3 = iPr33), which feature four-membered Mg2N2 rings. Similarly, 1,8-C10H6(NSiiPr3)2{MeMg(THF)}2 (4) and 1,8-C10H6(NSiMePh2)2{ZnMe}2 (5) are formed through reactions with the proligands and two equivalents of MMe2 (M = Mg, Zn). The reaction between 1,8-C10H6(NSiMePh2H)2 and two equivalents of MeMgX affords the bimetallic complexes 1,8-C10H6(NSiMePh2)2(XMgOEt2)2 (X = Br 6; X = I 7). Very small amounts of [1,8-C10H6(NSiMePh2)2{IMg(OEt2)}]2 (8), formed through the coupling of two diamidonaphthalene ligands at the 4-position with concomitant dearomatisation of one of the naphthyl arene rings, were also isolated from a solution of 7.

Abstract:The title ion-association metal complex, [Li(C4H8O)4]2[Mg2(C43H61O3)2], has been synthesized from the tridentate phenolic ligand tris-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hy-droxy-phen-yl)methane in tetra-hydro-furan (THF). The aryl-oxo magnesiate complex anion is binuclear with each Mg2O4 complex unit inversion-related and bridged through the two tridentate chelating phenolate O-donors of the ligand. The complex centres have a distorted tetra-hedral stereochemistry [Mg-O range 1.8796 (17)-2.0005 (16) Å] and an Mg⋯Mg separation of 2.9430 (14) Å]. The LiO4 coodination sphere of the cation comprises four THF O-donor atoms and has a slightly distorted tetra-hedral conformation [Li-O range 1.899 (5)- 1.953 (5) Å]. In the crystal, a number of stabilizing intra-anion C-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions are present but no inter-species associations are found.
Heteroleptic Magnesium n-Butyl on a Chemically Non-innocent 2-Anilidomethylpyridine Ligand Leading to Diverse Magnesium Hydrides

Abstract:Molecular magnesium hydrides and hydride-rich clusters are of significant interest for applications ranging from catalysis and small molecule activation to hydrogen storage. Here, we investigate the 2-anilidomethylpyridine framework NNL as an ancillary support for magnesium organometallics with a special emphasis on hydrides. The proligand NNLH (N-[2,6-bis(1-methylethyl)phenyl]-α,6-diphenyl-2-pyridinemethanamine) gives [(NNL)Mg(nBu)(thf)] (1) by nbutane elimination from Mg(nBu)2(thf)n. A stronger donor such as DMAP replaces the THF from 1 to give [(NNL)Mg(nBu)(dmap)] (2). Both are air-sensitive, and 1 is adventitiously oxidized into [(NNL)Mg(μ-OnBu)]2 (32). The homoleptic [(NNL)2Mg] (8) is made from 1 and a second equiv of NNLH. 1's terminal nBu group is selectively protonated by HN(SiMe3)2 to give [(NNL)MgHMDS] (4; HMDS = N(SiMe3)2), whereas Ph3SiOH partially protonates the backbone anilide as well to give a mixture of [(NNL)Mg(OSiPh3)(thf)] (5) and free NNLH. Like HN(SiMe3)2, aprotic MeOTf also reacts by selectively abstracting the nBu group from 1 to give [(NNL)Mg(μ:κ2-O,O'-OTf)(thf)]2 (62). Interestingly, screening the common synthetic routes for magnesium hydrides leads to diverse outcomes upon varying the Mg precursors and hydride sources. 1 and PhSiH3 give the hydride cluster [{(NNL)2Mg2(μ-H)}2(μ-H)4Mg] (7), whereas 2 and PhSiH3 give the molecular complex [(NNLde)Mg(dmap)2] (9) with a dearomatized pyridyl backbone. 1 and HBpin (pinacolborane) give a product mixture, from which a different hydride cluster [(NNL)2Mg2(μ-H)}2(μ:κ2-O,O'-O2C2Me4)] (10) is identified, showing a rare instance of complete deborylation of a HBpin molecule. 1 and HBcat (catecholborane) also give a product mixture, one of which is the borylated ligand [(NNL)Bcat] (11). HBpin with 4 as the Mg precursor takes the ligand borylation route more selectively to give [(NNL)Bpin] (12). Last, 1 reacts with iPrNH2BH3 to give [(NNL)Mg{NH(iPr)BH3}] (13), which shows a slow and fractional conversion into the dinuclear mixed hydrido amidoborane [(NNL)2Mg2(μ-H){(μ-NH(iPr)BH3}] (14) by partial β-hydride elimination. In comparison, [(NNL)Mg(iPrNHBH3)(dmap)] (15) arising from the DMAP-bound 2 and iPrNH2BH3 is stable toward such elimination.

Abstract:Several attempts to deprotonate the imidizolium salt 1-methyl-3-(4,6-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl) imidazolium bromide, H-2[CO]Br (4), tethered by substituted phenol to yield anonic carbene species M[CO] (M = Li, Na) resulted in the formation of {Na[ON](THF)}(2) (5) and {Li[ON](THF)}(2) (6) (1-methyl- 2-(4,6-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl) imidazole, H[ON]) after warming to room temperature from -78 degrees C due to 1,2-aryloxy migration. Treatment of in-situ-generated M[CO] with 1.0 equiV of MesMgBr (Mes = 2,4,6- Me3C6H2) produced a rare magnesium NHC complex, {Mg[OC]( Mes)}(2) (8). Both 5 and 8 have been characterized by an X-ray diffraction study.

Abstract:The bis‐guanidinate anion stabilized amido magnesium (II) compound [LMgN(SiMe3)2; L = {(ArHN)(ArN)‐C=N−C=(NAr)(NHAr); Ar = 2,6‐Et2‐C6H3}] (Mg‐1) has been synthesized and characterized. It has been successfully employed as a pre‐catalyst for the catalytic C‐C coupling of terminal alkynes with carbodiimides, producing propiolamidine products with moderate to good yields. The active catalyst bis‐guanidinate magnesium acetylide [LMgC≡C‐Ph]2 (Mg‐2) and the intermediate magnesium propiolamidinate [LMg{(NiPr)2C}C≡C−Ph] (Mg‐3) involved in the catalytic reaction were isolated and thoroughly characterized through multinuclear NMR and mass spectral analyses, as well as single crystal X‐ray diffraction studies. Based on the above findings, a plausible mechanistic cycle has been proposed. Additionally, a new example of bis‐guanidinate supported structurally characterized magnesium propiolamidate compound [LMg{(4‐CH3‐C6H4)N‐(C‐C≡C−Ph)=O]2 (Mg‐4) has been described via the reaction between Mg‐2 and isocyanate.

Abstract:The chemistry of magnesium organocuprates, including their synthesis, structures, and reactions, remains underexplored. In this work, by taking advantage of the high reactivity and ready availability of magnesiacyclopentadienes, a series of magnesiacyclopentadiene-based organocuprates were synthesized and structurally characterized. A variety of CuX salts (X=Cl, Br, I, or alkynyl) were successfully applied to react with magnesiacyclopentadienes. Besides CuX salts, AgX salts (X=Cl, alkynyl) also undergwent the above reaction to afford the corresponding magnesium organoargentates. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis and DFT calculations of these butadienyl magnesium organocuprates revealed unique structural characteristics and bonding modes. These results are also very useful to understand the transmetalation process, since the product can be viewed as the resting-state intermediate of a transmetalation reaction between organomagnesium compounds and coinage-metal salts. Preliminary information on the reaction chemistry of these magnesium organocuprates is provided by their reactions with allyl bromide, benzoyl chloride, and CO2.

Abstract:In this paper, we have used two N,O-ketiminato ligands (L1 and L2) with biphenyl and terphenyl substituent on the nitrogen atom. Deprotonation of L1 with KN(SiMe3 )2 and subsequent reaction with MgI2 led to a homoleptic dinuclear magnesium complex (1) with a Mg2 O2 four-membered ring. Deprotonation with nBuLi and subsequent reaction with MgI2 afforded a unusual dinuclear magnesium complex (2) with a Mg2 O2 ring. Extension of the ligand for calcium resulted in a trinuclear calcium complex (3) with six four-membered Ca2 O2 rings. We could not isolate any chelating complex when L2 was used as a ligand, and only oxygen bound magnesium (4) and calcium (5) adducts were isolated. DFT studies were performed to understand this dissimilar behavior. More diverse results were obtained when lithiated L1 and L2 were treated with germanium dichloride. We were able to stabilize a monomeric germylene monochloride (7) with L1. However, with L2, an unusual ligand scrambling, and a C-C coupling take place, leading to the formation of a secondary carbocation with GeCl3 - as a counter-anion (8). Besides, a germanium dichloride adduct (9) bound to the oxygen center of the ligand was obtained as the minor product.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of both monometallic and bimetallic alkaline–earth metal complexes supported by the phenoxy-imine ligand [2,7-(HCNDipp)-1,8–O–C10H4 where Dipp = 2,6- i Pr–C6H3]2– (DippL) have been reported. Though the ligand possesses two [N,O–] pockets, it is the central [O–,O–] coordination site into which the oxophilic M2+ centers preferentially bind. Protonolysis allowed for the isolation of well-defined dimeric bimetallic complexes for magnesium [DippLMg(thf)]2 (1) and [HDippLMgCl]2 (2); for calcium, strontium, and barium, the analogous thf adducts exist in solution as an equilibrium mixture of the monomeric and dimeric species; DippLM(thf) x ⇋ [DippLM(thf) x ]2 (M = Ca; 3(thf) 2 /[3(thf) 2 ] 2 , M = Sr; 4(thf)/[4(thf)] 2 , and M = Ba; 5(thf)/[5(thf)] 2 ). Addition of crown ether allowed for the trapping of the monometallic heavier alkaline–earth complexes (DippL)Ca(18-c-6) (3(18-c-6)), (DippL)Sr(18-c-6)(thf) (4(18-c-6)(thf)), and (DippL)Ba(18-c-6)(py) (5(18-c-6)(py)). A salt metathesis route to generate complexes was also investigated; facile deprotonation of H2 DippL afforded DippLK2 (6) but subsequent reaction with alkaline earth halides reliably afforded mixtures consistent with DippLM(thf) x and [HDippLMgI]2.

Abstract:A new heterobimetallic potassium magnesiate complex KMg[N(SiMe3)(2)](2) Bn (Bn = PhCH2-) was synthesized by simply mixing magnesium amide and potassium benzyl in toluene. The TMEDA-ligated potassium magnesiate complex was also prepared and its solid structure was characterized by X-ray crystal diffraction, which revealed interactions between potassium and magnesium atoms via amide and benzyl group. The potassium magnesiate complex showed dramatic bimetallic synergistic effect in the catalytic intermolecular hydroamination of styrenes. (C) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A series of mixtures of symmetric metal complexes of C3S5- and C3S4Se2- ligands (C3S5-1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate, DMIT; C3S4Se2- = 1,3-dithiole-2-selone-4, 5-dithiolate, DMISE), [Bu4N]2[M(C3S4.4Se0.6)2] (MNi, 1 ; M = Cu, 2), [Bu4N] [Ni(C3S4.4Se0.6)2], 3, [Bu4N]2[Ni(C3S4.7Se0.3)2], 4, and [Bu4N][Ni(C3S4.7Se0.3)2], 5, have been prepared. Oxidation reactions of 1 with excess iodine afforded the neutral complex [Ni(C3S4.4Se0.6)2], 6, which exhibited electrical conductivity of 0.29 S cm-1 at 25°C for a compacted pellet. Single-crystal X-ray analysis of 1 revealed that the anion structure as a whole is planar. Both 3 and 5 form a one-dimensional arrangement through the intermolecular sulfursulfur contacts. The S and Se at the terminal positions of the ligand are disordered. A single-crystal ESR study on [BuN4]2[Cu/Ni(C3S4.4Se0.6)2] demonstrated that the M-S coordination bond in the complex has a strong covalent σ-bond character.
