Abstract:Polystyrene supported TiCl4 (Ps-TiCl4) and polystyrene supported FeCl3 (Ps-FeCl3) were prepared by coordinating Lewis acids with polystyrene. The catalysts were characterized by TGA, BET, SEM, IR and pyridine-adsorbed IR. The loading of Ps-TiCl4 and Ps-FeCl3 were 0.35 and 0.3 mmol center dot g-1 respectively. Both catalysts were found to be efficient for the tetrahydropyranylation and detetrahydropyranylation of various alcohols and phenols in different solvents. Two catalysts can be recovered and reused for five times with good activity.

Abstract:Poly (styrene-co-acrylic acid) (PSA )/MgCl2 complex was coated on TiCl3 catalyst (SLC-S catalyst) supported on SiO2 using sol-gel method,and the Ziegler-Natta hybrid catalysts were prepared.The resulting catalysts were characterized by a series of techniques,namely Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR),laser scattering particle analyzer and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM).It was found that the hybrid catalysts had a core-shell structure and the thicknesses of membrane of HC-5 (PSA/SLC-S = 5 wt% ) catalyst and HC-20 (PSA/SLC-S = 20 wt% ) catalyst were 1.5 and 3 μm,respectively.Three different kinds of catalysts were used for gas phase ethylene polymerization.The effects of thickness of the membrane in hybrid catalysts on the activity and the profile of the polymerization kinetic curves of the catalysts were investigated.The results indicated that the HC-20 catalyst had a good ethylene polymerization activity and its kinetic curve was stable with an inductive period,while HC-5 catalyst demonstrated a fast decay during polymerization and its activity and kinetic curve both resembled the traditional TiCl3 catalyst.Besides,the properties of the polyethylene made by hybrid catalysts under different hydrogen contents were obtained.It is obvious that the thickness of membranes could affect the hydrogen response of the hybrid catalysts and the molecular weight distribution of the resultant polyethylene.

Abstract:Polymer-coated particles were used to develop a novel catalyst technology for the production of broad/bimodal polyethylene in a single reactor. The methods for broad/bimodal polyethylene by catalyst technology, such as hybrid catalyst, composite support, and diffusion control, were combined together in this catalyst technology. An improved phase inversion method was used to fabricate poly[styrene-co-(acrylic acid)] (PSA) coated silica particles (SiO2/PSA). Core shell structure was obviously observed in the resulting SiO2/PSA. SiO2/PSA showed a significant barrier effect to the diffusion of 1-hexene and hexane but but no barrier effect to the diffusion of ethylene. This means the PSA layer has a selective barrier effect to the diffusion of small molecules. PSA-coated silica particles were used to support (n-BuCp)(2)ZrCl2/TiCl4, TiCl3/TiCl4, and Cp2ZrCl2/Fe based hybrid catalysts. The ethylene polymerization results indicated that the two different active sites can perform independently, and broad/bimodal polyethylene was obtained by all hybrid catalysts. The polydispersity index of the resulting polyethylene was as high as 18.13, even 44.5. The style of the activity profile was determined by whether the active sites in the core needed a cocatalyst or not.
Immobilizing TiCl3/(n-BuCp)2ZrCl2 catalyst on organic/inorganic support for gas-phase ethylene polymerization

Abstract:Styrene and acrylic copolymer(PSA)modified by n-BuSnCl3 was coated on commercial M-1 catalyst(SiO2/MgCl2-TiCl3).Then(n-BuCp)2ZrCl2 was immobilized on the modified PSA to obtain a hybrid catalyst.The catalyst performance for gas-phase ethylene polymerization was measured.The structure and morphology of the modified support was characterized by BET,SEM,FTIR and particle size analysis.It was found that n-BuSnCl3 was a relative weak modifier,the change of support structure not obvious and there was interaction between n-BuSnCl3 and carboxyl group of PSA.The results of ethylene polymerization showed that the modified catalyst had high activity,2.56×107 g PE·(mol Zr)-1·h-1·MPa-1.The copolymerization ability and hydrogen responsibility of the catalyst were also investigated.The low density polyethylene blends with high molecular weight and the high density one with low molecular weight can be obtained by using the hybrid catalyst.The obtained polyethylene blends had broad molecular weight distribution.Furthermore,the polymer obtained at different polymerization time was studied in order to observe the fragmentation behavior of PSA support during the gas-phase polymerization.Finally,the results of gas-phase polymerization were compared with that in slurry phase polymerization.
An Improved Phase-Inversion Process for the Preparation of Silica/Poly[Styrene-Co-(Acrylic Acid)] Core-Shell Microspheres: Synthesis and Application in the Field of Polyolefin Catalysis

Abstract:Spherical and well-dispersed silica/poly[styrene-co-(acrylic acid)] (SiO2/PSA) core-shell particles have been synthesized using an improved phase-inversion process. The resulting particles were successfully used as supports for polyolefin catalysts in the production of polyethylene with broadmolecular weight distribution. Through the vapor phase, instead of the liquid phase in the traditional process, a non-solvent was introduced into a mixture of micrometer-sized SiO2 and PSA solution. The core-shell structure of the resulting SiO2/PSA microspheres was confirmed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transfer infrared spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis and measurement of nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. In order to avoid agglomeration of particles and to obtain a good dispersion of the SiO2/PSA core-shell microspheres, the non-solvent was added slowly. As the concentration of PSA solution increased, the surface morphology of the core-shell particles became looser and more irregular. However, the surface area and the pore volume remained the same under varying PSA concentrations. The SiO2/PSA core-shell microspheres obtained were used as a catalyst carrier system in which the core supported (n-BuCp)(2)ZrCl2 and the shell supported TiCl4. Ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization results indicated that the zirconocene and titanium-based Ziegler-Natta catalysts were compatible in the hybrid catalyst, showing high activities. Abstract:By immobilizing titanium-based ZieglerNatta catalyst on composite support, SiO2/MgCl2 center dot x(1,4-butanediol)/poly[styrene-co-(acrylic acid)] (SiO2/MgCl2 center dot xBD/PSA) and SiO2/MgCl2 center dot xBD/PSA/TiCl4 (SMPT) were synthesized for ethylene polymerization. SiO2/MgCl2 center dot xBD/TiCl4 without PSA was also prepared for comparison. The results of energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, SEM, and thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that SMPT had a unique core-mantle-shell structure. The PSA layer can be considered as a barrier for the mass-transfer of reactants based on the results of self-diffusion measurement by pulsed field gradient NMR and ethylene polymerization. The polyethylene produced by SMPT showed high molecular weight (MW) and broad molecular weight distribution (MWD). The influences of PSA content, hydrogen, and comonomer on the ethylene polymerization behavior were also investigated. The results further demonstrated that the PSA layer in the composite support had different diffusion capabilities to the reactants. The physical properties of the produced polyethylene implied the possibility to control the MW and MWD of polyethylene by the manipulation of PSA layer. Abstract:Hybrid catalyst was devised based on the phase inversion method.The catalyst was as follows:PSA was the organic part for binding(n-BuCp)2ZrCl2,and SiO2/MgCl2 was the inorganic part to support TiCl3.As an alternative to a tandem or cascade type process,a two-step polymerization method was carried out in a single reactor on laboratory scale.Utilizing this two-step slurry polymerization process,polyethylene blends of ultra high molecular weight copolymer and low molecular weight homo-polymer were produced.Different fractions of polymer blends were obtained according to the polymerization time in each stage.The miscibility and thermal behavior of the blends were investigated by different scanning calorimetry(DSC)techniques and rheology methods.Finally,the miscibilities of the blends obtained by this method were compared with the blends obtained by traditional mechanical blending.

Abstract:Soluble poly[styrene-co-(acrylic acid)] (PSA) modified by magnesium compounds was used to support TiCl4. For ethylene polymerization, four catalysts were synthesized, namely PSA/TiCl4, PSA/MgCl2/TiCl4, PSA/(n-Bu)MgCl/TiCl4, and PSA/(n-Bu)(2)Mg/TiCl4. The catalysts were characterized by a set of complementary techniques including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and element analysis. Synthesis mechanisms of polymer-supported TiCl4 catalysts were proposed according to their chemical environments and physical structures. The binding energy of Ti 2p in PSA/TiCl4 was extremely low as TiCl4 attracted excessive electrons from -COOH groups. Furthermore, the chain structure of PSA was destroyed because of intensive reactions taking place in PSA/TiCl4. With addition of (n-Bu) MgCl or (n-Bu)(2)Mg, -COOH became -COOMg- which then reacted with TiCl4 in synthesis of PSA/(n-Bu) MgCl/TiCl4 and PSA/(n-Bu)(2)Mg/TiCl4. Although MgCl2 coordinated with -COOH first, TiCl4 would substitute MgCl2 to coordinate with -COOH in PSA/MgCl2/TiCl4. Due to the different synthesis mechanisms, the four polymer-supported catalysts correspondingly showed various particle morphologies. Abstract:In order to produce broad/bimodal molecular weight polyethylene in a single reactor,strengthen the ethylene polymerization process,to reduce the investment in production and energy consumption,and achieve the molecular scale mixing in situ chemical synthesis,a diffusion/barrier composite support was prepared to regulate and control properties of polyethylene.Based on phase inversion principle,spherical and well-dispersed polymer-coated particles(SiO2/PSA) were successfully prepared using silica(SiO2) and poly[styrene-co-(acrylic acid)](PSA).Then we successfully prepared supported hybrid catalysts with different catalyst divided by PSA layer.With ethylene,hydrogen and α-olefin diffuse differently in the PSA layer,and active components such as Cp2ZrCl2,TiCl3 and TiCl4 behave differently in dynamic,we construct two micro-chemical environment,inside and outside of the PSA layer,so that active component prepares low Mw,low branched polymer chains and high Mw,high branched polymer chains separately in different micro-chemical environment.Meanwhile,we could regulate the active component and the thickness of PSA layer to control the molecular weight distribution of polyethylene.
REMARKABLY ACTIVE NON-METALLOCENE ETHYLENE POLYMERIZATION CATALYSTS

Abstract:The bis(tri-tert-butylphosphinimide) complexes (t-Bu3PN)2TiCl2 (1) and (t-Bu3PN)2TiMe2 (2) were prepared and characterized crystallographically. Stoichiometric reactions of 2 with PhNMe2H[B(C6F5)4] in the presence of PMe3 afforded [(t-Bu3PN)2TiMe(PMe3)][B(C6F5)4] (3), while reaction of 2 with B(C6F5)3 affords (t-Bu3PN)2TiMe(μ-Me)B(C6F5)3 (4). Under laboratory conditions these compounds are effective ethylene polymerization catalysts. Under commercially relevant solution polymerization conditions, these catalysts are exceptionally active. Complex 2, when activated with Ph3C[B(C6F5)4], produces high molecular weight polyethylene with a narrow polydispersity at a rate approximately 4 times faster than the constrained geometry catalyst ((C5Me4SiMe2N-t-Bu)TiX2). As such, these catalysts represent the first non-cyclopentadienyl, single-site catalysts competitive with derivatives of metallocenes under commercially relevant polymerization conditions.
Characteristics of Titanocene Catalyst Supported on Palygorskite for Ethylene Polymerization

Abstract:A series of heterogeneous catalysts with Cp2TiCl2 supported on palygorskite were prepared and evaluated by ethylene slurry polymerizations. The so-called direct supported catalyst, for which the pretreatment of palygorskite with MAO or Al(i-Bu)(3) was not necessary, gave the highest activity among these supported catalysts and could be more robust than homogeneous Cp2TiCl2. With the direct supported catalyst, no significant activity loss was observed under low Al/Ti molar ratios (Al/Ti=300) and the decay of polymerization rate was slower when compared to the other supported catalysts. It was found that the surface Lewis acidity of palygorskite after thermal treatment played an important role in activation of metallocene compound and resulted in high catalyst activity.

Abstract:The late transition metal catalyst 2,6-bis[1-(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino)ethyllpyridine iron(II) chloride was supported on silica. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electronic micrograph and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were utilized to examine the process of supporting catalyst on silica and investigate the possible mechanism of support. Furthermore, ethylene polymerizations with the supported catalysts were carried out in various conditions such as different reaction temperatures and Al/Fe molar ratios. The results showed that MAO first reacted with the hydroxyl of silica forming Si-O-Al bonds and then the catalyst was bridged through MAO on the surface of silica. Compared with homogeneous catalysts, the supported catalysts show some decrease in catalyst activity. However, they can show good activity at a lower Al/Fe molar ratio with MAO as co-catalyst and give rise to higher molecular weight and melting temperature of the polymer. Better morphology of polyethylene was obtained by a supported catalyst than by its corresponding homogeneous catalyst. (C), 2002 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:The composite,prepared with polypropylene grafting maleic anhydride and silica crosslinked by 3 aminopropytriethyoxysilane,was used as the carrier to support titanium chloride for forming polymerization catalyst.Scanning electron microscope investigated the morphology of support,supported catalysts and polyethylene particles.The results indicated:silica and polymers have been combined closely,a little silica outside of the polymer net,however;under the proper conditions,the particles of polyethylene had a good replicability for catalysts morphology.
Preparation and Characterization of Novel Polyethylene Supported Metallocene Catalysts

Abstract:Different meshes powder of polyethylene grafting 4-vinylpyridine copolymers (PEVP) has been produced through the irradiation method. After pretreated with Methylaluminoxane (MAO), the copolymers were used as the supports for Cp2ZrCl2 catalyst. Results of XPS and FTIR measurements show that the catalytic sites have been bridged through MAO on the polyethylene cartier. The percentages of grafting 4-vinylpyridine and supported Cp2ZrCl2 depend on the size of polyethylene powder. The smaller the polyethylene powder, the more percent 4-vinylpyridine group and the Cp2ZrCl2 on the polyethylene chains, and the polyethylene- supported catalyst has a much higher activity for ethylene polymerization.

Abstract:Monodisperse polystyrene (PS) chains with different lengths are synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), serving as soluble supports for attaching mono(phenoxy-imine) metal complexes in the chain end. For ethylene polymerization, the PS chain-supported titanium (Ti) complexes exhibit unique catalytic features such as higher activity. Their performance in ethylene polymerization and kinetic examination is extensively investigated to uncover the influence mechanism of support chain length. Initially, the catalytic activity of the supported catalysts increases with the support chain length, but then decreases. Effective preservation by the support prevents catalyst deactivation and enhances the concentration of active sites [C*], leading to increased activity. However, the decline in activity is attributed to the exceptionally long support chain, impeding ethylene diffusion and leading to a reduction in ethylene concentration [M] around active sites. As the support chain length increases, the molecular weight (Mw) of the produced polyethylene (PE) decreases. The nascent polyethylene obtained from supported catalysts displays a uniform petal-like and shish-kebab morphology. The well-defined nature of these PS chain-supported catalysts provides a powerful tool for studying interactions between active centers and supports, offering insights that can guide the design of catalysts.
Transition Metal Acetylide Catalysts for Polymerization of Alkynes

Abstract:A series of palladium acetylide complexes with the structures of Pd(PPh3)2(CCR)2 (R=C(CH3)2OH, CH2OCOCH3, CH2OH, p-C6H4CCH, C6H5) were developed for homogeneous copolymerization of polar with non-polar alkynes. The catalytic activity of the five palladium acetylide complexes towards copolymerization of propargyl alcohol (OHP) with p-diethynylbenzene (p-DEB) is compared and discussed. The complexes containing polar alkynyl ligands show higher activity than corresponding complexes containing non-polar ligands. Solvent systems exhibit significant influence on realizing homogeneous polymerization and obtaining soluble copolymer. The copolymerization of OHP with p-DEB initiated with these catalysts could proceed under mild conditions to give soluble π-conjugated copolymer in yields as high as 66%. Features for copolymerization of OHP with p-DEB using Pd(PPh3)2(CCCH2OH)2 in CHCl3/MeOH mixed solvents have been described.
Hybrid Titanium Catalyst Supported on Core‐shell Silica/poly(styrene‐co‐acrylic Acid) Carrier

Abstract:Hybrid titanium catalysts supported on silica/poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid) (SiO2/PSA) core-shell carrier were prepared and studied. The resulting catalysts were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, laser scattering particle analyzer and scanning electronic microscope (SEM). The hybrid catalyst (TiCl3/MgCl2/THF/SiO2 center dot TiCl4/MgCl2/PSA) showed core-shell structure and the thickness of the PSA layer in the two different hybrid catalysts was 2.0 mu m and 5.0 mu m, respectively. The activities of the hybrid catalysts were comparable to the conventional titanium-based Ziegler-Natta catalyst (TiCl3/MgCl2/THF/SiO2). The hybrid catalysts showed lower initial polymerization rate and longer polymerization life time compared with TiCl3/MgCl2/THF/SiO2. The activities of the hybrid catalysts were enhanced firstly and then decreased with increasing PH2/PC2H4. Higher molecular weight and broader molecular weight distribution (MWD) of polyethylene produced by the core-shell hybrid catalysts were obtained. Particularly, the hybrid catalyst with a PSA layer of 5.0 mu m obtained the longest polymerization life time with the highest activity (2071 kg PE mol(-1) Ti h(-1)) and the resulting polyethylene had the broadest MWD (polydispersity index = 11.5) under our experimental conditions. Abstract:The development of recoverable and reusable catalysts has been the subject of research over past decades. In this review, we have outlined the strategies of designing, synthesis of polymer-supported catalysts and summarized recent developments in their extensive applications in various organic reactions. In many cases, this strategy has demonstrated its great advantage in simplifying the separation of products and recovery and reuse of the usually expensive catalysts while maintaining comparable catalytic performance to that of the unsupported parent catalysts. In addition, the development of a linear polymeric or dendronized chiral catalysts with tunable structure, size, shape and solubility will play an important role to their utility in organic synthesis. Significant progress could be reached from the developing an interdisciplinary expertise with contributions from organic, polymer and material chemists. Also, it is great importance in determining the choice of support. Therefore, the further developments of highly active and enantioselective catalysts will continue to be an important goal and challenge in this field.

Abstract:The internal and external circumstances and appl ic ation of catalysts of supported hetropolyacids catalyst are simply introduced in this paper. Comprehensive utilizations of catalysts of supported hetropolyacid s catalyst, which include C and SiO 2 and Al 2O 3 and SBA-15 and TiO 2 and b entonite and carbonized resin supported hetropolyacids catalyst, mainly are dis cussed. The reasonable utilizations of supported hetropolyacids catalyst not on ly effectively improve to be higher catalytic action and choice but also decreas e equipment and environmental pollution and can easily reclaim and apply and thi s clean method is believed to develop their function in the organic synthesis an d fine synthesis.
