Abstract:The Bloch-like equations for the intracavity interaction of coherent light with semiconductors below the Mott density are derived. These equations include the many-body Coulomb effects. Steady state analysis reveals the characteristics of bistability and hysteresis in such systems. It is shown that the hysteresis loops increase and that the bistability can be realized more easily due to the many-body effects.

Abstract:Optical bistability in a unidirectional cavity has been analyzed based on a ground-state doublet three-level atomic model in which atoms are initially prepared in a coherent superposition state, It is shown that bistability can be realized due to the initial coherence. Furthermore, the bistable hysteresis cycle becomes wider as the initial polarization increases, and the bistability can be controlled by the initial coherence.

Abstract:We study theoretically and numerically optical bistability in photonic crystal waveguide-cavity system with cavity holding multipole mode patterns. The elimination of dominant component of the radiation in cavity can reduce dramatically the scattering of light by cavity and can be used to achieve bistability at band edge. Numerical results performed by the finite-difference time-domain method indicate that the switch power can be reduced greatly that can be regarded as the improvement of quality-factor in cavity.

Abstract:The steady-state behavior in a unidirectional cavity has been analyzed by taking into account the effect of phase fluctuation in the control field based on a Λ-type atomic model. It is shown that even if both fields are in resonance with the corresponding atomic transitions, optical bistability can still be realized due to a phase fluctuation in the control field. Furthermore, the bistable hysteresis loop becomes wider as the linewidth increases.

Abstract:Based on our theoretical results of dynamical behaviors of light transmission in optical superlattices, we show that there is a new type of optical bistable mechanism, i.e., the index-modulation mechanism, existing in a two-dimensional superlattice that contains dielectric nonlinearity of the Kerr form. This bistable mechanism is not exhibited in one-dimensional superlattices.

Abstract:A tunable optical multistability scheme based on a single cavity mode coupled with two separate atomic transitions in an atom-cavity system is proposed and demonstrated. Under the collective strong coupling condition, multiple polariton eigenstates of the atom-cavity system are produced. The threshold and optical multistability curve can be tuned freely by system parameters in a broadband range. Moreover, a certain bistability region of the system is split to two bistability regions due to destructive quantum interference induced by an extra weak control field. Compared to traditional optical multistabilities created by two or more light fields, the proposed optical multistability scheme has compactness and is easy to be miniaturized. The proposed scheme is useful for manufacturing integrated application of multi-state all-optical logic devices and constructing basic elements of all-optical communication networks.

Optical Bistability in a Low Photon-Density Regime

Abstract:We give a microscopic description of the optical bistability, where the transmission coefficient has two different values as a function of input light intensity, and the system exhibits a discontinuous jump with a hysteresis loop. We developed an efficient numerical algorithm to treat the quantum master equation for hybridized systems of many photons and a large number of two-level atoms. By using this method, we characterize the bistability from the viewpoint of eigenmodes and eigenvalues of the time evolution operator of the quantum master equation. We investigate the optical bistability within the low photon-density regime, where the hybridization of photon and atom degrees of freedom occurs and the resonance spectrum has a double peak structure. We compared it with the standard optical bistability between the low photon-density regime and the high photon-density regime, where the photons can be treated as a classical electromagnetic field and the resonance spectrum has a single peak structure. We discuss the steady-state properties of the optical bistability: dependencies of the photon number density on the intensity and the double peak structure of the photon number distribution inside the bistable region. As for the dynamical properties, we find that the relaxation timescale shows an exponential growth with the system size, and reveal how the hysteresis loop of the optical bistability depends on the size of the system and the sweeping rate of the driving amplitude. Finally, by investigating the effects of detuning frequency of the input field, we clarify the characteristic properties of the present optical bistability within the low photon-density regime, which are qualitatively different from the standard optical bistable phenomena.

Abstract:It is shown that, when two coherent waves are obliquely incident to a one-dimensional nonlinear optical superlattice containing Kerr-form dielectric nonlinearity, an incident-dependent two-dimensional nonlinear optical superlattice can be constructed. This structure can be bistable. There exist two types of optical bistable mechanism, i.e., the index-modulation mechanism and distributed feedback mechanism. Owing to the index-modulation mechanism, the threshold for the bistability is lower than that of a more traditional one-dimensional distributed feedback structure.
Bistability and Hysteresis in Laser-Driven Polyatomic-Molecules

Abstract:A model for multiphoton excitation of a polyatomic molecule by an IR laser derived by Narducci, et al. has been analyzed by using bifurcation theory. The steady state surface formed by plotting average vibrational excitation vs laser frequency and field amplitude takes the shape of a cusp catastrophe. Linear stability analysis for a wide region in the parameter space shows that the upper branch is always stable and the middle branch unstable. The lower branch is stable for small λ (the ratio of the longitudinal relaxation time to the transverse one). But for large λ the lower branch loses stability as laser intensity increases. Analysis according to Hopf’s theorem shows that the bifurcation point is subcritical. Unstable limit cycles around the birfurcation point are found by both perturbation analysis and numerical calculations. Isotope selectivity, red-shiftedness of the optimal frequency and threshold phenomenon observed in IR multiphoton excitation of molecules can be explained in terms of this model. Practical importance of molecular bistable and hysteretic properties concerning memory devices and vibrational relaxation studies are discussed.

Abstract:A delay-differential system related to or device is discussed in this paper. We obtained the instability conditions for the steady state and the critical relations among the parameters and for the modes by solving the characteristic equation of the system. Based on the numerical result the chaos and bifurcation “spectrum” in the plane was shown for a simple model equation when higher modes were neglected. We discovered the coexistence of two different kinds of attractors for this equation in a certain region of the parameter plane.

Abstract:Relaxation oscillation can occur in a bistable system when the nonlinearity has two contributions of opposite sign and different time constants.1 Optoelectronic bistable laser diode or light emitting diode (BILD or BILED) circuit is a promising optical logic device.2 Here we present the observation and analysis of optical regenerative pulsation in a system constructed of a liquid crystal switch and BILED circuit. Sine wavelike pulses were obtained in our experiment, and the experimental results show that the oscillation frequencies were stable. The frequency can be adjusted by changing the voltage supply. In our experiment the output from an argon laser is controlled by a LC switch, which is connected to a BILED circuit. The voltage applied across the LC switch is provided by an amplifier, and it is proportional to the output of the BILED circuit. The BILED circuit has two output signals of feedback. One is the light emitted from the LED in the circuit. The other is a part of the laser beam transmitted from the LC switch. As oscillation occurs in the circuit, the laser beam is modulated into a train of pulses by the LC switch.

Abstract:The periodic and chaotic behaviors for both long and short delay time are demonstrated successfully using a hybrid OBD. The degree of stability S is introduced into the dynamic equations of optical bistability with a delayed feedback. The instability threshold is S = 2 for long delay time and S = 1 + π/2Q for short delay time.

Abstract:Using an analytical method proposed originally for the logistic map, we studied in detail the bifurcation diagram of a bimodal map related to a hybrid optical bistability device with liquid crystal as the nonlinear medium. In particular, we gave the equations of all the dark lines going through the chaotic region and all boundaries of the chaotic bands. We showed how to determine the parameter value for a given superstable period from corresponding word in the symbolic dynamics made of four letters.

Abstract:We explore theoretically the bistable behavior of intracavity photon number in a two-mode cavity optomechanical system, where two cavity modes are coupled to a common mechanical resonator. When the two cavity modes are driven by two pump laser beams, respectively, we find that the optical bistability can be controlled by tuning the power and frequency of the pump beams. The common interaction to a mechanical mode enables one to control the bistable behavior in one cavity by adjusting the pump laser beam driving another cavity. We also show that both branches of optical bistability at photon numbers below unity can be observed in this two-mode optomechanical system. This phenomenon can find potential applications in controllable optical switch.

Abstract:A photonic crystal waveguide-cavity structure with a partially reflecting element is exploited to achieve optical bistability. Analysis of the theoretical model and validation of the numerical simulation indicate that this structure shows an asymmetrical lineshape and a novel switching characteristic, with the nonlinear transmission power varying sharply in a very narrow linewidth range. The characteristic power can be decreased from 6.35 mW/mu m of the symmetrical lineshape to 0.604 mW/mu m of the asymmetrical one. Through the study of the quality factor of the cavity, the results show that the lower switch power of an asymmetrical lineshape is essentially due to the increased Q-factor, which causes more and more energy to be stored in the cavity. Exact bistability and time pseudo-crystallization of driven-dissipative fermionic lattices

Abstract:The existence of bistability in quantum optical systems remains a intensely debated open question beyond the mean-field approximation. Quantum fluctuations are finite-size corrections to the mean-field approximation used because the full exact solution is unobtainable. Usually, quantum fluctuations destroy the bistability present on the mean-field level. Here, by identifying and using exact modulated semi-local dynamical symmetries in a certain quantum optical models of driven-dissipative fermionic chains we exactly prove bistability in precisely the quantum fluctuations. Surprisingly, rather than destroying bistability, the quantum fluctuations themselves exhibit bistability, even though it is absent on the mean-field level for our systems. Moreover, the models studied acquire additional thermodynamic dynamical symmetries that imply persistent periodic oscillations in the quantum fluctuations, constituting pseudo-variants of boundary time crystals. Physically, these emergent operators correspond to finite-frequency and finite-momentum semi-local Goldstone modes. Our work therefore provides to the best of our knowledge the first example of a provably bistable quantum optical system.

Abstract:Optical bistable behavior in a quasi-waveguide containing non-linear film has been experimentally investigated in several publications in the past years; however, the physical mechanism for optical bistability has not been theoretically explained. In the present letter, we propose a theoretical model and successfully explain the observed optical bistability of both the reflected light and the scattered light (m-lines) in a non-linear quasi-waveguide. The optical bistability in the non-linear quasi-waveguide is due to the scattering-type wavevector mismatch mechanism.

Abstract:We present phase control of the fluctuation-induced bistability in the three-level A-type system where a weak, amplitude-fluctuating component and a strong coherent component are used as a control field. With the addition of the stochastic component, optical bistability can be produced even if detunings of the probe and control fields from corresponding atomic transition frequencies are equal; without the addition, the medium is transparent to the input light. Depending on the relative phase between the stochastic and coherent parts, bistability appears or disappears and the threshold intensity is raised or lowered.

Abstract:We study the optical bistability for a Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms in a driven optical cavity with a Kerr medium. We find that both the threshold point of optical bistability transition and the width of optical bistability hysteresis can be controlled by appropriately adjusting the Kerr interaction between the photons. In particular, we show that the optical bistability will disappear when the Kerr interaction exceeds a critical value.

Abstract:The description of light diffraction using catastrophe optics is one of the most intriguing theoretical invention in the field of classical optics of the last four decades. Its practical implementation has faced some resistance over the years, mainly due to the difficulty of mathematically decorating the different, topologically speaking, types of optical singularities (caustics) that concur to build up the skeleton on which diffraction patterns stem. Such a fundamental {\em dressing problem} has been solved in the past only for the so-called {\em fold}, which lies at the bottom of the hierarchy of structurally stable caustics. Climbing this hierarchy implies considerably more challenging mathematical problems to be solved.
