Abstract:Objective: To sum up experience and methods of bilingual teaching of cell biology to medical undergraduates. Methods: Medical undergraduates at Fourth Military Medical University who took Cell Biology as an elective course from 2001 to 2004 were investigated by questionnaire and the results were analyzed. Results: (1) The level of the undergraduates’ general English met the basic demands of bilingual teaching, but uneven level of specialized English and poor listening comprehension were the common problems among most of the students. (2) The students had high requirements for the teachers of bilingual teaching, especially for their specialized knowledge (cell biology) and English fluency. Demands for teaching hour and material and teaching method differed greatly among the undergraduates. (3) Generally speaking, the bilingual teaching of Cell Biology to medical undergraduates was successful; however, there is still much to be improved. Conclusion: It is important to improve teachers’ quality and teaching experience as well as select appropriate teaching contents and methods to consolidate students’ specialized vocabulary and background knowledge.
