Abstract:Most of the research studies in the field of lignin valorization has been achieved on lignin from paper and pulp industries. The key merit of utilizing lignin from the facilities is that resources are already centralized, and the costs of transportation to further process are fundamentally less compared to possible sources. Biomass composed of lignin, hemicelluloses, and cellulose (also known as lignocellulosic biomass) is both plentiful and renewable. The three polymer groups may be isolated and chemically transformed to provide a wide variety of bio-generated value-added materials, chemical, and fuels. To maximize the value of the biomass feedstock as a whole, it is best to extract these products via a streamlined, integrated models of pathways concerned with catalytic reactions i.e., bio-refinery. In this article, upstream processing is analyzed in depth, including the phenylpropanoid route, bioengineered lignins, and lignin bioengineering. The last section addresses the difficulties inherent in lignin bioengineering from a technical and practical standpoint.

Abstract:Abstract Developing novel techniques to convert lignin into sustainable chemicals and functional materials is a critical route toward the high-value utilization of lignocellulosic biomass. Lignin-derived carbon materials hold great promise for applications in energy and chemical engineering, catalysis and environmental remediation. In this review, the state-of-art sciences and technologies for controllable synthesis of lignin-derived carbon materials are summarized, pore structure engineering, crystalline engineering, and morphology controlling methodologies are thoroughly outlined and critically discussed. Green chemical engineering with cost-effectiveness and precise carbonization tuning microstructure are future research trends of lignin-derived carbon materials. Future research directions that could be employed to advance lignin-derived carbon materials toward commercial applications are then proposed.

Abstract:Lignin valorization for fuels and value-added products is essential to enhance the profitability and sustainability of biorefineries. Due to the complex and heterogeneous structure of lignin, technical barriers hinder the implementation of economic lignin utilization. Here, we summarize the major challenges facing lignin valorization processes. Different pretreatment methods, especially emerging combinatorial pretreatment approaches for isolating and tailoring lignin are introduced. To overcome the heterogeneity of lignin structure and improve lignin processability, advances in fractionation approaches including organosolv extraction, membrane technology, and gradient precipitation are analyzed and presented. Furthermore, progress in lignin valorization by thermochemical and biological conversion coupling with pretreatment and fractionation are systematically reviewed. Finally, we discuss advanced strategies and perspectives for future research involving biomass pretreatment, lignin fractionation and conversion processes.

Abstract:Lignin, an energy-rich and adaptable polymer comprising phenylpropanoid monomers utilized by plants for structural reinforcement, water conveyance, and defense mechanisms, ranks as the planet's second most prevalent biopolymer, after cellulose. Despite its prevalence, lignin is frequently underused in the process of converting biomass into fuels and chemicals. Instead, it is commonly incinerated for industrial heat due to its intricate composition and resistance to decomposition, presenting obstacles for targeted valorization. In contrast to chemical catalysts, biological enzymes show promise not only in selectively converting lignin components but also in seamlessly integrating into cellular structures, offering biocatalysis as a potentially efficient pathway for lignin enhancement. This review comprehensively summarizes cutting-edge biostrategies, ligninolytic enzymes, metabolic pathways, and lignin-degrading strains or consortia involved in lignin degradation, while critically evaluating the underlying mechanisms. Metabolic and genetic engineering play crucial roles in redirecting lignin and its derivatives towards metabolic pathways like the tricarboxylic acid cycle, opening up novel avenues for its valorization. Recent advancements in lignin valorization are scrutinized, highlighting key challenges and promising solutions. Furthermore, the review underscores the importance of innovative approaches, such as leveraging digital systems and synthetic biology, to unlock the commercial potential of lignin-derived raw materials as sustainable feedstocks. Artificial intelligence-driven technologies offer promise in overcoming current challenges and driving widespread adoption of lignin valorization, presenting an alternative to sugar-based feedstocks for bio-based manufacturing in the future. The utilization of available lignin residue for synthesis of high-value chemicals or energy, even alternative food, addresses various crises looming in the food-energy-water nexus.

Abstract:Due to the urgent need for renewable and clean energy, the efficient use of lignin is of wide interest. A comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of lignin depolymerization and the generation of high-value products will contribute to the global control of the formation of efficient lignin utilization. This review explores the lignin value-adding process and discusses the link between lignin functional groups and value-added products. Mechanisms and characteristics of lignin depolymerization methods are presented, and challenges and prospects for future research are highlighted.

Abstract:Nowadays and in the future, environment and energy are important issues that people have to consider. In order to achieve energy sustainability and minimize the increase in environmental pressure, researchers have begun to gradually develop new ways of energy access. Biomass resource is a sustainable and efficient mode of energy supply, which has little impact on the environment. Among them, lignin is a rich organic compound in natural plants and is a promising biomass source. According to different forms of energy, different lignin catalytic cracking reactions can be used. This paper systematically summarizes the research progress of lignin catalytic cracking under different energy effects and focuses on the opportunities of lignin catalytic cracking at this stage. The challenges and future research directions of lignin catalytic cracking and directional conversion composite catalytic system are summarized and discussed. On this basis, a critical perspective based on experiment is proposed. It provides a richer catalytic model for the efficient conversion of lignin into fuel and high-value chemicals in the future. In conclusion, this Review offers insights into future directions for catalytic cracking of lignin through synergistic utilization of multiple energy sources.

Abstract:Lignin is the most abundant aromatic substrate on Earth and its valorization technologies are still under developed. Depolymerization and fragmentation are the predominant preparatory strategies for valorization of lignin to chemicals and fuels. However, due to the structural heterogeneity of lignin, depolymerization and fragmentation typically result in diverse product species, which require extensive separation and purification procedures to obtain target products. For lignin valorization, bacterial-based systems have attracted increasing attention because of their diverse metabolisms, which can be used to funnel multiple lignin-based compounds into specific target products. Here, recent advances in lignin valorization using bacteria are critically reviewed, including lignin-degrading bacteria that are able to degrade lignin and use lignin-associated aromatics, various associated metabolic pathways, and application of bacterial cultures for lignin valorization. This review will provide insight into the recent breakthroughs and future trends of lignin valorization based on bacterial systems.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass,which is rich in cellulose and hemicellulose,can be refined into fuels and other value-added-chemicals.It will enhance and extend the world energy and chemical base without adding additional carbon to the environment.The composition of lignocellulosic biomass feedstock was reviewed,and some typical pretreatment technologies including dilute acid,liquid hot water,steam explosion,carbon dioxide explosion,ammonia fiber explosion,alkaline,organosolv process and biological methods,were compared.Moreover,the production of cellulosic ethanol,n-butanol and biodiesel by fermentation of biomass hydrolyzate was especially discussed.It is necessary to develop efficient and environmental pretreatment technologies for the industrialization of fuel and chemicals production from lignocellulose biomass.In addition,reconstructing inhibitor tolerant strains and applying continuous fermentation or fed-batch fermentation process can reduce the manufacturing cost and enhance the fermentation efficiency.

Abstract:As an abundant aromatic biopolymer, lignin has the potential to produce various chemicals, biofuels of interest through biorefinery activities and is expected to benefit the future circular economy. However, lignin valorization is hindered by a series of constraints such as heterogeneous polymeric nature, intrinsic recalcitrance, strong smell, dark colour, challenges in lignocelluloses fractionation and the presence of high bond dissociation enthalpies in its functional groups etc. Nowadays, industrial lignin is mostly combusted for electricity production and the recycling of inorganic compounds involved in the pulping process. Given the research and development on lignin valorization in recent years, important applications such as lignin-based hydrogels, surfactants, three-dimensional printing materials, electrodes and production of fine chemicals have been systematically reviewed. Finally, this review highlights the main constraints affecting industrial lignin valorization, possible solutions and future perspectives, in the light of its abundance and its potential applications reported in the scientific literature.

Abstract:As one of the most abundant polymers in biosphere, lignin has attracted extensive attention as a kind of promising feedstock for biofuel and bio‐based products. However, the utilization of lignin presents various challenges in that its complex composition and structure and high resistance to degradation. Lignin conversion through biological platform harnesses the catalytic power of microorganisms to decompose complex lignin molecules and obtain value‐added products through biosynthesis. Given the heterogeneity of lignin, various microbial metabolic pathways are involved in lignin bioconversion processes, which has been characterized in extensive research work. With different types of lignin substrates (e.g., model compounds, technical lignin, and lignocellulosic biomass), several bacterial and fungal species have been proved to own lignin‐degrading abilities and accumulate microbial products (e.g., lipid and polyhydroxyalkanoates), while the lignin conversion efficiencies are still relatively low. Genetic and metabolic strategies have been developed to enhance lignin biodegradation by reprogramming microbial metabolism, and diverse products, such as vanillin and dicarboxylic acids were also produced from lignin. This article aims at presenting a comprehensive review on lignin bioconversion including lignin degradation mechanisms, metabolic pathways, and applications for the production of value‐added bioproducts. Advanced techniques on genetic and metabolic engineering are also covered in the recent development of biological platforms for lignin utilization. To conclude this article, the existing challenges for efficient lignin bioprocessing are analyzed and possible directions for future work are proposed.

Abstract:Lignin, an abundant renewable resource in nature, is a highly heterogeneous biopolymer consisting of phenylpropanoid units. It is essential for sustainable utilization of biomass to convert lignin to value-added products. However, there are technical obstacles for lignin valorization due to intrinsic heterogeneity. The emerging of synthetic biology technologies brings new opportunities for lignin breakdown and utilization. In this review, we discussed the applications of synthetic biology on lignin conversion, especially the production of value-added products, such as aromatic chemicals, ring-cleaved chemicals from lignin-derived aromatics and bio-active substances. Synthetic biology will offer new potential strategies for lignin valorization by optimizing lignin degradation enzymes, building novel artificial converting pathways, and improving the chassis of model microorganisms.

Abstract:The exploration of effective approaches for the valorization of lignin to valuable products attracts broad interests of a growing scientific community. By fully unlocking the potential of the world's most abundant resource of bio-aromatics, it could improve the profitability and carbon efficiency of the entire biorefinery process, thus accelerate the replacement of fossil resources with bioresources in our society. The successful realization of this goal depends on the development of technologies to overcome the following challenges, including: 1) efficient biomass pretreatment and lignin separation technologies that overcomes its diverse structure and complex chemistry challenges to obtain high purity lignin; 2) advanced chemical analysis for precise quantitative characterization of the lignin in chemical transformation processes; 3) novel approaches for conversion of biomass-derived lignin to valuable products. This review summarizes the latest cutting-edge innovations of lignin chemical valorization with the focus on the aforementioned three key aspects.

Abstract:As the only natural source of aromatic biopolymers, lignin can be converted into value-added chemicals and biofuels, showing great potential in realizing the development of green chemistry. At present, lignin is predominantly used for combustion to generate energy, and the real value of lignin is difficult to maximize. Accordingly, the depolymerization of lignin is of great significance for its high-value utilization. This review discusses the latest progress in the field of lignin depolymerization, including catalytic conversion systems using various thermochemical, chemocatalytic, photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and biological depolymerization methods, as well as the involved reaction mechanisms and obtained products of various protocols, focusing on green and efficient lignin depolymerization strategies. In addition, the challenges faced by lignin depolymerization are also expounded, putting forward possible directions of developing lignin depolymerization strategies in the future.

Abstract:Each year, agricultural residues such as stalks, husks, and pits/nutshells from food crop harvesting are available on a gigatonne scale worldwide. While biorefinery routes have been used convert agricultural residue carbo-hydrates into value-added products (e.g., bioethanol, biochemicals), the lignin, comprising 20-50% of the dry mass of agricultural residues, remains largely underutilized. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore the utilization of agricultural biorefinery lignins for value-added products. In this review, we briefly introduce the origins of agricultural lignins, discuss their structural differences, and compare them with the more commonly studied wood lignins. We highlight in greater detail the recent advances in using agricultural lignins as mac-romonomers/fillers for polymer syntheses that include epoxies and polyurethanes. The use of agricultural lignins as carbon-rich precursors for the preparation of carbon fibers, supercapacitor electrodes, and carbon foams are also discussed, as well as their use for other applications such as additives for fertilizer release control and UV-shielding. Altogether, this review provides key developments in the progress made to date for agricultural lignin utilization that may help promote future innovation in the field.

Abstract:Lignin has long been regarded as waste, readily separated and discarded from the pulp and paper industry. However, as the most abundant aromatic renewable biopolymer in nature, lignin can replace petroleum resources to prepare chemicals containing benzene rings. Therefore, the high-value transformation of lignin has attracted the interest of both academia and industry. Nitrogen-containing compounds and functionalized materials are a class of compounds that have wide applications in chemistry, materials science, energy storage, and other fields. Converting lignin into nitrogenous chemicals and materials is a high-value utilization pathway. Currently, there is a large amount of literature exploring the conversion of lignin. However, a comprehensive review of the transformation of lignin to nitrogenous compounds is lacking. The research progress of lignin conversion to nitrogenous chemicals and functional materials is reviewed in this article. This article provides an overview of the chemical structure and types of industrial lignin, methods of lignin modification, as well as nitrogen-containing chemicals and functional materials prepared from various types of lignin, including their applications in wastewater treatment, slow-release fertilizer, adhesive, coating, and biomedical fields. In addition, the challenges and limitations of nitrogenous lignin-based materials encountered during the development of applications are also discussed. It is believed that this review will act as a key reference and inspiration for researchers in the biomass and material field.

Abstract:Lignin, as the second largest renewable biomass resource in nature, has increasingly received significant interest for its potential to be transformed into valuable chemicals, potentially contributing to carbon neutrality. Among different approaches, renewable electricity-driven biomass conversion holds great promise to substitute a petroleum resource-driven one, owing to its characteristics of environmental friendliness, high energy efficiency, and tunable reactivity. The challenges lie on the polymeric structure and complex functional groups in lignin, requiring the development of efficient electrocatalysts for lignin valorization with enhanced activity and selectivity toward targeted chemicals. In this Review, we focus on the advancement of electrocatalytic valorization of lignin, from monomers, to dimers and to raw lignin, toward various value-added chemicals, with emphasis on catalyst design, reaction innovation, and mechanistic study. The general strategies for catalyst design are also summarized, offering insights into enhancing the activity and selectivity. Finally, challenges and perspectives for the electrocatalytic conversion of lignin are proposed.

Abstract:The grave concerns arisen as a result of environmental pollution and diminishing fossil fuel reserves in the 21st century have shifted the focus on the use of sustainable and environment friendly alternative resources. Lignocellulosic biomass constituted by cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin is an abundantly available natural bioresource. Lignin, a natural biopolymer has over the years gained much importance as a high value material with commercial importance. The present review provides an in-depth knowledge on the journey of lignin from being considered a roadblock to a bridge connecting diverse industries with widescale applications. The successful valorization of lignin for the production of bio-based platform chemicals and fuels has been the subject of intensive investigation. A deeper understanding of lignin characteristics and factors governing the biomass conversion into valuable products can support improved biomass consumption. The components of lignocellulosic biomass might be totally transformed into a variety of value-added products with the improvements in bioprocess techniques that valorize lignin. In this review, the recent advances in the lignin extraction and depolymerization methods that may help in achieving the cost-economics of the bioprocess are summarized and compared. The industrial potential of lignin-derived products such as aromatics, biopolymers, biofuels and agrochemicals are also outlined. Additionally, assessment of the recent research trends in lignin valorization into value-added chemicals has been done and present scenario of technological-industrial applications of lignin with economic perspectives is highlighted.

Abstract:The aromatic hetero-polymer lignin is industrially processed in the paper/pulp and lignocellulose biorefinery, acting as a major energy source. It has been proven to be a natural resource for useful bioproducts; however, its depolymerization and conversion into high-value-added chemicals is the major challenge due to the complicated structure and heterogeneity.
