Abstract:Chlorine dioxide (ClO 2 ) is a strong oxidizing agent and an efficient disinfectant. Due to its broad-spectrum bactericidal properties, good inactivation effect on the vast majority of bacteria and pathogenic microorganisms, low resistance to drugs, and low generation of halogenated by-products, chlorine dioxide is widely used in fields such as water purification, food safety, medical and public health, and living environment. This review introduced the properties and application status of chlorine dioxide, compared the action mode, advantages and disadvantages of various disinfectants. The mechanism of chlorine dioxide inactivating bacteria, fungi and viruses were reviewed. The lethal target of chlorine dioxide to bacteria and fungi is to destroy the structure of cell membrane, change the permeability of cell membrane, and make intracellular substances flow out, leading to their death. The lethal targets for viruses are the destruction of viral protein capsids and the degradation of RNA fragments. The purpose of this review is to provide more scientific guidance for the application of chlorine dioxide disinfectants.

Abstract:In this paper the application of chlorine dioxide in food freshkeeping was summarized.Chlorine dioxide is a highly efficient and safe antiseptic,which can kill microorganisms efficiently;meanwhile Chlorine dioxide can prevent the formation of ethylene from methironine and destroy the formed ethylene,thereby providing special advantage in the food freshkeeping.This paper also discussed its future in food freshkeeping.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has tremendously increased the production and sales of disinfectants. This study aimed to systematically review and analyze the efficacy and safety of chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant. The literature relating to the use of chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant was systematically reviewed in January 2021 using databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. Inclusion criteria were studies that investigated the use of chlorine dioxide to assess the efficacy, safety, and impact of chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant. Out of the 33 included studies, 14 studies focused on the disinfectant efficacy of chlorine dioxide, 8 studies expounded on the safety and toxicity in humans and animals, and 15 studies discussed the impact, such as water treatment disinfection using chlorine dioxide. Chlorine dioxide is a safe and effective disinfectant, even at concentrations as low as 20 to 30 mg/L. Moreover, the efficacy of chlorine dioxide is mostly independent of pH. Chlorine dioxide can be effectively used to disinfect drinking water without much alteration of palatability and can also be used to destroy pathogenic microbes, including viruses, bacteria, and fungi from vegetables and fruits. Our review confirms that chlorine dioxide is effective against the resistant Mycobacterium , H1N1, and other influenza viruses. Studies generally support the use of chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant. The concentration deemed safe for usage still needs to be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Abstract:Wastewater disinfection with chlorine dioxide(ClO_2) is one of the recommended processes to control biological pollution in wastewater.It is most efficient in killing bacteria and viruses.However the disadvantage of chlorine dioxide is the undesired disinfection by-products.These ions are suspected to do harm to the receiving aquatic environment.The by-product formation and toxicity in wastewater after chlorine dioxide(ClO_2) disinfection was explored by ion chromatograph and luminescent bacteria after exposure to a test sample.It was proved that chlorine dioxide(ClO_2) disinfection could induce the toxicity of wastewater,and the toxicity of disinfected wastewater was mainly due to ClO_2~-,and the toxicity increased with ClO_2~-.Furthermore,the effectiveness of ferrous ion(Fe(Ⅱ)) deoxidizing chlorite was studied.The result showed that Fe(Ⅱ) could effectively reduce ClO_2~-and lower the toxicity of wastewater.

Abstract:In this study, chlorine dioxide (ClO(2)) was used as an alternative disinfection agent with humic acid as the organic precursor in a natural aquatic environment. The major topics in this investigation consisted of the disinfection efficiency of ClO(2), the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), and the operating conditions. The results indicated that the pH value (pH 5-9) did not affect the efficiency of disinfection while the concentration of organic precursors did. The primary DBPs formed were trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). The distribution of the individual species was a function of the bromide content. The higher the ClO(2) dosage, the lower the amount of DBPs produced. The amount of DBPs increased with reaction time, with chlorite ions as the primary inorganic by-product.

Abstract:In this study, chlorine dioxide (ClO2) was used as an alternative disinfectant with vanillic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and humic acid as the organic precursors in a natural aquatic environment. The primary disinfection by-products (DBPs) formed were trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). Under neutral conditions (pH = 7) for vanillic acid, more total haloacetic acids (THAAs) than total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) were found, with a substantial increase during the later stages of the reaction. In the case of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, the amount of THAAs produced was minimal. Raising the concentration of ClO2 was not favorable for the control of THAAs in low concentrations of vanillic acid. ClO2 could reduce the total amount of TTHMs and THAAs for higher concentration of vanillic acid. It was found that the humic acid treatment dosage was not significant. Under alkaline conditions (pH = 9), the control of TTHMs and THAAs for the treatment of vanillic acid was better and more economical, however, an appreciable amount of inorganic by-products were observed. Under the same alkaline condition, the control of THAA for the treatment of p-hydroxybenzoic acid was not beneficial and for the treatment of humic acid was not significant.

Abstract:The efficiency and mechanism of ozonation of dichlorvos(DDV) had been studied,and experimental result showed that ozone could effectively decompose DDV in the water,and the removal efficiency of DDV could be increased under basic condition.More than 90% of the DDV was removed within the initial 5 min.During the DDV ozonation degradation process,organic chlorine was almost completely converted into chloride.In the initial reaction stage,most of the TOC decomposition was finished during the first 5 min.The TOC removal rate increased with the increasing of ozone concentration.The analysis of GSMS showed that the main intermediate products were trimethyl phosphate,dichloroacetic acid(DCAA) and dichloro acetaldehyde.The quantitative analysis of DCAA showed that pH and reaction time had no obvious influence on the formation of DCAA.During the DDV ozonation process,there were three reaction modes: hydrolysis,direct ozone molecular oxidation and free radical reaction.The double bond of ethylene in the DDV molecule was first attacked by hydroxyl radical(·OH) to form dimethyl phosphate and dichloroethylene radical,which were further oxidized to other kinds of product or mineralized to phosphoric acid,carbondioxide and chloride.

Abstract:The investigation in deodorizing efficiency and application of ClO_2 by GC and GC-MS was carried on in this paper.The odor material of study are ammonia,trimethyl amine,hydrogen sulfide,n-propylmercapatan,odor in autopsy room and odor in public lavatory.The experimental results show clearly that ClO_2 is an oxidant with very strong oxidize efficiency.A lot of odor material can be destroyed by ClO_2 rapidly,the odor changed into the odorless.Consequently ClO_2 has great potentialities and great future in field of environmental protection and odor pollution.

Abstract:Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is an alternative to chlorine in water treatment due to its more limited formation of chlorinated disinfection by-products (DBPs). However, on-site generation of ClO2 often involves the production of free chlorine, unreacted reagents or side-reaction products. The disinfectant is thus a mixture of ClO2 and chlorine. The focus of this study was on the role of the mixed ClO2/chlorine oxidant in the changes of the precursors of DBPs including trihalomethanes (THMs), chloral hydrate (CH), haloketones (HKs), haloacetonitriles (HANs), halonitromethanes (HNMs), chlorite and chlorate. The influence of bromide ions in water was also included. The ratio of ClO2 to chlorine was found to significantly affect the DBPs formed, depending on the water sample's properties. In the three waters tested, THMs formation was the least at a ClO2 to chlorine mass ratio of 1 : 0.5 or 1 : 0.8. Both decreases and increases in the formation of CH and HKs after ClO2/chlorine pre-oxidation were observed compared with using ClO2 alone. The formation of HANs and TCNM was the least at a ClO2 to chlorine mass ratio of 1 : 0.5 or 1 : 0.8, although in the GM water sample no trend was apparent. In the presence of bromide, more bromine incorporation was found after ClO2/chlorine pre-oxidation than when ClO2 alone was used or without pre-oxidation at all. With an increase in the chlorine fraction in the mixed oxidant, less chlorite was formed; chlorate formation was enhanced instead. Therefore, the ratio of ClO2 to chlorine needs to be monitored and adjusted to obtain the best control of DBP formation.

Abstract:The formation of undesired chloro-organic byproducts is of great concern in the UV/chlorine process. In this study, chlorine dioxide (ClO2) pre-oxidation was applied to control the formation of chloro-organic byproducts and the toxicity in UV/chlorine-treated water. The molecular-level changes in dissolved organic matter (DOM) were tracked by using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) and ClO2 pre-oxidation was found to preferentially react with DOM moieties with high aromaticity level and with a carbon number of > 18, producing compounds with a higher degree of oxidation and lower aromaticity. The ClO2-treated DOM was found to be less susceptible to attack by radicals and free chlorine in the UV/chlorine process compared to the raw DOM. ClO2 pre-oxidation resulted in a significant decrease in the number of unknown chloro-organic byproducts (i.e., –17%) and the total intensity of organic chlorine detected by FT-ICR-MS (i.e., –31%). The molecular characteristics, such as O/C, aromaticity index, and the averaged number of chlorine atoms, of these unknown chloro-organic byproducts generated in the scenarios with and without ClO2 pre-oxidation were also different. Additionally, ClO2 pre-oxidation reduced the genotoxicity (SOS/umu test) and cytotoxicity (Hep G2 cytotoxicity assay) of UV/chlorine-treated water by 26% and 20%, respectively. The findings in this study highlight the merits of ClO2 pre-oxidation for controlling chloro-organic byproducts and reducing the toxicity of water treated by the UV/chlorine process in actual practice.

Abstract:Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is often used as an oxidant to remove taste, odor and color during water treatment. Due to the concerns of the chlorite formation, chlorination or chloramination is often applied after ClO2 preoxidation. We investigated the formation of regulated and emerging disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in sequential ClO2-chlorination and ClO2-chloramination processes. To clarify the relationship between the formation of DBPs and the characteristics of natural organic matter (NOM), changes in the properties of NOM before and after ClO2 oxidation were characterized by fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and size and resin fractionation techniques. ClO2 preoxidation destroyed the aromatic and conjugated structures of NOM and transformed large aromatic and long aliphatic chain organics to small and hydrophilic organics. Treatment with ClO2 alone did not produce significant amount of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), but produced chlorite. ClO2 preoxidation reduced THMs, HAAs, haloacetonitriles (HANs) and chloral hydrate (CH) during subsequent chlorination, but no reduction of THMs was observed during chloramination. Increasing ClO2 doses enhanced the reduction of most DBPs except halonitromethanes (HNMs) and haloketones (HKs). The presence of bromide increased the formation of total amount of DBPs and also shifted DBPs to more brominated ones. Bromine incorporation was higher in ClO2 treated samples. The results indicated that ClO2 preoxidation prior to chlorination is applicable for control of THM, HAA and HAN in both pristine and polluted waters, but chlorite formation is a concern and HNMs and HKs are not effectively controlled by ClO2 preoxidation.

Abstract:The use of chlorine dioxide to disinfect drinking water and ameliorate toxic components of wastewater has significant advantages in terms of providing safe water. Nonetheless, significant drawbacks toward such usage remain. These drawbacks include the fact that toxic byproducts of the disinfection agents are often formed, and the complete removal of such agents can be challenging. Reported herein is one approach to solving this problem: the use of α-cyclodextrin to affect the product distribution in chlorine dioxide-mediated decomposition of organic pollutants. The presence of α-cyclodextrin leads to markedly more oxidation and less aromatic chlorination, in a manner that is highly dependent on analyte structure and other reaction conditions. Mechanistic hypotheses are advanced to explain the cyclodextrin effect, and the potential for use of α-cyclodextrin for practical wastewater treatment is also discussed.

Full-scale Study of Removal Effect on Cyclops of Zooplankton with Chlorine Dioxide.

Abstract:Cyclops of zooplankton propagated excessively in eutrophic water body and could not be effectively inactivated by the conventional disinfections process like chlorination due to its stronger resistance to oxidation. In this paper, a full-scale study of chlorine dioxide preoxidation cooperating with routine clarification process for Cyclops removal was conducted in a waterworks. The experimental results were compared with that of the existing prechlorination process in several aspects: including the Cyclops removal efficiencies of water samples taken from the outlets of sedimentation tank and sand filter and the security of drinking water and so on. The results showed that chlorine dioxide might be more effective to inactivate Cyclops than chlorine and Cyclops could be thoroughly removed from water by pre-dosing chlorine dioxide process. The GC-MS examination and Ames test further showed that the sort and amount of organic substance in the treated water by chlorine dioxide preoxidation were evidently less than that of prechlorination and the mutagenicity of drinking water treated by pre-dosing chlorine dioxide was substantially reduced compared with prechlorination.

Abstract:Along with the expansion of cities and population growth, the demand for drinking water is increasing. Chlorine, the most common method of disinfection, is often used in the disinfection process of drinking water plants. Residual chlorine is routinely added to the water delivery network as an additive for continuous disinfection to ensure water safety from the drinking water pipelines to the customer's taps. However, some organisms can still survive even in conditions of high chlorine concentration. This also poses a significant risk to the safety of drinking water. This review investigates the origin of chlorine-resistant bacteria in drinking water networks, the species of chlorine-resistant bacteria found in recent years and the conventional methods of identification of chlorine-resistant bacteria, the current inactivation techniques for chlorine-resistant bacteria are also summarized. The research on inactivation of chlorine-resistant bacteria by ozone-based and other methods are especially highlighted.

Abstract:Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) has emerged as a promising alternative to free chlorine for water disinfection and/or pre-oxidation due to its reduced yields of chlorinated disinfection byproducts. ClO2 decomposes to form chlorite (ClO2-), which influences the following advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for micropollutant abatement in drinking water. This study aims at investigating the effects of ClO2- on the concentrations of reactive species (e.g., radicals and ozone) and on the formation of chlorate in the UV/chlorine AOP. Results showed that the concentration of ClO· in the UV/chlorine process remarkably decreased by 98.20-100.00% in the presence of ClO2- at concentration of 0.1-1.0 mg·L-1 as NaClO2. The concentrations of HO· and ozone decreased by 42.71-65.42% and by 22.02-64.31%, respectively, while the concentration of Cl· was less affected (i.e., 31.00-36.21% reduction). The overall concentrations of the reactive species were differentially impacted by ClO2-'s multiple roles in the process. UV photolysis of ClO2- generated HO· but not Cl·, ClO· or ozone under the drinking water relevant conditions. ClO2- also competed with chlorine for UV photons but this effect was minor (< 1.0%). The radicals/ozone scavenging by ClO2- outcompeted the above two to lead to the overall decreasing concentrations of the reactive species, in consistency with the kinetic model predicted trends. ClO2- reacted with radicals and ozone to form chlorate (ClO3-) but not perchlorate (ClO4-). HO· played a dominant role in ClO3- formation. The findings improved the fundamental understanding on micropollutant abatement and inorganic byproduct formation by the UV/chlorine process and other AOPs in ClO2--containing water.

Abstract:The photolysis of chlorine by ultraviolet radiation (UV/chlorine) produces HO˙ and Cl˙, part of which further transforms into reactive chlorine species (RCS) like Cl2˙− and ClO˙. These radicals are responsible for the advanced oxidation effect of UV/chlorine processes. Recently, UV/chlorine processes gather much attention from researchers and practitioners and published papers on UV/chlorine processes have drastically increased, which were thoroughly reviewed in this paper for understanding the state of the art of these technologies. Fundamental studies elucidate that acidic conditions are favorable to UV/chlorine processes through a change in quantum yield of chlorine photolysis, equilibrium shifts of radical species, and a change in radical scavenger effect of free chlorine. Comparative studies reveal that UV/chlorine processes are usually more energy-efficient than UV/hydrogen peroxide and UV/persulfate processes. Although unfavorable byproducts formation by RCS reactions is apprehended, application researches in real waters show that UV/chlorine processes do not enhance disinfection byproducts formation very much. Since UV irradiation and chlorination are widely used unit operations, a barrier to install an UV/chlorine process into a conventional process is not high. It is desired to develop and optimize a whole process combined with other unit processes for maximizing benefits in water treatment in the future.
