Abstract:This study combines the resource-based view (RBV) and institutional context to examine the relationship between opportunity-based entrepreneurship and the environmental quality of sustainable development, as well as the moderating role of institutional context (regulative, normative and cognitive factors), using Global Entrepreneurship Monitor database (GEM) and World Development Indicator (WDI) data. The results of this study show that opportunity-based entrepreneurship has a positive relationship with environmental quality of sustainable development. An analysis of moderating effects demonstrates that regulative, normative and cognitive factors have positive moderating effects on the relationship between opportunity-based entrepreneurship and the environmental quality of sustainable development. An important implication is the need to focus on sustainable development, especially environmental quality, and to promote opportunity-based entrepreneurship to solve environmental issues. This paper contributes to the literature on entrepreneurship and sustainable development by establishing a relationship model between entrepreneurship (especially opportunity-based entrepreneurship) and environmental quality. This research also opens the "black box" mechanism from a resource perspective. Abstract:In this article, we introduce the 5 papers that have been selected for the publication of the special feature titled Social Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Transitions. Their common theme is the catalytic role that social entrepreneurs, an identity shared by people regardless of their professions or positions, play in China’s transitions toward sustainability. The stories told connect the rise of a rural tourism industry to the village entrepreneurs, place rural cadres in the central position on the long path of development in one of China’s best-known rags-to-riches regions, and highlight the role of business managers in signaling public trust or managing complex nonfinancial disclosures. The qualitative and quantitative studies reported shed light on how these socially embedded entrepreneurs broke the equilibria underlying the prolonged sustainability challenges, from extreme poverty to unhealthy growth to weak institutions, and laid pathways toward new ones that promised sustainability. By way of this special feature, we highlight a welcoming new trend in social entrepreneurship research that expand the scope of potential impact from directly affected stakeholders to cover the ripple effects of social entrepreneurial activities. We also echo the call for multilens, multisector, multiscalar and interdisciplinary research and for the adoption of the interpretive, critical, and pragmatic approaches that complement the popular positivist approach, which we believe will improve the relevance and impact of business and management research. We welcome more papers that establish solid links between social entrepreneurship and sustainability transitions.

Abstract:This research examines the linkage between entrepreneurial orientation and sustainable innovation. Research shows that the effects of entrepreneurial orientation on the exploitation and exploration of sustainable innovation are significantly positive, whereby absorptive capacity acts in a significant mediating role. The interaction between entrepreneurial orientation and absorptive capacity helps organizations overcome organizational inertia and strengthen the sustainability of innovation. By introducing the absorptive capacity theory and the view of organizational inertia, we have conducted empirical research on 392 Chinese environmentally friendly companies that have passed China’s national high-tech enterprise certification. We verified the relevant hypotheses in our framework in a structural model analysis using Mplus. To further look at the interaction terms of potential and realized absorptive capacity, we used PROCESS in SPSS to evaluate the conditional effects of absorptive capacity on coefficient paths between entrepreneurial orientation and the two types of innovation. The results show that entrepreneurial orientation improves the absorptive capacity of organizations, thereby promoting their sustainable innovation. Furthermore, based on the theory of sustainable innovation, we proved the positive impact of realized and potential absorptive capacity on the exploitation and exploration of sustainable innovation. Organizations could balance exploitation and exploration to implement sustainable innovation by adjusting their potential and realized absorptive capacities. Our results can help environmentally friendly organizations adjust the combination of entrepreneurial orientation and absorptive capacity to overcome organizational inertia, manage exploitation and exploration, and implement sustainable innovation.

Abstract:Entrepreneurship, energy consumption, financial inclusion, and environmental sustainability are intricately connected and mutually reinforcing domains. This study assumes that by promoting entrepreneurial activities in the renewable energy domain and enhancing financial accessibility, we can expedite the transition to a more ecologically sustainable and inclusive paradigm. Utilizing data spanning from 1985 to 2022, this research examines the interrelationships between entrepreneurship, financial accessibility, and environmental sustainability within the Chinese context. Notably, the analysis underscores negative correlations between entrepreneurship, energy consumption, and financial inclusion with environmental sustainability. Conversely, a positive correlation is observed between trade liberalization and environmental sustainability, signifying optimistic prospects for China's economic landscape. The study infers that entrepreneurial ventures are instrumental for China's economic advancement. Collectively, this investigation emphasizes the importance of formulating incentives to foster the emergence of environmentally sustainable enterprises, encourage technological advancements, and promote the development of smart urban environments to mitigate China's ecological impact.

Abstract:Social entrepreneurship is an important driving force for sustainable development. One existing problem with the current literature is that it is not fully clear under what conditions social entrepreneurship can promote sustainable economic, social, and environmental developments. The research evidence is even less in developing and emerging economies like China. Once an impoverished area, Yiwu has gone through a unique evolution path and developed into one of China’s top 10 wealthiest counties and a model city for sustainable development. In this study, based on a multilevel perspective and through analyzing objective statistical records and public archive data in Yiwu, we trace social entrepreneurship and sustainable development in Yiwu in recent decades. We make numerous theoretical contributions to social entrepreneurship and sustainable development literature. We identify the key factors and explore the roles of social entrepreneurship in promoting sustainable development in Yiwu. We discuss theoretical implications for social entrepreneurship specifically and entrepreneurship in general and make future research recommendations for our framework. Overall, we broaden and deepen the research on social entrepreneurship and sustainable development in an emerging economy.

Abstract:Social innovation is recognized as a crucial catalyst for the transition to sustainable energy. This paper explores how entrepreneurial initiatives contribute to this transformative process within the Chinese context. With a sample of 276 Chinese prefecture-level cities from 2004 to 2019, this paper provides detailed empirical evidence on the entire landscape of localized entrepreneurial endeavors that shape the evolution of the energy sector toward sustainability. Employing panel estimator models, results show three main findings: a significant positive relationship between social entrepreneurship and sustainable energy adoption. Regional disparities in the effectiveness of these entrepreneurial solutions. Local governance structures have a considerable impact on the viability of social innovation in energy. A policy implication is to enhance policy support for social entrepreneurs; different strategies are needed for different local contexts to maximize social innovation's potential impact on the energy transition.

Abstract:While China has experienced an unprecedented growth over the past decades, sustainability has become a major concern for policymakers and management practitioners. Consideration has been given to the convergence of mass entrepreneurship and innovation as a new economic driver and sustainability as a long-term economic objective. The focus of China’s economic development has moved from a resource-based expansion to a more entrepreneurial and socially responsible one. This is a timely and critical topic that captures the increasing concerns over sustainability and Chinese firms’ increased responsibility under the new governmental initiatives in fulfilling their social mandates from stakeholders at different levels. It is also a rich area for academic research but still under studied in the Chinese context. More indigenous management research on corporate social responsibility is required to adopt Chinese perspectives in conceptualizing CSR-related problems and further formulating more contextualized CSR theories, the emergence of a new research horizon.

Abstract:Making the university and its teachers and students alike as sustainable entrepreneurs are central endeavours in this age of sustainable development today. This paper presents an in-depth case study to examine the development of sustainable entrepreneurship of Tsinghua University of China at institutional and curricular levels. The paper first proposes an analytical model of the sustainable university as the alignment of six elements based on three interrelated propositions. The paper then applies the model to study Tsinghua's culture of sustainability and entrepreneurship and its strategies from green university to sustainable university. Next the paper discusses five cases courses in sustainability education from diverse disciplines with shared goal to foster sustainability competence as global competence and shared pedagogies for experiential learning. The paper concludes with theoretical discussions of institutional-level sustainable entrepreneurship and also practical discussions of shared characteristics and challenges of curricular-level sustainable entrepreneurship with special references of pedagogical and digital opportunities and challenges. The paper presents findings from a self-reflective practitioner-as-researcher action research jointly conducted by the instructors of case courses. The paper used a mixed-method approach with participatory observation, interview, focus-group, survey, and curricular development experiments.

Entrepreneurial Orientation and Green Management in an Emerging Economy

Abstract:This study examines entrepreneurial orientation as a potential driver of firms’ green management in an emerging market context. Combining entrepreneurship literature and the institutional theory, we investigate the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and green management, and the moderating effects of social legitimacy and ownership type. Using survey data from 239 firms in China, it was found that entrepreneurial orientation is positively associated with emerging market firms’ green management. In addition, this positive relationship is strengthened by social legitimacy and stronger for state-owned enterprises than for non-state-owned enterprises. Furthermore, our empirical results partly support that the configuration of high entrepreneurial orientation, high social legitimacy and being state-owned is more effective to facilitate emerging market firms’ green management than other configurations. This study suggests entrepreneurial orientation as a promising antecedent of green management in the context of emerging markets, going beyond the well-documented isomorphic framework and the resource/capability base. Also, the two-way interaction and three-way configuration effects we propose not only extends the bridging of entrepreneurship and institutional theory to the domain of green management research, but also depict a more complete picture to deeply understand why emerging market firms being green.

Abstract:The external environment faced by underdeveloped regions is becoming increasingly complex, and the importance of entrepreneurial activities is gradually becoming prominent. To stimulate entrepreneurial vitality in underdeveloped regions, entrepreneurial opportunities are of paramount importance. In the current research on opportunity co-creation and entrepreneurial action, there is often an oversight regarding the liability of newness and the unique characteristics of underdeveloped regions, which has resulted in a lack of specificity in interpreting the underlying mechanisms at play. In this study, based on the perspective of opportunity co-creation, a survey of 330 entrepreneurs is conducted in four underdeveloped regions in China, namely, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Chongqing, in an attempt to clarify the mechanism of opportunity co-creation in entrepreneurial action. The results show that opportunity co-creation not only has a direct positive impact on entrepreneurial action but also exerts an indirect positive effect through the mediating effect of opportunity belief. Additionally, regulatory focus plays a positive moderating role. Our study reveals that entrepreneurs in underdeveloped regions should be strict with their investors and partners to improve their belief in the chances of entrepreneurial success so as to efficiently co-create opportunities. Meanwhile, governments in underdeveloped regions should pay attention to creating a favorable entrepreneurial environment, actively building facilities that are conducive to entrepreneurial activities, and creating more entrepreneurial and employment opportunities to help entrepreneurial activities be carried out smoothly.

Abstract:The intensity and severe impact of carbon emissions on the environment has been witnessed globally. This study aims to unravel how environmental factors, personal factors, and entrepreneur outcome expectations affect entrepreneur low-carbon emission behavior (LCB) through the lens of social cognitive theory (SCT). To achieve the aims of this study, we gathered data from 1015 entrepreneurs and small, medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Jiangsu province of China to analyze the predictors of entrepreneur low-carbon behavior. The proposed relationships were tested using the partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) technique. The findings from the study indicate that environmental factors (i.e., climate change (CC), public media (PM), and corporate social responsibility (CSR) have a significant and positive relationship with entrepreneur LCB. Moreover, entrepreneur green production self-efficacy (GPS) is positively associated with entrepreneur LCB. The findings further revealed that entrepreneur personal concepts such as entrepreneur self-monitoring (SM), entrepreneur self-esteem (SE), and entrepreneur self-Preference (SP) significantly and completely affect entrepreneur GPS. Likewise, entrepreneur moral reflectiveness (EMR) substantially moderates the relationship between entrepreneur green production outcome expectation and LCB. This study concludes with recommendations for researchers interested in enhancing knowledge in this field. In summation, this study shows that a behavioral science viewpoint is critical for improving knowledge of low-carbon environment, CC drivers, mitigation strategies, and sustainable transition to our complex environment.

Abstract:Although research on entrepreneurial behaviour has drawn a great deal of attention, contextualised studies of entrepreneurial behaviour, such as those conducted in emerging economies, are limited and leave many issues unsolved. In this paper, we analyse the characteristics and influencing factors of entrepreneurial behaviour for new state-owned firms in the new energy automobile industry in the context of China's emerging economy. Using an exploratory case study and the qualitative research software SQL Nvivo 10.0, we show that new state-owned firms in the new energy automobile industry in an emerging economy demonstrate opportunity-resource integrated entrepreneurial behaviour. We propose that entrepreneurial firms can recognise institutional opportunities based on the resources acquired from their initial resource endowments and social networks and then bundle their resources to exploit opportunities and eventually shape the institutional environment. Moreover, we reveal that institutional environment, initial resource endowment and social network are the three major influencing factors of the entrepreneurial behaviour of new state-owned firms in the new energy automobile industry, which has significant theoretical and practical implications for the cultivation and development of emerging industries in emerging economies.

Abstract:There is an increasing interest in how sustainable entrepreneurship can balance people development, profit generation and planet protection to create better social, economic and environmental outcomes. Firms need to develop sustainable business processes, stakeholder engagement and sustainable innovations to achieve venture success. This comparative case study method uses primary research, literature review and the evaluation of secondary sources to bring more depth to the cases. Primary data are collected through detailed interaction with the Indian founders and the key stakeholders to study the phenomenon of sustainable entrepreneurship. One company designs and produces premium handmade leather footwear using traditional techniques, while the other firm designs and creates fabrics for global fashion houses using artisanal methods. The sustainability practices are contributing to social upliftment and positively impacting the environment as both the ventures were set up with a desire to support India’s artisanal networks. The social, economic and environmental outcomes create the theoretical framework of sustainable entrepreneurship. The sustainable innovation processes implemented by these companies filter out the detrimental effects of innovation to create socially responsible and environmentally friendly products. While sustainability-driven costs are higher for both companies, they are creating value-added products to build long-term profitability and growth. Some sustainability challenges like reduction in carbon footprint through greater efficiency in power consumption and transportation remain to be tackled. This applied research on sustainable best practices adds to the area of entrepreneurship. The cases may guide other entrepreneurs on how they could build and grow sustainable ventures. Policy implications for promoting sustainable entrepreneurship, the governmental role in supporting local artisan networks and the need for greater environmental awareness are discussed.

Abstract:Introduction: With the rapid development of China in recent decades, entrepreneurial scenarios are constantly changing, greatly promoting entrepreneurial practice. The characteristics of China's entrepreneurial scene, such as institutional differences, economic differences and cultural differences, make it unique. This research is based on a Chinese new energy vehicle start-up. Focus on how to achieve entrepreneurial enterprise performance in this unique entrepreneurial scenario. Methods: Based on the development process from 2014 to 2021, using entrepreneurial scenario and entrepreneurial performance theory, focusing on the two themes of "what to do" and "how to do", and adopting exploratory case study methods, the performance of entrepreneurial enterprises was studied. Results: The study found that in the context of Chinese entrepreneurship, cultural background has the most significant impact on the performance of entrepreneurial enterprises. The accurate prediction of institutional scenarios by entrepreneurial enterprises can improve enterprise performance, while economic scenarios have a negative impact on entrepreneurial enterprise performance. Discussion: The research shows that in the development process of entrepreneurial enterprises based on China's entrepreneurial scenario, the governance mode and strategic choice of entrepreneurial enterprises should match the scenarios at different stages. At different stages of development, entrepreneurial enterprises should flexibly adapt to entrepreneurial scenarios and adopt different strategies to reflect their advantages in entrepreneurial scenarios and improve the success rate of entrepreneurship.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to increase understanding of the real situation of Enterprise's Sustainable Innovation (ESI) in China. Design/methodology/approach First, the paper analyzes the practice of Chinese ESI in the past 30 years, and then reviews research results of the topic in China, by the authors and by other Chinese scholars. Finally, it provides the future prospects for ESI in China. Findings The practice of Chinese ESI started in 1978 when this country began reform, and two stages of Chinese ESI practice has been summarized. Otherwise, six major characteristics have been highlighted. China is one of the earliest countries that began to research on ESI and has achieved significant results since 1995. The paper summarizes major research findings of ESI in China, which can be divided into two categories. Especially, it stresses that one of the distinguishing achievements is research on mechanisms of ESI in China. Research limitations/implications The research on ESI in China is initially implemented based on Chinese practice. So, future research may explore whether the research results could be suitable for abroad, or not. Originality/value This original paper analyzes ESI practice and research findings in China, and may have value in helping people to understand ESI's real situation.

Abstract:Pursuing sustainable development through green entrepreneurship has been advocated, conceptualized, and empirically examined in the recent environmental management and entrepreneurship literature. However, green entrepreneurs are embedded in institutional environments that may discourage them from embracing sustainable development because of the "paradox of embedded agency." How can a firm overcome the liability of such an agency issue and escape what has become known as a "green prison"? This study proposes that, because international venturing exposes firms to foreign institutions, it provides them with opportunities for institutional learning. Thus, we examine how international venturing influences green entrepreneurship which, in turn, impacts firm performance. Specifically, based on institutional theory, this study develops a firm-level green entrepreneurship framework with three dimensions: green initiatives (a firm's active adoption of green practices), received government green support (benefits that a firm gains from the government by adapting to governmental incentives, programs, and policies related to green practices), and green political influence (a firm's attempts to influence legislation that enacts laws, rules, and regulations related to green practices). The results obtained by analyzing 152 firms that engage in international venturing activities and 151 firms that do not show that international venturing is positively associated with green initiatives and government green support while these two factors further directly enhance firm performance and mediate the effects of international venturing on performance.

Abstract:In recent years, sustainable entrepreneurship, urban entrepreneurship, and sustainable cities have separately gained lots of attention from scholars in different fields. In this article, we emphasize the importance of studying the interaction of entrepreneurship and sustainability in the context of cities. We discuss three promising areas along this line of research: sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems, entrepreneurial smart cities, and entrepreneurial solutions to sustainable urban growth. We then summarize the papers included in this special issue. These papers make important contributions to the transdisciplinary research at the intersection of entrepreneurship, sustainability, and urban development. In this article, we emphasize the importance of studying the interaction of entrepreneurship and sustainability in the context of cities. We discuss three promising areas along this line of research: sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems, entrepreneurial smart cities, and entrepreneurial solutions to sustainable urban growth. More specifically, sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems focus on actors and factors to facilitate the creation and growth of sustainable or green ventures in communities. Entrepreneurial smart cities are cities that grow their digital capability in infrastructure and other public services through corporate and startup entrepreneurship. And entrepreneurial solutions to sustainable urban growth highlight the transformative roles of entrepreneurs in sustainability-oriented urban development in both developing and developed countries.

Abstract:This article examines trends in social media marketing strategies within the framework of Chinese enterprises, highlighting the interplay between emerging digital marketing and sustainable development in a dynamic economic environment. By examining current emerging social media marketing trends in China and incorporating case studies, this article demonstrates how Chinese companies are effectively incorporating sustainable practices into social media marketing, highlights the potential offered by China's beneficial economy and environment, and explores in depth Potential and issues in China's specific consumer and regulatory environment. The findings indicate that sustainable social media marketing strategies are increasingly important for Chinese companies. This research provides a reference for how to incorporate sustainable development into the new trend of digital marketing of Chinese enterprises.
