Abstract:The unique qualities of nickel-titanium alloys (NiTinol) make them promising materials for biomedical applications. Despite the potential benefits, certain issues, such as nickel leaching, raise health concerns. The necessity of treating bare NiTinol before human implantation emphasizes the need for surface modifications that improve biocompatibility without sacrificing the inherent qualities of the alloy. Although NiTinol alloys have been used since the 1960s, a comprehensive review on the surface modification of these alloys is still lacking. In this review article, we have examined all commercially available surface modification techniques applied to NiTinol alloys in depth, including mechanical polishing, chemical etching, heat treatment, ion implantation techniques, coating approaches, sterilization methods, and alloying strategies. The benefits and drawbacks of each technique are explored, with an emphasis on the diverse effects they have on appearance, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, cell growth, and hemocompatibility. This paper also discusses the current advancements and research on the surface modification of NiTinol as well as its potential for use in biomedical applications. The overall goal of this review is to provide guidance for choosing the right surface treatments that will improve the functionality of NiTi alloys in various biomedical devices.
