Abstract:Optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing offset quadrature amplitude modulation (O-OFDM/OQAM) system relaxes the orthogonal condition of the sub-carriers from the complex domain to the real field. Inter-symbol-interference (ISI) and inter-carrier-interference (ICI) could be suppressed by using filter banks with promising time-frequency-localization (TFL) properties. Therefore, cyclic prefix (CP) inserted between consecutive OFDM blocks could be removed for O-OFDM/OQAM system to improve system spectral efficiency. When passing through fiber channel, O-OFDM/OQAM faces serious intrinsic imaginary interference (IMI) induced by chromatic dispersion (CD), and fiber nonlinear effect, which would deteriorate system performance evidently. Fiber nonlinear effect induced interference is a great impairment for long haul transmission O-OFDM/OQAM system, and can not be equalized directly by using nonlinear equalization method designed for traditional optical OFDM. There is still much room for improvement of nonlinear equalization method for O-OFDM/OQAM. In this paper, we systematically study Volterra expansion based nonlinear equalization method (VENE) for O-OFDM/OQAM. We theoretically deduce simplified Volterra series expansion nonlinear transmission matrix (SVEM) for O-OFDM/OQAM based on mathematic deduction. With SVEM, intra channel nonlinear effect induced distortions could be modeled and estimated. By using specially designed pilot blocks, we obtain approximate solution of SVEM and perform effective VENE with very limited complexities. As shown in multiple Montel Carlo simulation results, nonlinear robustness for O-OFDM/OQAM has been improved significantly thanks to VENE, with various transmission distances and system parameters.

Abstract:Optical fiber communication systems play an important role in broadband signal transmissions, where the nonlinear dynamics in the long-haul optical fiber transmissions greatly degrade the transmission performance and limit the fiber capacity and reach. This paper analyzes and compensates for the nonlinear dynamics in the long-haul optical fiber transmission with the delay-based optoelectronic reservoir computing (RC) scheme, which provides benefits like time-adaptive tracking, low-complexity and hardware implementation potentials. The generalization of the analysis and compensation schemes from the traditional amplitude-modulated PAM signal to the amplitude-phase-modulated QAM signal is achieved by signal preprocessing. In the numerical study, the proposed RC-based fiber dynamics compensation scheme, with fiber reach from 1400km to 3000km, shows considerable performance with the digital backpropagation scheme, which is always used as the benchmark for nonlinear compensation of long-haul fiber transmissions. The realization complexity is much reduced with the RC-based schemes, which has provided a new dawn for optics-based nonlinear analysis and compensations.

Abstract:Nonlinear impairment is one of the critical limits to enhancing the performance of high-speed communication systems. Traditional digital signal processing (DSP)-based nonlinear channel equalization schemes are influenced by limited bandwidth, high power consumption, and high processing latency. Optoelectronic reservoir computing (RC) is considered a promising optical signal processing (OSP) technique with merits such as large bandwidth, high power efficiency, and low training complexity. In this paper, optoelectronic RC was employed to solve the nonlinear channel equalization problem. A parallel optoelectronic RC scheme with a dual-polarization Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPol-MZM) is proposed and demonstrated numerically. The nonlinear channel equalization performance was greatly enhanced compared with the traditional optoelectronic RC and the Volterra-based nonlinear DSP schemes. In addition, the system efficiency was improved with a single DPol-MZM.

Abstract:Stochastic nonlinear impairment is the primary factor that limits the transmission performance of high-speed orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-division multiplexing (MDM) optical fiber communication systems. This Letter presents a low-complexity adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (LANFIS) nonlinear equalizer for OAM-MDM intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission with three OAM modes and 15 wavelength division multiplex (WDM) channels. The LANFIS equalizer could adjust the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the distorted pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) symbols to fit the statistical characteristics of the WDM-OAM-MDM transmission channel. Therefore, although the transmission symbols in the WDM-OAM-MDM system are subjected to a stochastic nonlinear impairment, the proposed LANFIS equalizer can effectively compensate the distorted signals. The proposed equalizer outperforms the Volterra equalizer with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 2, 1.5, and 1.3 dB for three OAM modes at a wavelength of 1550.12 nm, respectively. It also outperforms a CNN equalizer, with improvements in receiver sensitivity of 1, 0.5, and 0.3 dB, respectively. Moreover, complexity reductions of 67%, 74%, and 99.9% are achieved for the LANFIS equalizer compared with the Volterra, CNN, and ANFIS equalizers, respectively. The proposed equalizer has high performance and low complexity, making it a promising candidate for a high-speed WDM-OAM-MDM system.

Abstract:A novel nonlinear electrical equalizer (NLEE) based on Volterra theory is proposed for mitigating intra-channel nonlinearities in pseudo-linear coherent optical communication systems. According to the temporal matching condition of intra-channel nonlinear pulse interactions, we just select specific nonlinear terms and reduce the computation complexity considerably. Numerical simulations of 10GBaud coherent quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) transmission show that the simplified NLEE can efficiently mitigate intra-channel nonlinearities.
Nonlinear Compensation for High-Order Modulation Signal in a IM/DD DFT-S-OFDM System with Directly Modulated Laser

Abstract:The nonlinear compensation algorithm based on Volterra series has been proved effective in low order modulation OFDM system, such as QPSK/16QAM. In this paper, we demonstrate a 64QAM/128QAM DFT-S-OFDM signal generation with DML with some advanced algorithms such as DD-LMS, ISFA, DFT-S and nonlinear compensation to improve the signal performance. For the first time we demonstrate that the nonlinear compensation algorithm based on Volterra series can improve the performance of the high-order modulation DFT-S-OFDM signal such as 64QAM and 128QAM. In this experiment we have realized 19.1/11.2Gb/s 64/128QAM signal transmission over 15km fiber at 1307nm. For 64QAM case, the receiver sensitivity can be improved about 1dB when all the algorithms mentioned in this paper are adopted. And the BER can be improved from 4.7x10-3 to 2.8x10-3 at 7.0dBm for 128QAM signal, which reaches the HD-FEC threshold of 3.8x10-3.

Abstract:Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) show promising applications due to their unique advantages compared with conventional commercial LEDs. In OLED-base visible light communication (VLC), the nonlinearity may severely degrade the system performance, especially for modulation format with high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) such as orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). We experimentally analyze the OLED nonlinearity by Volterra series and apply the Volterra-based nonlinear equalizer to demodulate the signal. It is shown that the proposed system achieves transmission distance of 3 meters, which exceeds the longest reported in the organic VLC literature. It can mitigate both inter-symbol interference (ISI) and nonlinearity more effectively than other equalizers. Experimental results at different distance and driving voltage are also reported.

Abstract:Advanced digital signal processing (DSP) is viewed as an inevitable technology to deal with nonlinear distortions in cost-sensitive optical interconnection systems. Classic methods such as equalization based on Volterra series turn out to be quite effective solutions to compensate signal impairments. In practical imple-mentations, a great deal of efforts focus on reducing the com-putational complexity. Several model selection and dimensionality reduction approaches have been proposed to simplify the struc-ture, which employ backward strategies. However, the threshold settings for these pruning approaches are environment-sensitive. In this paper, we propose a least angle regression-based nonlinear equalization method (LaNLE). We extend the non-intrusive least angle regression technique to generalized linear models. Through an incremental process by stagewise feature selection and weight fitting, we obtain the low-complexity nonlinear structure with significant feature basis. Experimental verification is performed based on 120 Gbps PAM8-modulated 850 nm VCSEL plus MMF optical link. The results show that, compared to fully-connected Volterra nonlinear equalizer structure (VNLE), up to 60.4% and 70.1% reduction in complexity can be achieved with similar BER performance in back-to-back and 100 m transmission scenarios, respectively. In addition, we experimentally demonstrate 225 Gbps per lane PAM-8 signal transmission over 100 m MMF in a simple and cost-effective implementation manner based on mass-production 850 nm VCSEL and proposed LaNLE method.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a millimeter-wave (mm-wave) system at 75 GHz with discrete Fourier transform spread (DFT-S) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signal transmission. The baseband signal is modulated by a directly modulated laser at the transmitter, and the mm-wave signal is converted to a lower frequency one by an envelope detector at the receiver. The intrasymbol frequency-domain averaging (ISFA) is used for channel estimation and a Volterra nonlinear equalizer is adopted to mitigate the nonlinearity caused by signal-signal beat interference. In this system, a 2-Gbd 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) DFT-S OFDM signal is delivered over 4-m wireless link under the bit error ratio of 3.8 × 10-3. Our experimental results show that the ISFA and the Volterra nonlinear equalizer can improve the system performance by about 2-dB and 1-dB receiving sensitivity, respectively. This is the first time the Volterra nonlinear equalizer has been used in a W-band mm-wave system to improve wireless transmission performance.

Abstract:The mitigation of intra-channel nonlinearities in 10 Gbaud coherent NRZ-QPSK systems via a nonlinear electrical equaliser based on Volterra theory is experimentally demonstrated. Without the requirement of prior knowledge of the fibre link, the equaliser significantly improves the system performance compared to digital dispersion compensation only.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) DFT-spread optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission system utilizing a cost-effective directly modulated laser (DML) and direct detection. For 20-Gbaud 16QAM-OFDM signal, with the aid of nonlinear equalization (NLE) algorithm, we respectively provide 6.2-dB and 5.2-dB receiver sensitivity improvement under the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3 for the back-to-back (BTB) case and after transmission over 10-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) case, related to only adopt post-equalization scheme. To our knowledge, this is the first time to use dynamic nonlinear equalizer (NLE) based on the summation of the square of the difference between samples in one IM/DD OFDM system with DML to mitigate nonlinear distortion.

Abstract:We investigate the suppression of Kerr nonlinearities by optical phase conjugation (OPC) in a fiber transmission system without power symmetry by including all the manifestations of the Kerr nonlinearities. We found that OPC cannot completely compensate for all Kerr nonlinearities in absence of power symmetry, and some nonlinearities may become even worse if one of the nonlinearities is fully compensated. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the compensation system to eliminate the most dominating nonlinearity. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the interplay of various kinds of nonlinearities. The need of proper design for transmission systems to suppress the dominating nonlinear effect is shown when all manifestations of Kerr nonlinearity are not compensated simultaneously.

Abstract:We propose a joint nonlinear electrical equalization approach in coherent optical discrete-Fourier-transform spread orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (DFT-spread-OFDM) systems with polarization division multiplexing (PDM). This method is based on an adaptive Volterra series expansion for nonlinear distortions of two orthogonal polarizations. The nonlinear electrical equalization is validated through numerical simulation of 100-Gb/s quadrature phase shift keying and 200-Gb/s 16 quadrature amplitude modulation PDM DFT-spread-OFDM systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we present Wiener model (W-model); Hammerstein model (H-model), and parallel Hammerstein model (PH-model) based equalization schemes, which are the reduction of general Volterra series model, for the nonlinear distortions compensation in short reach optical transmission. The principle of each model is presented and the performance of these Volterra-class models based NLEs are investigated through pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and carriless amplitude and phase modulation (CAP) simulation system. A 28 Gb/s CAP16 experiment system over 15 km fiber link is also demonstrated using the proposed NLEs. Finally, a comparison of performance and complexity using different NLEs is conducted. Abstract:In this paper, a Volterra series nonlinear equalization (NLE) scheme is proposed to compensate the nonlinear distortions in vector mm-wave system over fiber link. The principle of NLE scheme is presented. The performance of NLE scheme is investigated through a 5Gbaud 16QAM over 40GHz RF carrier simulation system. The proposed NLE scheme is proved to be feasible in nonlinearity mitigation in vector mm-wave system.

Abstract:In this paper, theoretical investigation about the nonlinearity distortion caused by the chromatic dispersion and square law detection is presented. Then Volterra series based nonlinear equalizer (VNLE) is proposed for CAP modulation short reach optical transmission. The coefficients for high order Volterra kernels in the VNLE are investigated and the number of nonlinear memory length is optimized. More than 1 dB improvement at BER of 3.8 × 10 -3 for 28 Gb/s CAP16 signal after 15km is observed with the help of the proposed simplified VNLE that only considering about the 2nd intra-kernels.
