Abstract:Objective To determine the patients' response to changes in the social-life-quality after surgical treatment for idiopathic scoliosis. Methods Fifty-four patients undergoing surgical treatment for scoliosis were enrolled in this study.Thirty cases of them, with an average age of 16 years old and an average Cobb size of 65° were followed up with missing follow-up less than 2.Among the 30 cases,4 cases were male, and 26 were female. They were tested preoperatively and at 3-,6-and 12-months intervals postoperatively with Consulting American SRS-22 outcomes questionnaire, which was modified to SRS-20 outcomes questionnaire according to Chinese young people ability.Statistic analysis used was t-test with multiple comparisons among various post-operative periods. Results Social-life function was significantly decreased 3 months post operation(P0.0001),and returned to baseline by 6 months after surgery.Pain was significantly worse at 3 months post-operatively(P0.01).But pain at 6 and 12 months post-operatively was significantly less than pain at 3 months post-operatively(P0.01).Self image was significantly improved at 3 months post-operatively(P0.0001),and maintained the improvement through 12 months.Self-evaluation was low pre-operatively and at 3 months after surgery, with no significant improvement(P0.05).It was significantly improved at 6 and 12 months after surgery(P0.01).Self-satisfaction was high at 3,6 and 12 months after surgery, with no significant difference among these periods(P0.05).Conclusion The self-evaluation of social-life-quality changed during various periods after surgical treatment for scoliosis. It is important to adopt health education and mental health interventions during hospital care and short-term outpatient care.
