Abstract:Tea polyphenols is an ideal natural anti-oxidant,which has being widely applied in many fields.The methods of extraction of tea polyphenols from green tea have been become one of hot points of tea research.In the present paper,methods of extraction of tea polyphonols from green tea were reviewed,including solvent extraction,ionic precipitation,supercritical CO2 extraction,resin adsorption,ultrasonic assistant extraction,microwave assistant extraction and so on.We also discussed basic principle,producing routine and advantage or disadvantage of each method at the same time.

Abstract:Catechin is a main health care functional component in tea. Catechin is one of tea polyphenols. The studies show that the catechin in tea polyphenols has many functions, such as antibacterial effect, anti-tumor, scavenging free radicals, delaying aging, inhibiting obesity, anti-virus and so on. in this paper, the pharmacological action of catechin was reviewed. It's pointed out that catechin has important medicinal value as an active component of natural products. The paper can provide a theoretical basis for searching for better active natural drug components.

Abstract:In this experiment, six kinds of tea extractive were tested as research objects, their total phenol content, catechins content, antioxidant activity and free radical scavenging activities were determined, and the relationships between them were analyzed according to the results. The analysis showed that the correlation coefficient between antioxidant activity and total phenol content is higher than that between antioxidant activity and total catechins content as well as EGCG by and large, indicating that tea polyphenols without catechins also has high antioxidant ability; the correlation coefficient between antioxidant activity and EGCG content is higher than that between antioxidant activity and total catechins, indicating that antioxidant activity of EGCG is higher than that of catechins' average; the results also showed that free radical scavenging ability of tea polyphenols, catechins and EGCG is different from each other.

Abstract:Tea catechins, have received considerable attention in recent years due to their numerous potentially beneficial medicinal properties. A common discussed mechanism of their biological and pharmacological effects is the antioxidative activities of tea catechins. In this paper, we evaluated the scavenging effects of four catechins both on superoxide anions (O2-) and hydroxyl free radical (@OH). In addition their synergic effects, structure-activity relationship, as well as stoichiometric factors and rate constants for the reactions of O2-and @OH with EGCG were discussed.

Abstract:Many in vitro studies have shown that tea catechins had vevarious health beneficial effects. However, inconsistent results between in vitro and in vivo studies or between laboratory tests and epidemical studies are observed. Low bioavailability of tea catechins was an important factor leading to these inconsistencies. Research advances in bioavailability studies involving absorption and metabolic biotransformation of tea catechins were reviewed in the present paper. Related techniques for improving their bioavailability such as nanostructure-based drug delivery system, molecular modification, and co-administration of catechins with other bioactives were also discussed.

Abstract:Tea catechins, the most important compounds in tea polyphenols, can efficiently scavenge superoxide anion free-radical (O₂-·), hydroxyl radical. (·OH) The mechanism of scavenging active oxygen free radicals was investigated by ESR spin trapping technique and Chemiluminescence. Results showed that various tea catechins constitute an antioxidant cycle in accordance with the decreasing order of the first reductive potential, and produce the effect of cooperative strength each other. Esterificated catechins could scavenge active oxygen free radicals more effectively than the non-esterificated ones. When ·OH and O₂-·- were scavenged by (-)-epigallocatechin gallate [(-)- EGCG], the stoichiometric factors were 6, and the rate constants of scavenging reaction reached 7.71x10(6) and 3.52x10(11) L mmol-¹ S-¹, respectively. In the mean time, tea catechins could scavenge superoxide anion fiee radical (O₂-·) and hydroxyl radical (·OH) in a dose dependent manner. But at higher concentration or pH value, tea catechins can induce the prooxidant.

Abstract:Tea with high catechin contents has various health benefits. There are more than ten catechins in tea, among which epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant. The inhibitory effects of tea and its major catechin (EGCG) on breast cancer were reviewed in the present paper, which included their abilities of suppressing carcinogen-induced ROS elevation and DNA damages, decreasing the responsiveness of cells to tumor necrosis factors, blocking the binding of estrogen to estrogen receptor, inhibiting DNA methylation, protecting mitochondria from oxidative damages and inhibiting tumor angiogenesis. The anti-proliferation and anti-metastasis of cancer cells and their synergistic effects with anticancer drugs were also mentioned. The inconsistent results in previous studies and directions for future research were finally discussed.

Abstract:Tea is an infusion of the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant and is the most widely consumed beverage in the world after water. The main chemical components in teas are phenolic compounds (tea polyphenols, mainly tea catechins). A large number of in vitro and in vivo scientific studies have supported that the tea polyphenols can provide a number of health benefits such as, reducing the incidence of coronary heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Recently, tea polyphenols have proven highly attractive as lead compounds for drug discovery programs. A clear understanding of chemistry, stability, pharmacokinetics and metabolic fate of tea will be significant to elucidate many medicinal effects by biochemical theory and pharmaceutical development. This article reviews the current literature on the pharmacoknetics and biotransformation of tea catechins. The half-lives of tea polyphenols are 2-4h and their absorption and elimination are rapid in humans. The peak times (tmax) are 1 and 3 h after oral administration and the peak plasma concentrations are low μM range. It has been reported that catechins are easily metabolized by enzyme and microbe, and the main metabolic pathways are methylation, glucuronidation, sulfation, ring-fission metabolism, and so on. The information is important to discuss some of the challenges and benefits of pursuing this family of compounds for drug discovery.

Abstract:Catechins are a cluster of polyphenolic bioactive components in green tea. Anticarcinogenic effects of tea catechins have been reported since the 1980s, but it has been controversial. The present paper reviews the advances in studies on the anticarcinogenic activities of tea and catechins, including epidemiological evidence and anticarcinogenic mechanism. Tea catechins showed antagonistic effects on many cancers, such as gynecological cancers, digestive tract cancers, incident glioma, liver and gallbladder cancers, lung cancer, etc. The mechanism underlying the anticarcinogenic effects of catechins involves in inhibiting the proliferation and growth of cancer cells, scavenging free radicals, suppressing metastasis of cancer cells, improving immunity, interacting with other anticancer drugs, and regulating signaling pathways. The inconsistent results and their causes are also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Tea materials are widely consumed beverages in the world and are a rich source of dietary polyphenols. Catechins found in tea show excellent antioxidant potential, which is beneficial for many diseases such as cancers and cardiovascular diseases. These Tea catechins can interact with plasma proteins to form soluble or insoluble complexes, which are responsible for their bioactivities in vivo. However, there is little review published recently which focused on tea catechins-plasma protein interaction (TcPI), despite numerous articles have appeared in this field. This review summarizes the recent trend in TcPI studies focusing on metabolism, structure-affinity relationship, influence on antioxidant activity, and molecular docking aspects.

Abstract:Increasing interest in the health benefits of tea has led to the inclusion of tea extracts in dietary supplements and functional foods. However, epidemiologic evidence regarding the effects of tea consumption on cancer and cardiovascular disease risk is conflicting. While tea contains a number of bioactive chemicals, it is particularly rich in catechins, of which epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant. Catechins and their derivatives are thought to contribute to the beneficial effects ascribed to tea. Tea catechins and polyphenols are effective scavengers of reactive oxygen species in vitro and may also function indirectly as antioxidants through their effects on transcription factors and enzyme activities. The fact that catechins are rapidly and extensively metabolized emphasizes the importance of demonstrating their antioxidant activity in vivo. In humans, modest transient increases in plasma antioxidant capacity have been demonstrated following the consumption of tea and green tea catechins. The effects of tea and green tea catechins on biomarkers of oxidative stress, especially oxidative DNA damage, appear very promising in animal models, but data on biomarkers of in vivo oxidative stress in humans are limited. Larger human studies examining the effects of tea and tea catechin intake on biomarkers of oxidative damage to lipids, proteins, and DNA are needed.

Abstract:Catechins not only have antitumor, antioxidant, antibacterial and antiviral functions, but also can protect the heart and brain and execute other pharmacological effects. These pharmacological effects are principally dependent on the polyhydroxyl structure of catechins, which, however, makes catechins unstable under neutral and alkaline conditions. Catechins are rapidly methylated or glycosylated by enzymes when ingested into the human body. Researchers have found that introducing new chemical groups into the structure of catechins can significantly improve their stability and bioavailability and specifically enhance their pharmacological effects. Notably, methylated catechins can suppress allergic reaction and tumor cell resistance; glycosylation can increase the water solubility of catechins and effectively prevent browning, while acylated catechins show significantly improved antioxidant and antitumor activity due to their high fat solubility. Moreover, the effects of substitution at different locations are different. Studying the synthesis routes and pharmacological effects of catechin derivatives will help discover new pharmacological effects of catechins and promote the clinical application of catechins. The aim of this article is to outline the the biosynthesis and chemical synthesis pathways of catechins with focus on the synthesis pathways and pharmacological effects of catechin derivatives.

Abstract:Tea is rich in polyphenolic catechins which are beneficial to health. There have been evidences suggesting that habitual tea consumption may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Intake of tea or catechins isolated from tea was shown to inhibit the development of CVD in population studies and in animal models. Many possible pathways and mechanisms were investigated. There have been evidences showing that tea and tea catechins reduced the risk of CVD by enhancing antioxidant activity, attenuating metabolic syndrome, inhibiting angiotensin converting enzyme, improving endothelial dys-function, preventing cardiac hypertrophy and protecting mitochondria from damage.
