Abstract:The objective of College English teaching is to develop students' comprehensive communicative competence, including pragmatic competence and intercultural sensitivity. Through the quantitative-descriptive research method, the study explored pragmatic competence and intercultural sensitivity of Chinese EFL learners and tested whether the respondents’ pragmatic competence and intercultural sensitivity are significantly correlated with each other. The results reveals that Chinese EFL learners were at the intermediate level of overall pragmatic competence and intercultural sensitivity. The correlations between respondents’ pragmatic competence and intercultural sensitivity were highly significant. The results of the study may give enlightenment on the cultivation of Chinese EFL learners’ communicative competence.

A Case Study on the Relationship between Individual Differences and English Pragmatic Competence of Non-English-Major Chinese Postgraduates

Abstract:In the field of pragmatics, a lot of research has been done concerning the pragmatic failures committed by college students. Little research is oriented to the non-English-major postgraduates (NEMP). For that reason, this paper attempts to study the pragmatic competence of NEMP, especially the relationship between pragmatic competence and their individual differences, such as gender differences and differences among different majors, age and working experience. A questionnaire was administrated to 115 non-English-major postgraduates in East China University of Technology (ECUT) in China. The questionnaire consists of an English pragmatic competence test with 25 multiple choices, which was selectively taken from He Ziran’s study (1988). By using both quantitative and qualitative analysis, the study offers the following findings: the general level of NEMP’s pragmatic competence is quite low at present, but with their developing cultural awareness, they do a better job in sociopragmatic competence than that in pragmalinguistic competence; there are significant differences between different genders and their pragmatic competence, with the females’ pragmatic competence higher than males’, while the differences among majors, age and working experience are not so significant in the participants’ English pragmatic competence. The paper also offers some suggestions for postgraduates’ English teaching: using different teaching methods should be considered; Input of English pragmatic knowledge in proper contexts and making best use of Internet should be increased as well; the postgraduates’ individual differences should also be treated appropriately in English teaching.

Abstract:Pragmatic competence, as an essential part of communicative competence, plays a vital role in people’s daily communication, especially cross-cultural communication. This study aims to investigate Chinese EFL undergraduates’ pragmatic competence in English letter writing according to gender and faculty, and explore four EFL lecturers’ perceptions on pragmatic competence, problems faced by their students and methods used by lecturers in teaching English letter writing. This research is a descriptive research design using QUAN-QUAL model. A letter writing test was employed as one research instrument. Stratified random sampling was adopted to select 450 samples (225 males and 225 females) from three faculties (150 from Chinese Language Faculty, 150 from Management Faculty, and 150 from Education Faculty) in Nanfang College, Guangzhou and Hunan City University. In the real study, students’ writing was graded by one lecturer based on the scoring rubric adapted from Chen’s scoring rubrics for pragmatic competence and IELTS writing scoring rubric in which 5 components were included: choice of vocabulary, grammar, syntax, organization, mechanics. The results of the letter writing test indicated that female students’ pragmatic competence was better than male students’, and the pragmatic competence of students from social science faculty (Chinese Language Faculty and Management Faculty) was better than those from natural science faculty (Education Faculty). Lecturers considered it necessary to teach pragmatic competence in class though only a small proportion of lecturers did it. It is suggested that some teaching approaches such as process approach, modeled writing, revise after writing could be used in class so that students’ motivation is stimulated and better learning results could be achieved.

Abstract:Pragmatic competence is an indispensable element of communicative competence, which is also one goal of core competencies. The introduction of the concept of core competency in General Senior High School English Curriculum Standards puts more emphasis on cultivating students’ pragmatic competence and on teachers’ input of pragmatic knowledge in English teaching. This paper begins with clarifying the theories of pragmatic competence and pragmatic failure by referring to other linguists’ explanations. Then, it briefly discusses the importance of pragmatic teaching in senior high school English classrooms. Finally, this paper proposes some feasible teaching strategies to promote high school students’ pragmatic competence.

Abstract:The college English pragmatic teaching approach, which seeks to foster students' English for all-round growth, is constantly developing with the ongoing development and improvement of education in China. As a result, during the implementation of college English pragmatic teaching, teachers realized their educational responsibility and implemented the mixed teaching style in a reasonable manner [1]. English pragmatic teaching content has grown in depth, enhancing students' perceptions of learning and allowing them to participate more fully in knowledge acquisition. Furthermore, it creates a solid basis for college students' follow-up English level exams, allowing them to steadily develop their English thinking abilities. This study focuses on the mixed-methods reform of college English pragmatic teaching. The author puts forward reasonable suggestions combined with his own teaching experience.

Abstract:Textbooks are an integral part of teaching and learning in Chinese College English classroom.However,they rarely provide adequate pragmatic information for students to successfully develop their pragmatic competence.This study will examine four College English(New) Listening and Speaking textbooks to find out the nature of pragmatic materials and tasks included in the textbooks.The findings indicate that there is a dearth of pragmatic information contained in the Listening and Speaking textbooks and the variety of pragmatic information is limited.Most of the metapragmatic explanations are simple.

Abstract:This research aims to examine Chinese EFL learners' performance on a listening comprehension task that focused on linguistic and pragmatic comprehension.Linguistic comprehension requires the listener to understand vocabulary,syntax and other linguistic information,while pragmatic comprehension asks for the listener to understand contextual information,such as the role and status of the interlocutor(Rost 2002).An independent Sample T-test and a correlational study were conducted to explore two main problems.The first one dealt with whether there were developmental differences in the processing of pragmatic meaning and linguistic meaning across two groups of EFL learners with high and low proficiency and their comprehension of two subcomponents of pragmatic meaning — speech acts processing and conversational implicature processing.The second one explored the relationship between comprehension of pragmatic meaning and linguistic meaning,and the relationship between the two subcomponents.

Abstract:The aim of the research were (1) to examine participants’ pragmatics competence toward English formal, neutral and formal request, (2) to find evidence of the participants’ lack of pragmatics competence toward various setting of English pragmatics situations.qualitative and quantitative methods were applied to analyze the result of the findings. English grammar competence test was given to determine the subjects’ grammar competence. The English pragmatic test was given to determine the subject’ competence on English pragmatic.the subjects of the research were grouped into 3 categories; group a, subjects whose English grammar competence are at basic level, group b, subjects whose English grammar competence are at intermediate level and group c, subjects whose English grammar competence are at advance level. Each group consists of 5 individuals, who have no prior information of the test model and the aims of the research. Ielts model test is administered before the pragmatic competence test, to groups the subjects of the research. There are 3 parts of the English pragmatic competence which researcher applied to determine the result of the research, (1) identifying formal, informal and neutral request utterances, (2) expressing willingness and unwillingness with reasons in using the utterances (3) answering appropriately to multiple questions.the result of the research shows different finding from each of the English grammar competence level. The research result unsurprisingly shows low level of pragmatics competence at intermediate and basic level of grammar competence. Different result showed at higher level whereas the relationship between grammar and pragmatic competence is strong.
Examination of data collection methods for pragmatic competence assessment of EFL learners

Abstract:This research examined whether three commonly used data collection methods, namely the discourse completion test, role-play tasks, and naturally occurring data, are appropriate data collection methods for the assessment of the pragmatic competence of English as a foreign language (EFL) learners. Moreover, the study used the three data collection methods to determine whether there was a significant correlation between the grammatical competence and the pragmatic competence of EFL learners. Participants included 100 Asian EFL learners at two English proficiency levels. This research found a significant difference in the speech act performance of the EFL learners between each pair of the three data collection methods. The results suggested that the naturally occurring data collection method revealed the speech act performance of the EFL learners at its optimal. Furthermore, a significant correlation was found between the grammatical competence and the pragmatic competence of the EFL learners by using the naturally occurring data collection method. Both results indicated that the naturally occurring data collection methods may be more appropriate for the assessment of the pragmatic competence of EFL learners. Further empirical experiments should be conducted to ascertain the correlation between grammatical competence and pragmatic competence.

Abstract:This article explores the contribution of pragmatics in the cultivation of communicative competence from the perspective of applied linguistics. Firstly, the development and definitions of applied linguistics and pragmatics were reviewed, and the theoretical system and core concepts of pragmatics were elaborated. Furthermore, the role of pragmatics in cultivating communicative competence was analyzed, including the cultivation of pragmatic awareness, learning of pragmatic knowledge, application of pragmatic strategies, enhancement of pragmatic competence, enhancement of language appropriateness, and cultivation of cross-cultural communicative competence. On this basis, the application of pragmatics in teaching practice was explored, such as the principles and methods of pragmatic teaching, the development and selection of pragmatic textbooks, and the design and implementation of pragmatic assessment. Finally, the challenges and coping strategies faced in cultivating communicative competence were analyzed. This article aims to provide theoretical guidance and practical reference for the cultivation of communicative competence in the field of foreign language education in China.
Improving EFL learners' pragmatic awareness: why and how

Abstract:This paper overviews the ways in which EFL learners' pragmatic awareness can be developed in language classrooms through focused instruction and practice. It argues that effective communication requires awareness of the conventions governing language use and attention to the characteristics of the context and the interlocutors, besides linguistic sources. The main claim is that even though some pragmatics data that is based on native speaker norms might not provide relevant models for learners of English as a foreign or international language, these learners still need to become aware of cross-cultural variation in norms of language use and learn how to consider social and contextual factors surrounding effective communication. After defining pragmatic competence and transfer, the paper discusses possible ways for integrating pragmatic consciousness-raising into language teaching and the problems involved in this endeavour. It then describes a course designed to raise pragmatic awareness in advanced level EFL learners as part of their TEFL training program. The underlying principles, materials and sample activities of the course are presented and learners' reaction to the course is discussed.

Abstract:It can be a great challenge for second language (L2) learners to comprehend meanings that are implied in utterances rather than the surface meaning of what was said. Moreover, L2 learners’ attitudes toward pragmatic learning are unknown. This mixed-methods study investigates L2 learners’ ability to comprehend conversational implicatures. It also explores their beliefs about and intentions to develop this ability using Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior (TPB). A total of 498 freshmen from a public university in China participated in the study. Data were collected using a web-based test, stimulated recall tasks and semi-structured interviews. Results show that the participants differed in recognizing the intended meanings. Complicated factors account for the variations. In addition to the types of implicature, learners’ beliefs about developing pragmatic comprehension also influence their learning intention, and subsequent performance. These beliefs include learners’ multi-layered, complex attitudes toward the outcomes of pragmatic learning, perceived self-efficacy beliefs regarding language proficiency and L2 cultural knowledge, actual behavioral control over opportunities and resources for pragmatic learning, and perceptions of less social pressure on pragmatic learning. The use of TPB may help language teachers and test designers to understand learners’ beliefs about L2 pragmatic learning in the English as a foreign language (EFL) context. Understanding the factors influencing learners’ intention will help design more effective teaching curricula that may integrate pragmatic instruction and testing in the future.

Abstract:This study aims to develop a practical and reliable test to assess second language pragmatic knowledge as well as to investigate the effect of study abroad experience and proficiency level on EFL learners’ pragmatic competence. A total 59 participants, consisting of 34 females and 29 males, were categorized into groups based on their exposure to the target language and proficiency. The results show that the reliability of the test reaches ?= .798 which means it is acceptable for a language test. Further development of test items is required to achieve more adequate test reliability. The findings also suggest that learners' pragmatic knowledge can be influenced by both study-abroad experience and linguistic competence. These factors may contribute to learners' ability to appropriately respond to pragmatic utterances from the test. Thus, language learners should focus on increasing their linguistic proficiency to enhance their understanding and use of pragmatic language. This study underscores the importance of designing effective language pragmatic tests that incorporate a variety of pragmatics components and comprehensive instruments to achieve the desired test reliability and validity.
Pragmatic Competence in an Email Writing Task: Influences of Situation, L1 Background, and L2 Proficiency

Abstract:The study examines a corpus of 306 request emails written by 32 English-speaking (ES) teachers and 121 L2 learners from distinctive L1 backgrounds (i.e., Chinese, French, Spanish) and with different levels of L2 proficiency. Pragmatic competence is analyzed through the coding of direct and indirect request strategies used in formal and informal email writing. Findings reveal the influences of communicative situation, L1 background, and L2 proficiency on pragmatic competence in email writing. First, L2 learners show a significantly lower degree of situational variability compared with ES teachers. Second, L1 backgrounds have a significant impact on L2 writing performance. Third, L2 learners with higher English proficiency tend to use more indirect request strategies, but they have not developed pragmatic competence to adjust their usage across written contexts. Findings are discussed in relation to pedagogical implications for developing writing competence of L2 learners, which should be attuned to diverse rhetorical expectations and individual needs.
