Abstract:Marine organisms represent promising bioactive peptide resources with diverse biological activities such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, anti-fatigue, and immunoregulatory activities. Despite many studies on marine bioactive peptides, there is a dearth of comprehensive review articles on the emerging trends that encompass the production techniques and the biological applications of marine bioactive peptides. In this review, we summarize the major research and findings related to marine bioactive peptides, encompassing aspects of their production, purification, biological activities, nanotechnology-based strategies, and their potential applications. Enzymatic hydrolysis currently stands out as the most commonly used method for producing marine bioactive peptides; the downstream purification process often includes a combination of multiple purification techniques. Due to their diverse biological properties, marine peptides have garnered considerable interest for industrial applications as active ingredients in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries. Additionally, the incorporation of encapsulation strategies such as nano emulsion, nanoliposome, and microemulsions holds promise for significantly enhancing the bioavailability and bioactivity of marine peptides. Future research should also prioritize the systematic identification and validation of the potential health benefits of marine peptides by both in vitro and in vivo animal models, along with the conduct of human clinical trials.

Abstract:Biologically active peptides (bioactive peptides) refer to the peptides beneficial to vital movement or physiological effects, including endogenous and exogenous active peptides. The absorption mechanisms of bioactive peptides were much better than free amino acid, which also had more significant physiological functions and food sense improvement effects than amino acid. Marine bioactive peptides have fundamental resources and extensive exploitation perspective, that had immunity enhancement, antioxidation, anti-hypertension, anti-tumor and antibiosis activities.

Abstract:Biological molecules in nutraceuticals and functional foods have proven physiological properties to treat human chronic diseases. These molecules contribute to applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries by preventing food spoilage and cellular injury. Technological advancement in the screening and characterization of bioactive peptides has enabled scientists to understand the associated molecules. Consistent collaboration among nutritionists, pharmacists, food scientists, and bioengineers to find new bioactive compounds with higher therapeutic potential against nutrition-related diseases highlights the potential of the bioactive peptides for food and pharmaceutic industries. Among the popular dietary supplements, marine animals have always been considered imperative due to their rich nutritional values and byproduct use in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The bioactive peptides isolated from marine animals are well-known for their higher bioactivities against human diseases. The physiological properties of fish-based hydrolyzed proteins and peptides have been claimed through in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trials. However, systematic study on the physiological and clinical significance of these bioactive peptides is scarce. In this review, we not only discuss the physiological and clinical significance of antioxidant and anticancer peptides derived from marine animals, but we also compare their biological activities through existing in vitro and in vivo studies.

Abstract:Marine organisms are an important source of antitumour active substances. Thus, pharmaceutical research in recent years has focused on exploring new antitumour drugs derived from marine organisms, and, many peptide drugs with strong antitumour activities have been successfully extracted. Based on different mechanisms, this paper reviews the research on several typical antitumour bioactive peptides in marine drugs and the latest progress therein. Additionally, the development prospects for these antitumour bioactive peptide-based drugs are discussed so as to provide a reference for future research in this field.

Abstract:Objective To review the research progress on chemical constituents from marine sponges genus Acanthella and their bioactivities.Methods Published papers about chemical constituents from genus Acanthella have been reviewed including their biological activities.Results A hundred and ten compounds were isolated from the marine sponge Acanthella sp.,primarily including diterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids.They are richly functionalized terpenes bearing isonitrile,isothiocyanate,formamide,and/or chlorine groups.This class of compounds exhibited a variety of biological activities,such as antimalarial,anthelmintic,antifouling,cytotoxicity,antimicrobial and antifungal activities.Conclusions This review provides an important reference for the research and development of marine sponges genus Acanthella.

Abstract:Marine organisms are rich sources of structurally diverse bioactive nitrogenous components. In recent years, numerous bioactive peptides have been identified in a range of marine protein resources, such as antioxidant peptides. Many studies have approved that marine antioxidant peptides have a positive effect on human health and the food industry. Antioxidant activity of peptides can be attributed to free radicals scavenging, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, and metal ion chelating. Moreover, it has also been verified that peptide structure and its amino acid sequence can mainly affect its antioxidant properties. The aim of this review is to summarize kinds of antioxidant peptides from various marine resources. Additionally, the relationship between structure and antioxidant activities of peptides is discussed in this paper. Finally, current technologies used in the preparation, purification, and evaluation of marine-derived antioxidant peptides are also reviewed.

They exert various biological roles, one of the most crucial of which is the antioxidant effect. Reverse relationship between antioxidant intake and diseases has been approved through plenty of studies. Antioxidant activity of marine peptides can be attributed to in vitro and in vivo free radical scavenging activities. Antioxidant peptides isolated from marine sources may be used as functional ingredients in food formulations to promote consumer health and improve the shelf life of food products. This chapter presents an overview of the antioxidant peptides derived marine resources with the potential utilization in the food as well as pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore marine bioactive peptides with anticancer potential sourced from various marine organisms, including tunicates, sea sponges, and mollusks. Peptides like Stylisin and Papuamides have been isolated, identified, and modified to enhance their activity, with many advancing to clinical trials due to their diverse biological activities, promising prospects in medicine. Enzymatic hydrolysis is a favored method for extracting peptides from marine proteins, particularly from sponges known for their rich bioactive compounds. Compounds such as Jaspamide and Homophymins exhibit potent cytotoxic activity against cancer cells, underscoring their therapeutic potential. Additionally, peptides from ascidians and mollusks, such as Aplidine and Kahalalide F, demonstrate significant anticancer properties. This study also explores peptides influencing apoptosis, microtubule dynamics, and angiogenesis, providing insights into potential mechanisms for cancer treatment. While peptides like Neovastat and mycothiazole target known pathways, others such as patellamides act through unknown mechanisms, highlighting the intricate interactions of marine peptides with cancer cells. Overall, marine-derived peptides show promise as valuable candidates for developing novel anticancer therapies.

Abstract:Depsipeptides, an important group of polypeptides containing residues of hydroxy acids and amino acids linked together by amide and ester bonds, have potential applications in agriculture and medicine. A growing body of evidence demonstrates that marine organisms are prolific sources of depsipeptides, such as marine cyanobacteria, sponges, mollusks, microorganisms and algae. However, these substances have not yet been comprehensively summarized. In order to enrich our knowledge about marine depsipeptides, their biological sources and structural features, as well as bioactivities, are highlighted in this review after an extensive literature search and data analysis.

Abstract:The marine environment is a relatively unexplored source of functional ingredients that can be used in food processing, storage, and fortification in a variety of ways. Marine microorganisms are a possible source of novel bioactive chemicals with potential human utility. Some of these microbes can live in the harsh marine environments, resulting in complex compounds with unique biological properties that can be used in several industrial and biotechnological applications. So far, several marine microorganisms (fungi, myxomycetes, bacteria, and microalgae) have been isolated that produce antioxidant, antibacterial, apoptotic, antitumoral, and antiviral chemicals. Furthermore, it emphasizes the enormous potential for marine microbes to produce very important bioactive chemicals. The main goal of this review is to provide a concise overview of several constituents of marine bioactives. Anticoagulant, anticancer, and hypocholesterolemic effects have been demonstrated for bioactive peptides extracted from fish protein hydrolysates, as well as algal fucans, galactans, and alginates. Furthermore, omega-3 fatty acids are abundant in fish oils and marine microorganisms, while potent antioxidants such as carotenoids and phenolic compounds can be found in crustaceans and seaweeds. This review focuses on the potential use of marine-derived chemicals as functional food ingredients for health maintenance and chronic disease prevention, based on their bioactive qualities.

Abstract:Marine sponges are currently one of the richest sources of anticancer active compounds found in the marine ecosystems. More than 5300 different known metabolites are from sponges and their associated microorganisms. To survive in the complicated marine environment, most of the sponge species have evolved chemical means to defend against predation. Such chemical adaptation produces many biologically active secondary metabolites including anticancer agents. This review highlights novel secondary metabolites in sponges which inhibited diverse cancer species in the recent 5 years. These natural products of marine sponges are categorized based on various chemical characteristics.

Antimicrobial peptides are small molecular weight peptides which protect the host organisms against multiple microbes. Due to the non-toxicity, broad-spectrum antimicrobial activities and the ability to escape drug-resistance mechanisms, antimicrobial peptides are valued as a potential treasure in pharmaceutical and food industries. Abstract:Angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) is a paramount therapeutic target to treat hypertension. ACE inhibitory peptides derived from food protein sources are regarded as safer alternatives to synthetic antihypertensive drugs for treating hypertension. Recently, marine organisms have started being pursued as sources of potential ACE inhibitory peptides. Marine organisms such as fish, shellfish, seaweed, microalgae, molluscs, crustaceans, and cephalopods are rich sources of bioactive compounds because of their high-value metabolites with specific activities and promising health benefits. This review aims to summarize the studies on peptides from different marine organisms and focus on the potential ability of these peptides to inhibit ACE activity.

Abstract:Owing to their unique physical and chemical properties and remarkable biological activities, marine biological resources are emerging as important sources of raw materials for producing health products, food, and cosmetics. Collagen accounts for approximately 70% of the sea cucumber body wall, and its hydrolysis produces small-molecule collagen polypeptides with diverse biological functions, such as anticancer, antihypertensive, immune-enhancing, memory-enhancing, and cartilage tissue repairing effects. Notably, the potential of sea cucumber polypeptides in combination with anticancer therapy has garnered considerable attention. Determining the composition and structure of sea cucumber polypeptides and exploring their structure–activity relationships will aid in obtaining an in-depth understanding of their diverse biological activities and provide scientific insights for the development and utilization of these polypeptides. Therefore, this review focuses on the amino acid structures and activities of sea cucumber polypeptides of varying molecular weights. This study also provides an overview of the biological activities of various sea cucumber polypeptides and aims to establish a scientific basis for their development.

Chemical and biological diversity of new natural products from marine sponges: a review (2009–2018)

Abstract:Marine sponges are productive sources of bioactive secondary metabolites with over 200 new compounds isolated each year, contributing 23% of approved marine drugs so far. This review describes statistical research, structural diversity, and pharmacological activity of sponge derived new natural products from 2009 to 2018. Approximately 2762 new metabolites have been reported from 180 genera of sponges this decade, of which the main structural types are alkaloids and terpenoids, accounting for 50% of the total. More than half of new molecules showed biological activities including cytotoxic, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, enzyme inhibition, and antimalarial activities. As summarized in this review, macrolides and peptides had higher proportions of new bioactive compounds in new compounds than other chemical classes. Every chemical class displayed cytotoxicity as the dominant activity. Alkaloids were the major contributors to antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activities while steroids were primarily responsible for pest resistance activity. Alkaloids, terpenoids, and steroids displayed the most diverse biological activities. The statistic research of new compounds by published year, chemical class, sponge taxonomy, and biological activity are presented. Structural novelty and significant bioactivities of some representative compounds are highlighted. Marine sponges are rich sources of novel bioactive compounds and serve as animal hosts for microorganisms, highlighting the undisputed potential of sponges in the marine drugs research and development.
