Abstract:The Burgers equation can describe some phenomena such as turbulence, shock wave and traffic flow dynamics problems. Under consideration in this paper is a discrete Burgers equation, which can be viewed as the discrete counterpart of Burgers equation. Firstly, we correspond this discrete equation to the famous continuous Burgers equation under the continuous limit. Secondly, based on its 2 × 2 matrix linear spectral problem, we construct the discrete generalized (m,N−m)-fold Darboux transformation (DT) to derive various exact solutions covering kink soliton, rational solutions, semi-rational solutions as well as their mixed superposition solutions. Furthermore, we discuss kink multi-soliton resonant phenomena through the graphics analysis and use asymptotic analysis technique to investigate the limit states of various exact solutions. Finally, the dynamical evolutions of kink soliton solutions are studied through numerical simulations. The results obtained in this paper may be useful for exploring physical phenomena governed by Burgers equation.

Saddle-node Bifurcations in Burgers Equation As Shock Wave Occurrence

Abstract:The nature of the shock wave, governed by Burgers equation, is presented from viewpoint of saddle-node bifurcations. First, the inviscid Burgers equation is studied in detail, and the solution of the system with a certain initial condition is obtained. The solution in vector form is reduced into a Map in order to investigate the stability and bifurcation in the system. It has been proved that there exists a thin spatial zone where a saddle-node bifurcation occurs as time goes on, and the velocity of the fluid behaves as jumping, namely, the characteristic of shock wave. Further, the period-doubling bifurcation is captured, that means there exist multiple states as time increases, and the complicated spatio-temporal pattern is formatted. In addition to above, the viscous Burgers equation is further studied to extend to dissipative systems. By traveling wave transformation, the governing equation is reduced into an ordinary differential equation. Then, the instability or bifurcation condition is obtained, and it is proved that there are three singular points in the system as the bifurcation condition is satisfied. More, the velocity distribution is obtained with a certain initial condition. The results show that the discontinuity resulting from saddle-node bifurcation is removed with the introduction of viscousity, and another kind of velocity change with strong gradient is obtained. However, the change of velocity is continuous with sharp slopes. As a conclusion, all results can provide a fundamental understanding of the nonlinear phenomena relevant to shock wave and other complicated nonlinear phenomena, from viewpoint of nonlinear dynamics.

Abstract:We study the qualitative behavior of the Boussinesq–Burgers equations on a finite interval subject to the Dirichlet type dynamic boundary conditions. Assuming H1×H2 initial data which are compatible with boundary conditions and utilizing energy methods, we show that under appropriate conditions on the dynamic boundary data, there exist unique global-in-time solutions to the initial-boundary value problem, and the solutions converge to the boundary data as time goes to infinity, regardless of the magnitude of the initial data.

Abstract:Burgers-type equations are used to describe certain phenomena in gas dynamics, traffic flow, plasma astrophysics and ocean dynamics. In this paper, a (2+documentclass[12pt]{minimal}usepackage{amsmath}usepackage{wasysym}usepackage{amsfonts}usepackage{amssymb}usepackage{amsbsy}usepackage{mathrsfs}usepackage{upgreek}setlength{oddsidemargin}{-69pt}egin{document}$$+$$end{document}1)-dimensional generalized Burgers system with the variable coefficients in a fluid is investigated. We obtain the Painlevé-integrable constraints of the system with respect to the variable coefficients. Based on the truncated Painlevé expansions, an auto-Bäcklund transformation is constructed, along with some soliton solutions. Via a truncated Painlevé expansions, certain multiple kink solutions are derived. Via a complex-conjugate transformation, some breather solutions, half-periodic kink solutions and hybrid solutions composed of the breathers and kink waves are seen.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of equilibrium index for statically isolated invariant sets of the system $u_t+A u=f_\lambda(u)$ on Banach space $X$ (where $A$ is a sectorial operator with compact resolvent) and present a reduction theorem and an index formula for bifurcating invariant sets near equilibrium points. Then we prove a new global static bifurcation theorem where the crossing number $\mathfrak{m}$ may be even. In particular, in case $\mathfrak{m}=2$, we show that the system undergoes either an attractor/repeller bifurcation, or a global static bifurcation. An illustrating example is also given by considering the bifurcations of the periodic boundary value problem of second-order differential equations.

Abstract:The approximate inertial manifolds (AIMs) of Burgers equation is approached by nonlinear Galerkin methods, and it can be used to capture and study the shock wave numerically in a reduced system with low dimension. Following inertial manifolds, the asymptotic behavior of Burgers equation, an infinite dimensional dissipative dynamic systems, will evolve to a compact set known as a global attractor, which is finite-dimensional, and the nonlinear phenomena are included and captured in such global attractor. In the application, nonlinear Galerkin methods is introduced to approach such inertial manifolds. By this method, the solution of the original system is projected onto the complete space spanned by the eigenfunctions or the modes of the linear operator of Burgers equation, and nonlinear Galerkin method splits the infinite-dimensional phase space into two complementary subspaces: a finite-dimensional one and its infinite-dimensional complement. Then, the post-processed Galerkin's procedure is used to approximate the solution of the reduced system, with the introduction of the interaction between lower and higher modes. Additionally, some numerical examples are presented to make a comparison between the traditional Galerkin method and nonlinear Galerkin method, in particular, some sharp jumping phenomena, which are related to the shock wave, have been captured by the numerical method presented. As the conclusion, it can be drawn that it is possible to completely describe the dynamics on the attractor of a nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) with a finite-dimensional dynamical system, and the study can provide a numerical method for the analysis of the nonlinear continuous dynamic systems and complicated nonlinear phenomena in finite-dimensional dynamic system, whose nonlinear dynamics has been developed completely compared with infinite-dimensional dynamic system. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.
Artificial Boundary Method for Burgers' Equation Using Nonlinear Boundary Conditions

Abstract:This paper discusses the numerical solution of Burgers’ equation on unbounded domains. Two artificial boundaries are introduced and boundary conditions are obtained on the artificial boundaries, which are in nonlinear forms. Then the original problem is reduced to an equivalent problem on a bounded domain. Finite difference method is applied to the reduced problem, and some numerical examples are given to show the effectiveness of the new approach.

Abstract:<p>A generalized Burgers equation with variable coefficients is introduced based on the (2+1)-dimensional Burgers equation. Using the test function method combined with the bilinear form, we obtain the lump solutions to the generalized Burgers equation with variable coefficients. The amplitude and velocity of the extremum point are derived to analyze the propagation of the lump wave. Moreover, we derive and study the mixed solutions including lump-one-kink and lump-two-kink cases. With symbolic computation, two cases of relations among the parameters are yielded corresponding to the solutions. Different and interesting interaction phenomena arise from assigning abundant functions to the variable coefficients. Especially, we find that the shape of kink waves might be parabolic type, and one lump wave can be decomposed into two lump waves. The test function method is applicable for the generalized Burgers equation with variable coefficients, and it will be applied to some other variable-coefficient equations in the future.</p>

Nonlinear stability of shock profiles to Burgers' equation with critical fast diffusion and singularity

Abstract:In this paper we propose the first framework to study Burgers' equation featuring critical fast diffusion in form of $u_t+f(u)_x = (\ln u)_{xx}$. The solution possesses a strong singularity when $u=0$ hence bringing technical challenges. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the asymptotic stability of viscous shocks, particularly those with shock profiles vanishing at the far field $x=+\infty$. To overcome the singularity, we introduce some weight functions and show the nonlinear stability of shock profiles through the weighted energy method. Numerical simulations are also carried out in different cases of fast diffusion with singularity, which illustrate and confirm our theoretical results.

Abstract:We take into consideration two different kinds of two-parameter bifurcations in a class of 3D linear Filippov systems, namely pseudo-Bautin bifurcation and boundary equilibrium bifurcations for two scenarios. The bifurcation conditions for generating rich dynamic behaviors are established. The main objective is to investigate the effects of two parameters interacting simultaneously on a variety of dynamic phenomena. In order to analyze the pseudo-Bautin bifurcation, we build the Poincaré map and analyze the number of fixed points whose types are related to the crossing limit cycles. In order to analyze boundary equilibrium bifurcations for two scenarios, we perform an analysis on the existence and admissibility of equilibria. Besides, a comprehensive investigation on hidden attractors induced by boundary equilibrium bifurcations is conducted. The novelty resides in overcoming the constraints of previous studies that solely take into account the dynamics of individual parameter variations. We innovatively characterize the two-parameter bifurcation mechanism of a new class of Filippov systems, and qualitatively demonstrate the coexistence of hidden attractor and stable pseudo-equilibrium.

Abstract:Burgers’ equation frequently appears in the study of turbulence theory, as well as some other scientific fields. High and low Reynolds numbers play important roles in both modeling and numerical simulation. In this paper, we apply a numerical scheme to solve a two-dimensional time-fractional Burgers equation. The key feature of the proposed method is formed by combining the discontinuous Galerkin method to spatial variables and a finite difference scheme to temporal variables. The corresponding numerical analysis is also presented. Several numerical tests are carried out to demonstrate the theoretical analysis and we present a shock wave phenomenon of the new Burgers model.

Abstract:We study generalized variants of the Burgers equation and the KdV equation on the circle. The main goal of the paper is to show that both extensions can be recast as geodesic equations on a suitable diffeomorphism group of the circle and the corresponding Bott-Virasoro group respectively. As a consequence we obtain that the initial value problem for the Burgers equation with an additional quadratic term is well-posed on a scale of Sobolev spaces on the circle.

Abstract:For Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries(KdVB) equation defined on a finite spatial interval with unknown viscosity, a nonlinear boundary control law and an adaptation law are proposed. Based on Lyapunov direct method, the global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is proved. The stochastic case of Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries equation is also considered. The exponential stability of the delayed KdVB equation is also proved if the delay parameter is sufficiently small.

Abstract:In this paper we consider classical Boussinesq–Burgers system. Lie group method is used to analyze the system in detail, and the system is reduced into ODEs under the Lie symmetries. Then exact traveling wave solutions of classical Boussinesq–Burgers system are obtained by simplest equation method. Further classical Boussinesq–Burgers system is shown to be self-adjoint and the new conservation laws of system are constructed for the first time. The dynamical behaviors of classical Boussinesq–Burgers system are analyzed.

Abstract:We investigate the KdV-Burgers and Gardner equations with dissipation and external perturbation terms by the approach of dynamical systems and Shil'nikov's analysis. The stability of the equilibrium point is considered, and Hopf bifurcations are investigated after a certain scaling that reduces the parameter space of a three-mode dynamical system which now depends only on two parameters. The Hopf curve divides the two-dimensional space into two regions. On the left region the equilibrium point is stable leading to dissapative periodic orbits. While changing the bifurcation parameter given by the velocity of the traveling waves, the equilibrium point becomes unstable and a unique stable limit cycle bifurcates from the origin. This limit cycle is the result of a supercritical Hopf bifurcation which is proved using the Lyapunov coefficient together with the Routh-Hurwitz criterion. On the right side of the Hopf curve, in the case of the KdV-Burgers, we find homoclinic chaos by using Shil'nikov's theorem which requires the construction of a homoclinic orbit, while for the Gardner equation the supercritical Hopf bifurcation leads only to a stable periodic orbit.

Wave Propagation and Stabilization in the Boussinesq-Burgers System

Abstract:This paper considers the existence and stability of traveling wave solutions of the Boussinesq–Burgers system describing the propagation of bores. Assuming the fluid is weakly dispersive, we establish the existence of three different wave profiles by the geometric singular perturbation theory alongside phase plane analysis. We further employ the method of weighted energy estimates to prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the traveling wave solutions against small perturbations. The technique of taking antiderivative is utilized to integrate perturbation functions because of the conservative structure of the Boussinesq–Burgers system. Using a change of variable to deal with the dispersion term, we perform numerical simulations for the Boussinesq–Burgers system to showcase the generation and propagation of various wave profiles in both weak and strong dispersions. The numerical simulations not only confirm our analytical results, but also illustrate that the Boussinesq–Burgers system can generate numerous propagating wave profiles depending on the profiles of initial data and the intensity of fluid dispersion, where in particular the propagation of bores can be generated from the system in the case of strong dispersion.

Abstract:The (2+1)-dimensional Burgers equation has been investigated first from prospective of symmetry by localizing the nonlocal residual symmetries and then studied by a simple generalized tanh expansion method. New symmetry reduction solutions has been obtained by using the standard Lie point symmetry group approach. A new Bäklund transformation for Burgers equation has been given with the generalized tanh expansion method . From this BT, interactive solutions among different nonlinear excitations which is hard to obtain by other methods has also been obtained easily.

Abstract:The dynamical behavior of the perturbed compound KdV–Burgers equation is investigated numerically. It is shown that the chaotic dynamics can occur when the compound KdV–Burgers equation is perturbed by periodic forcing. Different routes to chaos such as period doubling, quasi-periodic routes, and the shapes of strange attractors are observed by applying bifurcation diagrams, the largest Lyapunov exponent, phase projection and Poincaré map.

Abstract:We classify all bifurcation phenomena of the flow near a transcritical singularity in planar singularly perturbed differential systems that do not have a breaking parameter via qualitative analysis and blow‐up technique. Here, the directional blown up vector fields can have several singularities and no first integral that are different from those in the literatures. The obtained local bifurcations are also illustrated by numerical simulations through a modified Leslie–Gower model, whose global dynamics is thereby obtained.
