Abstract:Hyporheic flow, which occurs in the shallow zone where river flow interacts with groundwater (GW) flow, involves spatiotemporally complex water mixing and storage processes of high ecological importance. The role of naturally complex riverbed morphology on the interaction of hyporheic flow in meandering stream and groundwater patterns is still poorly understood. In this study, groundwater conceptual and numerical models were established using field datasets from investigations completed along the Yellow River in Henan province (China), which is characterized by heavy sediment load and varied riverbed topography transversally to the river channel. The change of transversal riverbed topography was conceptually simplified and described as single sinusoidal with varying amplitude and wavelength. Numerical results showed that increasing topography amplitude and wavelength produced a thicker and wider hyporheic zones (HZs), where surface water mixes with groundwater, under both gaining and losing conditions. Increasing topography wavelength led to significant decrease of both the total water flux (Q TF ) across the riverbed sediment interface and the hyporheic flux (Q HF, the flux of these water that flows into the subsurface and returns to the stream after spending some time in the bed) under both gaining and losing conditions. The total exchange flux between groundwater and surface water (Q GW-sw ) increased with the increase of topography wavelength under gaining conditions, but decreased under losing conditions. These trends for Q TF , Q HF and Q GW-sw could be reasonably well fitted with power law relationships. Furthermore, the increased wavelength also increased groundwater exchange travel times between GW and surface water (SW) under losing conditions, but decreased under gaining conditions. The change of topography wavelength also compress/extend the GW flow paths under gaining and losing conditions, respectively. These findings demonstrate the major control of river morphology on spatial patterns and magnitude of hyporheic exchanges, and further highlight the importance of considering riverbed topography not only when evaluating hyporheic exchange but also the interactions between GW and SW.
