Abstract:The paper summarizes a series of adaptable changes of plants under different adversity conditions,including the morphological structure of plant roots,leaves and so on;the physiological and biochemical reaction of plant to hormone,osmoregulation matter,antioxidase system and calcium ion,and it also expounds the research progress in the response of protein and gene to adversity stress.The author considers that the future study emphasis should be laid on the cross-adaptation of plants to several adversity stresses.

Abstract:Plants in nature are continuously exposed to several biotic and abiotic stresses. Among these stresses, drought stress is one of the most adverse factors of plant growth and productivity and considered a severe threat for sustainable crop production in the conditions on changing climate. Drought triggers a wide variety of plant responses, ranging from cellular metabolism to changes in growth rates and crop yields. Understanding the biochemical and molecular responses to drought is essential for a holistic perception of plant resistance mechanisms to water-limited conditions. This review describes some aspects of drought induced changes in morphological, physiological and biochemical changes in plants. Drought stress progressively decreases CO2 assimilation rates due to reduced stomatal conductance. It reduces leaf size, stems extension and root proliferation, disturbs plant water relations and reduces water-use efficiency. It disrupts photosynthetic pigments and reduces the gas exchange leading to a reduction in plant growth and productivity. The critical roles of osmolyte accumulation under drought stress conditions have been actively researched to understand the tolerance of plants to dehydration. In addition, drought stress-induced generation of active oxygen species is well recognized at the cellular level and is tightly controlled at both the production and consumption levels, through increased antioxidative systems. This review focuses on the ability and strategies of higher plants to respond and adapt to drought stress.

Abstract:[Objective] The endurance of a plant to drought stress was a reflection of its strength of drought resistance,selecting the varieties strong in drought-resistant ability can provide reference for the breeding of good varieties.[Method]This article explored the status quo and existing problems in the studies on plant drought stress.[Result]The result indicated the impact of drought stress on the physiology,biochemistry and morphological structure of plants.[Conclusion]It is supposed to provide references for further research on the molecular mechanism of plant drought resistance and the cultivation of new drought resistant varieties.

Abstract:Drought and waterlogging seriously affect the growth of plants and are considered severe constraints on agricultural and forestry productivity; their frequency and degree have increased over time due to global climate change. The morphology, photosynthetic activity, antioxidant enzyme system and hormone levels of plants could change in response to water stress. The mechanisms of these changes are introduced in this review, along with research on key transcription factors and genes. Both drought and waterlogging stress similarly impact leaf morphology (such as wilting and crimping) and inhibit photosynthesis. The former affects the absorption and transportation mechanisms of plants, and the lack of water and nutrients inhibits the formation of chlorophyll, which leads to reduced photosynthetic capacity. Constitutive overexpression of 9-cis-epoxydioxygenase (NCED) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), key enzymes in abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis, increases drought resistance. The latter forces leaf stomata to close in response to chemical signals, which are produced by the roots and transferred aboveground, affecting the absorption capacity of CO2, and reducing photosynthetic substrates. The root system produces adventitious roots and forms aerenchymal to adapt the stresses. Ethylene (ETH) is the main response hormone of plants to waterlogging stress, and is a member of the ERFVII subfamily, which includes response factors involved in hypoxia-induced gene expression, and responds to energy expenditure through anaerobic respiration. There are two potential adaptation mechanisms of plants ("static" or "escape") through ETH-mediated gibberellin (GA) dynamic equilibrium to waterlogging stress in the present studies. Plant signal transduction pathways, after receiving stress stimulus signals as well as the regulatory mechanism of the subsequent synthesis of pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC) and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) enzymes to produce ethanol under a hypoxic environment caused by waterlogging, should be considered. This review provides a theoretical basis for plants to improve water stress tolerance and water-resistant breeding.

Abstract:With the global climate anomalies and the destruction of ecological balance, the water shortage has become a serious ecological problem facing all mankind, and drought has become a key factor restricting the development of agricultural production. Therefore, it is essential to study the drought tolerance of crops. Based on previous studies, we reviewed the effects of drought stress on plant morphology and physiology, including the changes of external morphology and internal structure of root, stem, and leaf, the effects of drought stress on osmotic regulation substances, drought-induced proteins, and active oxygen metabolism of plants. In this paper, the main drought stress signals and signal transduction pathways in plants are described, and the functional genes and regulatory genes related to drought stress are listed, respectively. We summarize the above aspects to provide valuable background knowledge and theoretical basis for future agriculture, forestry breeding, and cultivation.

Abstract:Water stress adversely impacts many aspects of the physiology of plants, especially photosynthetic capacity. If the stress is prolonged, plant growth, and productivity are severely diminished. Plants have evolved complex physiological and biochemical adaptations to adjust and adapt to a variety of environmental stresses. The molecular and physiological mechanisms associated with water-stress tolerance and water-use efficiency have been extensively studied. The systems that regulate plant adaptation to water stress through a sophisticated regulatory network are the subject of the current review. Molecular mechanisms that plants use to increase stress tolerance, maintain appropriate hormone homeostasis and responses and prevent excess light damage, are also discussed. An understanding of how these systems are regulated and ameliorate the impact of water stress on plant productivity will provide the information needed to improve plant stress tolerance using biotechnology, while maintaining the yield and quality of crops.

Abstract:Drought alone causes more annual loss in crop yield than all pathogens combined. To adapt to moisture gradients in soil, plants alter their physiology, modify root growth and architecture, and close stomata on their aboveground segments. These tissue-specific responses modify the flux of cellular signals, resulting in early flowering or stunted growth and, often, reduced yield. Physiological and molecular analyses of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana have identified phytohormone signaling as key for regulating the response to drought or water insufficiency. Here we discuss how engineering hormone signaling in specific cells and cellular domains can facilitate improved plant responses to drought. We explore current knowledge and future questions central to the quest to produce high-yield, drought-resistant crops.

Abstract:When plants are suffered by drought stress, they can through cells apperceive and transmit drought signal, regulate gene expression and produce new proteins, so as to cause many morphological, physiological and biochemiscal changes. Drought stress significantly and morphologically affects cells, organs, individuals and populations of plants, and also physiologically and biochemically impacts their photosynthesis, osmoregulation and antioxidant system. Molecular responses of plants to drought stress are complicated, which induces the syntheses of some new genes, such as NCED and dehydrin genes, and CBF and DREB transcription factors. Abstract:This paper summarizes various adaptive ways that plants display when subjected to waterlogging of the soil or deeper submergence. On this basis, it reviews the advances in plants′ responses to waterlogging stress, including the formation of apoplastic barrier, the oxytropism of root growth, the changes of fermentation paths and plant hormones, the induction of anaetobicpolypeptides and acclimation to hypoxic pretreatment, in recent years. The research incorporates molecular biology and genetics, cell physiology, biochemistry, hormone physiology, whole plant physiology and ecology.

Abstract:The frequency and intensity of droughts have increased in recent decades, and climate change is a major driver of global droughts. Among abiotic stress factors, drought is one of the major threats to agricultural production. In order to further understand the response mechanism of plants to drought stress and the adaption ability of plants to drought stress, this studyretrospectively reviews the plant morphological structure and ultrastructure, photosynthesis, stomatal regulation mechanism, reactive oxygen species metabolism and plant antioxidant protection mechanism, plant osmotic regulation mechanism, plant endogenous hormone regulation mechanism, xylem hydraulic characteristics, carbon-nitrogen metabolism and its source-sink relationship, autophagy defense mechanism and molecular response mechanism against drought stress. Meanwhile, we believe that plant responses to drought stress should also involve the soil and rhizosphere environment. Therefore, the stability of soil aggregates, rhizosphere soil nutrients, plant root exudates, rhizosphere soil enzyme activity, rhizosphere soil microorganisms, soil respiration, soil carbon and nitrogen emissions under drought stress are also reviewed. Finally, this study summarizes the response network of the plant-soil-rhizosphere environment to drought stress,discusses regulatory measures to alleviate the adverse effects of drought stress and proposes future research directions.

Abstract:Drought, a significant environmental challenge, presents a substantial risk to worldwide agriculture and the security of food supplies. In response, plants can perceive stimuli from their environment and activate defense pathways via various modulating networks to cope with stress. Drought tolerance, a multifaceted attribute, can be dissected into distinct contributing mechanisms and factors. Osmotic stress, dehydration stress, dysfunction of plasma and endosome membranes, loss of cellular turgidity, inhibition of metabolite synthesis, cellular energy depletion, impaired chloroplast function, and oxidative stress are among the most critical consequences of drought on plant cells. Understanding the intricate interplay of these physiological and molecular responses provides insights into the adaptive strategies plants employ to navigate through drought stress. Plant cells express various mechanisms to withstand and reverse the cellular effects of drought stress. These mechanisms include osmotic adjustment to preserve cellular turgor, synthesis of protective proteins like dehydrins, and triggering antioxidant systems to counterbalance oxidative stress. A better understanding of drought tolerance is crucial for devising specific methods to improve crop resilience and promote sustainable agricultural practices in environments with limited water resources. This review explores the physiological and molecular responses employed by plants to address the challenges of drought stress.

Abstract:Drought is one of the most important abiotic factors limiting plant growth, development and survival. Due to global warming, the drought episodes in the future will become more frequent and severe. Therefore, the plant responses to drought stress, especially the drought-resistant mechanisms, have been a focus of the studies. This paper summarized the plant growth and physiological responses to drought stress, and proposed a staged response strategy of plants for the adaptation to natural drought stress. Overall, from drought initiation to drought-induced death, plants experienced five stress stages with increasing drought intensity, i. e., drought initiation-mild drought-moderate drought-severe drought-extreme drought, and the plant responsive and adaptive process in this whole event could be acute response-active adaptation to mild and severe drought stresses-passive adaptation to extreme drought stress. The essential function of the plant drought-resistant mechanisms varied with drought stress stages. Some key scientific problems and research directions about the staged response characteristics of plants to drought stress needed to be solved urgently in the future were pointed out.

Abstract:Drought stress is one of the major environmental stresses that affect plant survival and growth. The effects of drought can be mitigated by a number of strategies, including morphological, physiological and molecular acclimation to drought. Many species exhibit changes in partitioning in favor of the structures involved in water uptake and transport, and increase water use efficiency (WUE) in response to water deficits. Greater allocation to root system may increase the amount of soil water accessible for a plant. Changes in foliage area/sapwood area ratio also involve in the water potential gradient from root to shoot. Synthesis and accumulation of osmoprotectants can increase the drought tolerance of plant. Osmotic adjustment in response to drought stress allows the normal functioning of physiological processes to take place. Xanthophylls cycle-dependent thermal dissipation and the integrated system of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants are involved in the photoprotective mechanisms during the periods of drought. Water-stress related genes are induced by abscisic acid (ABA), which apparently is involved in the signal transduction during drought stress. In this review, we examine the roles of morphological changes, osmotic adjustment, xylem cavitation, photosynthesis, WUE, ABA and molecular mechanism for acclimation and adaptation of conifers to drought stress. Moreover, the use of physiological characteristics as selection criteria for drought tolerance is also discussed. During water stress, drought-tolerant mechanisms are not independent and they are needed to integrate different aspects about whole plant responses. Ref 99

Abstract:Drought stress is a condition that in specific climate contexts results in insufficient water availability and often limits plant productivity through perturbing development and reducing plant growth and survival. Plants use senescence of old leaves and dormancy of buds and seeds to survive extreme environmental conditions. The plant hormone ABA accumulates after drought stress, and increases plant survival by inducing quick responses such as stomatal closure, and long-term responses such as extended growth inhibition, osmotic regulation, accumulation of cuticular wax, senescence, abscission and dormancy. Here we focus on how the long-term ABA responses contribute to plant survival during severe drought stress. Leaf senescence and abscission of older leaves reduce total plant transpirational water loss and increase the transfer of nutrients to meristems and to some storage tissues. Osmotic regulation favors water consumption in sink tissues, and accumulation of cuticular wax helps to seal the plant surface and limits non-stomatal water loss.

Abstract:With global warming, drought stress is becoming increasingly severe, causing serious impacts on crop yield and quality. In order to survive under adverse conditions such as drought stress, plants have evolved a certain mechanism to cope. The tolerance to drought stress is mainly improved through the synergistic effect of regulatory pathways, such as transcription factors, phytohormone, stomatal movement, osmotic substances, sRNA, and antioxidant systems. This study summarizes the research progress on plant drought resistance, in order to provide a reference for improving plant drought resistance and cultivating drought-resistant varieties through genetic engineering technology.
