Abstract:Concerning the prehistoric Philippine culture,although its researchers are divergent on its developmental course and periodization,they believe to various extents that this aboriginal cultural system contains widespread cultural elements from the continent of South China.The available archaeo- logical data accumulated for almost one hundred years suggest that the Philippine Islands were the main link between the aboriginal cultures of the South China Baiyue system and the"Austronesian"cultures in the southwestern Pacific Ocean.This is reflected from the existence of cultural elements from South China continent in the prehistoric Philippine cultural sequence,whose archaeological cultures of the Pa- leolithic,Neolithic and early Metal ages,especially their principal contents,show without exception close relationship with South China continent.

Abstract:China is a key area of early human settlement in East Asia, with numerous Paleolithic localities indicating an early Pleistocene presence of hominins in northern and southern China. Considerable research has been devoted to determining possible migration routes for hominins linking the two areas. In this paper, we report the discovery of several loess-covered Paleolithic sites in the Hanzhong and Ankang Basins along the Hanjiang River in the southern piedmont of the Qinling Mountains (QLM) in central China. A chronology is developed for these sections using a combination of detailed optically stimulated luminescence dating, magnetostratigraphic analyses, and pedostratigraphic correlation with the well-dated loess-paleosol sequence of the central Chinese Loess Plateau. The results indicate that the age of the oldest lithic assemblage at the Longgangsi locality 3 Paleolithic site in Hanzhong Basin is similar to 1.20 Ma, thus making this locality as one of the oldest sites in central China. Our work also indicates that hominins occupied the Hanjiang valley at several times: similar to 1.2, 0.9, similar to 0.6, and similar to 0.1 Ma. We propose that the Hanjiang River Valley was a probable hominin routeway through the 0J,M because many sites corresponding to these different phases were also discovered to the north of the QLM. Future study on the Hanjiang River Valley is important for verifying the hypothesis of an early human migration route between southern and northern China. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Despite the fact that the continuity of morphology of fossil specimens of modern humans found in China has repeatedly challenged the Out-of-Africa hypothesis, Chinese populations are underrepresented in genetic studies. Genetic profiles of 28 populations sampled in China supported the distinction between southern and northern populations, while the latter are biphyletic. Linguistic boundaries are often transgressed across language families studied, reflecting substantial gene flow between populations, Nevertheless, genetic evidence does not support an independent origin of Homo sapiens in China. The phylogeny also suggested that it is more likely that ancestors of the populations currently residing in East Asia entered from Southeast Asia.
A STUDY OF THE SKELETONS OF ZHOU AND HAN DYNASTIES UNEARTHED IN THE MIDDLE AND THE SOUTH REGIONS OF SHANDONG PROVINCE

Abstract:The ancient human bones studied in this paper were unearthed at some sites in the middle and the south regions of Shandong by the Archaeological Institute of Shandong Province. Eleven nearly complete skulls of Zhou and Han Dynasties were selected, their morphological characters were observed and measured. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The morphological character of the skulls showed that this population of the middle and south of Shandong were similar to that of the northern Shandong lived in similar era in bearing more distinct features of the modern East and South Asian Mongoloid groups than any other Mongoloid groups. 2. The results of cluster analysis and principal component analysis indicated that the relationship between the Shandong Zhou-Han era population and the ancient groups of the Yellow River Valley especially the middle or lower reaches of the river is much closer than that with the ancient southern groups of China. 3. Zhou-Han group of Shandong Province is closer to Yayoi groups of West Japan than to the Jomon groups. This study supports the hypothesis that the ancient population of continental China especially the East China have contributed in the origin of modern Japanese.
Isotopic Evidence of Millet Consumption in the Liangshan Region of Southwestern China During the Neolithic

Abstract:Archaeological evidence indicates that millet and rice spread into southwestern China successively from the Ganqing Region and the Yangtze River Valley by approximately 5000 BP. After that, southwestern China showed a diverse pattern of mixed millet-rice cultivation. As a cultural intersection, the Liangshan region was influenced by many different areas, including the Zangyi Corridor, the Chengdu Plain, and the northern Yun-Gui Plateau. Due to poor preservation conditions, little isotopic research on the human palaeodietary pattern has been conducted in the Neolithic Liangshan area. This article presents an isotopic analysis of human skeletal remains from the Houzidong site, located in the southern part of the Liangshan region, to investigate the human subsistence strategy of the site. A total of 35 isotopic data were successfully obtained from the 89 samples of this experiment, with a wide range of delta 13C values (-17.4%o to -11.5%o; -13.6 +/- 1.4%o) and delta 15N values (+8.6%o to +12.0%o; +9.5 +/- 0.7%o). The analysis showed that the human diet at the Houzidong site included both C3 and C4 foods, and there were diverse human subsistence strategies, based on the fact that millet would have made a significant contribution to the human diet at this site (including both millet and millet-based animals). It is hypothesized that millet agriculture in the Liangshan region may have been the result of interaction between the natural environment and the local population represented by the archaeological culture.

Abstract:Past human genetic diversity and migration between southern China and Southeast Asia have not been well characterized, in part due to poor preservation of ancient DNA in hot and humid regions. We sequenced 31 ancient genomes from southern China (Guangxi and Fujian), including two ∼12,000- to 10,000-year-old individuals representing the oldest humans sequenced from southern China. We discovered a deeply diverged East Asian ancestry in the Guangxi region that persisted until at least 6,000 years ago. We found that ∼9,000- to 6,000-year-old Guangxi populations were a mixture of local ancestry, southern ancestry previously sampled in Fujian, and deep Asian ancestry related to Southeast Asian Hòabìnhian hunter-gatherers, showing broad admixture in the region predating the appearance of farming. Historical Guangxi populations dating to ∼1,500 to 500 years ago are closely related to Tai-Kadai and Hmong-Mien speakers. Our results show heavy interactions among three distinct ancestries at the crossroads of East and Southeast Asia.

Origin of ethnic groups, linguistic families, and civilizations in China viewed from the Y chromosome

Abstract:East Asia, geographically extending to the Pamir Plateau in the west, to the Himalayan Mountains in the southwest, to Lake Baikal in the north and to the South China Sea in the south, harbors a variety of people, cultures, and languages. To reconstruct the natural history of East Asians is a mission of multiple disciplines, including genetics, archaeology, linguistics, and ethnology. Geneticists confirm the recent African origin of modern East Asians. Anatomically modern humans arose in Africa and immigrated into East Asia via a southern route approximately 50,000 years ago. Following the end of the Last Glacial Maximum approximately 12,000 years ago, rice and millet were domesticated in the south and north of East Asia, respectively, which allowed human populations to expand and linguistic families and ethnic groups to develop. These Neolithic populations produced a strong relation between the present genetic structures and linguistic families. The expansion of the Hongshan people from northeastern China relocated most of the ethnic populations on a large scale approximately 5300 years ago. Most of the ethnic groups migrated to remote regions, producing genetic structure differences between the edge and center of East Asia. In central China, pronounced population admixture occurred and accelerated over time, which subsequently formed the Han Chinese population and eventually the Chinese civilization. Population migration between the north and the south throughout history has left a smooth gradient in north-south changes in genetic structure. Observation of the process of shaping the genetic structure of East Asians may help in understanding the global natural history of modern humans.

Abstract:A genetic history of China The history of human movements into and within China has been difficult to determine solely from archaeological investigations or genetic studies of contemporary peoples. Yang et al. sequenced DNA from 26 individuals from 9500 to 300 years ago from locations within China. Analyses of these individuals, along with previously sequenced ancient individuals and present-day genomes representing global populations, show a split between ancient humans in northern and southern China. Neolithic northern Chinese individuals are closest to modern-day East Asians, whereas ancient individuals from southern China are most closely related to modern-day Southeast Asians and show an affinity to modern-day Austronesian populations. These results indicate that there was a southward movement and admixture of peoples during the Neolithic that gave rise to modern-day populations in East Asia. Science this issue p. 282

Abstract:Abstract The archaeological cultures from Neolithic Age to early Iron Age in the Southeast of China including south of Jiangsu (江苏) and Anhui (安徽), Zhejiang (浙江), Jiangxi (江西), southeast of Hunan (湖南), Fujian (福建), Guangdong (广东), Guangxi (广西), Hainan (海南), Taiwan (台湾) and the adjacent coast of Vietnam, compose one of the special segment in the unity of “Assimilation and Integration of Pluralistic Cultures” in prehistoric and early history of China. These regional cultures with the continuingly temporal sequence have developed for thousands of years from early Neolithic Age to early Iron Age, “Relying on Huaxia Nationality of Central Nation and Facing Maritime Barbarians of Austronesian”, are just the material cultural heritages of the indigenous Miao, Man , Bai Yue and their ancestors in the “Southeastern Direction” of the ancient Chinese history.
New progress in understanding the origins of modern humans in China

Abstract:Hypotheses concerning the origins of modern humans have been intensively debated, and two competing models, the recent “Out-of-Africa” and “Multiregional Evolution” paradigms, have dominated research and discussions for decades. Evidence from China has played a fundamental role in this debate: regional continuity and replacement by populations in-migrated from Africa have both been suggested and supported mainly by paleoanthropologists and geneticists, respectively. As more evidence has accumulated, new results obtained, and more scholars from various disciplines become involved, supporters of the recent “Out-of-Africa” model agree more or less with the “Multiregional Evolution” model regarding the complex history of modern humans and their interbreeding with other archaic populations (e.g., Neandertals). Recent discoveries of new human fossils, Paleolithic archaeological materials, and ancient DNA evidence in China have yielded a large body of information regarding the formation and development of modern humans in this region. However, controversies continue, including that most molecular biologists insist on the replacement of archaic populations by modern humans dispersed from Africa, while most paleoanthropologists and archaeologists propose an enhanced “Continuity with Hybridization” model. In this paper, we compile new results and progress in China and present the current debates and issues on the origins of modern humans. Finally, we offer several suggestions for future studies.

Abstract:The human remains recovered from "Grotte superieure de Zhoukoudian" are the best-preserved Late Pleistocene human fossils in East Asia. For decades, as the representative of the Late Pleistocene human in East Asia, the Upper Cave skulls have been playing important role in the research of origins of modern Mongoloids and American Indians. With the advance of the origin and evolution of modem humans, more attention has been paid to the details and the mechanisms for the late Pleistocene human evolution and the formation of modern human populations. Both the origin and diversification of modem humans have been stressed. Some studies further trigger the debaters on the Upper Cave Man concerning its evolutionary level and its role in the formation of modern human populations in East Asia. To further explore these problems, we examined and compared 12 non-metric features on the 3 Late Pleistocene Upper Cave skulls and 162 Holocene individuals earthed from two archaeological sites of North China (Longxian and Yanqing). Our results indicate that 8 on the 12 features have different expression patterns between Upper Cave Man and recent Chinese leading the authors to believe that more primitive expressions appeared on the Upper Cave Man than on recent Chinese Populations. Based on these findings, some problems on the intragroup variation in Late Pleistocene and Holocene populations are discussed. (c) 2006 Elsevier SAS. Tous droits reserves.

Abstract:East Asia is one of the few regions in the world where a relatively large number of human fossils have been unearthed — a discovery that has been taken as evidence for an independent local origin of modern humans outside of Africa. However, genetic studies conducted in the past ten years, especially using Y chromosomes, have provided unequivocal evidence for an African origin of East Asian populations. The genetic signatures present in diverse East Asian populations mark the footsteps of prehistoric migrations that occurred tens of thousands of years ago.

Abstract:Abstract The emergence of Homo sapiens in Eastern Asia is a topic of significant research interest. However, well-preserved human fossils in secure, dateable contexts in this region are extremely rare, and often the subject of intense debate owing to stratigraphic and geochronological problems. Tongtianyan cave, in Liujiang District of Liuzhou City, southern China is one of the most important fossils finds of H. sapiens , though its age has been debated, with chronometric dates ranging from the late Middle Pleistocene to the early Late Pleistocene. Here we provide new age estimates and revised provenience information for the Liujiang human fossils, which represent one of the most complete fossil skeletons of H. sapiens in China. U-series dating on the human fossils and radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating on the fossil-bearing sediments provided ages ranging from ~33,000 to 23,000 years ago (ka). The revised age estimates correspond with the dates of other human fossils in northern China, at Tianyuan Cave (~40.8–38.1 ka) and Zhoukoudian Upper Cave (39.0–36.3 ka), indicating the geographically widespread presence of H. sapiens across Eastern Asia in the Late Pleistocene, which is significant for better understanding human dispersals and adaptations in the region.

Abstract:Abstract Northern China harbored the world’s earliest complex societies based on millet farming, in two major centers in the Yellow (YR) and West Liao (WLR) River basins. Until now, their genetic histories have remained largely unknown. Here we present 55 ancient genomes dating to 7500-1700 BP from the YR, WLR, and Amur River (AR) regions. Contrary to the genetic stability in the AR, the YR and WLR genetic profiles substantially changed over time. The YR populations show a monotonic increase over time in their genetic affinity with present-day southern Chinese and Southeast Asians. In the WLR, intensification of farming in the Late Neolithic is correlated with increased YR affinity while the inclusion of a pastoral economy in the Bronze Age was correlated with increased AR affinity. Our results suggest a link between changes in subsistence strategy and human migration, and fuel the debate about archaeolinguistic signatures of past human migration.

Abstract:Southwest China was characterized by its ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity, but the genetic profile and dynamic history of past populations in this region are not well attested. Here, we present genome-wide ancient DNA data from seven Ming Dynasty (1368 CE–1644 CE) individuals from the heart of southwest China, Guizhou province. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first ancient genomic data from the region. We found that compared to other published historical genomes from southwest China, the Ming Dynasty Dasongshan individuals in Guizhou share more affinity with northern Chinese, and were genetically admixed by ancient populations from southern China and northern China agriculturalists from the Yellow River region. Analysis of short runs of homozygosity fragments suggests that the Dasongshan people constituted a small-sized population with probable exogamous customs. Furthermore, present-day Tibeto-Burman, Tai-Kadai, and Hmong-Mien groups in southwest China carry additional ancestry associated with ancient Yellow River agriculturists, indicating a genetic influx from northern China within recent centuries.

Abstract:Based on the OSL (Optically Stimulated Luminescence)dating data and the magnetic sus-ceptibilities of sedimentary samples from the Holocene loess profile,the paleotemperature and paleoprecipi-tation were reconstructed,and combining with the cultural characteristics from the Yangshao cultural peri-od to the Eastern Zhou Dynasty and the distribution ratio of these cultures'settlements on different landform types of the southern Shanxi Province,the relationship between Holocene environmental change and cul-tural evolution in southern Shanxi Province was discussed.The results revealed that the climate was warm and humid during the early-Yangshao and mid-Yangshao periods,with the paleosol originated from active pedogenic processes,which promoted the generation and development of culture.The climate changed from warm-humid to warm-dry during the late-Yangshao culture period,which effected the development of culture.The climate was cooler and drier than before during Longshan culture period, but it was still warmer and wetter than present,the drier climate might promote ancestors to live near the water catchment area,and the production technology gradually increased,which promoted the fast development of culture. The climate continued to be cool and dry during the Xia,Shang and Western Zhou Dynasties,and the de-velopment of culture was restricted.In the Eastern Zhou Dynasty the climate was still cool and dry,howev-er,with the evolution of human society,the restriction of environment to culture decreased gradually. Most of the archaeological settlements located on the landforms that were suitable for agricultural produc-tion,such as alluvial plain,loess tableland and piedmont sloping plain.With the climate turning to be cool and dry gradually after Longshan culture period,the scope of human activity showed a tendency from loess tableland and piedmont sloping plain to alluvial plain.

Abstract:One of the hottest scientific issues in paleoanthropology currently focuses on the origin of modern humans and much more attention is paid to the fossil hominin records of the early Late Pleistocene because it is a critical time for the radiations of modern humans.Recently,the fragmentary human remains (an anterior mandible and two molars) and abundant coexisting fossil mammals were unearthed from the Zhiren Cave (22°17′13.6″N,107°30′45.1″E) of Mulan Mountain,Chongzuo,Guangxi of Southern China.The human remains are securely dated by U-series on overlying flowstones and associated faunal analysis to the initial Late Pleistocene,ca.110ka.As such,they are the oldest modern human fossils in East Asia and predate by ＞60,000 years the oldest previously known modern human remains in the region.A large variety and amount of mammalian fossils were collected from the Zhiren Cave after two times of trial and systematic excavations.The Zhiren fauna is composed of 55 species (21 large mammals and 34 small mammals).In this study the proboscidean remains from this site are systematically described as Elephas kiangnanensis and first occurring Elephas maixmus based on the dental morphology,such as plate number,lamellar frequency and enamel thickness.Recent studies reveal that three turnovers occurred in the proboscidean radiations during Quaternary in Southern China.The genus,Sinomastodon was once prevalent during the Early Pleistocene,and became one of the typical members of the Gigantopithecus-Sinomastodon fauna.It became extinct at the end of the Early Pleistocene,and was replaced by Stegodon orientalis,a main member of the Ailuropoda-Stegodon fauna (s.s.) during the Middle Pleistocene.The appearance of Elaphas kiangnanensis until the late Middle Pleistocene changed the features of the Ailuropoda-Stegodon fauna,and Elaphas maximus gradually became dominant during the Late Pleistocene.Due to the absence of the typical Early or Middle Pleistocene members of Southern China,such as Sinomastodon and Stegodon,the Zhiren fauna bears the transitional characteristics of the typical Middle Pleistocene Ailuropoda-Stegodon fauna (s.s.) and Late Pleistocene Asian elephant fauna.The Zhiren fauna lacks the typical members of forest type of Southern China,such as Ailuropoda,Stegodon and Rhizomys,and probably indicates a biological event from Elephas kiangnanensis to Elephas maixmus,which is possibly related to origin of early modern human caused by climate transition.Both shrub-dwelling and grass-dwelling animal species are comparatively numerous from Zhiren fauna,indicating the forest was shrinking while the shrub and grassland were expanding at that time.This was probably the result of comparatively drier climate at that time.

Abstract:The human remains recovered from Upper Cave at Zhoukoudian are the richest and best preserved late Pleistocene human fossils ever found in east Asia. For decades, as the representative of the late Pleistocene human in east Asia, the Upper Cave skulls have played an important role in research on the origins of modern Mongoloids and American Indians. Recently, more attention has been paid to the details and mechanisms for late Pleistocene human evolution and the formation of modern human populations. Both the origin and diversification of modern humans have been stressed in research. Some studies further the debates on the evolutionary position of Upper Cave Man and this group's role in the formation of modern human populations in east Asia. To further explore these problems, we examined and compared 12 non-metric features on three Upper Cave skulls and modern Chinese unearthed from two archaeological sites in North China. Our results indicate that 8 features are expressed differently between Upper Cave Man and modern Chinese. We believe that more primitive characteristics define Upper Cave Man when compared to modern Chinese populations. These findings and some problems on late Pleistocene human evolution including intra-group variation and the standard for modern human populations, are discussed.
Spatial–temporal Distribution and Geographic Context of Neolithic Cultural Sites in the Hanjiang River Basin, Southern Shaanxi, China

Abstract:Understanding how to live successfully within our environment is among the most pressing challenges facing contemporary society. This paper probes the problem based on comparative analysis and discusses the relationship between the spatial-temporal distribution of the Neolithic cultural sites and the geographic context in the Hanjiang River Basin in the south of Shaanxi Province, China. Archaeological studies have identified 175 Neolithic cultural sites in the study area, with a sequence of Laoguantai (C-14 age 8-7 ka BP), Yangshao (C-14 age 7-5 ka BP) and the late period of the Neolithic Age (C-14 age 5-4 ka BP). The total number of archaeological sites, the distribution area and the density all showed an early ascending and later descending trend, but the proportion of the number of archaeological sites in the study area to the corresponding value of the entire Shaanxi Province declined sharply. Spatially, these sites were concentrated on the terraces of the Hanjiang River and its main tributaries with an altitude of 400-800 m. Multiple data were integrated to clarify the critical effects of tectonic and geomorphologic conditions on the distribution of the Neolithic sites. Further comparisons revealed the correlation of Holocene climate change and environmental evolution with the Neolithic cultural succession in the study area that ameliorated conditions to generally promote the development of the primitive culture while degeneration coincided with the culture's transition or interruption. The discussion on the origin of the primitive culture and the temporal-spatial distribution corresponding to the regional culture differentiation sheds light on the complex and dynamic human-nature interaction system during the Neolithic Age, thus emphasising the wider field-based investigation and high-resolution reconstruction works of the palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironment in the future.
