Abstract:Mathematical morphology is basically a set theory. It provides the concept of a structuring element to probe the image with arbitrary geometric patterns. A novel clustering algorithm based on mathematical morphology is presented. First, the data set is discretized, and then clusters are detected as well separated subsets by a hierarchical morphological operation procedure. An algorithm to determine connected components allows us to estimate the number of clusters. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed clustering algorithm is able to cluster complex shaped data set better than the classical clustering algorithms, and find an optimal number of clusters

Abstract:A discrete algorithm for image zooming is improved.Another one for binary image and grayscale image zooming in 3D is presented.The method can enlarge the image with arbitrary real positive scaling factors and can keep the edges as clear and natural as possible.Experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the quality of zoomed image effectively.

Abstract:There is a contradiction between image denoising and protection of the useful information in the image. To deal with this contradiction, we use the approach of mathematical morphology. In this paper, we expound the method and effectivity of mathmatical morphology in image processing. Based on it, an improved and fast image denoising algorithm is proposed and some experiments have been made to show that this algorithm is simple, effective and feasible.

Abstract:One new binarization method for gray images is presented in this paper by defining the decision rule, which puts not only much emphasis on local approach but also completely incorporates the shape-feature of the objects in the images, especially for the shape of the object in the gray images is known in advance. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method is generally capable of dealing with binarization challenges with high performance and is effective in solving problems of low contrast between the foreground and the background.

Abstract:Semantic image segmentation provides significant foundation for image analysis and understanding. Oriented to semantic segmentation, this paper proposes an image segmentation method integrating grad reconstruction and non-linear processing, aiming at resolving the problems of sensitivity to noise and over-segmentation existing in traditional watershed algorithm. At first, a method based on double morphological opening and closing reconstruction is developed to attain morphological gradient, which passes through a certain threshold transform to restrain light and dark details caused by noise. Subsequently, a non-linear classification based on certain scale is employed to reduce the influence of close texture insides objects and background. Finally, an improved watershed labeling algorithm is proposed and performed. Experimental results illustrate that the proposed method is superior to traditional method and that used in Matlab toolboxes.

Abstract:Based on operators for edge feature detection, a new method of adaptive threshold selection is proposed which combines the local threshold with global threshold selection. Our experiments show that the new algorithm keeps the original edge features well and is efficient for processing low quality images.

Abstract:The goal of this work is to present a new method for image segmentation using mathematicalmorphology. The approach used is based on the watershed transformation. In order to avoid an oversegmentation, we propose to adapt the topological gradient method. The watershed transformation combined with a fast algorithm based on the topological gradient approach gives good results. The numerical tests obtained illustrate the efficiency of our approach for image segmentation.

Abstract:Presents a new method used in fundus image processing and its artery-vein cross feature classifying based on mathematical morphology. Some of the selected morphological structuring elements and their combinations with several particular morphological operations are applied to the gray level image and the binary image. This paper also compares this method with convolution method and template matching method. The result shows that the morphological method is more effective. The gray level profile of the vein section along artery axis near the cross point is selected as the quantitative criterion to classify cross phenomena

Abstract:The neurons of intersecting cortical model (ICM) are fired by the background information in the binary image and the fired message is broadcasted in parallel cross the neural network. We apply ICM to binary image erosion, dilation, and skeleton. In the mean time, the results generated from the ICM on binary image are equivalent to those generated from the classical mathematical morphology, and the computational efficiency of ICM based method is 3 to 5 times faster than that of the traditional mathematical morphological method.

Abstract:Background noise and illumination condition are two primary factors degrading the performance of document image binarization. In this paper, we propose an iterative refinement framework to support robust binarization. Initially, an input image is transformed into a Bhattacharyya similarity matrix with Gaussian kernel, which is subsequently converted into a binary image using maximum entropy classifier. Then, we adopt the run-length histogram to estimate the character stroke width, an important indicator to determine the length of filter window. After noise elimination, the output image is used for the next round of refinement and the process terminates when the estimated stroke width is stable. Extensive experiments were conducted on the standard DIBCO datasets as well as a new benchmark harvested from our user query log. Results show that our proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods and is more robust to handle low-quality images.

Abstract:We present a novel approach of binarization for gray images. The proposed algorithm uses the normalized graph cut(Ncut) as the measure for spectral clustering, and the weighted matrices used in evaluating the graph cuts are based on the gray levels of an image, rather than the commonly used image pixels. Thus, the proposed algorithm requires much smaller spatial costs and much lower computation complexity. Experiments on text images in natural scene show the superior performance of the proposed method compared to the typical thresholding algorithms.

Abstract:Aiming at limitation of classical methods of color image sharpening,a kind of novel spatial sharpening algorithm is proposed,which includes mathematical morphology.Gaussian filter is used to separate low frequency and high frequency components of image.High frequency component is intensified,low frequency component is modulated,and the two components are composed into new output image.Morphology open and close operations are composed to apply to high frequency component of image because the two operations have separately adaptive maximum and minimum filtering feature,consequently local detail of image is automatically highlighted.Then modulated transfer function model of human eye is adopted to low frequency of image,and whole visual appearance of image is further improved.Experimental results show that the method is better than classical image sharpening algorithms in RGB color space and hue/illuminant/saturation perceptional color space.

Abstract:Abstract Binarization plays an important role in document analysis and recognition (DAR) systems. In this paper, we present our winning algorithm in ICFHR 2018 competition on handwritten document image binarization (H-DIBCO 2018), which is based on background estimation and energy minimization. First, we adopt mathematical morphological operations to estimate and compensate the document background. It uses a disk-shaped structuring element, whose radius is computed by the minimum entropy-based stroke width transform (SWT). Second, we perform Laplacian energy-based segmentation on the compensated document images. Finally, we implement post-processing to preserve text stroke connectivity and eliminate isolated noise. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art techniques on several public available benchmark datasets.

Abstract:A novel binarization system for degraded document images is proposed in this paper. It combines two local adaptive binarization methods (Niblack method [1] and improved Palumbo method[2]) which are complementary to each other. Niblack thresholding algorithm behaves very well in character areas but causes a lot of noise in background areas while the improved Palumbo thresholding algorithm causes little background noise but sometimes it over-thresholds the characters. The proposed system which combines both Niblack thresholding and Palumbo thresholding takes advantages of these two methods. Experiments show that it performs very, well with little background noise and can be used to binarize degraded document images in manY application circumstances.
