Abstract:Mite pheromones are important information-carrying chemical messengers that control interspecific and intraspecific behaviour. Due to the potential of the pheromone in controlling of pest mites has been convinced, much attention has been paid to the research on the types, physiological and ecological function, mechanism and chemistry characteristics. This paper reviewed studies on the chemical characteristics, biological function, secretion and reception of the pheromone. The general study methods are introduced in brief and perspectives of applying the pheromone against pest mites and other fields are discussed.

Abstract:Male moths detect and find their mates using species-specific sex pheromones emitted by conspecific females. Olfaction plays a vital role in this behavior. Since the first discovery of an insect sex pheromone from the silkmoth Bombyx mori, great efforts have been spent on understanding the sensing of the pheromones in vivo. Much progress has been made in elucidating the molecular mechanisms that mediate chemoreception in insects in the past few decades. In this review, we focus on pheromone reception and detection in moths, from the molecular to the behavioral level. We trace the information pathway from the capture of pheromone by male antennae, binding and transportation to olfactory receptor neurons, receptor activation, signal transduction, molecule inactivation, through brain processing and behavioral response. We highlight the impact of recent studies and also provide our insights into pheromone processing.

Abstract:Insect pheromones are critical chemical signals that regulate intraspecific behavior and play a key role in the dynamic monitoring and control of pest populations. Historically, research on insect pheromones has primarily focused on lipid-based compounds. However, terpenes and terpenoids, which are widely occurring classes of bioactive compounds, also play significant roles in insect pheromone blends. Over 50 terpene and terpenoid-based pheromones have been identified in over 52 insect species, spanning various orders such as Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Blattodea, Hemiptera, Diptera, and Lepidoptera. These compounds are associated with several types of pheromones, including female or male sex pheromones, aggregation pheromones, alarm pheromones, and aphrodisiac pheromones. Terpenes and terpenoids may act as either primary or secondary components of pheromone blends and influence a wide range of critical insect behaviors. They play essential roles in the physiological and ecological adaptation of insects to their environment. This review provides a comprehensive overview of current research on terpene and terpenoid-based pheromones in insects, examining their structures, types, and physiological and ecological functions. Additionally, we propose future research directions to guide the application of these pheromones in insect behavioral regulation and pest management, while advocating for their broader use in insect pest monitoring and control.

Abstract:Since the first identification of the silkworm moth sex pheromone in 1959, significant research has been reported on identifying and unravelling the sex pheromone mechanisms of hundreds of insect species. In the past two decades, the number of research studies on new insect pheromones, pheromone biosynthesis, mode of action, peripheral olfactory and neural mechanisms, and their practical applications in Integrated Pest Management has increased dramatically. An interdisciplinary approach that uses the advances and new techniques in analytical chemistry, chemical ecology, neurophysiology, genetics, and evolutionary and molecular biology has helped us to better understand the pheromone perception mechanisms and its practical application in agricultural pest management. In this review, we present the most recent developments in pheromone research and its application in the past two decades.

Abstract:Pheromones are chemical signals that are given off by creatures to communicate with other conspecifics. Because of their influence on animal behavior and relationships throughout the animal world, pheromones have fascinated scientists for decades. The newest findings and new perspectives on the intriguing field of pheromones are synthesized in this thorough review article. We investigate the many roles played by pheromones, from mating attraction and territorial marking to alarm signaling and social organization. The chemical diversity of pheromones is explored in depth in this paper, highlighting the variety of substances used by different animals as messengers. We go over the processes involved in pheromone detection and processing to help understand how chemosensory receptors and brain circuits interact in complex ways. Additionally, we discuss the role that pheromones play in ecology and evolution by promoting speciation and adaptation. This review emphasizes both the new research on pheromones in humans as well as their function in the animal world. We investigate the data supporting human pheromones and their possible impact on social and reproductive behaviors. The review aims to offer a detailed exploration and insight into the role and effects of pheromones in the natural world. This includes examining the chemical essence of pheromones and their functionality as communication signals across different species, investigating the specificity of these chemicals to certain species and how non-specific pheromones come about, and delving into the evolution of pheromones with a focus on the physiological and evolutionary mechanisms that drive communication. Additionally, the review seeks to understand the role pheromones play in pest management, specifically how species-specific pheromones can be utilized in eco-friendly pest control strategies. It will also explore the enigmatic impact pheromones have on the behavior and interactions within and among species. Drawing from a variety of sources, such as scientific research articles, studies on pheromone evolution, and articles on pheromone application in pest management, the review aspires to synthesize existing knowledge to provide a comprehensive overview of pheromones and their intriguing influence in nature. This study intends to not only summarize existing information but also encourage further research, shedding light on these cryptic chemical signals and their tremendous influence on the biology and behavior of species. It does this by offering a comprehensive perspective on the complex world of pheromones.

Abstract:Insect biogenic amines play important roles in mediating behavioral and physiological processes as neurotransmitters, neuromodulators and neurohormones. They activate specific G-protein coupled receptors on the cell surfaces to induce downstream signaling pathways. These biogenic amine receptors show different pharmacological properties from their vertebrate counterparts and therefore become potential targets for pest control. However, their physiological functions are not well understood. We summarize our recent progress on insect biogenic amine receptors, and emphasize the characterizations of novel receptors and their functions in behavior and immunity.

Abstract:The olfaction has many important effects on insect behavior,including habitat choosing,food hunting,gathering,tropism,reproduction,signal communication,etc.In order to control the pest more efficiently,it is necessary to explore and understand the mechanism and signal transduction pathway of insect olfaction.Olfactory receptor(OR),as a kind of G protein-coupled receptors,is a key component of the olfactory system.In recent years,more attention is being paid to OR.In this mini-review article,we summarized the process of insect olfaction,the structure and expression regulation of receptor genes,the molecular structure,function and distribution of receptor proteins,and the study of some related ligands.

Abstract:This paper summarized the research advance on male insect sex pheromones, including the identified pheromones, their structure and function, releasing mechanism, and so on. Male insect pheromones are released from different parts of male insect bodies, and they are belonged to many kinds of chemicals. Pheromones of conspecific male insects are usually belonged to the same type chemical, while the chemical structures are different. However, male insects can utilize the little difference to attract female insects, urge the copulating and prevent interspecific mating, etc. Finally a prospect on the future research of male sex pheromone was given.

Abstract:Effects of sublethal doses of insecticides on physiology and behavior of insects draw more and more attentions in recent years.Treatment with sublethal doses of insecticides not only disturb male's sen- sory accuracy for sex pheromone,leading to a wrong integration of and abnormal behavioral response to the exotic signals,but also influence the biosynthesis of sex pheromone by females,leading to changed a- mounts or ratios among pheromone components and anural calling behavior.These effects on both male and female may decrease the mating rate of female and consequently decrease its population of next gener- ation.Sustained pressure of sublethal dose insecticide year by year may even induce the drift of sex pher- omone communication system of insect.Emphasized on pyrethroids and organophosphorus insecticides, the effects of sublethal dose on the sex pheromone communication system and its possible mechanism are reviewed,and several key points for further studies in the area are discussed.

Abstract:The research and development of novel insect regulators have become one of the most potential fields because the control of cerambycid beetles has been proved to be extremely difficult. The studies and applications of sex pheromone, attractive plants and attractants from plants of cerambycid beetles (Cerambycidae, Coleoptera) were reviewed. The sex pheromones are produced by the female or male beetles. Their secretion glands are various with species. The female or male have the similar sensillums to perceive sex pheromones in their antennae. Up to now sex pheromones of 13 cerambycid species have been identified. Bait plants and volatile compounds from host plants can attract beetles. The difficulties and prospect in the research and application of sex pheromones, attractive plants, attractants from plants were also stated.

Abstract:Pheromones play an important role in the biology of insect species. Their use in the development of tools to enhance environmentally benign alternatives to synthetic pesticides is popular. The food industry is a major beneficiary of pheromone use. Pheromones are mostly used in pest monitoring, as monitoring is the cornerstone of all integrated pest management programs. This information is used to focus on identifying the source of the problem and determining the best method of control. Pheromones are also used in controlling pests, through mating disruption, mass trapping, and aggregating insect pests at delivery sites of biological control agents, such as entomopathogens.

In this paper, the male moth sex pheromone and its roles in the pheromone communication between male and female were reviewed. The chemical structures of male sex pheromones from about forty moth species had been identified. The primary functions of male sex pheromones were varied with insect species, including attracting females, inhibiting mating competition from other male individuals of same species, and being a means of species isolation.
