Abstract:Image segmentation can be regarded as the problem of two-class pattern classification. How to apply the maximum likelihood clustering algorithm to image segmentation is discussed in this paper. Simulated annealing technology is used to solve the problem of maximum likelihood clustering, which avoids the local optimal solution of iterative method. It shows better image segmentation effect than the famous Otsu algorithm and iterative method with less classification error than iterative method.

Abstract:The Bayesian optimization algorithm uses Bayesian networks as the probability model of its solution space. Although the research on this algorithm has steadily developed, there are still some problems in its application process, such as excessive computational complexity. To solve various problems in Bayesian algorithm, reduce its computational complexity, and enable it to better achieve image segmentation. The study chooses to improve the Bayesian algorithm on the basis of immune algorithm, and solves the problem of computational complexity by reducing the number of Bayesian network construction times, thereby improving the individual fitness of the population. Through simulation experiments, it has been shown that the average number of times the improved Bayesian algorithm reaches the optimal value is 30, which is higher than the traditional algorithm’s 20 times. Its excellent optimization ability searches for the optimal threshold to complete image segmentation. The improved Bayesian optimization algorithm based on immune algorithm can effectively reduce computational complexity, shorten computational time, and improve convergence. And applying Bayesian algorithm to image segmentation has broadened the application field of the algorithm and found new exploration directions for image segmentation.

Automatic Multilevel Thresholding for Image Segmentation Based on Block Sampling and Genetic Algorithm

Abstract:Multilevel thresholding is an important technique for image compression, image analysis and pattern recognition. However, it is a hard problem to determine the number of thresholds automatically. In this paper, a new multilevel thresholding method called as automatic multilevel thresholding algorithm for image segmentation based on block sampling and genetic algorithm (AMT-BSGA) is proposed on the basis of block sampling and genetic algorithm. The proposed method can automatically determine the appropriate number of thresholds and the proper threshold values. In AMT-BSGA, an image is treated as a group of individual pixels with the gray values. First, an image is evenly divided into several blocks, and a sample is drawn from each block. Then, genetic algorithm based optimization is applied to each sample to maximize the ratio of mean and variance of the sample. Based on the optimized samples, the number of thresholds and threshold values are preliminarily determined. Finally, a deterministic method is implemented to further optimize the number of thresholds and threshold values. AMT-BSGA can work without prior knowledge on other auxiliary information, such as contextual or textual properties, and the number of thresholds. It is low in computing complexity which is almost independent from the number of thresholds and can avoid the burden of analyzing histograms. AMT-BSGA can produce effective, efficient and smoother results, which has been verified by extensive simulations on Berkeley datasets.

Abstract:This paper presents an improved genetic algorithm focused on multi-threshold optimization for image segmentation in digital pathology. By innovatively enhancing the selection mechanism and crossover operation, the limitations of traditional genetic algorithms are effectively addressed, significantly improving both segmentation accuracy and computational efficiency. Experimental results demonstrate that the improved genetic algorithm achieves the best balance between precision and recall within the threshold range of 0.02 to 0.05, and it significantly outperforms traditional methods in terms of segmentation performance. Segmentation quality is quantified using metrics such as precision, recall, and F1 score, and statistical tests confirm the superior performance of the algorithm, especially in its global search capabilities for complex optimization problems. Although the algorithm's computation time is relatively long, its notable advantages in segmentation quality, particularly in handling high-precision segmentation tasks for complex images, are highly pronounced. The experiments also show that the algorithm exhibits strong robustness and stability, maintaining reliable performance under different initial conditions. Compared to general segmentation models, this algorithm demonstrates significant advantages in specialized tasks, such as pathology image segmentation, especially in resource-constrained environments. Therefore, this improved genetic algorithm offers an efficient and precise multi-threshold optimization solution for image segmentation, providing valuable reference for practical applications.

Abstract:The traditional segmentation method based on maximum histogram entropy can not obtain ideal result for lower signal-noise-rate images.But 2D maximum entropy method can improve the anti-noise ability by fully using the information of gray distribution and spacial correlation of neighbouring pixels.In this paper,a 2D maximum entropy method is expounded detailedly,genetic algorithm is improved,and especially a new parabola-kind mutation operator is proposed.The result of experiment shows that 2D maximum entropy method is of higher robustness,and the improved genetic algorithm can converge the optimum threshold quickly and has good optimum effect.

Abstract:In the image-based monitoring and control of crystallization process, effective crystal image segmentation is a basis for crystal object recognition and measurement. In this paper, a new threshold segmentation algorithm based on gray distribution steepest descent method is presented according to the unimodal characteristics of the black background crystal images. The image segmentation threshold is selected to be the fastest decline point on the probability density function of the crystal image's gray distribution. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach compared with the current image segmentation algorithms.

Abstract:In the field of image analysis, segmentation is one of the most important preprocessing steps. One way to achieve segmentation is the use of threshold selection, where each pixel that belongs to a determined class, based on the mutual visual characteristics, is labeled according to the selected threshold. In this work, a combination of two pioneer methods, namely Otsu and Kapur, are investigated to solve the threshold selection problem. Optimum parameters of these objective functions are calculated using Bacterial Foraging (BF) optimization algorithm, for its accuracy, and Harmony Search (HS), for its speed. However, the biggest problem of soft computing family algorithms is catching into a local optimum. To resolve this critical issue, we investigate the power of Learning Automata (LA) which works as a controller to make switching between these two optimization methods. LA is a heuristic method which can solve complex optimization problems with interesting results in parameter estimation. Despite other techniques commonly seek through the parameter map, LA explores in the probability space, providing appropriate convergence properties and robustness. The proposed method is tested on benchmark images and shows fast convergence avoiding the typical sensitivity to initial conditions such as the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm or the complex, and time-consuming computations which are commonly found in gradient methods. Experimental results demonstrate the algorithm’s ability to perform automatic multi-threshold selection and show interesting advantages as it is compared to other algorithms solving the same task.

Abstract:Image segmentation is a key technology in image processing, and threshold segmentation is one of the methods used frequently. Aimed at that only one threshold or several thresholds are set in traditional threshold-based segmentation algorithm, it is difficult to extract the complex information in an image, a new segmentation algorithm that each pixel in the image has its own threshold is proposed. In this algorithm, the threshold of a pixel in an image is estimated by calculating the mean of the grayscale values of its neighbor pixels, and the square variance of the grayscale values of the neighbor pixels are also calculated as an additional judge condition, so that the result of the proposed algorithm is the edge of the image. In fact the proposed algorithm is equal to an edge detector in image processing. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm could produce precise image edge, while it is reasonable to estimate the threshold of a pixel through the statistical information of its neighbor pixels.

Abstract:To effectively accomplish analysis tasks for noisy images, two new algorithms for dynamic image segmentation based on 2-D genetic algorithms are proposed. In these new algorithms: (a) coding with 2-D chromosome by taking respectively the surface of thresholds and surface of fuzzy membership is adopted; (b) initialization of population with global thresholding methods and fuzzy set theory is experienced; (c) construction of fitness function by using energy function of Hopfield neural network as well as by integrating objective function of FCM algorithm, thresholding algorithms and general criteria of image segmentation is employed. A number of experiments using real images are performed, in which the proposed algorithms are compared with some typical segmentation algorithms. Results show that the new algorithms have superior performance for noisy images.

Abstract:Edge is composed by a collection of its nearby pixels which has a step change or changes in roof, an image is an information system and most of its information comes from the edges. This paper gives a brief overview of the status and the importance of image edge detection and introduces the research status of the image edge detection. After that, it introduces the basic principle and the main steps of the genetic algorithm and ant colony algorithm. On the basis of these, the paper proposed a new hybrid algorithm for the image edge extraction and refining, which combined the genetic algorithm and ant colony algorithm. Through the analysis of the time-speed graph of the genetic algorithm and the ant colony algorithm, we can find the best fusion point between the genetic algorithm and the ant colony algorithm. The experiment indicated the proposed hybrid algorithm can make the full use of the image information, the simulation time is shorter, the image edge is more continuous, and preserved the outline of original image more completely.

Abstract:Thresholding is one of the important steps in image analysis process and used extensively in different image processing techniques. Medical image segmentation plays a very important role in surgery planning, identification of tumours, diagnosis of organs, etc. In this article, a novel approach for medical image segmentation is proposed using a hybrid technique of genetic algorithm and fuzzy logic. Fuzzy logic can handle uncertain and imprecise information. Genetic algorithms help in global optimization, gives good results in noisy environments and supports multi-objective optimization. Gaussian, trapezoidal and triangular membership functions are used separately for calculating the entropy and finding the fitness value. CPU time, Root Mean Square Error, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy are calculated using the three membership functions separately at threshold levels 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9. MRI images are considered for applying the proposed method and the results are analysed. The experimental results obtained prove the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, a multilevel thresholding color image segmentation method is proposed using a modified Artificial Bee Colony(ABC) algorithm. In this work, in order to improve the local search ability of ABC algorithm, Krill Herd algorithm is incorporated into its onlooker bees phase. The proposed algorithm is named as Krill herd-inspired modified Artificial Bee Colony algorithm (KABC algorithm). Experiment results verify the robustness of KABC algorithm, as well as its improvement in optimizing accuracy and convergence speed. In this work, KABC algorithm is used to solve the problem of multilevel thresholding for color image segmentation. To deal with luminance variation, rather than using gray scale histogram, a HSV space-based pre-processing method is proposed to obtain 1D feature vector. KABC algorithm is then applied to find thresholds of the feature vector. At last, an additional local search around the quasi-optimal solutions is employed to improve segmentation accuracy. In this stage, we use a modified objective function which combines Structural Similarity Index Matrix (SSIM) with Kapur's entropy. The pre-processing method, the global optimization with KABC algorithm and the local optimization stage form the whole color image segmentation method. Experiment results show enhance in accuracy of segmentation with the proposed method.

Abstract:With the development of society and changes in the human living environment, people are increasingly attaching importance to their own health. Regarding medical imaging examinations of certain parts of the body, the process of medical image segmentation has become extremely important. This paper presents a novel hybrid algorithm: SAOBL-IA, a fusion of the Simulated Annealing(SA), Opposition-based Learning(OBL)and Island Algorithm(IA). The Island Algorithm itself suffers from slow convergence speed and the tendency to get stuck in local optimum. To address these limitations, we introduce opposition-based learning to enhance the search range and avoid local optimum. Furthermore, we leverage the simulated annealing approach to accelerate the convergence of SAOBL-IA. Comparing the experimental results, it can be seen that SAOBL-IA has better comprehensive performance. Subsequently, the SAOBL-IA algorithm is utilized in conjunction with an optimized two-dimensional OTSU fusion segmentation technique for the purpose of medical image processing. This study proposes an application of image segmentation based on the SAOBL-IA. The segmentation of pixels around the background and target regions using the two-dimensional OTSU method faces challenges in terms of accuracy. To address this issue, an adaptive thresholding technique known as Adaptive Forking is employed for optimization. By determining the slope of the fork based on the misclassified pixel ratio, enhanced segmentation accuracy can be achieved. This improved approach is then integrated with the SAOBL-IA algorithm and applied to the segmentation of lung medical images. The experimental findings show that the amalgamation of SAOBL-IA with the adaptive two-dimensional OTSU segmentation approach, as proposed in this study, manifests superior segmentation speed and enhanced precision in the context of medical image segmentation.

Abstract:By integrating the genetic algorithm with the simulated annealing and adopting a self- adaptive crossover and mutation probabilities, the paper proposes an improved hybrid genetic algorithm-a self-adaptive simulated annealing genetic algorithm. Through certain simulation tests of the traveling salesman problem(TSP), and comparing the results of the genetic algorithm and simulated annealing, the paper comes to the conclusion that this improved hybrid genetic algorithm betters the performance of the traditional genetic one, speed up the convergence, thus optimizing its function.

Abstract:In view of the problems that the dragonfly algorithm has, such as that it easily falls into the local optimal solution and the optimization accuracy is low, an improved Dragonfly Algorithm (IDA) is proposed and applied to Otsu multi-threshold image segmentation. Firstly, an elite-opposition-based learning optimization is utilized to enhance the diversity of the initial population of dragonflies, laying the foundation for subsequent algorithm iterations. Secondly, an enhanced sine cosine strategy is introduced to prevent the algorithm from falling into local optima, thereby improving its ability to escape from local optima. Then, an adaptive t-distribution strategy is incorporated to enhance the balance between global exploration and local search, thereby improving the convergence speed of the algorithm. To evaluate the performance of this algorithm, we use eight international benchmark functions to test the performance of the IDA algorithm and compare it with the sparrow search algorithm (SSA), sine cosine algorithm (SCA) and dragonfly algorithm (DA). The experiments show that the algorithm performs better in terms of convergence speed and accuracy. At the same time, the Otsu method is employed to determine the optimal threshold, a series of experiments are carried out on six images provided by Berkeley University, and the results are compared with the other three algorithms. From the experimental results, the peak signal-to-noise ratio index (PSNR) and structural similarity index (SSIM) based on the IDA algorithm method are better than other optimization algorithms. The experimental results indicate that the application of Otsu multi-threshold segmentation based on the IDA algorithm is potential and meaningful.
