Abstract:Five vegetation communities:herbosa,shrubs,coniferous forest,theropencedrymion,and evergreen broad-leaved forest in the red soil region of the Lijiang Valley are selected as the five successive stages of the typical restoration process of degraded ecosystems to study variation of structure and biomass of the vegetation of the five different stages.Results demonstrate that with the succession going on from herbosa →shrubs→coniferous forest→theropencedrymion→evergreen broad-leaved forest,abundance and diversity index of species,biomass and productivity of vegetation all show a rising trend prior to the formation of a mature and stable biotic climax.A degraded community tends to develop to be more complex and sounder in structure.Based on the findings of the research,some advice is put forward about how to artificially accelerate ecological restoration in the red soil region of the Lijiang Valley.

Abstract:Abstract Navel orange garden and camellia oleifera forest are the most characteristic important economic industrial tree species in Jiangxi Province, and are mainly planted in mountainous and hilly areas. Because the species diversity of plants under the economic fruit trees is not rich, soil erosion and non-point source pollution are caused. Therefore, in view of the problems of soil erosion and nutrient deficiency under the economic fruit forest, this paper points out that the sustainable development of the economic fruit forest ecosystem can be promoted by increasing the plant diversity under the economic fruit forest, improving the ground cover of the conomic fruit forest, preventing and controlling the soil erosion, cultivating the soil fertility, restoring the biodiversity and promoting the sustainable development of the economic fruit forest ecosystem. At the same time, the future research and development direction of this field are discussed, which can not only provide scientific basis for the sustainable development of economic fruit forest industry in red soil erosion area, but also provide theoretical and technical support for the ecological construction of soil and water conservation and the development of ecological agriculture on slope land. It is of great significance for promoting the construction of ecological civilization in Jiangxi Province.

Abstract:Large areas of red soil in southern China are degraded due to improper management in land use change from forest to agricultural crops in 1970s, which has resulted in serious soil erosion. Since 1980s, artificial revegetation has been practiced to restore the productivity and maintain ecological functionality of red soils. Whereas numerous studies have been conducted to evaluate the effects of revegetation on soil physical and chemical properties, little information is available on soil microbial responses. The objective of this work was thus to investigate the influence of plant species and growing period on soil biochemical and biological properties.

Abstract:In order to evaluate the soil and water conservation function of main vegetation types in Jiangning small watershed, and afford scientific principle on screening suitable species of ecological protection forest construction in the region, the soil anti-erodibility of main vegetation types in the region was researched. Base on the process of soil water erosion, soil initial infiltration rate, steady infiltration rate, soil general porosity, > 0.25 mm water stable aggregate content, >0.5 mm water stable aggregate content, soil water stable index, soil anti-scour index, soil shear bond strength was selected as evaluation indexes of soil anti-erodibility, used main composition method to determine weight of every index, used Topsis as assessment method, soil anti-erodibility of main vegetation types of Jiangning small watershed were evaluated. The result showed that soil anti-erodibility of Masson pine forest was the best; the second were Chinese fir forest, Quercus forest; the third were Bamboo forest, shrub and tea garden; grassland was worse; bare land was the worst.

Abstract:In the black soil area, where soil erosion is severe and the soil is in urgent need of ecological restoration, providing reasonable and practical measures to prevent soil erosion and restore the soil is an urgent issue at present. In this study, nine runoff plots were deployed in Bin County, the core area of soil erosion control, to monitor runoff and soil loss long-term, simulated by the erosion potential method (EPM) for comparison. Studies have shown that soil erosion is strongly influenced by soil conservation measures, land use, and vegetation cover. In contrast, slope, pre-soil moisture content, and soil crusting due to rainfall can affect erosion in a single rainfall event. The most severe soil erosion was in bare land, up to 1093.58 t km−2 a−1, followed by longitudinal ridge tillage land (751.88 t km−2 a−1) and cross ridge tillage land (31.58 t km−2 a−1). The shrublands and mixed forests planted for ecological restoration experienced almost no erosion. The soil loss rate of the cross ridge tillage and ecological restoration plots was much lower than the allowable soil loss rate (200 t km−2 a−1). Under erosive storms, longitudinal ridge tillage can produce soil loss rates that far exceed those of bare ground. The change from longitudinal ridge tillage to cross ridge tillage on gentle slopes can effectively prevent soil erosion in the study area. The vegetation restoration measures of planting shrubs such as Amorpha fruticosa Linn. are incredibly effective in the ecological restoration of wastelands in black soil areas. For the black soil area after the retreat, the vertical structure of vegetation can be improved by planting shrubs at the bottom, thus achieving a good restoration effect.

Abstract:In order to provide scientific supports for watershed sustainable development,operation and management, Nanxi River was selected as a typical red-soil region,and ecosystem health assessment methodology and pressure analysis combining remote sensing(RS),geographic information system(GIS)and multi-index were applied.The ecosystem health assessment was classified into two categories:water area and terrestrial area,and the indices were divided into six sections including habitat structure,aquatic organisms,ecological pressure of water area and ecological patterns,ecological function,ecological pressure of terrestrial area,which consisted of 16 sub-indicators.The results showed that the health condition of the study area was good,and only the aquatic organisms and ecological function were in ordinary condition.Among them,83.3% of sub-basins were in good condition,while the others were in ordinary condition,and all of them were located in the downstream areas.Human disturbance was the major reason of the degradation of watershed ecosystem health,such as rapid growth of urban land areas,excessive livestock breeding and fishing. In order to improve the health conditions, more attention should be paid to adjusting the scope of the conservation areas,controlling pollution from point and nonpoint sources as well as protecting the biodiversity.The proposed assessment methodology can comprehensively indicate the health condition of Nanxi River.This case study could make a contribution to guiding the watershed management in ecologically fragile areas,and ensuring the water ecological health of the basin and its downriver.

Abstract:For the research to soil anti-erodibility of main soils in the source area of Ganjiang River in Jiangxi Province,the anti-erodibility index of various soil,such as organic matter content,bulk density,corrosion resistance index,aggregation condition,aggregation degree,dispersion rate,dispersion coefficient,the rate of structural damage,and water-stable aggregate content and so on were determined,and the principal component analysis(PCA) to follow the comparison was used.The results indicated: the discending order of soil anti-erodibility was mountain coppice soil(74.67),yellow soil(61.90),mountain yellow-red earth(47.26),yellow red earth(44.77),purplish soil(39.79),red earth(28.34).Moreover,several measures should be taken to improve soil anti-erodibility,such as,increasing the vegetation coverage,reducing the man-made damage and increasing fertilization in areas of Red earth and Purplish soil.Many propaganda works should be developed within mass to enhance their environment concern and prevent soil and water from being destroyed in the process of harnessing in areas of Mountain yellow-red earth and Yellow red earth.Besides,current eco-environment should be maintained while it was utilized comprehensively and a number of actions that resulted in soil erosion should be held back as far as possible in the areas of Mountain coppice soil and Yellow soil.The content of soil organic,aggregation degree and the aggregation condition were the best factors of appraising soil anti-erodibility in the source area of Ganjiang River.

Abstract:Vegetation-erosion dynamics is a new interdisciplinary science, studying the laws of evolution of watershed vegetation under the action of various ecological stresses. Introducing a qualitative expression of ecological stresses in this paper, the present authors establish the coupled differential equations for the vegetation-erosion process and derive a theoretical solution. The model is applied to the Anjiagou watershed on the Loess Pateau and the Xiaojiang watershed and its sub-watersheds on the Yunnan Plateau. The calculated results agree well with the vegetation development processes. Abstracted from the differential equations the so-called vegetation-erosion chart is worked out, with which we can predict the development trend of vegetation under no human stresses. It is demonstrated that the erosion control is important for vegetation development and reforestation must be a long-term strategy. On the Yunnan Plateau with relatively high precipitation and temperature, vegetation can be greatly improved if erosion is controlled. On the dry and cold Loess Pateau suffering from high rate of soil erosion, however, vegetation can effectively control erosion but erosion reduction exhibits low effectiveness on vegetation development. Vegetation in the area is not stable and management is always needed to maintain the vegetation.
Soil Erosion Evaluation of Lower Hilly Red Soil Regions in Zhejiang Province

Abstract:The soil erosion of lower hilly red soil regions in Zhejiang was studied in this paper. There are two main models, a FCD model which can decrease the interferences from shadows, and a mixed pixel model to estimate vegetation coverage. According to the Standards for classification and gradation of soil erosion, the intensity of soil erosion was obtained from vegetation coverage, slope, land-use and other factors. Results show that vegetation coverage is in a good status that the vegetation fraction is generally more than 30%, and the soil erosion in the study area is slight, but agricultural land such as plantation is rather serious, especially the area where intense erosion plantation has reached 17.65%. In addition, tillage is another very important factor in engendering soil erosion, which should be paid more attention in calculating soil erosion. However, soil erosion is likely to occur in such areas, so the preventing and controlling of soil erosion still needs more attention.

Abstract:A vegetation-erosion model was developed to assess the extent of soil erosion and development trend of vegetation in the context of existing and contemplated vegetation-based soil erosion controls under different climatic, topographical and soil conditions. The model recognizes four vegetation-mediated soil erosion states: (i) an expanding vegetation coverage coupled with reduced erosion (C), (ii) a deteriorating vegetation coverage coupled with increased erosion (A), (iii) two transitional states between A and C, one with increasing erosion and vegetation coverage (B) and the other with decreasing erosion and vegetation coverage (D). With the model, the vegetation-erosion state of any particular area can be quantitatively described, by way of a vegetation-erosion chart, for varying climate, soil and topographic conditions, as demonstrated for the Xishan region, the East River basin, the Wangjiagou and Anjiagou watersheds (Loess Plateau), and the Xiaojiang watersheds (hot and dry valleys in the upper Yangtze River basin) in China. This paper presents the principles and results of area-specific investigations that track the fractions of the areas covered by vegetation and experiencing soil erosion (with soil loss determined in t/km2yr). This is done within the context of local soil erosion control initiatives via re-vegetation efforts, or the lack thereof, over the course of 30 years. The effectiveness of reforestation and erosion-control measures vary under different climatic, topographical and soil conditions. The vegetation may be quickly restored in the hot and wet East River basin but is very difficult on the dry and cold Loess Plateau. In the hot and dry valleys the vegetation can be restored if erosion is controlled and intensive reforestations for small watersheds are performed.
Dynamic Shifts in Soil Fungal Functional Group Characteristics across Distinct Vegetation Types during Ecological Restoration in Degraded Red Soil Regions

Abstract:The red soil region in southern China has become the second-largest soil erosion area after the Loess Plateau. The evolutionary trajectory of soil fungi during vegetation restoration in acidic red soil regions remains a subject of inquiry. The investigation focused on the restoration process of an ecosystem facing intense degradation in the southern regions of China by studying four distinctive vegetation types: barren land (BL), pure Pinus massoniana forest (CF), mixed coniferous (CBF), and broad-leaved forest (BF). The outcomes revealed considerable enhancements in soil properties' attributes, evident through a gradual reduction in the bulk density of soil (SBD) and a corresponding increment in soil moisture content (MC), total nitrogen (TN), total carbon (TC), total potassium (TK), soil organic matter (SOM), and available potassium (AK) as vegetation restoration advanced. An intriguing trend emerged where the relative abundance of Ascomycota fungi displayed a declining trajectory, whereas Basidiomycota fungi exhibited an ascending trend with the progression of vegetation restoration. Specifically, broad-leaved forests exhibited a significantly greater relative abundance of Penicillium fungi compared to other stages of vegetation restoration. The diversity of soil fungal communities increased in tandem with vegetation restoration. A redundancy analysis illuminated a strong and positive relationship between the abundance of major soil fungi and soil pH, TN, and TC (key influencers of acidic red soil fungal populations). This study provided additional evidence of an elevation in ectomycorrhizal and saprophytic trophic fungi, signifying a transition that enhances the vegetation's ability to capture water and nutrients. This, in turn, contributes to the overall enrichment and diversity of vegetation communities during the progression of restoration.

Soil Erosion Impact on Soil Fertility of Uncultivated Soil in the South Jiangsu Province

Abstract:137Cs tracer method was used to investigate soil erosion intensity. It indicated that although the plant cover in sloping land of the south Jiangsu Province is well, there still was soil erosion in uncultivated soils. Soil erosion is not serious because of favorable condition of landform and climate. At the mean time soil particlesize distribution, contents of soil organic matter, total nitrogen, total phosphorus were measured to analyze the erosion effect on the physical and chemical properties of eroded soils. The results indicated that soil erosion would lead to soil particle coarseness. And the loss soil particles due to erosion were mainly silt. Moreover, the erosion may also caused soil nutrients decrease in the eroded soil. That is, the erosion would accelerate soil fertility degradation. Besides the erosion impacted on onsite soil fertility the loss of soil nutrient would threaten the water ecological environment in this area. Therefore, in order to overcome soil fertility degradation and its offsite ecological damage it is necessary to control soil erosion. 

Abstract:In South China, large amounts of strongly eroded badlands that are difficult for natural recovery formed in red beds soft rock, posing serious environmental hazards. This process is thought to be related to a unique nutrient cycle and plant-soil feedback in alkaline soil. In this study, we investigated 44 plant communities and some soil samples to explore the reasons for this erosion from the perspective of secondary succession and its driving factors. The results showed that the natural secondary succession (NSS) in red beds soft rock is the sequence of primary forest to scrub grass, xerophytes, and badlands. Masson pine and Masson pine/Schima superba communities have formed under the efforts of artificial intervention restoration. The community ecological gradient (CEG) and deciduosity rate substantially increased along the NSS, whereas the biomass, and diversity index rapidly decreased. The plantation community showed the opposite trend with increasing recovery years. Limitations in terms of soil water content, pH value, and available nitrogen (AN) for the community markedly increased, and we confirmed these were the largest contributors to redundancy analysis at the community scale. Compared with acidic soil, alkaline soil with a rough texture and high pH could not maintain enough water for plants during dry seasons, which inhibited the absorption of AN by plants. Therefore, in primary forests, the CEG and deciduosity rates need to be increased so that the plant community can adapt to harsh environments. plantation forests achieved soil acidification through litter accumulation. In the scrub grass and xerophyte, continuous reduction in litter and the intensification of soil erosion destroyed the balance between red argillaceous rock bed erosion and species invasion, leading to community degradation. Therefore, much attention should be given to primary forest protection and limiting factors mitigation in degraded communities.

Abstract:Vegetation restoration tends to enhance soil carbon storage in severely degraded lands, which is of great significance to mitigate climate change. In this study, soil organic carbon, inorganic carbon and soil properties were investigated in a restored post-mining area in Shanxi province, eastern Loess Plateau. Through artificially planting Rhus typhina, Quercus liaotungensis and Pinus tabuliformis (referred to as RT, QL and PT, respectively), soil water and total nitrogen contents increased significantly. Soil organic carbon in restored sites increased by 101.9% compared with that of a non-restored site. Accumulation of litter and withered root with vegetation succession led to the increases of input of organic matter, which was beneficial to improve soil organic carbon storage. QL had significantly higher organic carbon sequestration rate (1.59 t ha−1 yr−1) than those of other tree species, which might be attributed to higher nitrogen content and litter input. Soil inorganic carbon accounted averagely for 70.1% of the total carbon storage. However, re-vegetation had no significant influence on soil inorganic carbon which was closely related with soil parent material and climate. Our results suggested that abandoned mine lands might serve as C sinks through appropriate restoration management. Indigenous QL would be suitable to be recommended as the preferred species for reclamation management of degraded lands. Because of a short duration of restoration, the dynamics of soil inorganic carbon during vegetation succession needs to be further studied to reveal potential C sequestration mechanism in arid and semi-arid regions.
Study on Soil Erosion and Vegetation Effect on Soil Conservation in the Yellow River Basin

Abstract:Based on the rapid soil erosion assessment approach,the soil erosion intensity of the Yellow River basin at the end of 1990s is assessed using minimum polygon as study units.The distribution characteristics of soil erosion in the Yellow River basin are analyzed.Based on the assessment results,a parameter study investigates the soil conservation effects of vegetation coverage with a resolution of 1.1 km.And the vegetation coverage range that could generate obvious soil conversation effect is obtained.It is indicated that,on the whole view of the basin, the lower and upper threshold of vegetation coverage for obvious soil conservation effect respectively are 15% and 45%,and the best vegetation coverage is 25%.

Abstract:To ameliorate degraded red soils and restore their productivity, it is necessary to quantitatively assess the effects of different land uses on soil fertility. In this study, surface soil samples (0–20cm) under different land uses were collected from an 18-year ameliorative experiment site of a eroded red soil in Lanxi county, Zhejiang province of southern China. The status of surface soil fertility was quantified with a ryegrass growth test in the greenhouse and by numerical analysis of twelve important fertility indexes. The soil fertility indexes were grouped into three major factors using a factor analysis, i.e., organic matter-nitrogen-structure, acidity and phosphate. By means of principal component analysis and cluster analysis of these fertility factors, the fertility of the eroded red soil as a function of land use patterns had the following decreased order: vegetable land>paddy field, cropping arable land and ryegrass land>teagarden>citrusgarden>forestland>wasteland. The result suggested that organic matter, total N, available N, and water-stable aggregates were the main characteristics for fertility restoration of the eroded red soil. Soil fertility was most rapidly restored where the soil had been used as vegetable land, and least restored when left as wasteland. The results indicated that land use strongly affected the fertility restoration of eroded red soils because of its effect on the input of nutrients and energy, thus determining the speed and direction of soil fertility evolution.

Abstract:Red soil is susceptible for soil erosion because of its intrinsic material components, and together with the eroded soil material. The plant nutrients are washed away, and the concentrations of nutrients are even higher in the sediment than in the topsoil of the former soil. From 1978 onwards, at the beginning of the period of opening and reforming, the farmers were assigned a piece of land and were encouraged to cut down the forest as a measure to increase local economy. All of these human activities further result in significant red soil erosion. An eight-band Landsat ETM data acquired in 2000, soil map, digital topographical maps with scale of 1:10 000 and field data were used to identify and map the eroded areas in the red soil region in Jiangxi province. The satellite image was calibrated, registered and georeferenced, and a supervised training technique based on areal extraction of spectral values, with spatial (topographical information) and spectral constraints was used to generate the spectral signatures of the informational classes. Ancillary data such as land use map from local government were used to assist the satellite image classification and interpretation. The results showed that low and very low erosion area accounted for 41.3% of the total study site, medium for 9.4%, high and very high for 37.7%, and no erosion area (water surface, etc.) for 11.6%. It also indicated that Landsat ETM supported by thematic GIS data can discriminate the soil erosion features in the red soil region in China.
