Abstract:The notion of the “Self” is one of the most critical issues in contemporary cognitive science. Whether the self is a single and independent real entity or a collection of constantly changing experiences has been at the core of debates between the substance theory and the illusion theory. Compared to the neglect of this issue in Western tradition studies, the meticulous practice of mindfulness/awareness in Eastern research traditions has long focused on this contradiction. This paper navigates the intricate dimensions of the “Self” by weaving together the Oriental framework of the five aggregates with the Middle Way, the principles of constructivism, and the empirical methodologies of experimental philosophy. This approach bridges the gap by synthesizing introspective first-person experiences with objective third-person scientific observations to enrich the understanding of self-constructivism. The implications of these findings extend into the practical realms of psychology and philosophy, offering a scaffold for future research to elucidate the multifaceted nature of the self further.

In the contexts of ethics and religion, the body used to be considered the shackles and prison of the soul. This idea led to the prevalence of Puritanism, making the body absent of history and civilization’s record. So the body loses the right to express and does not exist in the field of reality. Abstract:It has a unique academic value to discuss the state of belief and its cultural meaning of rural Romanists under the extreme situation of 1900. The state of belief expressed in consciousness of soul, worship of divine gongfu and vision of body characterizes the interaction between the doxies of Christianity and the elements of local Chinese culture. It reveals that the conflict between the Boxers and the Christianity is not an absolute opposition of two kinds of belief systems, but rather the different explanations and reconstructions of local cultural resources.

Abstract:Though means love of in Greek,modern philosophy concerns more about knowledge than wisdom.It almost takes the pursuit of knowledge as its only purpose and neglects wisdom.However,both Chinese philosophy and Western philosophy have a tradition of paying attention to wisdom.For both of them,wisdom is superior to knowledge.Wisdom is speculation about the essence of knowledge and life,and the guide of praxis.Among modern Chinese philosophers,Feng Qi was the only one who reflected on the problem of wisdom.For Feng,wisdom was philosophical wisdom and the theory about xing and Dao.It was capability of virtue.That Feng defined wisdom as knowing made it lose its relevance to praxis.

There have been four broad views: God or a soul is necessary for meaning in our lives; neither is necessary for it; one or both would greatly enhance the meaning in our lives; one or both would substantially detract from it. This Element familiarizes readers with all four positions, paying particular attention to the latter two, and also presents prima facie objections to them, points out gaps in research agendas and suggests argumentative strategies that merit development.

Abstract:Soul belief is a universal of human culture and belief in multiple souls is common, especially in pre-modern traditions. This essay illustrates how a three-folded structure appears in the soul concepts of Mongolian shamanistic traditions. The reported accounts of the three souls among various Mongolian ethnic groups are somewhat divergent — especially in their consciousness-related attributes — which may reflect the cultural bias of data collectors, inconsistencies between data providers, and the evolution of these concepts due to historical events, socio-economic changes, and external cultural influences. Despite these confounding effects, the soul concept of Mongolian shamanism is similar in its pluralism to the beliefs of many other cultures. Mongolian Indigenous concepts and their descriptions reveal key elements of consciousness. Although these soul concepts evoke spiritual interpretations, they nevertheless reflect aspects of an innately-disposed mindset which extends conceptualizations of consciousness beyond mind-body dualism.

Abstract:Objective: To describe representative Western philosophical, theological, and scientific ideas regarding the nature and location of the soul from the Egyptians to the contemporary period; and to determine the principal themes that have structured the history of the development of the concept of the soul and the implications of the concept of the soul for medical theory and practice. Methods: We surveyed the ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman periods, the early, Medieval, and late Christian eras, as well as the Renaissance, Enlightenment, and Modern periods to determine the most salient ideas regarding the nature and location of the soul. Results: In the history of Western theological, philosophical, and scientific/medical thought, there exist 2 dominant and, in many respects, incompatible concepts of the soul: one that understands the soul to be spiritual and immortal, and another that understands the soul to be material and mortal. In both cases, the soul has been described as being located in a specific organ or anatomic structure or as pan-corporeal, pervading the entire body, and, in some instances, trans-human and even pan-cosmological. Moreover, efforts to discern the nature and location of the soul have, throughout Western history, stimulated physiological exploration as well as theoretical understanding of human anatomy. The search for the soul has, in other words, led to a deepening of our scientific knowledge regarding the physiological and, in particular, cardiovascular and neurological nature of human beings. In addition, in virtually every period, the concept of the soul has shaped how societies thought about, evaluated, and understood the moral legitimacy of scientific and medical procedures: from performing abortions and autopsies to engaging in stem cell research and genetic engineering. Conclusion: Our work enriches our shared understanding of the soul by describing some of the key formulations regarding the nature and location of the soul by philosophers, theologians, and physicians. In doing so, we are better able to appreciate the significant role that the concept of the soul has played in the development of Western scientific, medical, and spiritual life. Although ideas about the soul have changed significantly throughout Western history, the idea of the soul as being real and essential to one's personhood has been, and remains, pervasive throughout every period of Western history.

Abstract:The new development of contemporary Chinese philosophy research falls into six categories. The first is the restoration of Chinese philosophical research in an academic sense. The second is that identification with Chinese culture promotes a sympathetic understanding of Chinese philosophy. The third is the wealth of knowledge that has been gained on early Chinese philosophy from the abundance of excavated literature. The fourth is the reflection on the pursuit of methodology intrinsic to Chinese philosophy. The fifth concerns the convergence of the studies of classics and masters and the "turn to classics studies." The sixth involves probing into historical research to explore and develop new principles and reasons for Chinese philosophy. Chinese philosophy is forming a more virtuous cycle of interpretation through the interaction between academic and political, tradition and modernity, commensurability and difference, studies of classics passed down through the ages and excavated literature, studies of classics and masters, as well as philosophy and its history.

Abstract:The phrase East Asian (dong ya) comes from Japanese with painful wartime memories. Nowadays this phrase has become a cultural notion, a subject which draws much academic attention. Since the last decade,“East Asian Confucianism”, through the endeavor of Taiwan academia, has become an independent research field which has grown into the stage when its outcomes are ready to be summarized and reflected. Abstract:Chinese philosophy is practical in orientation. This practical orientation is consistent with field philosophy, which aims to break the disciplinary mode of knowledge production and establish interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary modes, so as to overcome 'disciplinary capture' and enhance the social relevance of philosophy. For example, Chinese philosophy values action more than commentary and discussion more than writing. Chinese philosophy has these characteristics because it is based on the <i>Si Xue</i> (private learning or private school) institution of ancient times. While Chinese philosophy and field philosophy have a number of characteristics in common, this does not mean that Chinese philosophy and field philosophy are identical. They possess a family resemblance, with each of them having their own independence and inherent regularities. Chinese philosophy belongs to ancient philosophy, coming from premodern times, and field philosophy is a postmodern philosophy. Even so, they still can learn from each other.

Abstract:The year 1956 witnessed a historical transition in the realm of ideology and culture in China after a long process of twists and turns.Just around the year,Fudan University together with other key universities in China established or reestablished their philosophy departments with disciplines on the Western philosophy,including its contemporary part.The anti-rightist movement of 1957 choked the progress and the situation was much worse in the Cultural Revolution,not until the end of which did the study resumed.Since the reform and opening,the study in this discipline has got through three main stages: to start from scratch;to abandon the simplified pattern of critique and turn to objective and practical studies;to integrate the discipline with the study of Marxist philosophy. It has made great progress in the academic faculty and the width and depth of the research,but inadequacies remain.It is necessary to study the contemporary Western philosophy further both in individual case and on the whole.To communicate with Chinese traditional philosophy and Marxist philosophy,this principle is supposed to draw on positive points and transcend the limits.

Abstract:I will argue for three points. The first is on the need to make Chinese philosophy a world philosophy. The second point is that, in order to promote Chinese philosophy as a world philosophy we should not historicize philosophy. Philosophy and history are two different disciplines. As important as historical context is, overemphasizing it or even taking philosophy merely as a matter of intellectual history makes it difficult for non-specialists to study Chinese philosophy, and is therefore counter-productive to advancing it as a world philosophy. A good balance is thus needed in order to develop Chinese philosophy in response to contemporary needs and not to exclude a large number of non-specialists from studying and drawing on it. My third point is that comparative philosophy is the most effective way to study, examine and develop Chinese philosophy as a world philosophy. Comparative philosophy provides a much needed bridge across different cultures for philosophy to connect on the world stage.

Abstract:As a pragmatist philosopher, Peirce made a rich philosophical arguments on epistemology, methodology of belief, and true belief.In Peirce’s view, people can perceive belief through inner feelings and external actions.The connotation and meaning of the belief are clarified by the effects and actual meanings produced by the belief.The fixation of belief should adhere to the methodology combining inquiry, the method of science, and logical reasoning closely.The true belief is the goal of infinite inquiry with the effort of the community, be fixed according to the reality thoroughly, and be owned with the nature of satisfaction and indefeasibility.Peirce’s theory of belief has the inevitable theoretical defects of pragmatism philosophy, but at the same time, it has a certain enlightenment value for answering the question of whether belief can be taught, what to teach and how to teach to strengthen the ideals and beliefs of adolescents in contemporary China’s ideal and belief education.

Abstract:Abstract: The purpose of the scientific article is a comparative analysis of the philosophy of consciousness in the context of Western and Eastern theory. In the process of the three stages of scientific research, the authors used general scientific and unique methods, such as analysis, synthesis, generalization, induction, comparative, and content analysis methods. The Western and Eastern philosophy representatives’ scientific and methodological works are analyzed to explain the problem of human consciousness. The features of Islamic monotheism in Al-Farabi’s views, as well as the relationship between thinking and body in Ibn Sina’s theory, are considered. The interpretation of the philosophy of consciousness of the Western region is presented on the example of Dennett’s heterophenomenology and physicalism, the “Chinese room” thought experiment by Searle and others. The fundamental similarities and differences in explaining the philosophy of consciousness by Western and Eastern scientists are determined. The author’s analytical criticism of these philosophical trends is provided.
