Abstract:Delay-Tolerant Networks (DTNs) are a type of emerging networks characterized by very long delay paths and frequent network partitions. For the distinct characteristics of DTNs, routing becomes one of the most challenging open problems. Recent years numerous approaches have been presented for addressing routing issues in DTNs. This paper surveys main DTN routing strategies and gives a comparison of them with respect to the performance metrics. Specially, we summarize the cardinal mobility models and DTN simulators which are significantly important to evaluate the performance of DTN routing protocols.

Abstract:Advances in Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) have revolutionized the digital age to a point where animate and inanimate objects can be used as a communication channel. In addition, the ubiquity of mobile phones with increasing capabilities and ample resources means people are now effectively mobile sensors that can be used to sense the environment as well as data carriers. These objects, along with their devices, form a new kind of networks that are characterized by frequent disconnections, resource constraints and unpredictable or stochastic mobility patterns. A key underpinning in these networks is routing or data dissemination protocols that are designed specifically to handle the aforementioned characteristics. Therefore, there is a need to review state-of-the-art routing protocols, categorize them, and compare and contrast their approaches in terms of delivery rate, resource consumption and end-to-end delay. To this end, this paper reviews 63 unicast, multicast and coding-based routing protocols that are designed specifically to run in delay tolerant or challenged networks. We provide an extensive qualitative comparison of all protocols, highlight their experimental setup and outline their deficiencies in terms of design and research methodology. Apart from that, we review research that aims to exploit studies on social networks and epidemiology in order to improve routing protocol performance. Lastly, we provide a list of future research directions.

Abstract:Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networks (DTNs) have been attracting great interest from research community, where data communication naturally does not require contemporaneous end-to-end connectivity. Although they are suffering from a large variation of network topology, numerous previous routing protocols proposed for DTNs still make effort to qualify delivery potential, via network topology information. Geographic routing is an alternative, conceptually, by relying on the geographic information instead of topological information. In the literature, since this technique branch has not been extensively investigated in DTNs, our paper identifies the motivation and challenges for applying geographic routing in DTNs with the state of the art. Also, we highlight the future research directions for this branch.

Abstract:In delay tolerant networks (DTN), the social attributes of nodes show long-term stability, which can be leveraged for more effective routing. In this paper, we first present a novel way of constructing social circles based on the node clustering phenomena in DTN. Then, considering that the forwarding capability of nodes is significantly different, we propose a spray strategy based on social circles (named SC-SS) to improve the spray and-wait routing algorithm. SC-SS selects the next hop based on the social circle of nodes in the spray phase. Instead of fixing the initial number of copies, we design an adaptive multiple spray-and-wait routing algorithm based on social circles (named SC-AMSW) to further improve the performance of SC-SS. SC-AMSW selectively sprays messages multiple times in the wait phase and determines an appropriate number of redundant message copies based on delivery predictability. We conduct extensive simulations to confirm the effectiveness of our proposed routing algorithms in DTN.

Abstract:Delay/disruption tolerant network (DTN) is originated from the pioneer research into interplanetary internet and later, researchers found that DTN can also be applied to many challenged networks. Several DTN routing protocols have been presented to improve the routing performance, since message delivery is difficult in such networks due to the absence of stable end-to-end paths. However, the protocols ignore the fact that the nodes in DTN like satellites and other wireless devices usually have very limited resources like battery, bandwidth, and storage. In this paper, we introduce four existing routing algorithms and two new routing algorithms we propose, and compare their performances of delivery ratio and latency in the case of limited buffer size under both ground and space environment. We obtain the curves of the network throughput varying with the network load, and find it showing a congestion phenomenon, from which we can compare the congestion control capacities of the routing protocols. Simulation results show that our newly proposed routing protocols can successfully cope with the congestion caused by storage constraints.

Abstract:Many routing protocols aim to improve delivery ratio, as well as reduce end-to-end delay time and total replicas in delay tolerant networks, or disruption tolerant network DTN. Most prior literatures study mobile ad hoc wireless networks without considering existing physical infrastructure. By taking them into considerations, we propose a routing protocol in DTNs considering consecutive forwarding quality CFQ, and conduct extensive simulations with real trace data, so as to evaluate the performance of CFQ. Simulation results show that CFQ outperforms most existing pure probability based forwarding protocols and most existing pure centrality-community based forwarding protocols in that its delay time and replicas are significantly reduced and its delivery ratio is significantly increased. At last, we are able to conclude that CFQ is more buffer-efficient and time-efficient.

Abstract:Delay tolerant networks (DTNs) may lack continuous network connectivity. Routing in DTNs is thus challenging since it must handle network partitioning, long delays, and dynamic topology in such networks. In recent years, social-based approaches, which attempt to exploit social behaviors of DTN nodes to make better routing decision, have drawn tremendous interests in DTN routing design. In this article, we summarize the social properties in DTNs, and provide a survey of recent social-based DTN routing approaches. To improve routing performance, these methods either take advantages of positive social characteristics such as community and friendship to assist packet forwarding or consider negative social characteristics such as selfishness. We conclude by discussing some open issues and challenges in social-based approaches regarding the design of DTN routing protocols.

Abstract:Compared with the traditional Internet architecture, Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) has a bundle layer between the application layer and transport layer and is able to tolerate delays and disruptions. In this paper, we simulate typical DTN routing protocols and configure a vehicular network environment to evaluate the protocol performance. We compare the performance evaluation indicators that include delivery ratio, overhead ratio, average delay, and average buffer time with different node numbers and buffer sizes. We finish the simulation using Opportunistic Network Environment (ONE) simulator and the DTN routing protocols are evaluated according to the simulation results.

Abstract:Routing in Delay Tolerant Networks (DTNs) is a challenge due to the fact that the network graph is intermittently connected. However, routing benefits considerably if one can take advantage of knowledge concerning nodes mobility, recent studies have shown that human have location visiting preferences in their daily mobility traces, considering this is a common and stable property of human, we utilize it in the design of routing algorithm for social-oriented DTNs. In this paper, we propose a preference location-based routing strategy (PLBR). We focus on three aspects, according to the longterm behavior, we first provide the approach of acquiring one’s preference locations, then the closeness metric which is used to measure the degree of proximity of any two nodes is proposed, on the basis of that, the data forwarding algorithm is presented. Simulations based on real mobility traces show that compared to other two relevant routing protocols in DTNs, PLBR strategy achieves better tradeoff between the data delivery ratio/delay and the delivery overhead.

Abstract:To adapt to the highly dynamic changing and improve the routing performance in delay tolerant networks(DTNs),this paper proposed a density-aware routing(DAR) scheme for DTNs based on the spatial node distribution and degree centrality.DAR introduced node distribution of mobility model.With the node density of current location,DAR dynamically chose the number of message copies disseminated.Relay selection and copies division were based on degree centrality.Simulation results show that DAR achieves high delivery ratio and low delivery delay with low resource consumption.

Abstract:Currently, vehicular sensor network (VSN) has been paid much attention for monitoring the physical world of urban areas. We have studied VSNs by utilizing about 4000 taxies and 1000 buses equipped with GPS-based mobile sensors in Shanghai to constitute a virtual vehicular sensor network. The communication-connection intermittence makes the routing issue nontrivial when delay-tolerant applications are deployed in VSNs. The existing DTN routing protocols can be categorized as "neighbor-oriented" and how to select a neighbor candidate was always neglected. In this paper, we present a new DTN routing protocol for Delay-Tolerant Vehicular Sensor Networks, Packet-Oriented Routing protocol (POR), which is designed to emphasize neighbor selection based on awareness of packets to be sent and in consideration of probability to complete transferring of these packets. Our results show that POR performs much better than the ordinary Epidemic routing, as well as other popular routing protocols applied in a similar setting.

Abstract:Delay tolerant networks (DTNs) attempt to minimize the possible adverse impacts due to limitations and anomalies in intermittently connected networks. Routing in such sparse and dynamic networks is difficult as the source has little information about the destination, rendering a key challenge to find one simple and effective message delivery mechanism. In this paper, we propose PriCost, a protocol based on the cost for efficient routing of messages, and use the node's past interactions with others to determine the cost of potential routing, in the absence of any other information. Our simulations show that PriCost performs better than MaxProp with reduced complexity. The evaluations also show different cost based metrics hardly affect the performance provided they depend on the same feature extraction algorithm.

Abstract:Delay tolerant networks (DTNs) are sparse and highly mobile wireless ad hoc networks, where no contemporaneous end-to-end path may ever exist at any given time instant, and thus the "store-carry-forward" kind of schemes becomes a natural routing option. A lot of models have been proposed to analyze the unicast performance of such routing schemes in the DTNs, while few works consider the multicast scenario. In this paper, we develop a general continuous time Markov chain-based theoretical framework to characterize the complicated message delivery process of the DTN multicast scenarios, based on which analytical expressions are further derived for both the expected delivery delay and expected delivery cost. The developed theoretical framework is general in the sense that: 1) it can be used to analyze the DTN multicast performance under the common "store-carry-forward" routing schemes; 2) it can also be used for the common mobility models; 3) it covers some available models developed for the DTN unicast as special cases. We then apply the theoretical framework to explore the delivery performance of two popular routing schemes, the epidemic routing and the two-hop relaying.

Abstract:Because traditional Internet architecture is not suitable for hash network environments like sparse distribution and intermittent connection of nodes, Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) is proposed to address the delays and disruptions. In this paper, we propose a utility-based DTN routing protocol in Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET). Through considering node distance, node speed, node direction angle, and node activity, the utility of node is defined and is computed to select node for forwarding messages. We simulate the proposed DTN routing protocol and six typical DTN routing protocols in a VANET environment. The simulation results show that our proposed utility-based DTN routing protocol is able to achieve a comparable performance.

Abstract:Delay-tolerant networking (DTN) is a type of wireless network architecture that works to determine an approach to address the technical issues in rugged environments, in which routing paths are unstable, and continuous network connectivity may not be available. This paper proposes MCR, a routing algorithm based on the Markov chain and uses the node's past interactions with others to determine the potential routing. The process consists of a finite number of states with the order 1 or 2 and O(n) space complexity instead of O(n(2)) for Maxprop. The experimental results show that MCR outperforms Maxprop and Prophet, especially in resource-limited scenarios.

Abstract:Delay-tolerant network(DTN) is a practical restricted network model.The characteristic of DTN includes long delay,lacking of continuous network connectivity and low capability nodes.In this kind of network,the topology of the network change frequently that end to end path for messages delivery no longer exists,so traditional routing protocols do not function well.According to these shortages,a content-based routing protocol is proposed.In this protocol,each node decides whether to relay a message or not according to its encounter history.The experimental results show that the proposed protocol obtains the lower transmission delay and less overhead,compared to Opportunistic Content-Based Dissemination(OCBD) and Epidemic protocol.

Abstract:In the research of Delay Tolerant Network (DTN), DTN routing algorithm is a key research issue. The performance of a non-flooding routing algorithm is verified in our paper. The verified algorithm is an Adaptive Priority Routing Algorithm (APRA) which is based on fuzzy strategies. Firstly, we introduce the principle of APRA, then using Opportunistic Network Environment (ONE) -simulation software to compare the performance of Epidemic algorithm, Spray and Wait algorithm, PRoPHET algorithm and APRA. By comparing overhead of netword, rate of messages delivered and average dealy, it finds that the APRA performs better. At last, the weaknesses of this paper and further improvement are also discussed.
