Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), as a one-dimensional material, have outstanding mechanical properties such as extreme tensile strength and Young's modulus. At present, to prepare pure CNTs materials is quite difficult and the mechanical properties of the materials are limited in a low level. Because of their extraordinary mechanical properties and high aspect ratio, CNTs are considered to be ideal candidates for polymer reinforcement. In addition, CNTs/polymer composite materials are much easier to prepare than pure CNTs materials, so they have been paid much attention by researchers recently. However, challenges must be faced to prepare the CNTs/polymer composite with ultimate mechanical properties. So in this chapter, the main concerns are how to disperse CNTs in polymer matrix to prepare homogenous composite dispersions, how to prepare homogenous CNTs/polymer composite using possible fabricating processes based on the homogenous dispersions, how to increase the fiber mechanical properties especially through the enhancing interaction between polymer and CNTs, controlling the amount of CNTs and enhancing their orientation in the matrix.

Abstract:ABSTRACT In this review paper, the structures and properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were introduced. The research progress in mechanical properties of CNTs reinforced polymer matrix composites, metal matrix composites and ceramic matrix composites were reviewed, then the strengthening and toughening mechanism and the main problems/challenges existed in the CNTs/ceramic matrix composites were analyzed emphatically. Keywords: Carbon nanotubes; Composites; Mechanical properties INTRODUCTION Carbon nanotube (CNT) which was discovered by a Japanese scientist Lijima 1 in 1991 is a new type of carbon structure. It is a quasi-one-dimensional quantum wire with a large ratio of length to diameter and an inherent characteristic of reinforcing fiber. In addition, CNTs also have the following characteristics. 1) Heat resistance, corrosion resistance, thermal shock resistance, outstanding heat transfer and electrical conductivity, self-lubricating property and biocompatibility and so on. 2) CNT is one of the strongest and stiffest materials on earth known to date. The theoretical and experimental results have shown unusual mechanical properties of single wall CNT (SWNT) with the axial Young's modulus as high as 1 to 5 TPa and tensile strength of around 200 GPa, which are around 100 times stiffer and stronger than steel while the density is only on thate sixt 3. ) Becaush of e CNTs are hollow cage substance and have a closed topological configuration. It can present its elasticity by the volume change. So, it is able to withstand more than 40% tensile strain, while the brittle behavior, plastic deformation or bond breakage won't happen, showing the excellent toughness. Due to the remarkable mechanical properties, high length-diameter ratio and high chemical and thermal stability, furthermore, the completion of CNTs damage results from the collapse in the hollow portion. The CNTs used in composite materials are able to absorb energy greatly and improve the toughness and strength significantly. So they are considered to be one of the most promising new reinforcements. These outstanding properties make the CNTs very attractive functional and structural materials for a variety of applications. Currently, the CNTs/polymer matrix composites, CNTs/metal matrix composites and CNTs/ceramic matrix composites have been prepared by many researchers using the CNTs as the reinforcements. 167

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have high Young’s modulus, low density, and excellent electrical and thermal properties, which make them ideal fillers for polymer composites. Homogeneous dispersion of CNTs in a polymer matrix plays a crucial role in the preparation of polymer composites based on interfacial interactions between CNTs and the polymer matrix. The addition of a small amount of CNTs strongly improves the electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the composites. Abstract:The state-of-art and key problems of carbon nanotube (CNT) based polymer composites (CNT/polymer composites) including CNT/polymer structural composites and CNT/polymer functional composites are reviewed. Based on the results reported up to now, CNTs can be an effective reinforcement for polymer matrices, and the tensile strength and elastic modulus of CNT/polymer composites can reach as high as 3600 MPa and 80 GPa, respectively. CNT/polymer composites are also promising functional composite materials with improved electrical and thermal conductivity, etc. Due to their multi-functional properties, CNT/polymer composites are expected to be used as low weight structural materials, optical devices, thermal interface materials, electric components, electromagnetic absorption materials, etc. However, the full potential of CNT/polymer composites still remains to be realized. A few key problems, such as how to prepare structurecontrollable CNTs with high purity and consistently dependable high performance, how to break up entangled or bundled CNTs and then uniformly disperse and align them within a polymer matrix, how to improve the load transfer from matrix to CNT reinforcement, etc, still exist and need to be solved in order to realize the wide applications of these advanced composites.

Abstract:This paper reviewed the recent advances in the electrical property of polymer/carbon nanotube(CNT) composites.CNTs could enhance polymer matrix's electrical property because of its high electrical conductivity.However,CNTs were extremely difficult to disperse in a polymer matrix and usually intend to agglomerate to form stabilized bundles.The main challenge in the preparation of CNT-reinforced composites was to find a way to make CNTs homogeneously dispersed in polymer matrix.So far,there were several methods for the dispersion of carbon nanobubes,such as solution mixing,in-situ polymerization,melt mixing and chemical functionalization of the carbon nanotubes,etc.Numerous studies showed that the percolation threshold and conductivity depend strongly on the polymer type and fabrication method,aspect ratio of CNTs,uniform spatial distribution of individual CNTs and degree of alignment.These influencing factors and preparation of high performance polymer/CNTs composites were described in this review.Moreover,both the current challenge and the future development towards the field of polymer/CNTs electrical conductive composites were also discussed in this article.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibit excellent mechanical, electrical, and magnetic properties as well as nanometer scale diameter and high aspect ratio, which make them an ideal reinforcing agent for high strength polymer composites. The functionalized CNTs are believed to be very promising in the fields such as preparation of functional and composite materials. CNT-Polymer composites are expected to have good processability characteristics of the polymer and excellent functional properties of the CNTs. However, since CNTs usually form stabilized bundles due to Van der Waals interactions, are extremely difficult to disperse and align in a polymer matrix. The biggest issues in the preparation of CNT-reinforced composites reside in efficient dispersion of CNTs into a polymer matrix, and the alignment and control of the CNTs in the matrix. There are several methods for the dispersion of nanotubes in the polymer matrix such as solution mixing, bulk mixing, melt mixing, in-situ polymerization and chemical functionalization of the carbon nanotubes, etc. These methods and preparation of high performance CNT-polymer composites are described in this review.

Abstract:The carbon nanotubes(CNTs) possess unique structure and significant advantages,such as strong mechanical properties,high thermal stability and electrical conductivity. CNTs are considered as the ideal reinforcement for manufacturing carbon/carbon(C/C) composites. The preparation methods such as mixing,in-situ polymerization are reviewed in this paper. Abstract:This review focuses on the most recent progress in understanding mechanical properties of individual carbon nanotubes (CNT), carbon nanotube arrays, random networks, and polymer matrix composites. The key factors that influence the mechanical properties of these new (nano)materials are identified and discussed. The critical issue appears to be the load transfer efficiency; between nanotubes when organized in bundles, ropes, and networks; between matrix and nanotubes in composites. Among the different paths used to increase load transfer, cross-linking by irradiation is emphasized. A particular attention is paid on the role of nanotubes as nucleating agents in polymer composites, initiating the formation of a crystalline polymer sheath that has important consequence on the mechanical properties. The reinforcing element to be considered in that case is not CNT alone but CNT covered with a cylinder of crystalline polymer. Whereas a lot of effort has been focused on the problem of dispersion, it appears that the problem of nanotube-matrix interphase is almost as important. Recent works show that appropriate surface functionalization can be used both to improve dispersion and tailor the interphase. Nanotube surface engineering combined with methods producing oriented nanocomposites should bring exceptional materials in the near future.

Abstract:Among the many potential applications of carbon nanotubes (CNT), its usage to strengthen polymers has been paid considerable attention due to the exceptional stiffness, excellent strength, and the low density of CNT. This has provided numerous opportunities for the invention of new material systems for applications requiring high strength and high modulus. Precise control over processing factors, including preserving intact CNT structure, uniform dispersion of CNT within the polymer matrix, effective filler-matrix interfacial interactions, and alignment/orientation of polymer chains/CNT, contribute to the composite fibers' superior properties. For this reason, fabrication methods play an important role in determining the composite fibers' microstructure and ultimate mechanical behavior. The current state-of-the-art polymer/CNT high-performance composite fibers, especially in regards to processing-structure-performance, are reviewed in this contribution. Future needs for material by design approaches for processing these nano-composite systems are also discussed.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be incorporated into polymer matrices to form CNTs/polymer composites exhibiting outstanding mechanical, electrical and nonlinear optical properties. The crystallization and morphology of the polymers can be strongly affected by small additions of CNTs. A large number of research results have demonstrated that these composite materials have found many potential applications in the fields of e. g. photovoltaic cells, organic light-emitting device, optical limiting, all-optical switches, protective coatings, and artificial muscles as well. This review introduced the preparation of CNTs/polymer composites, and their potential applications in many high-technology fields.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were anchored onto electrospun nanofibers under the assistance of ultrasonication. During ultrasonication, CNTs in the dispersion medium were driven to hit the nanofibers intensively and could be uniformly embedded onto nanofiber surface. The interaction between CNTs and dispersion medium played a vital role in determining CNT decoration. Good dispersion of CNTs in the dispersion medium could prevent CNT migration towards the electrospun nanofibers, because CNTs were trapped in the solution rather than attached onto the nanofiber surface. In addition, the ultrasonication power and time, CNT initial dispersion and the type of dispersion medium can influence the ultimate morphology of the hierarchical nanofiber composite. It was also supported by nanoindentation measurements that the hardness and Young’s modulus for the CNT anchored nanofiber mat significantly increased, compared with that for the pure electrospun nanofibers.

Abstract:A novel class of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based nanomaterials has been surging since 1991 due to their noticeable mechanical and electrical properties, as well as their good electron transport properties. This is evidence that the development of CNT-reinforced polymer composites could contribute in expanding many areas of use, from energy-related devices to structural components. As a promising material with a wide range of applications, their poor solubility in aqueous and organic solvents has hindered the utilizations of CNTs. The current state of research in CNTs—both single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-reinforced polymer composites—was reviewed in the context of the presently employed covalent and non-covalent functionalization. As such, this overview intends to provide a critical assessment of a surging class of composite materials and unveil the successful development associated with CNT-incorporated polymer composites. The mechanisms related to the mechanical, thermal, and electrical performance of CNT-reinforced polymer composites is also discussed. It is vital to understand how the addition of CNTs in a polymer composite alters the microstructure at the micro- and nano-scale, as well as how these modifications influence overall structural behavior, not only in its as fabricated form but also its functionalization techniques. The technological superiority gained with CNT addition to polymer composites may be advantageous, but scientific values are here to be critically explored for reliable, sustainable, and structural reliability in different industrial needs.

Abstract:The excellent mechanical properties of carbon nanotube (CNT)make it a preferred reinforcement for composites.The mechanical properties of CNT/polymer composites are greatly determined by the interfacial bonding characteristics.Both research methods and research progresses of the interfacial bonding characteristics of CNT/pol-ymer composites were reviewed in this paper.Microscopic characterization techniques,raman spectroscopy analysis technology and nano-mechanical pull-out method were used in the experiment.Molecular simulation method simula-ted the pull-out process of CNT from the polymer matrix by applying displacement and force to CNT.The effects of polymer matrix (including type,crystal structure and density)and CNT (including chirality,diameter and function-al processing)on the interfacial bonding characteristics of CNT/polymer composites were summarized and the signi-ficant future research directions of this field were prospected.

Abstract:A general review of carbon nanotube (CNT)-polymer fibres is undertaken in this chapter with main efforts focusing on the mechanical, electrical and sensing properties of CNT-polymer fibres. The review introduces issues related to the preparation of CNT-polymer fibres and orientation of CNTs, necessary to fully exploit the mechanical and electrical properties of CNT-polymer fibres. It is demonstrated that CNTs have great potential for a wide range of applications. Their large aspect ratio, excellent electrical conductivity and ultra-high mechanical properties make them outstanding candidates to be multi-functional nanofillers for polymer fibres.
