Abstract:In this paper we study error bounds of the abstract linear inequality system (A,C,b): $Ax \leqslant b$, where A is a bounded linear operator from a Banach space X to a Banach space Y partially ordered by a closed convex cone C. We also give some general results on the existence of error bounds for a convex function F; we show in particular that F has an error bound if and only if the directional derivative of the distance function (to the solution set S) at each boundary point of S along any nontangential direction is bounded by the derivative of F. As an application, we prove that if C is a polyhedral cone, then the system (A,C,b) has an error bound. When Y is a Hilbert space, our results can be expressed in terms of the angles between Ax-b-P-C(Ax-b) and Im(A), or in terms of the angles between Im(A) and the nonvertex supporting hyperplanes of C. In the case in which $X=\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and C is an "ice-cream" cone, we identify exactly when (A,C,b) has an error bound.

Abstract:Using the result of the error estimate of the simple extended Newton method established in the present paper for solving abstract inequality systems, we study the error bound property of approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems on Banach spaces with the involved function F being Fréchet differentiable and its derivative F^' satisfying the center-Lipschitz condition (not necessarily the Lipschitz condition) around a point x 0 . Under some mild conditions, we establish results on the existence of the solutions, and the error bound properties for approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems. Applications of these results to finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities on Banach spaces are presented and the error bound properties of approximate solutions of finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities are also established. Our results extend the corresponding results in [ 3 , 18 , 19 ].

Abstract:Using the error bound results established in the present paper for approximate solutions, we study the stability issues when perturbed by possibly nonaffine smooth maps E for the abstract inequality system F >=(K) 0 defined by a (possible nonclosed) convex cone K and a Frechet differentiable function F satisfying the (extended) weak gamma-condition. We provide some sufficient conditions, in terms of the information at a solution x(0), for ensuring the lower semicontinuity and/or the Lipschitz-like continuity at x(0) of the solution mapping for the perturbed system F + E >=(K) 0 with smooth perturbation E. Explicit upper bounds of the Lipschitz-like moduli are also provided.

Abstract:Error bounds are central objects in optimization theory and its applications. They were for a long time restricted only to the theory before becoming over the course of time a field of itself. This paper is devoted to the study of error bounds of a general inequality defined by a proper lower semicontinuous function on an Asplund space. Even though the results of the dual characterization on the error bounds of a general inequality (if one drops the convexity assumption) may not be valid, several necessary dual conditions are still obtained in terms of Fréchet/Mordukhovich subdifferentials of the concerned function at points in the solution set. Moreover, for an inequality defined by a composite-convex function that is to say by a function which is the composition of a convex function with a smooth mapping, such dual conditions also turn out to be sufficient to have the error bound property. Our work is an extension of results on dual characterizations of convex inequalities to the possibly non-convex case.

Abstract:We consider conic inequality systems of the type$F(x)\ge_K 0$, with approximate solution $x_0$ associated to a parameter $\tau$,where $F$ is a twice Fréchet differentiable function between Hilbert spaces $X$ and $Y$, and$\ge_K$ is the partial order in $Y$ defined by anonempty convex (not necessarily closed) cone $K\subseteq Y$.We prove that, under the suitable conditions,the system $F(x)\ge_K 0$is solvable, and the ratio of the distance from $x_0$ to the solution set $S$ over the distance from $F(x_0)$ to the cone $K$ has anupper bound given explicitlyin terms of $\tau$ and $x_0$. We show that the upper bound is sharp.Applications to analytic function inequality/equality systems on Euclidean spaces are given,and the corresponding results of Dedieu [ SIAM J. Optim. , 11 (2000), pp. 411--425] are extended and significantly improved.
The error and perturbation bounds of the general absolute value equations

Abstract:To our knowledge, the error and perturbation bounds of the general absolute value equations are not discussed. In order to fill in this study gap, in this paper, by introducing a class of absolute value functions, we study the error and perturbation bounds of two types of the general absolute value equations (AVEs): $Ax-B|x|=b$ and $Ax-|Bx|=b$. Some useful error bounds and perturbation bounds of the above two types of absolute value equations are provided. Without limiting the matrix type, some computable estimates for the above upper bounds are given. By applying the absolute value equations, a new approach for some existing perturbation bounds of the linear complementarity problem (LCP) in (SIAM J. Optim., 18 (2007), pp. 1250-1265) is provided. Some numerical examples for the AVEs from the LCP are given to show the feasibility of the perturbation bounds.

Abstract:For a general infinite system of convex inequalities in a Banach space, we study the basic constraint qualification and its relationship with other fundamental concepts, including various versions of conditions of Slater type, the Mangasarian--Fromovitz constraint qualification, as well as the Pshenichnyi--Levin--Valadier property introduced by Li, Nahak, and Singer. Applications are given in the restricted range approximation problem, constrained optimization problems, as well as in the approximation problem with constraints by conditionally positive semidefinite functions.

Abstract:Given any linear system (defined by linear inequalities/equalities) in $\Re^n $, Hoffman’s error bound says that the distance from any point $x \in \Re^n $ to the solution set of the linear system is bounded by a constant (independent of x) times a certain residual function evaluated at x. This paper considers arbitrary (possibly nonconvex) polynomial systems (defined by polynomial inequalities/equalities). It is shown that the solution sets of such systems are, in general, Holder continuous as the right-hand side changes, in contrast to the Lipschitzian continuity for the linear case. Also, for any convex quadratic inequality system possessing an interior solution, the authors show that its solution set behaves in a Lipschitzian manner as the right-hand side varies. Abstract:For an inequality system defined by an infinite family of proper convex functions, we introduce some new notions of constraint qualifications in terms of the epigraphs of the conjugates of these functions and study relationships between these new constraint qualifications and other well-known constraint qualifications including the basic constraint qualification studied by Hiriart-Urrutty and Lemarechal and by Li, Nahak, and Singer. Extensions of known results to more general settings are presented, and applications to particular important problems, such as conic programming and approximation theory, are also studied.

Abstract:In this paper, we first present necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of global error bounds for a convex function without additional conditions on the function or the solution set. In particular, we obtain characterizations of such global error bounds in Euclidean spaces, which are often simple to check. Second, we prove that under a suitable assumption the subdifferential of the supremum function of an arbitrary family of convex continuous functions coincides with the convex hull of the subdifferentials of functions corresponding to the active indices at given points. As applications, we study the existence of global error bounds for infinite systems of linear and convex inequalities. Several examples are provided as well to explain the advantages of our results with existing ones in the literature.

Abstract:For an inequality system defined by an infinite family of proper lower semicontinuous convex functions in normed linear space, we consider the Farkas-Minkowski (FM for short) type qualification and the basic constraint qualification (BCQ for short). By employing a new approach based on some new results established here on the SECQ (sum of epigraphs constraint qualification) for families of closed convex sets, some sufficient conditions involving further relaxing Slater type conditions for ensuring the FM qualification are provided. As applications, new sufficient conditions for ensuring the BCQ are given. These results significantly improve the corresponding ones in [C. Li and K. F. Ng, SIAM T. Optim., 15 (2005), pp. 488-512] and [C. Li, X. P. Zhao, and Y. H. Hu, SIAM J. Optim., 23 (2013), pp. 2208-2230], and they are obtained without the key continuity assumption on the sup-function of the inequality system which the previous works depend heavily on. Some examples are also presented to illustrate the applicability of our results.

Abstract:Linear complementarity problem (LCP) presents many nice properties when the associated matrix belongs to some special matrix classes, especially H-matrices. In this paper, we put forward a new subclass of H-matrices, called S-QN matrices, which is the proper generalization of the QN matrices. We have proved that for a given S-QN matrix A, there exists a diagonal scaling matrix W such that AW is a QN matrix. Then, we present two kinds of error bounds for LCP of S-QN matrices. The Error Bound I generalizes the error bound for LCP of QN matrices. The Error Bound II overcomes the limitation that the Error Bound I cannot be used. Numerical examples illustrate that the Error Bound I is better than other previous bounds for H-matrices in some cases. Moreover, in some special cases, the Error Bound II can improve considerably the Error Bound I.

Abstract:Some global error bounds with undetermined parameters, which are not always valid, for the extended vertical linear complementarity problems (LCP) of CKV-type matrices and CKV-type -matrices, are presented by Yan and Wang (Jpn. J. Ind. Appl. Math. 41:129–150, 2024). In this paper, new global error bounds for the extended vertical LCP of CKV-type matrices and CKV-type -matrices are given, which depend only on the entries of the involved matrices. Numerical examples show that the new bounds are better than those provided in Zhang et al. (Comput. Optim. Appl. 42(3):335–352, 2009) and Wang et al. (Comput. Appl. Math. 40:148, 2021) in some cases.
