Analysis on the Risk Factors of Infection in Late-onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patients

Abstract:Objective To investigate the risk factors of infection in late-onset systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE) patients.Methods The clinical data were collected from 158 inpatients with SLE treated in West China Hospital of Sichuan University from January 1995 to December 2009,and the onset age of these patients were more than 50 years old.We collected the information of gender,clinical manifestation,disease activity,laboratory examination index,accompanied diseases and complications,etc.Univariate analysis and logistic regression were conducted to analyze the risk factors of infection.Results The incidence of infection in the 158 patients with SLE was 33.5%(53/158).The results of univariate analysis showed that disease activity(P=0.001),low albumin(P=0.030),interstitial lung disease(ILD)(P=0.000) and diabetes(P=0.003) were closely related to infection in these patients.Logistic regression analysis identified disease activity(OR=7.533,P=0.000),ILD(OR=19.762,P=0.000),and diabetes(OR=6.862,P=0.025) as the risk factors for infection in patients with SLE.Conclusions Tight control of the SLE activity and minimizing the risk factors are effective methods to lower the incidence of infection in elderly patients with SLE.
